There are a few things to factor in when searching for the best wireless keyboard. If you’re looking to update your work-from-home computer gear, you’ll want to keep style, portability, and ergonomics in mind. When you’re working all day at a desk, a wireless ergonomic keyboard can improve your typing posture and lower muscle strain. Is the local coffee shop your version of a home office? When working on the go, a wrist pad can add bulk, and a lightweight, portable keyboard will be a sleeker and more compact choice. Portability is also important for those using a Bluetooth keyboard to connect to tablets and laptops. Still a little unsure? We’ll walk you through the specifics so you can snag a good wireless keyboard.Connectivity
A major consideration is how your keyboard will connect to your device. Some devices utilize a 2.4 GHz radiofrequency with a USB adapter, while others have Bluetooth pairing. If you’re someone who doesn’t want extra computer gear and needs to connect to multiple devices, you might opt for a Bluetooth keyboard. Can’t decide? You’re in luck—a lot of keyboards are both USB- and Bluetooth-capable.Ergonomic wireless keyboards vs. flat wireless keyboards
Some people find that a lot of ergonomic keyboards look clunky or awkward. Fortunately, the best ergonomic keyboards retain style while providing that much-needed wrist relief.Use case
Gamers might be apprehensive about latency in wireless keyboards, but the truth is that wireless gaming equipment has evolved past the days of lag. The best wireless gaming keyboard will have an imperceptible delay with the same features you love—mechanical switches, RGB backlighting, and quick response time. Standard peripherals might restrict your fluidity and tether you to one position, while wireless allows you to sit back and relax.
Gamers should look for a keyboard that is engineered to handle intense gaming sessions and equipped with customizable G-keys.Portability
When you’re multitasking and on the move, a full-size keyboard can hold you down. With a portable Bluetooth keyboard, you can switch between devices with ease and travel without extra weight or tangled cables. The best Bluetooth keyboards are universally compatible with most devices and compact—perfect for those who hunker down with a laptop, tablet, and iPad. You’ll want to look for a lightweight and durable design with a long-lasting battery.
Whether you’re traveling to the office or a different corner of the living room, you need a slim keyboard that can handle the journey.Operating system
Mac users, we didn’t forget you. You don’t always have to buy from Apple, as the majority of USB and Bluetooth keyboards are compatible with Mac computers, but you will want to make sure that any keyboard you choose fully supports Mac’s native keyboard layout. The best wireless keyboards for Mac seamlessly connect to multiple Apple devices and last for months between charges.Budget
We know that wireless keyboards can get pretty expensive, but there are some amazing, affordable options that don’t compromise on quality. If you’re searching for a budget-friendly wireless keyboard, you will want to make sure it is compatible with your system. Keep in mind that cheaper wireless keyboards might not be equipped with simultaneous Bluetooth and USB connections.FAQs Q: How long do wireless keyboards last?
How long a wireless keyboard will last depends on the model you purchase. A caveat to switching to wireless is that you will have to either charge your keyboard or replace the batteries at some point. Some keyboards run on built-in rechargeable batteries, while others just take battery replacements after they wear out. For example, the Logitech K380 we mentioned previously is expected to last for two years before requiring new batteries.Q: How do I connect a wireless keyboard?
How you connect will also depend on the type of wireless keyboard you purchase. Your new equipment should come with a manual and specific instructions for connecting with either Bluetooth or USB. For most Bluetooth devices, you will turn on the keyboard, enter the Bluetooth section of your computer’s settings, and then pair your new device by entering a unique PIN. Some computers will require you to calibrate your new keyboard by pressing a few keys when prompted.Q: How should I clean a wireless keyboard?
Keyboards are a notoriously dirty household item. The best way to clean a wireless keyboard without damaging it is with alcohol wipes. Make sure to power off your device before you disinfect it gently with a cloth dipped in water and isopropyl alcohol. If you’re worried about grime trapped between your keys, you can use a can of compressed air to push the dust out of difficult areas.Q: What is the difference between Bluetooth and wireless?
A wireless keyboard connects to a USB receiver that plugs into one of your USB ports. A Bluetooth keyboard connects via—you guessed it—Bluetooth. Most laptops have Bluetooth connectivity built-in, making Bluetooth keyboards a suitable choice for those looking to build a desk set-up from their work laptop. A wireless keyboard is great for PC users who do not have Bluetooth connectivity. However, you can purchase Bluetooth adapters that plug into a USB port to use Bluetooth wireless keyboards with devices that are not Bluetooth-enabled.Q: Is a wireless keyboard faster than a wired keyboard?
Wireless keyboards are just a hair slower than wired keyboards. Although it’s not noticeable, it does impact gamers who need precision sans input lag. Thankfully, wireless gaming computers, like the Razer Turret, are designed to eliminate this lag.Final thoughts on the best wireless keyboards
The most important part of selecting a good wireless keyboard is ensuring that it is right for your lifestyle. The best part of switching is how many options there are out there, whether you’re looking for a sophisticated wireless mechanical keyboard or a weightless Bluetooth companion. Enjoy your newfound freedom from wires.

The O-Ring Mod seems to be a popular modification on the Geek Hack forums. Basically, you get a bunch of o-rings at the hardware store and put it under your key caps. The idea is that the rubber o-rings muffles the *Clacking* sound when you bottom out the keys. The plastic caps hitting the plastic base creates a harsh and loud clacking sound. Personally, I like the sound but for the sake of a good sleep, I decided to go through with this mod.
I went to my local hardware store and headed down to the plumbing section. The forum said? to look for size -008 standard o-rings but I could not find them anywhere. The o-rings I found used OD (Outer Diameter) and ID (Inner Diameter) measurements. I settle for 4 little boxed of #36 O-Rings which were 5/16 OD, 3/16 ID, and 1/16 in thickness. These o-rings were rather expensive at $2 per box and it only came with 10 o-rings each. If you can get it cheaper online, I would suggest you do that if you dont mind the wait.
Installation was easy. First, remove your key caps. Either use a special tool or improvise. I used the wire from a pair of cheap headphones and a nail clipper. I pushed the wire under the key cap with the help of the nail clipper. Then I spaced the wires evenly and carefully pulled upwards until the key caps popped out. Pay special care when doing wide keys like the spacebar, shift, enter, and backspace. I then placed one o-ring for each Cherry MX switch. Wider keys have stabilizers which need more o-rings for even distribution. For example, the spacebar has the Cherry MX switch in the center and two stabilizer pylons so I used 3 o-rings. Same goes for the backspace and shift keys. Refer to the picture for an idea of how I do this. Then, repeat. I only had 40 o-rings so I wasnt able to do my complete keyboard. I will probably finish that up in the weekend. For now, I have o-rings under my most used keys omitting the numbers, F-keys, arrow keys, and right-side keys.
Step 1: Get string or wire under key cap Step 2: Center string and pull up carefully Step 3: Get O-Ring Step 4: Slide o-ring deep into key cap Step 5: Firmly reinstall key cap
At first, the results were underwhelming. They only appeared to muffle the sound slightly. Almost as if it was still the same volume, just at another pitch. It was a lower sound. After a few day, I did notice it was noticeably quieter. I suppose, during the daytime, there was a lot white noise in the background which distracted from the performance. At night, the slightest sounds are amplified. At first, I wasnt too sure if the mod was worth the effort and cost. Now, I can say for sure that they’re worth it. The keys bottom out sooner. About 1/16th of an inch sooner but it is barely noticeable. This mod does not change the switch activation point, just the bottoming point. The keys do feel slightly different. The unmodded keys feel lighter while the silenced keys feels a bit mushy. Its not bad. I think the audible *clack* had a psychological impact on the feeling. Overall, I think this was a good mod. If you dont want to wake up a college roommate or want to be more discreet while typing, then this mod is worth the time and effort. If you can, order or buy in bulk. It should save you more money. I also noticed that I typed a bit faster. Maybe I was getting used to the keyboard but when taking a typing test, I scored higher than average. This mod is fairly easy to do. If you want to make your mechanical keyboard quieter, give this mod a chance. You will like the results.
Keyboards are of two kinds: (1) the cheapo, no-name slabs that are bundled by the millions with PCs, and (2) the ones that are actually worth using—and in most cases, that’s a mechanical keyboard. Stalwart friend to gamers and power typists alike, the mechanical keyboard’s physical operation and durability make it the gold standard for computer use. It’s not the only option out there—good alternatives abound for wireless, ergonomic, and other purposes—but if nothing else, ditching that freebie is something everyone should do. Read on to learn more about why a mechanical keyboard should be in your future. Why mechanicals are worth the money
Even though mechanical keyboards tend to cost a bit more, their build quality is worth it. Rather than lay down some cheap membrane layers and rubber-domed keys, these bad boys sport heavy-duty switches and functional parts. This makes them durable, and it also gives them tactile feedback that detects a keystroke before the key bottoms out. That means that with a little practice, your fingers are doing only half the work, sparing them a world of hurt.
Key ghosting occurs when a keyboard can’t distinguish a keystroke. The above are examples of indistinguishable key presses since they share rows and columns on the keyboard matrix.
Mechanical keyboards also multitask better. Gamers out there will understand the frustrations of holding down multiple keys (for example, sprinting forward while reloading) and hitting one last key for the ultimate grenade kill, then nothing. Did you screw up and miss the key? Not likely. Key ghosting happens when three keys are held down and a fourth keystroke doesn’t register, due to hardware or software limitations on matrix keyboards (keyboards that use multiple keys on the same circuit). Mechanical keyboards handle this issue with Key Rollover, which provides more consecutive keystrokes than the rubber-domed keyboards allow—usually six with a USB connection, and infinite over the older PS/2 connection.Which switch is right for you?
Cherry switches (manufactured by ZF Electronics, formerly Cherry Corporation) are the most common type. Every type is denoted by a color and varies in actuation force (how much pressure is required to actuate) and in audibility levels.
Cherry MX Red (Linear switch)
The lower actuation force makes rapid keystrokes much easier than MX Black switches, but mistyping is also a more common issue. Certain games require quicker actuation, such as first-person shooters, while others, such as real-time strategy games, require accuracy. It’s up to the gamer to decide which works best. Cherry MX Red switches are generally more expensive due to higher demand.
Cherry MX Brown (Tactile)
Cherry MX Brown is the quietest of the tactile bunch and requires very little actuation force (45 grams). Like the other Cherry switches, it actuates at 2 millimeters, but it can travel as far as 4 millimeters to the bottom.
Cherry MX Clear (Tactile)
Cherry MX Clear switches are considered the “stiffer browns.” Their actuation force is 55 grams, with a peak force (force to press the key all the way down) of 65 grams.
They’re often compared to the feel and sound of a rubber-domed keyboard, with a more tactile feel and higher actuation force. Though some enjoy the stiffer resistance, they’re not as popular as other types and are generally difficult to find on today’s keyboards.
Buckling Spring (Tactile)
Topre switches are so new that they’re still tough to find. They act as a hybrid between mechanical and membrane: A rubber dome sits over a spring that creates a capacitive circuit when pressed.
The actuation force depends on the model but can vary between 30 and 60 grams. The key actuates at the half way point, then a tactile bump can be felt. Bottoming out is common since the resistance disappears after the actuation. They are some of the quietest and smoothest switches available, even when compared to linear switches.

The first attempts at a mobile telephone were developed by Western Electronic Corporation which was also the main supplier to the US Bell System, the network of landline telephones in operation at the time.
Remember the suitcase mobile phones? Well, imagine carrying around a full type 38 or 39 VHF FM Police radio in the early 1950s. This would connect to a bell located in a user’s car which would then act as a landline telephone number.
A telephone-like handset was manufactured for a better user experience which run through a selective calling decoder which helped the carphone setup connect, but ti wasn’t exactly practical.
The FM mobile bands would be split into two types of bandings by Bell, ‘Highway’ and ‘Urban’. The former would provide a business use 12 channel low band VHF service to trucks and barges on inland waterways. Urban would provide mobile telephone services for private users, with both bands going live in August and June 1946 respectively.
Just two years later in 1948, the Urban service was available in 60 cities in the US and Canada. 4000 subscribers strong handling 117,000 calls seems minuscule by today’s standards, but this is before the glory days of the Nokia 3310.
Highway had a bigger coverage area but a smaller adoption rate, with the service being live in 85 cities with a 1900 mobile subscriber base that handled 36,000 calls per month. Most highways in the east and mid-west had coverage, which came in ridiculously handy for truckers all over the US.
The problem with this technology was its size. The mobile transmitter and receiver units would be mounted in a car’s luggage compartment, taking up quite a lot of space. The telephone receiver and radio unit would usually be fixed underneath the dash in the middle of the drive and passenger seats.
Over the years, mobile phone technology has become smaller and smaller thanks to developments in smaller electrical resistors and batteries. Mobile phone adoption picked up steam almost 60 years after the Bell system mobile carphones thanks to the need for battery packs being shrunk down and built into mobile phones themselves.
Nokia rules the mobile phone space during the late 90s and early 200s thanks to the indestructible Nokia 3210/3310 line. This period also saw the introduction of text messaging and customizable handsets. Users could buy custom phone cases and key sets to make the ultimate technology statement.
Carphones aren’t really a thing in the 2023s, with newer car models coming pre-loaded with technology able to synchronize with iPhones. This makes for a hands-free experience, allowing users to use Maps, play music, and call contacts with one gesture or voice commands.
But there are still some users without a big screen on their dashboard. Even if a user did, they still need somewhere to place their phone that’s easily accessible at a moment’s notice. This is why we’ve created the best car mount for iPhone guide.
