Each layout will differ slightly from the other, with the primary difference being the Enter Key, Left Shift Key, Right Alt Key, and a few more keys. Several keys in each layout are different in size, shape, and position.

ANSI and ISO are the most widely used keyboard layouts; where ANSI is available worldwide, while ISO is specific to only a few locations.

International Business Machines (IBM) introduced the ANSI arrangement, which finally became the common layout in the US. Microsoft adjusted a few changes in 1995, adding new keys such as Alternate (Alt) and Control (Ctrl), plus the Windows key, while the other keys stayed unchanged.

If you come across an ANSI layout keyboard that was made before 1995, it contains 101 keys. After the changes, this layout is now composed of 104 keys which include function, punctuation, and alphanumeric.

The task keys are positioned on the top line of the keyboard and are used to execute certain functions. The alphamerical keys, found in the middle row of the keyboard, are for typing numbers and letters, while the punctuation keys, which are situated in the base row, are for typing punctuation marks.

The keyboard is simple to learn and is commonly utilized in the United States. Furthermore, an ANSI layout possesses a standard shape and size, that is simple to locate and utilize the keys. The keyboard layout is also long-lasting and can handle heavy usage.

For full-size keyboards, the ISO layout physically includes 105 keys. It is found on the QWERTY layout yet includes some extra keys to make typing in worldwide languages easier. Many computer manufacturers use the ISO keyboard layout since it is the automated layout on most computers and laptops.

Several keys on the layout are missing from a traditional standard layout. These include keys for typing in other languages along and accented character keys. ISO layout also has keys for switching the keyboard layout, accessing the software keyboard, and viewing the character map.

The ISO layout has several pros and cons, just like many keyboard layouts.

The Alt Graph allows typers to access specific characters by using diacritics, which are symbols that are placed above or below letters to indicate different pronunciations. The grave accent (è) is one example.

The backslash key is located next to Enter key on the left in the layout, which can be useful for most users when typing. This Backslash key placement is beneficial to programmers and developers since the key is frequently used when typing program source code.

The use of the Backslash key in typing daily is minimal, if not non-existent. However, from the perspective of a programmer, the key will be extremely useful because of coding purposes.

The drawbacks of an ISO keyboard layout include the following:

The ISO keypad has an L-shaped Enter key that is adjacent to the back slant key, making it far away located to the center row of the keyboard. This distance is challenging for the user since Enter key is commonly used when typing.

The keyboard is typically more expensive than the ANSI keyboard for several reasons. ISO keyboards are in short supply due to their low demand, making the prices increase. Also, they are not widely accessible in the market.

On the ANSI keyboard layout, a full-sized keyboard has 104 keys, while a compact keyboard is made up of 87 keys. ISO has one extra key making it 105 keys on full-sized keyboards and 88 on compact keyboards.

That extra button on fully programmable ISO keyboards initiates what a user instructs. It simply allows you to insert another key. It could be another language, a symbol, or something else.

The shift key on the left is one of the most effective and important keys on the keypad as it plays an important part in the keyboard, making it efficient and user-friendly when typing.

Both Shift keys on the left and right side,  in ANSI Layout, are wide and parallelly located, implying that they are identical. On the other hand, for the ISO keypad layout, the Shift keys are slightly different in size and location, with the Shift key on the left side nearly half the size of the Shift key on the right.

At first glance, the difference in the enter key is evident since this is a well-known feature that differentiates both keypad layouts.

The  Enter key in the ANSI keypad layout has a rectangular shape and is wider in size, approximately the same size as the CapsLock button, which is situated to the left, while in the ISO keypad, the Enter Key is L-shaped therefore, it takes up less horizontal space and more vertical space than in the ANSI keyboard layout.

The placement of the Enter key in both ANSI and ISO keypad layouts is the same. But, if the user mostly uses the Enter key while typing, then the ANSI keyboard layout is better since it is easier to access.

In the ANSI keyboard layout, the alternate keys on both sides are exactly the same in size, and they take up the same space on the keypad. In the ISO keypad layout, the Alt key on the right is substituted with an Alt Gr key; the Alt Gr key is used to perform extra functions with the keys.

In both keyboard layouts, the backslash key is situated differently.

For the ANSI keypad layout, the backslash key is located just above the Enter key, and when it comes to size, the key is identical to the right Ctrl key. Whereas, In the ISO keypad layout, the key is positioned to the left just next to the Enter key.

Despite the fact that the location of the Backslash key has a minor impact since it is used less when typing, it can be considered when deciding between ANSI and ISO keyboard layouts.

Although the two layouts have differences in many aspects, utilizing an ISO keyboard layout has proven to be more difficult than using an ANSI layout keyboard. However, some languages, typically in European countries, cannot be used without the ISO keyboard layout.

ANSI keyboards are considered more comfortable for gaming due to the larger size of the enter and shift keys, However, some gamers may prefer the ISO layout because it has a shorter shift key and a separate alt graph key. Finally, the user must decide which layout is best for their gaming needs; the keyboard difference will not make a significant difference in the end.

The JIS layout is the Japanese Standard layout for their keys. This layout uses an upside-down L-shaped Enter key, divides the backspace key into two keys, divides the right shift key into two keys, and includes three additional keys within the spacebar space. In total, the JIS layout has 5 more keys than the ANSI keyboard layout, for a total of 109 keys. These additional keys are required for Japanese characters.

It is easier to transition from ISO to ANSI than the other way around. In ANSI, for example, the shift key on the left is longer. However, if you are an ISO layout user and press I in the same location, you will still hit the shift. The opposite is much more difficult (adapting to a shorter shift).

Gmail and Inbox both group similar emails into categories, but they do it differently. Gmail will automatically place each incoming email into one of five categories: Primary, Social, Promotions, Updates, and Forums. The most important emails go into the Primary category, emails related to Facebook, Twitter, and other networking sites go into the Social category, and so on.

It’s a pretty straightforward process, but it has a number of drawbacks. You can’t create your own categories, which means you’re stuck with the ones Google’s set up. You also can’t schedule when Gmail should show you less important emails you don’t want to check every day, like those marked as Promotions.

Inbox offers more email bundling options. It places each email in one of these eight categories:

Promos: deals, offers, and other marketing messages.

Social: emails from social networks and other social media services.

Updates: notifications from online accounts, such as alerts and confirmations.

Finance: money-related messages including bills and bank statements.

Purchases: receipts, delivery updates, and other info from retailers.

Trips: travel-related emails like flight confirmations and hotel bookings.

Forums: emails from mailing lists and discussion groups.

Low Priority: emails you’ve labeled as less important.

You can also configure when the new emails you receive for each category show up in your inbox. You can choose between daily, once a day, or once a week. If you don’t want to check the Promos section every day because it’s a waste of time, you can tell Inbox to show it to you just once a week, so you can focus more on the emails that require your immediate attention.

Gmail vs. Inbox: Email management

Google’s experimental email client is designed around the inbox zero philosophy. When you’re done with an email — either by responding to it or just reading it — you can hit the “Done” button to move it out of your inbox. Alternatively, you can select the Snooze option to deal with it later on. This results in an inbox with only the emails you haven’t dealt with. Gmail vs. Inbox: Integrations

There are a few design differences between the Gmail and Inbox Android apps. Gmail sports a red bar on top with a list of all the emails you’ve received below it. Each one shows the name of the sender, the subject along with a short excerpt, and the date on the right side. The app also features a menu that pops out from the side and shows additional options including the email sent, drafts, and so on.

Inbox has a blue bar on top and also lists the emails below it, but it does so a bit differently. The emails are categorized by timeframe (today, yesterday, June, and so on), making it easier to find the one you’re looking for. Also, the Inbox app shows the attachments under each email, so you can open them without opening the email first. This feature is present in the web version of Gmail, but not in the Gmail Android app.

Pixel 3 Xl Camera Review: Simply The Best

Ever since Google scrapped the Nexus series to make way for the premium Pixel lineup that could challenge iPhones, it has taken cameras and smartphone photography very seriously. So much so that the Pixel series has become synonymous with great cameras – it’s in the name after all.

In terms of hardware, Pixel 3 and Pixel 3 XL use the same 12.2MP camera on the back as last year but Google has shown a significant improvement when it comes to image processing as well as the computational photography powering the Pixel phones. On the front, there is now a dual camera setup comprising an 8MP primary sensor with autofocus and another 8MP sensor but for wide-angle selfies. We’ll talk about these cameras in separate sections.

Pixel 3 XL Camera Performance

Here’s my take on the camera performance of the Pixel 3 XL in different scenarios, starting with daylight.


Under strong or usable amount of natural lighting, the Pixel 3 XL ensures that most of the detail in the frame remain intact. The Pixel 3 is great at capturing accurate pictures; all areas of the images are not only well lit, but the color reproduction also falls in line with what you are seeing.

You can confidently pull the Pixel 3 XL out of your pocket and jump straight to the camera for taking great and highly detailed shots, with the best dynamic range, without having to find the best settings.

Indoors & Nightlight

While most smartphones start gasping for air when you want a picture in low light, Pixel 3 XL relishes the challenge. Surprisingly, I found the Pixel 3 XL to illuminate the images with more light than what my eyes could see on the viewfinder.

Some night images have a lot of noise in the images, but in most cases, the low-light photos turned out really well.

Portrait Shots

Ever since Apple first introduced the feature with the iPhone 7, artificial background blurring or portrait effect (also known as bokeh) has become an important fad for smartphone makers. Smartphone cameras are evaluated and ranked on their abilities to capture the accurate bokehs and the Pixel 3 XL simply excels in this area.

The Pixel 3 and 3 XL have a very reliable portrait mode, with a high degree of accuracy when it comes to detecting edges. This is impressive especially because Pixel 3 XL sticks to a single camera on the back unlike the host of smartphones that have blindly jumped the dual camera bandwagon aping Apple.

Selfies in Daylight

Moving to the front camera, Pixel 3 XL’s dual camera setup is not always in use and is dedicated to wide-angle selfies. So essentially, this can be treated as a single camera too with the nearly similar capabilities as the one on the back. Autofocus on the front is a welcome addition which helps ensure that the faces are in focus.

Selfies in Low/Indoor Light

At night, there is a visible drop in the amount of detail, and there’s some noise in these images, but the results are still much better than many other smartphones.

The Pixel 3 XL offers a uniform portrait experience even when you’re using the front camera. In most lighting conditions, the smartphone captures crisp portrait selfies. These shots are almost perfect when it comes to daylight shots but the performance at night is compelling too.

Portrait selfies at night may lack the same finesse as we see during the day but the edges are easily detected and there is minimal bleeding, but the overall quality depends on the contrast between the foreground and the background.

Super Res Zoom

The Pixel 3 XL has 8X digital zoom and uses OIS as well as data from your shakes to give you as crisp an image as possible despite the magnification. Google’s AI picks up your shakes and uses the data from these to give you the final image. The result is 8X zoom that’s not entirely unusable as would be the case

This technology captures sufficient detail even in shots taken at 8X. While I cannot say the same for low light, the fact that it at least captures some details at all at 8X during the night is not short of impressive.


The feature is a step further from the AR Stickers in the Pixel 2, as some of the new stickers including Iron Man imitate your facial expressions and hand gestures. The only limitation is that despite top-of-the-line hardware, the Pixel 3 XL starts lagging when there are more than two persons in the frame.


Top Shot & Motion Auto Focus

With Motion Auto Focus, the camera keeps a tagged subject in focus as you move the viewfinder around, which is very handy for kids or pets.

Night Sight

At the launch event, Google talked about another feature which will be coming to the Pixel 3 and the Pixel 3 XL later this year. Called “Night Sight”, the feature will help you capture detailed shots in low light without using any external light or flash. We will know for sure how this works when the update rolls out.


However, if you’re okay with shooting at 30fps, you might be delighted to learn about the Fused Video Stabilization feature on the Pixel 3 XL which uses a blend of OIS and EIS to keep the video stable on the rear camera.

P20 Pro, on the other hand, goes for the overkill by artificially enhancing the saturation to create a more “contrast-ey” photo. Overall, I think the Pixel 3 XL has the truest colors and the most natural tone of them all.


In situations, when there’s a mix of natural and artificial lighting, the Pixel 3 does an excellent job of retaining detail while the iPhone XS again unnecessarily overexposes the shot light, which robs the image of that high dynamic range look.

The Galaxy Note 9 and the P20 Pro don’t make a dent in the Pixel 3 either; while the former has washed out colors, P20 Pro tries to get that cool HDR look but fails hard in the darker areas of the scene. Again, the Pixel 3 XL clearly takes the win.


At night, the Galaxy Note 9 takes the lead when it comes to how much light it captures and this can be attributed to the bigger aperture in the main camera, which automatically adjusts in low light. Likewise, the iPhone XS also manages to capture enough light in this scene.

Portrait Shots

I need not talk too much about this because we have a clear winner here. The Pixel 3 XL is simply much better than its rivals at capturing detail, contrast and the colors. It does not go haywire with saturation and manages excellent edge detection.

The Galaxy Note 9 and the P20 Pro oversmoothen the skin and that is simply not appealing to me. Lastly, the iPhone XS is unable to reproduced the natural tones that Pixel 3 does so well. It’s a little too aggressive on the saturation, and again overexposes the scene by adding more warmth.


In the case of portrait selfies, too, the Pixel 3 XL is much better than the peers. The iPhone XS holds its own here, but the color reproduction is disappointing throughout the scene. In contrast, Note 9 goes for a cooler tinge, while the P20 Pro is still making me feel weak in my knees (not in a good way).

Google Pixel 3: Slaying The Competition

The Pixel 3 XL is clearly the leader in the smartphone photography game, and even outperforms the ultra-expensive iPhone XS Max. As evident from the shots above, the other two devices in the competition are well behind the Pixel 3.

Notably, the Pixel 3 has no ‘Pro mode’ but I can confidently say that’s not needed at all for this phone. This is not to say that the other devices are bad at taking pictures, but the Pixel 3 XL is clearly better and by a lot.

Our Verdict

The Yoga Slim 9i from Lenovo has a design that stands out from the crowd and impressive performance across a variety of tasks. However, the battery life is a bit of a let down.

Unlike most of Lenovo’s Yoga laptops, Slim 9i (Gen 7) isn’t a 2-in-1 device. However, it is a premium computer with a striking design that performs as good as it looks.  

With a dazzling display, capable Intel processor and some impressive speakers, this laptop is just as good for work as it is for play – especially if you work in the creative industries. But is it worth the hefty price tag? 

Design & build 

Oatmeal finish

The best thing about this 14in laptop is its premium look and feel, which is up there with some of the best in the business.  

What Lenovo dubs as an ‘Oatmeal’ colour is an unusual yet extremely aesthetically pleasing finish. The outer shell is made from glossy white glass with a very simple Lenovo logo on the side, whilst the keyboard and chassis all come in a shiny champagne shade. Amongst a sea of basic black and silver laptops, the Yoga Slim 9i makes a true statement, although there are no alternative colour options.

The laptop is 14.9mm thick, so it can slip inside a backpack or duffle bag and still give you plenty of room. At 1.37kg it isn’t the lightest on the market, but still doesn’t feel hefty when carrying around. Despite not being a convertible, the 9i has a wide 180-degree radius and lives up to its Yoga name by feeling both flexible and strong.  

There are three USB-C ports (all of which support Thunderbolt 4 for fast data transfer), plus a 3.5mm headphone jack and physical privacy shutter for the webcam. There’s also a side-mounted power button, but no HDMI or USB-A ports.

Lenovo does supply an adaptor in the box, but it only includes one HDMI port, one USB-A port and an old-school VGA port – so if you have two devices that connect via USB-A, you’ll need to fork out for an extra adaptor.

The integrated fan does a good job at keeping the device cool during daily tasks such as web browsing, and is for the most part whisper quiet. That said, under more strenuous activity like gaming, it does get noticeably louder.  

The box also includes a fabric wallet that matches the shade of the laptop, allowing you to protect it whilst taking it on the go. However, it’s not quite large enough to fit both the laptop and the charger comfortably.

Keys on the Lenovo Yoga Slim 9i have a curved, wide shape with responsive fireback. The key travel is on the shallow side, which may be a bug bear if you type aggressively. However, they are quite quiet. The keyboard can either have the backlight set to always on, automatic or off, with two levels of brightness available.

Many shortcut keys are included on this device, with the spacebar doubling up as a backlight key, and the F keys also acting as controls for the altering the sound and brightness, extending the displays, turning on airplane mode and more. There are quite a lot of shortcuts to get used to, but overall, I found them to be practical additions.

The trackpad takes up a good amount of space. I had a couple of occasions where it stuttered when booting the laptop up, but these were far and few between. 

The webcam is located above the display in the centre, within a bezel which protrudes from the top slightly. It is 1080p in quality and is combined with an infra-red sensor for Windows Hello face unlock, plus dual microphones to help improve video calls. There is also a privacy shutter button on the keyboard for your piece of mind.  

I found face recognition to work quite well. It can have have trouble recognising you if you’re wearing glasses, so I’d recommend improving recognition with a second scan via Settings. However, No fingerprint reader is included.

The Yoga Slim 9i has a 2.8K (2880×1800) OLED display with a 16:10 aspect ratio. This results in a clear and bright screen where colours pop and shine – even with the brightness turned down.  

Viewing angles are great on this device, though it can suffer from some glare if you’re using it near a window, or outdoors under bright sunlight.

When measuring the screen with a Spyder Elite, the Yoga Slim 9i achieved 100% sRGB, 95% AdobeRGB, 100% DCI-P3 coverage and a maximum brightness of 392 nits. For an OLED display, that AdobeRGB score is particularly impressive – meaning that not only does this device look good, but it is also a viable option for creators and designers.  

The maximum refresh rate on the 9i is 90Hz. The laptop automatically defaults to 60Hz, so you’ll need to head into the display settings if you want to alter this. This will be a welcome addition for those who enjoy a bit of casual gaming or just smoother scrolling, but it will hit battery life slightly.

The display is touchscreen compatible. Whilst I found this to be quick and responsive to gestures, swipes and presses, the screen does pick up fingerprints and marks very easily – you’ll have to maintain upkeep on this device to keep it smudge free.  

The audio hardware on the Yoga Slim 9i is impressive. The laptop comes with four speakers, with sound by Bowers & Wilkins and Dolby Atmos support. Altogether, this results in colourful, loud audio with punchy bass levels. It’s a joy for watching Netflix, playing games and listening to music on.

Specs & performance 

The Lenovo Yoga Slim 9i features an Intel Core i7 processor from the latest (at time of writing) 12th-gen range, alongside 16GB of RAM and 512GB of storage. You can create custom configurations on the Lenovo website, and in other markets such as the US, the laptop comes with higher RAM and storage options.

The specific chip used in this model is the Core i7-1280P. Part of the Alder Lake-P series, this chip delivers a balance between efficiency and performance into a slim and light laptop. It also features integrated Intel Iris Xe graphics, but there’s no option for a discrete GPU.

Day-to-day performance is solid, quick and responsive. I’ve used this device for numerous tasks at once, editing photos, taking video calls and even some light gaming, and it was able to do it all without a hitch.  

Under our benchmarking tests, you can see that the Yoga Slim 9i manages to keep pace with other laptops of a similar price from the likes of Huawei and LG.

Fast speeds helps juice the laptop quickly 

Under our continuous video loop battery test, the Lenovo Yoga Slim 9i achieved 8 hours and 37 minutes. However, the real world battery life doesn’t always match up to these levels. I was able to make it around four hours with the best performance enabled, using multiple applications and listening to music throughout the day. 

Of course, there are things you can do to conserve the battery. Lenovo’s own Vantage software lets you choose battery saver or adaptive performance modes, rather than extreme performance. You can also turn on conservation mode in the quick settings bar to protect the battery long term.

The laptop comes with 65W charger, which can be used with any of the three USB-C ports. Lenovo includes rapid charge feature (this must be enabled in Lenovo Vantage), which the company claims can give the device up to two hours’ worth of use in just 15 minutes.  

With this enabled, I was able to juice the laptop to 39% from flat in 30 minutes, which is not quite as fast as what we’ve seen from rival devices.

There are some preinstalled Lenovo apps such as Lenovo Vantage for information on your device, Lenovo Hotkeys for finding keyboard shortcuts and Lenovo Voice for controlling your PC via voice commands.  

Lenovo is not quite the worst offender for bloatware, but for some these apps may get on your nerves – especially when the notifications pop up when you least want them (don’t make this writer’s mistake of not turning them off and having annoying pings during a Zoom call).

Price & availability 

In the UK, the Lenovo Yoga Slim 9i starts from £1,499 – though you can add additional configurations such as a 4K screen and more storage for an additional cost. At the time of writing, Lenovo has some Black Friday offers available.

US readers can only get this laptop with a 4K screen and double the amount of RAM, which means that the starting price is a tad more expensive at $2,070. However, the processor and design remain the same.

For the performance and design, this price falls largely in line with what is on offer from competitors. The main let-down is battery life – so if that is a concern, it’s worth looking at either the Huawei MateBook 14s or even the Apple MacBook Air (M1) if you’re happy to let go of the Windows experience.  Neither of these are the latest model anymore, meaning there should be some useful discounts.

The Lenovo Yoga Slim 9i has a gorgeous, unique design and pairs it with competitive performance that is suited both for work and for leisure, especially with its powerful speakers and bright, high-quality screen.   

The sub-standard battery life may be an annoyance to some, as will the lack of physical ports for people who connect multiple devices at once. The touchscreen is also prone to picking up fingerprint marks.  

Nonetheless, this is overall a great all-round device from Lenovo, and one to consider if you’re looking to make an investment in your next laptop.
