London is to get a third flagship Apple Store, this one very close to the world-famous Harrods department store. Apple Brompton Road is located at a suitably prestigious location, which the Royal Institute of British Architects refers to as “the gateway to Knightsbridge.”
Knightsbridge is an upscale shopping area with many designer stores. These include Christian Louboutin, Gucci, Hermes, Jimmy Choo, and more. The store is directly opposite Harvey Nichols, another very well-known upmarket department store.
BackgroundApple currently has two flagship retail stores in central London – one in Covent Garden, the other on Regent Street.
The company has additional stores in shopping centers on both the east and west sides of the capital.
Apple Brompton RoadApple’s website said that the store will open on July 28.

The store forms part of a major redevelopment of the upmarket shopping area as part of a deal that was first reported by London’s Evening Standard back in 2023.
Tech giant Apple is poised to plant its flag in one of London’s most luxurious shopping areas as it bolsters its presence in the capital, the Evening Standard can reveal.
Property sources said the iPhones maker has agreed to open a 20,000 square feet Knightsbridge store between high-end department stores Harrods and Harvey Nichols.
It is understood to have signed a deal with Chelsfield, the property asset manager overseeing the makeover of The Knightsbridge Estate.
Ultimate Pocket reported that the store will have an area dedicated to augmented reality experiences.
To celebrate the store’s opening, Apple has a lineup of free music, art, and wellness sessions taking place at the store between July 28-31. Live performances and Q&As are scheduled over the weekend, and there will be a “fantastical AR realm” for visitors to experience inside the store, along with a special guest DJ set on July 28.
Architects Fletcher Priest said that The Knightsbridge Estate redevelopment will include major improvements to the tube station, as well as a new rooftop garden and restaurant.
Knightsbridge Estate is a major mixed use redevelopment at the heart of one of London’s most prestigious shopping district. Our design seeks to reinvigorate, restore and celebrate this key London city block by unlocking space for contemporary retail, offices and new apartments grouped around a sheltered open roof garden.
Public realm improvements include wider pavements along Brompton Road with a new improved entrance to Knightsbridge Underground Station. A landscaped pocket square off Hooper’s Court will be home to an additional step-free access to the tube station that brings back to life redundant London Underground infrastructure. By dedicating a significant rooftop cooling system to London Underground, the scheme will unlock its plan to increase the speed and frequency of Piccadilly Line trains.
The development will see the corner of Brompton Road and Sloane Street restored as the gateway to Knightsbridge. At the first floor cast metal arched vaults will replace the underground station which was a late addition to the corner. Further along the Brompton Road the ground floors of buildings will be restored so that individual gabled ‘houses’ are reconnected to the street.
A new 100,000sq ft office building will be created with an entrance on Hoopers Court. An oasis of calm is introduced to the heart of the development – a formal garden around which are grouped 35 new apartments. Above, there will be a rooftop restaurant masked by a series of perforated, angled shutters that are designed to act as a screen to protect the privacy of residents and angle the diners’ views towards the sunset over Harrods rooftops to the west.
Apple started recruiting staff for the store back in February.

Flagship Apple Store Coming To San Jose’s Westfield Valley Fair Mall
Following Apple’s ambitious retail expansion promise last fall, plans for larger and modernized stores that form greater community connections have steadily revealed themselves. From Florida to Vancouver to Barcelona, Apple looks set to fulfill its word with a myriad of concurrent construction projects. Close to home, changes are also afoot. San Jose’s Westfield Valley Fair shopping mall is in the midst of a massive expansion that will include a brand new flagship Apple Store.
While Apple and the mall operators it works with typically remain silent on store expansion plans, Valley Fair owner Unibail-Rodamco-Westfield hasn’t been shy about heralding the exciting news. In its most recent financial results press release (thanks for the tip, Alec!), the real estate company depicts the future in plain language:
URW signed a new two-level flagship Apple store in Westfield Valley Fair. The indoor/outdoor location will feature a spectacular facade facing the new outdoor dining precinct.
In an overview of expansion and renovation projects at various mall properties, more context is added:
Apple will open a new store which will anchor the extension. The new flagship will be located just a few miles from Apple’s headquarters. Despite being under construction, the centre continues to perform well with strong sales growth in 2023 (+4.0%).
Based on recent plans, Valley Fair’s new outdoor plaza will be just one of the many shopping districts where Apple is beginning to implement next generation multilevel flagship mall stores sharing more refined layouts and design elements. Similar configurations detailed for Atlanta’s Lenox Square, Virginia’s Tysons Galleria, and Vancouver’s Pacific Centre establish a new pattern of the most underserved stores being replaced with a family of highly significant spaces.

San Jose shoppers will know just how significant of an upgrade this is for Valley Fair’s Apple Store. Apple’s space today is crowded, tired, and lacks the visibility to become a central icon in the mall. The new space should be ideal for drawing visitors in to a Today at Apple session with a huge Video Wall facing the mall plaza.

It remains to be seen how Apple will handle locations like Los Gatos, where property expansion opportunities are limited and historic downtown character must be maintained. Earlier this year, it was reported that Arden Fair’s mall store will receive a Video Wall and Forum rather than a full expansion.

If there’s any company with a lengthy Chromebook resume, it’s Acer. The company has made Chromebooks for eight years and counting, the latest being the Acer Chromebook 714.
When Acer unveiled the Chromebook 714 earlier this year, the company positioned the laptop as a business-oriented option. That said, how well does it hold up in the consumer world, and is it worth picking up for those not in business? Welcome to our review of the Acer Chromebook 714.
What I like about the Acer Chromebook 714
There’s plenty to like about the Chromebook 714:
Performance: For context, I used the Chromebook 714 as my primary work machine. I usually had between 15 and 20 tabs open at any given time, with YouTube and Spotify sometimes in the background throughout the day. Even with this workload, the Chromebook 714’s Core i3 processor and 8GB of RAM had no issue keeping up.
Long-lasting battery: Acer rates the battery for up to 12 hours of use. While I didn’t get that far with the Chromebook 714, it lasted me from 9:00am to 5:30pm every day with a 20% charge still in the tank. Another hour of lighter usage checking my emails, going through Reddit, and wedding prep drained the remaining bit of battery. If battery anxiety is something you get, you can relax with this laptop.
Great build quality: I absolutely loved the aluminum build of the Chromebook 714. The minimal design and darker aluminum give it a professional look. The keyboard deck barely flexed, the hinge let me open the laptop with one finger, and there were no signs of fingerprints.
Trackpad: Even with the slight rattling, I’d argue the Chromebook 714’s trackpad is the best on a Chromebook. The Gorilla Glass-covered surface meant my fingers glided across it. It also meant the trackpad was responsive to all of the supported gestures, which include pinch-to-zoom, two-finger scrolling, a three-finger swipe up to show all windows, and a two-finger swipe to the left and right to go back and forward, respectively. The large size only seals the deal.
What about the Acer Chromebook 315?
The Acer Chromebook 315 is the Chromebook 714’s larger, cheaper cousin. It’s notable for being one of the first Chromebooks with an AMD processor, but it’s generally nice to see a Chromebook with a 15.6-inch display. Unfortunately, it’s not nice to use the Chromebook 315.
Where do I even start? The display bezels reminded me of 10-year-old laptops, the 15.6-inch Full HD display itself was dim with washed-out colors, the keyboard was mushy and shallow, and the space bar often didn’t register a press.
The biggest issue was performance. The Chromebook 315 configuration featured the dual-core AMD A4-9120C processor, 4GB of RAM, and 32GB of storage. Simply put, there wasn’t enough horsepower to keep up with my daily workflow.
The Acer Chromebook 315 is decent, but there are better options for less.
It wasn’t all bad. The trackpad was responsive and recognized all of the gestures, the battery lasted me all day, the $299.99 price tag for this configuration is tempting, and the 3.97-pound weight makes the Chromebook 315 surprisingly light for a laptop its size.
I readily admit I’m not the target audience for the Chromebook 315. If you stick to less-demanding tasks and don’t want to spend too much money, the $299 Chromebook 315 is a decent buy. Just remember there are better options for less, such as the excellent Lenovo Chromebook C330.
Should you buy the Acer Chromebook 714?
There are plenty of affordable Chromebooks available, and that’s not a bad thing. With price points ranging from $499.99 to $799.99, the Chromebook 714 isn’t for those who are buying on a budget.

2 Easy Ways To Open Images With Camera Raw In Photoshop
If you’re a photographer, you likely work or will at some point work with raw photos, which means you’ll need to know how to use Camera Raw. Camera Raw allows you to make basic edits to raw photos before you begin working on them in Photoshop. To edit these images in Camera Raw, you need to first know these two easy ways to open them.
Let’s explore how to open images in Camera Raw from both Photoshop and Adobe Bridge if you’re still culling images.
How To Open Images In Camera RawWhen working with Photoshop, you may prefer to make basic edits in Camera Raw instead of using Photoshop’s tools, both to save time and file space. Editing images in Camera Raw is faster and the adjustments are non-destructive, meaning you can easily undo or change them without completely altering the file.
Camera Raw is integrated into Photoshop seamlessly, so it’s fairly easy to use. There are two simple ways to open images in Camera Raw when using Photoshop.
1. Open A RAW File Into PhotoshopThe easiest way to open an image in Camera Raw is to open a raw image file into Photoshop. RAW image files differ depending on which camera you use. Nikon’s raw files are NEF or NRW, while Canon’s are CR2. Certain laptops may prevent you from viewing this format until you open the image in Photoshop or Bridge.
2. Apply A Camera Raw Filter To A LayerThe other way to open an image with Camera Raw in Photoshop is a good method to use if you want to edit a jpeg image with the adjustments in Camera Raw. You can access Camera Raw to edit the photo by applying a Camera Raw filter to the layer.
This will effectively open up Camera Raw, giving you access to all the adjustments that come with Camera Raw to edit your selected layer. This is useful if you’d like to make basic adjustments easily in Photoshop but the photo you’re working with isn’t a RAW file.
Using Adobe Camera Raw With Smart ObjectsYou can also use Camera Raw while working with Smart Objects in Photoshop. Many photo editors like to do this because converting a layer to a Smart Object means that any adjustments you make to that layer will be non-destructive. As a result, you can make and save edits without changing the file information. This makes it easy to undo any edits you make.
To use Camera Raw as a Smart Smart Filter, first, duplicate the layer you’re working on with Control + J (Win) or Command + J (Mac). You’ll then see the duplicate layer show up in the Layers Panel – if the layer you duplicated was Layer 1, the new layer will automatically show up as Layer 1 copy.
Using this method, the edits you make in Camera Raw will be visible beneath the layer once you save them, labeled Camera Raw Filter, making it easy to get rid of the edits by deleting this adjustment.
Using Camera Raw with a Smart Object is a great way to reduce the number of layers you’d need to accomplish the same edits using other Photoshop tools, which in turn reduces the file size allowing you to save space on your computer.
How To Open Camera Raw From Adobe BridgeCamera Raw provides enough tools to make basic edits to your photo, which might be all you need if you don’t need detailed edits. Luckily, even while working in Adobe’s other programs you can still access Camera Raw for fast, easy, and non-destructive editing.

Open Source Alternatives To Google
Is it feasible to drop Google for a period of time in exchange for unfettered open source alternatives?
When I first pondered the notion of such an idea, I figured I must be losing my mind. Drop Google? The search giant, regardless of how well-intentioned it may be, has an octopus-like hold on the Internet – its tentacles are everywhere.
Oddly enough, though, it turned out to be easier than I expected. Let’s look at the mindset, software choices and habit changes needed to make this idea doable.
Dropping Google
Considering Google’s contributions to the open source world, why would anyone want to stop supporting such a company? Well, the problem with Google is that despite their support of open source developers, their track record with privacy concerns is spotty.
Perhaps even worse, the fact is that we are becoming entirely too dependent on Google products over those from smaller vendors. Everything from document management to revenue generation is almost entirely tied to Google these days. Ask anyone using the Web regularly and the odds are huge they’re using at least one Google product.
So when we think of dropping Google products, we’re really saying that you’re going to be changing your natural behavior when using your computer. Can open source software seriously meet this challenge head on?
It turns out that it really comes down to one thing: software.
The software lineup
Which specific tools and applications are viable options to replace their Google-powered counterparts? After much searching, I ended up with a compilation of known open source applications and one tool that is just another search engine.
Face it, just because we’re trying to break the Google habit doesn’t mean that starting a new search engine from scratch is in order. Instead let’s use existing open source solutions and see if they have what it takes to replace their Google-based counterparts.
Chrome replacement: Initially I looked into Chromium, but found that it’s still too much of a Google product. So clearly that wouldn’t work. Finally after many hours hunting, I settled on Firefox from Mozilla. Yes, Firefox uses Google search by default. Luckily this can be remedied easily by simply switching to something else for handling search queries.
Google search replacement: Don’t shoot the messenger folks – no, technically DuckDuckGoisn’t an open source search engine.
But after looking into managing my own search engine, I decided that DuckDuckGo might be the best alternative to Google after all. In addition to offering a great API, DuckDuckGo does something very important that Google does not. DuckDuckGo doesn’t track you. They also don’t collect any privacy-harming “cookied data” on you, either.
Gmail replacement: I honestly thought I was out of luck finding a Gmail replacement. Luckily it turns out a trip to SourceForge was all that was needed. I found an open source Webmail solution called Roundcube.
Everything you could want from a webmail client from threaded email to multiple sender identities is available within this software package. The only thing I found missing was a list of hosting companies supporting Roundcube, and perhaps indications of spam filtering. Apart from these quibbles, Roundcube looks awesome.
Google Reader replacement: At first I figured I was going to be subjected to a desktop RSS client to replace Google Reader. It turns out that this wasn’t going to be a problem at all. There’s a Web app called NewsBlur that not only feels like a true Google Reader replacement, it’s also open source and imports content from your existing Reader account. How’s that for awesome functionality?
Google Talk replacement: Finding a replacement for Google Talk was brain-dead simple, I just needed to install Ekiga! Using Ekiga is a natural fit as it supports open protocols like SIP and will work on both Linux and Windows.
The only downside I could find is getting other people to install it. Without the second party making that installation happen, you’d be have only a number of short one-way conversations.
Google Docs replacement: This replacement was perhaps the most difficult so far. Sure, one could stick to the proprietary route and use one of the countless alternatives in the collaborative space. But the idea is to use open source software as the alternative. After extensive searching, I finally located something called the “TeamDrive extension” for Open Office.
The good news is that TeamDrive is supporting the open source office suite Open Office. It would also stand to reason this will be carried over to Libre Office in the future as well. The bad news is that the extension itself is freeware – it’s not open source at all. Surely we can give kudos to the extension developers for selecting Open Office rather than Microsoft Office, right?
