In a world where privacy violations and data mining have become routine, Signal brings privacy to the table. Undoubtedly, this led to the sudden spike in popularity of the messaging app, thanks to WhatsApp’s new privacy policy agreement. If you are already using Signal on your iPhone, here are some of the best Signal Messenger tips and tricks to help you further secure your data.

1. Turn on disappearing messages

When you enable this feature, the message you send automatically disappear (get deleted) after the set time. It comes in handy if you share an OTP, private number, or something similar. Here’s how to use it.

I detest this notification as it is irritating and often unnecessary. Here’s how to stop Signal from bombarding you with notifications of your friends joining it.

In the Signal app, tap your profile picture at the top left.

Turn off the switch for Contact Joined Signal.

Now, you won’t see any notification about your contacts joining Signal.

13. Change what is shown on the notification preview

You can also configure what is visible in the chat and call notification when your phone is locked. For this, open Signal and tap your profile picture located at the top left. Next, tap Notifications. Now, tap Show and choose one of the three options:

Name, Content, and Actions: This will show the name and message plus allow you to reply straight from the notification on the Lock Screen or the iOS Notifications Center.

Name Only: The notification will only show the sender’s name but no actual message content. You can not reply to this notification directly from the lock screen or the Notification Center.

No Name or Content: The notification will show ‘New Message!’ No name or anything else. You can not reply to this notification directly from the lock screen or the Notification Center.

14. App Switcher screen security

When you double press the iPhone home button or swipe up from the bottom of the screen and hold, you enter App Switcher. It has cards for all open applications. Many bank apps hide their app preview the moment you enter App Switcher. If you like, Signal lets you do the same.

Tap Privacy.

Toggle on Enable Screen Security.

Enter App Switcher, and you will see the blue Signal screen instead of the in-app content preview.

Note: Signal on Android lets you turn on a setting that prevents the other person from taking a screenshot, just like Snapchat. However, as of now, this feature is not on the iOS version.

15. Save mobile data by choosing what is automatically downloaded

Tap your profile picture and choose Data Usage.

Choose the desired media auto-download settings.

To save both cellular and Wi-Fi data, choose ‘Never.’

To save only cellular data, choose ‘Wi-Fi.’

Signal groups have several settings, like who can add members or edit the group information. You will also find the option to create a group link and then send that link to people over WhatsApp, Messages, etc., asking them to join your Signal group. You can access all these by tapping on the group name from the chat screen.

Want more privacy on Signal calls? Relay calls via Signal’s server. This will reduce the call quality but won’t reveal your IP address to the other person on call.

Go to Signal and tap your profile picture at the top left.

19. Choose the dark mode for night chats

Note: If you have not set a passcode for your iPhone and enabled this option in Signal, you may get stuck on the app’s authentication screen. If this happens, open the iPhone Settings app → Face ID & Passcode → and enable passcode for the device. Now, open Signal, enter the iPhone passcode.

Signal now has made it mandatory to set a PIN when you create your account. This PIN protects your accounts and is needed while restoring a local backup, identity verification, etc. Now, to add an extra layer of security, you can enable an option that makes it mandatory to enter this PIN when you set up your Signal account on a different device with the same phone number (or the same account after deleting and reinstalling the app).

For this, go to Signal Settings, tap Privacy, and enable Registration Lock.

22. Clear all chat messages

This will allow you to clear all the text messages, media, calls, attachments, etc., at once. For this, open Signal Settings, tap Privacy, scroll to the bottom, and tap Clear Chat History.

All Signal chats are end-to-end encrypted. But if you still have reservations, you can verify and be extra sure before you share extremely sensitive information.

Open an individual chat and tap its name at the top.

Tap View Safety Number. Here you will see a QR code and a long number.

Ask the other person to follow the first two steps as well.

Now, match the number you see on your screen with that on your contact’s screen. If both numbers are the same, that means the chat between you two is end-to-end encrypted, and no intermediary can snoop in and read your messages.

Tip to ease the verification process: Tap the long number to copy or share it. You can also tap the QR code to launch the camera and hold it over your contact’s QR code to complete the verification.

You may tap ‘Mark as Verified.’ This will show a verified sign below the contact name, giving you peace of mind.

24. Link or unlink chats to iPad or laptop

If you wish to use Signal on your iPad or computer, follow the steps below:

Download and open the Signal app on your Mac, PC, Linux, or iPad. You will see a QR code.

Open Signal Settings on your iPhone and tap Linked Devices → Link New Device.

Photoshop Blend Modes Tips And Tricks

In this tutorial, you’ll learn time-saving tips and tricks for working with layer blend modes in Photoshop! I’ll show you how to easily scroll through the blend modes to see how each one affects your image, how to instantly jump to the exact blend mode you need, and even how to adjust the intensity of a blend mode, all directly from your keyboard! We’ll cover every blend mode shortcut you need to know to speed up your workflow, and I’ll even include a tip to make memorizing those shortcuts a whole lot easier.

I’ll be using Photoshop CC but any recent version will work. Let’s get started!

What we’ll be learning

To help us learn the tips and tricks, I’ll use Photoshop to blend a texture with an image. Here’s the image I’ll be using. I downloaded this one from Adobe Stock:

Where to find the layer blend modes

Photoshop’s blend modes are all found in the upper left of the Layers panel, and the default blend mode is Normal:

Before we go any further, it’s important to know the difference between a layer blend mode and a tool blend mode, and I’ll tell you why in a moment. Layer blend modes are all found in the Layers panel, and they control how a layer blends with the layers below it. But some of Photoshop’s tools also include their own blend modes. Most of the brush tools and the painting tools have their own separate blend modes that affect the tool itself and are completely separate from the layer blend modes in the Layers panel.

If I choose the Brush Tool from the Toolbar:

We see in the Options Bar that it has its own Blend Mode option with its own modes to choose from. They may look the same as the blend modes in the Layers panel, but they’re not. These blend modes affect the appearance of your brush strokes. They have no effect on any layers:

And it’s not just the Brush Tool that has its own blend modes. Other brush-related tools, like the Spot Healing Brush, the Clone Stamp Tool, and the Eraser Tool, all have their own blend modes. And so does the Gradient Tool and even the Paint Bucket Tool. In fact, most of the brush and painting tools have them:

The reason you need to know this is that if you have one of these tools selected, you may accidentally select the tool’s blend mode when you really meant to select a layer blend mode. So to use the shortcuts we’re about to learn to switch between layer blend modes, first make sure you have a tool selected that doesn’t have its own blend modes. The Move Tool works great, and so do any of Photoshop’s selection tools. I’ll grab the Move Tool from the Toolbar, which you can also select by pressing the letter V:

How to scroll through layer blend modes

Let’s look at how to quickly scroll through the layer blend modes to see the effect that each one has on our image.

To usual (slow) way to try blend modes in Photoshop

How to scroll through layer blend modes from your keyboard

While that’s one way to work, there’s a faster way, and that’s by scrolling through the blend modes from your keyboard. I’ll set my blend mode back to Normal:

Then, to scroll forward through the blend modes, press and hold the Shift key on your keyboard and tap the plus sign (+) repeatedly. Once you’ve moved through all 27 blend modes, you’ll return to the Normal blend mode. To scroll backwards through the list, keep your Shift key held down and tap the minus key (–) instead.

How to select blend modes from your keyboard

Scrolling through the blend modes is great when you’re not sure which blend mode you need and just want to experiment. But if you do know which one you need, you can jump straight to it from your keyboard. Photoshop includes keyboard shortcuts for nearly all of its blend modes.

To select a blend mode from your keyboard, press and hold your Shift key, along with your Alt (Win) / Option (Mac) key, and then press the letter that’s associated with the blend mode.

For example, the first blend mode I chose earlier was Multiply. To select the Multiply blend mode from your keyboard, hold Shift+Alt (Win) / Shift+Option (Mac) and press the letter M. The second one I chose was Screen, which you can jump to by holding Shift+Alt (Win) / Shift+Option (Mac) and pressing S. To jump to the Overlay blend mode, hold Shift+Alt (Win) / Shift+Option (Mac) and tap O.

Photoshop’s layer blend mode shortcuts – Complete list

Here’s the complete list of keyboard shortcuts for Photoshop’s layer blend modes. They all share the same two keys at the beginning, either Shift+Alt on a Windows PC or Shift+Option on a Mac. The only difference between them is the specific letter at the end. Some letters are obvious, like “N” for Normal, “M” for Multiply, and “S” for Screen, while others, like “G” for Lighten or “J” for Linear Light, you’ll just remember over time:

The blend modes that are missing shortcuts

Out of Photoshop’s 27 blend modes, only 4 of them are missing shortcuts, and those are Darker Color, Lighter Color, Subtract, and Divide. You’ll rarely, if ever, use these ones, but if you do need them, you’ll have to select them from the Layers panel:

How to avoid memorizing every blend mode shortcut

Here’s a tip to make memorizing the shortcuts easier. Even though there’s 23 shortcuts in total, you really only need to memorize a few of them; one from each of the blend mode groups.

The Darken blend modes

For example, let’s say you want to use one of Photoshop’s darkening blend modes, which include Darken, Multiply, Color Burn, Linear Burn, and Darker Color. To avoid memorizing the shortcut for each one, just memorize the main one, which is Shift+Alt+M (Win) / Shift+Option+M (Mac) for Multiply. Then, use the other shortcut we learned earlier, which is to hold Shift and tap the plus or minus key, to move up or down through the others in the group:

Multiply is the main darkening blend mode.

The Lighten blend modes

The same is true for the other groups as well. To try out the different lighten modes (Lighten, Screen, Color Dodge, Linear Dodge (Add), and Lighter Color), just press Shift+Alt+S (Win) / Shift+Option+S (Mac) to jump to the Screen blend mode. Then hold Shift and use the plus or minus key to scroll through the others:

The Contrast blend modes

For the contrast group (Overlay, Soft Light, Hard Light, Vivid Light, Linear Light, Pin Light, and Hard Mix), press Shift+Alt+O (Win) / Shift+Option+O (Mac) to jump to Overlay, and then scroll through the list:

Overlay is the main blend mode for boosting contrast.

The Color blend modes

And for the color blend modes (Hue, Saturation, Color, and Luminosity), press Shift+Alt+C (Win) / Shift+Option+C (Mac) to jump to the main one, Color, and then scroll to the one you need:

How to adjust the intensity of a blend mode

Finally, if you like the overall look of a blend mode but the effect is too strong, you can adjust the intensity directly from your keyboard. For example, I’ll jump to the Linear Light blend mode by pressing Shift+Alt+J (Win) / Shift+Option+J (Mac):

Press Shift + Alt / Option + J to jump to Linear Light.

I like the colors, but the overall effect is a bit too much:

Lowering the layer opacity from your keyboard

To reduce the intensity of a blend mode, all we need to do is lower the opacity of the layer itself. You can do that from the Opacity option in the Layers panel, but you can also adjust it directly from your keyboard.

Just press a number from 1 to 9 to jump the opacity value between 10% and 90%. For example, I can lower the opacity to 50% by pressing 5 on my keyboard. Or, for a more specific value, like 55%, press the two numbers quickly:

And here’s the result with the opacity lowered:

I’ll switch to a different blend mode, like Screen, by pressing Shift+Alt+S (Win) / Shift+Option+S (Mac). And then, to restore the opacity back to 100%, press 0 on your keyboard:

Press 0 to reset the strength of the blending effect back to 100%.

3D Touch Tips And Tricks For The Stock Videos App

In this day and age of YouTube streaming and on-demand video, the stock Videos app feels a little outdated and way too limited in terms of features though it gets the job done.

With the Videos app, you can watch movies, televisions shows and music videos that you bought or rented from the iTunes Store, as well as enjoy your personal clips synchronized from iTunes on your computer.

On the iPhone 6s and iPhone 6s Plus, using the Videos app is a little more engaging thanks to 3D Touch. In this tutorial, we’ll let you in on 3D Touch shortcuts and gestures that are available in the Videos app.

Continue watching videos from the Home screen

Press the icon of the Videos app on the Home screen of your iPhone 6s or iPhone 6s Plus to access the shortcuts menu. There, you can access up to four most recently watched videos, including ones you haven’t finished watching, those you have watched through to the end and the videos you have recently downloaded from the iTunes Store and didn’t start watching yet.

iOS keeps your watching history synchronized across devices so you can start watching a movie on, say, your Apple TV and pick up right where you left off on another device. And with 3D Touch, continuing a video is as easy as selecting it in the shortcuts menu on the Home screen of your iPhone 6s.

The menu even lists the time remaining (for example, “5 min remaining”) and whether you have watched a video through to the end, in which case you’ll see “Watch again” below the video title.

Preview movies

Tap the Movies tab at the bottom to access the movies downloaded to your device as well as your cloud purchases (as denoted by a cloud icon) that you haven’t downloaded yet. To preview a movie, press it lightly in the movie list. Press a little harder to pop open the item in full screen mode.

Preview TV shows

Like movies, TV shows in the cloud and those you’ve downloaded to your iPhone 6s ore iPhone 6s Plus can be accessed by tapping the TV Shows button at the bottom. You can preview the whole series or individual episodes by pressing an item lightly.

While peeking at the episode, press a tad harder to go full screen. Pressing a TV show season in the list will peek at the available show seasons, as seen below.

Preview music videos

As you may have guessed, previewing music videos downloaded to your device or those in the cloud is the same as peeking at movies and TV show episodes. Just press an item lightly in the music videos list to preview a video, or press a little harder to go full screen.

As mentioned, you can also preview your personal clips with 3D Touch though you’ll need to synchronize them first from iTunes on your computer.

Hiding your cloud purchases

To hide your purchased movies, TV shows and music videos so that you see only the clips downloaded to your device, go to Settings → Videos and toggle the Show iTunes Purchases switch to the OFF position.

There, you can also choose where to resume playback the next time you open a video and sign into Home Sharing with your Apple ID to stream the videos from your computer.

Swipe up from the watch face on your wearable, then tap the icon that looks like an iPhone with some soundwaves around it. If your iPhone is in range (of Bluetooth or Wi-Fi), it’ll make a brief pinging sound you can follow, even if it’s in silent mode.

Press and hold the same button on your Apple Watch, and in addition to the audible sound, your iPhone will also flash the LED light by its rear camera—which should help you find it more quickly, especially in the dark.

4. Transfer shortcuts from your iPhone

The Shortcuts app that comes preinstalled with iOS lets you set up all kinds of combinations of actions on your iPhone, via Siri. 5. Turn off distractions during exercise

You don’t necessarily want any pings or buzzes distracting you while you’re working out, and Apple has thought about this. The Apple Watch can turn its Do Not Disturb mode on automatically, when it senses that you’re in the middle of exercising.

From the Settings app on your Apple Watch, tap Do Not Disturb to turn the Workout Do Not Disturb toggle switch on and off. The same option is available under General and Do Not Disturb in the Apple Watch app on your iPhone, along with an extra Mirror iPhone setting. If you turn this on, the Do Not Disturb state of your watch is mirrored on your phone, and vice versa.

6. Measure noise levels

Are you being exposed to noise levels that aren’t healthy for you? The Noise app on the Apple Watch has you covered, and you can launch it from the main app panel—it’s the one that is the shape of an ear on a yellow background.

If you open Settings on the Apple Watch and then choose Noise, you can get notifications on your wrist when you’re in an environment where the noise level has gone above a certain number of decibels.

7. Share watch faces

You can’t exactly create your own watch faces on the Apple Watch, but you can pick one of the designs that Apple provides and customize it with your own complications, also known as those little widgets that show at-a-glance information.
