In the past, if we wanted to copy text from a photo on an iPhone, we had to manually retype the text. Thankfully, things have changed. Whether you want to copy the text from a screenshot, business card, billboard, or picture on the Internet, you can easily do that on your iPhone in a few taps. Let’s check out five ways to extract and copy text from an image on your iPhone.

1. Copy Text From an Existing Image or Screenshot on iPhone

You can use the Live Text feature, the Google app, or the Google Photos app to copy text from a picture on your iPhone simply by selecting it with one tap.

Using Live Text in the Apple Photos App

Some iPhone models support a native feature allowing users to extract and copy text from an image using the Live Text feature. It can be used to copy text from photos and screenshots on your iPhone, as well as text from a physical document or card through the Camera app. You can also use it in the Safari web browser.

Once Live Text detects copyable text, you can draw context from it or surface actionable interface items using the “Look Up” feature. For instance, if your picture has a phone number or an email address, Look Up will allow you to make a call or send an email directly from the photo. Similarly, you can also activate GPS directions or define words in an image.

Note: Live Text requires an iPhone XS, iPhone XR, or later running iOS 15 or later. Live Text is also available on certain iPad models and Macs running macOS Monterey or macOS Ventura.

Follow these steps to enable Live Text on your iPhone or iPad:

Open the Settings app on your iPhone.

Scroll down and enable the toggle next to “Live Text.”

This is a one-time thing that you must do to use Live Text. After enabling it, follow these steps to copy text from a picture on your iPhone.

Launch the built-in Photos app on your iPhone and open the picture with text you want to copy.

Tap on the “Live Text” icon in the bottom-right corner. The text in the picture will be highlighted. Tap on “Copy All” to copy all of the text.

Alternatively, touch and hold on a word from the text that you want to copy. Move the selection points to manually adjust the selection, then tap on “Copy” from the pop-up bar.

Open any app where you want to paste the text, long-press on the text field, then select the “Paste” option from the pop-up bar.

If your iPhone does not support the Live Text feature, Google will come to your rescue. You can use the Google Lens feature that’s baked inside the Google app to copy text from any existing picture or screenshot, new photos from the Camera Roll, or pictures on the Internet.

Follow these steps to copy text from a screenshot or any other image on your iPhone using the Google app:

Install and open the Google app on your iPhone, then tap on the “Camera” icon in the search bar.

Tap on the “Gallery” icon at the bottom to view the photos on your iPhone.

Tap on the picture with text you want to grab.

Tap on the “Text” tab at the bottom.

Tap the text that you want to copy and mark the selection using the selection bars.

Tap on the “Copy text” button at the bottom to extract and copy the text from the picture.

Pro tip: add the Google search bar widget on your iPhone’s home screen for faster access to Google Lens.

You can also use the Google Photos app to copy text from existing pictures and screenshots on your iPhone.

Install and open the Google Photos app on your iPhone.

Open the picture with text you want to extract.

Tap on the “Google Lens” icon at the bottom and select the “Text” tab.

Tap on the text in the picture to select it. Drag the selection bars to mark the text, then tap the “Copy text” button.

If you want to extract and copy text from a physical document, card, bill, etc., you can use the following methods:

You can use the Live Text feature in the default Camera app on your iPhone to copy text from physical objects. This method also works when using the camera inside other Apple apps, such as Notes or Reminders.

Open the Camera app on your iPhone.

Point the camera toward the object with text that you want to copy.

Tap once on the text from the viewfinder, then tap on the “Live Text” icon.

The selected portion will move to the forefront. Tap on the first word of the text that you want to copy and move the selection points to select the desired text. Press the “Copy” option in the pop-up bar.

Alternatively, use the “Select All” option to select all of the text, then press “Copy” to copy the selected text.

If Live Text isn’t supported on your iPhone, use the Google app to copy text from pictures.

Install and open the Google app on your iPhone.

Tap on the “Camera” icon in the Google search bar to open the Google Lens feature.

Point the camera toward an item, such as a billboard, receipt, document, etc., that has text that you want to copy.

Select “Text” from the available options at the bottom, then press the capture button.

The text in the picture will be highlighted. Tap on the text that you want to copy, then press the “Copy text” button at the bottom.

If you find an interesting quote or other text on an image on the Internet, you can use the Live Text feature in the Safari browser to copy the text.

Open the webpage containing the picture with the text you’d like to copy while using the Safari browser on your iPhone.

Long-press on the text in the picture to select it, then drag the selection bars to customize your text selection. Finally, tap “Copy” to select the highlighted text.

If the above step does not work, long-press anywhere on the image except on the text. When the menu shows up, select “Show Text” from the menu.

The text in the picture will be highlighted. Use the “Select All” button to copy the selected text or long-press the text to manually select it from the picture. Follow this by tapping on the “Copy” button.

If you prefer using the Google Chrome browser over Safari, or if the Live Text feature does not work in Safari, you can extract and copy text from any image on the Internet using the Chrome browser app.

Go to the photo with text you want to copy in the Chrome browser.

Long-press on the image and select “Search image with Google.”

The Google Lens website will open. Tap on the “Text” tab to highlight the text in the picture.

Long-press on the text and drag the selection bars to mark the text that you want to copy. Tap on “Copy text” at the bottom of the screen to copy the text from that picture.

If you enjoy using Google Search and happen to find an interesting picture with text you want to copy, Google offers a native way to do so.

Start by using Google Search in any browser (Chrome, Safari, etc.) to find the image.

Tap on the image, then tap on the “Google Lens” icon at the bottom of the image.

The text will be highlighted in the picture. If that does not happen, tap or long-press on the text and mark the selection points. Tap on “Copy text” below the photo.

3 Ways To Remove The Background From An Image On Mac

Do you have a photo where you’d like to keep the main focus, the subject, but remove the rest? You don’t need a third-party photo editor to do this on macOS. Instead, we’ll show you built-in ways to remove the background from an image on Mac.

You can remove the background in your photo using the Photos app, a Finder Quick Action, or the Preview app. Each method has limitations, so check them out and see which will work best for you.

Introduced with macOS Ventura, you can remove the background of an image and then paste the remaining portion where you like. For instance, you can pop it into an email or text message.

You’ll then see your image pasted without its background.

The nice thing about this method is that you can remove an image background without effort and keep the original photo intact. However, you do have to paste the image somewhere, which may not always be ideal.

Another update with macOS Ventura was the addition of a Quick Action in Finder to remove a photo background.

If you don’t see this option, choose

Customize

at the bottom of the Quick Actions list.

Then, check the box for

Remove Background

and select

Done

. You’ll then see the action in the Quick Actions list.

Once you select the

Remove Background

Quick Action, you’ll see a new image created in the same folder with only the subject and no background.

This method gives you another fast way to remove an image background. The only downside is that it’s not always exact. For example, you may miss part of the subject in the final product, such as a dog’s tail or a girl’s ponytail.

If you want to be more precise when you remove image backgrounds, you can use the Preview app. Here are two different ways to do this in Preview.

This first method allows you to trace the portion you want to keep and remove the rest using the Smart Lasso tool.

Draw around the part of the picture you want to keep. You’ll see a broad red line as you do so, letting you capture all of those small things you don’t want to leave out.

To complete the border, connect your ending line to the beginning line.

If you’re using a JPG image, you’ll be asked to convert it to a PNG file format to complete the process. Select

Convert

to continue.

You’ll then have your image without a background.

If you have a photo where the subject has distinct colors from the background, you can use the Instant Alpha tool in Preview.

Open your image in Preview and choose

button (magic wand) in the toolbar.

Drag your cursor over part of the background area. Preview selects that section and any adjacent areas with the same colors.

When you release the cursor, these then display with a highlighted or glowing border.

Use your

key to remove the selected area.

Like the above method, you’ll be asked to convert the image to a PNG if you’re using a JPG file format.

Continue this process until all of the image’s background is removed.

When you need to get rid of a photo bomber, blurred background, or unwanted distraction behind the main focus, you can easily remove the background from an image on Mac with these options.

5 Ways To Move An Image Or Layer Between Photoshop Documents

This tutorial shows you how to move an image or a layer from one Photoshop document to another. You’ll learn how to copy and paste an image between documents, how to duplicate a layer, and three ways to drag and drop images between documents.

When it comes to blending and compositing images, Adobe Photoshop is the undisputed champ. In fact, Photoshop gives us so many interesting and powerful ways to combine images that our creativity is limited only by our skills and imagination. But before we can start combining images, we first need to know how to get multiple images into the same document. If you’re new to Photoshop, blending even two photos together can seem like an impossible task. That’s because Photoshop opens each image in its own separate document. To blend or composite the images, they need to be in the same document.

In a previous tutorial, we learned all about tabbed and floating document windows in Photoshop. We also learned how to view and arrange multiple open images on the screen using Photoshop’s multi-document layouts. In this tutorial, we’ll take what we’ve learned and explore five different ways to easily move images between documents.

We’ll start with your basic copy and paste method. Then, we’ll learn how to duplicate a layer from one document into another. Finally, we’ll look at three ways to drag and drop an image between documents. We’ll learn how to drag and drop images between tabbed documents, between documents in a multi-document layout, and between two floating document windows. Once you’ve seen how they all work, you can pick the method you like the best! I’ll be using Photoshop CC but this tutorial is fully compatible with Photoshop CS6.

Selecting and opening two images into Photoshop from Adobe Bridge..

By default, Photoshop opens the images as tabbed documents, with only one document visible at a time. Here’s my first image (portrait photo from Adobe Stock):

And now we see my second image. I’ll use this image as a texture to blend in with the original image. We’ll learn how to quickly blend images together at the end of this tutorial (texture photo from Adobe Stock):

The first method we’ll learn for moving images between documents is how to copy and paste an image from one document into another. To copy and paste an image, first select the document that holds the image you want to move. With the document active, select the image inside the document by going up to the Select menu in the Menu Bar and choosing All. To copy the image, go up to the Edit menu and choose Copy. Switch to the document where you want to paste the image. Then, go up to the Edit menu and choose Paste. The pasted image will appear on its own separate layer above the original image in the Layers panel.

To select the image itself, I’ll go up to the Select menu in the Menu Bar along the top of the screen. Then, I’ll choose All. This places a selection outline around my image, letting me know that the image is selected:

With the image selected, I’ll copy it to the clipboard by going up to the Edit menu in the Menu Bar and choosing Copy:

Before I paste the image into the document, let’s first look in my Layers panel. The Layers panel is where we can see all the layers in our document. We’ll learn all about layers in other tutorials. For now, notice that the image is sitting on the Background layer. The Background layer is currently the only layer in the document:

To paste my texture image, I’ll go up to the Edit menu in the Menu Bar. Then, I’ll choose Paste:

Photoshop pastes the texture image into the document. It looks like my texture photo is now the only photo in the document. That’s because the texture photo is sitting in front of the portrait photo. Since both photos are the same size, the texture image is blocking the portrait image from view:

To confirm that the document does in fact hold both images, let’s look again in the Layers panel. This time, we see that we now have not one but two layers. The original portrait image is still sitting on the Background layer. And, Photoshop placed the texture image on a brand new layer, named “Layer 1”, above it. Sure enough, both images are now in the same document:

So that’s the first way of moving images between documents. If you want to follow along with the next methods, you’ll first need to reset your two documents back to their original states. First, we’ll reset the document where you pasted the image. Make sure the document is still active. Then, go up to the Edit menu in the Menu Bar and choose Undo Paste. This removes the pasted image from the document, leaving you with just the original image:

Then, switch over to the document that holds the image you copied. To remove the selection outline from around the image, go up to the Select menu and choose Deselect. And with that, you’re ready to move on to the next method:

If we look in the Layers panel, we see my texture image sitting on the Background layer. This is the layer we’re going to duplicate:

To duplicate the layer, I’ll go up to the Layer menu in the Menu Bar. Then, I’ll choose Duplicate Layer:

This opens Photoshop’s Duplicate Layer dialog box. At the top of the dialog box, it shows the name of the layer you’ll be duplicating. In my case, it’s the Background layer. By default, Photoshop simply adds the word “copy” to the end of the layer’s original name. This will become the name of the layer (“Background copy”) when it’s moved into the other document. But you can give the duplicate layer a more descriptive name. Since this layer holds my texture image, I’ll change the layer’s name to “Texture”.

And if we look in the Layers panel, we see my “Texture” layer, which holds my texture image, now sitting above the portrait photo on the Background layer. Both images are now in the same document:

Again if you’re following along with each method, you’ll need to reset your documents before you continue. This time, the only document we need to reset is the one we moved the image into (in my case, the “portrait.jpg” document). To remove the duplicate layer from the document, go up to the Edit menu in the Menu Bar and choose Undo Duplicate Layer:

To drag and drop the image, we’ll need Photoshop’s Move Tool. I’ll select the Move Tool from the Toolbar along the left of the screen:

Keep your mouse button held down and your mouse cursor directly over the tab until you see Photoshop switch documents. In my case, I’ll wait for it to switch from my texture image to my portrait image. Then, I’ll drag the texture image from the tab down into the portrait document’s window:

To drop the image into the document, I’ll press and hold my Shift key. Then, I’ll release my mouse button. The Shift key tells Photoshop to center the image within the document. If you don’t need to center the image, release your mouse button without holding Shift. If you look in your Layers panel, you’ll see that both images are now in the same document:

Let’s reset the document so we can move on to the fourth method. To remove the image that you dragged into the document, go up to the Edit menu and choose Undo Drag Layer:

We’ve seen how to drag and drop between two tabbed documents. Now let’s learn how to drag and drop an image between documents using one of Photoshop’s multi-document layouts. We learned all about multi-document layouts in the previous tutorial.

I’ll start by going up to the Window menu in the Menu Bar and choosing Arrange. From there, I’ll select the 2-up Vertical layout:

This places both of my documents side by side each other, allowing me to see both images at once:

Both images are now visible on the screen.

Next, I’ll select the Move Tool from the Toolbar:

To drop and center the texture image, I’ll press and hold Shift, then I’ll release my mouse button. Photoshop copies the texture image from its original document into the portrait document:

To switch your view from the “2-up Vertical” layout back to the default, tabbed document view, go up to the Window menu, choose Arrange, then choose Consolidate All to Tabs:

And now we’re back to the default view, with both images in the same document:

Once again, to reset the document back to its original state so we can look at the final way of moving images between documents, go up to the Edit menu and choose Undo Drag Layer:

To switch my view from tabbed documents to floating windows, I’ll go up to the Window menu and choose Arrange. Then, I’ll choose Float All in Windows:

Next, I’ll select the Move Tool from the Toolbar:

To drop and center the image inside the portrait document, I’ll press and hold my Shift key, then I’ll release my mouse button:

The texture photo now appears in both windows.

With both images now in the same document, I’ll switch from floating windows back to tabbed documents by going up to the Window menu, choosing Arrange, and then choosing Consolidate All to Tabs:

Both images are now in the same tabbed document:

Back to the tabbed document view once again.

Now that we know how to move images into the same Photoshop document, how do we blend them together? At the moment, my texture image is completely blocking my portrait photo from view. To blend the two images, we can use one of Photoshop’s layer blend modes. I’ll go through this quickly here, but you can learn more about blending images in our How To Blend Textures With Photos tutorial.

If we look in my Layers panel, we see my texture image (on “Layer 1”) sitting above my portrait image (on the Background layer). The reason the texture is blocking the portrait from view is because the texture layer’s blend mode is currently set to Normal. The Blend Mode option is found in the upper left of the Layers panel:

And here we see that just by changing the blend mode from Normal to Soft Light, my texture now blends in nicely with the portrait, creating an interesting effect. Place An Image In Text With Photoshop

In this tutorial, we’ll learn how to place an image in text with Photoshop, a very popular effect to create and one that also happens to be very easy to do thanks to the power of Photoshop’s clipping masks, as we’re about to see!

This version of the tutorial is for Photoshop CS5 and earlier. If you’re using Photoshop CC or CS6, see the fully revised and updated version of this tutorial. Here’s the effect we’re going for:

Let’s get started!

First, we need the image that we’re going to place inside of our text. I’ll use this panoramic photo of Hawaii:

If we look in the Layers palette, we can see that we currently have one layer, named Background. This layer contains our image. We need to duplicate this layer, and the easiest way to do that is by using the keyboard shortcut Ctrl+J (Win) / Command+J (Mac). If we look once again in the Layers palette, we see that we now have two layers. The original Background layer is on the bottom, and a copy of the Background layer, which Photoshop automatically named “Layer 1”, is sitting above it:

We now have a new blank layer named “Layer 2” sitting directly between the Background layer and “Layer 1”:

Select White for the Contents option at the top of the Fill command’s dialog box.

Nothing will appear to have happened in the document window, since the image on “Layer 1” is blocking “Layer 2” from view, but if we look at the layer preview thumbnail for “Layer 2” in the Layers palette, we can see that sure enough, the layer is now filled with solid white:

To add the text, we’ll need Photoshop’s Type Tool, so select the Type Tool from the Tools palette. You can also quickly select the Type Tool by pressing the letter T on your keyboard:

With the Type Tool selected, go up to the Options Bar at the top of the screen and choose whichever font you want to use for the effect. Generally, fonts with thick letters work best. I’m going to choose Arial Black. Don’t worry about the font size for now:

This step isn’t absolutely necessary, but to help me see my text, I’m going to use white for my text color. The color you choose for your text doesn’t really matter since we’ll be filling the text with an image in a moment, but it still helps to be able to see the text when we’re adding it. To set the text color to white, all we need to do is set Photoshop’s Foreground color to white. First, press the letter D on your keyboard, which will reset the Foreground and Background colors to their defaults. Black is the default color for the Foreground color and white is the default color for the Background color. To swap them so white becomes the Foreground color, press the letter X on your keyboard. If you look at the Foreground and Background color swatches near the bottom of the Tools palette, you’ll see that white is now the Foreground color (the left swatch):

Use Photoshop’s Free Transform command to resize and move the text.

Press Enter (Win) / Return (Mac) when you’re done to accept the transformation and exit out of the Free Transform command.

Drag the type layer below “Layer 1”.

Release your mouse button when the black line appears to drop the type layer into place between “Layer 1” and “Layer 2”:

The type layer now appears between “Layer 1” and “Layer 2”.

The text will temporarily disappear inside the document window now that the image on “Layer 1” is blocking it from view.

To create the illusion that the photo is inside the text, we need to use a clipping mask. This will “clip” the photo on “Layer 1” to the text on the layer directly below it. Any areas of the photo that appear directly above the letters will remain visible in the document. The rest of the photo will disappear from view.

With “Layer 1” selected in the Layers palette, go up to the Layer menu at the top of the screen and choose Create Clipping Mask:

If we look in the document window, we can see that the photo now appears to be inside the text:

Select Drop Shadow from the list of layer styles that appears:

Select the Drop Shadow layer style.

This brings up Photoshop’s Layer Style dialog box set to the Drop Shadow options in the middle column. I’m going to leave most of the options alone, but I’ll lower the Opacity of the drop shadow down to about 60% so it’s not quite so intense, and I’ll set the Angle of the drop shadow to 120°:
