40 Years Of Cell Phones: Have They Changed Your Life?
It may be hard to believe, but this week we celebrate forty years of cell phones. The first cell phone call was placed in 1973, but these devices didn’t begin to change our lives until the last ten to fifteen years. Think of how different our lives would be today had former Motorola Vice President and division manager Martin Cooper not made that first call on a cell phone while standing on Sixth Avenue in front of the New York Hilton.
Cooper touched something off with that call, even if it did take several years before they began to impact all of our lives. He was using Motorola’s DynaTAC handset. It was so different than the Androids and iPhones that we use today that it weighed over two pounds. It certainly didn’t fit in Cooper’s pocket, and there was no talk of how big the screen was or the resolution of the camera. It was just a phone, and a big one at that.
Even Cooper is surprised at all the changes that have been made to cell phones over these forty years, yet he sees all these additional things added to cell phones as “essentially useless.” He beleives all the things today’s cell phone can do can be done much more effectively elsewhere. This is true, but you still can’t beat the convenience.
In these forty years of cell phones, they have gone from huge devices meant solely for making and receiving calls on-the-go to pocket-sized devices that can do nearly everything a computer can do. While Cooper is thinking that all of these things on a cell phone are “essentially useless,” I’m thinking of how all these things have changed my life.
I don’t have to worry about carrying a camera to special events. I always have one with me on my iPhone. If I’m out shopping and want to buy something, but I’m not sure how much money is left in the checking account, I can check that on a bank app. While I’m waiting at a doctor’s office, I don’t have to read their magazines; I can either get work done or read my own magazine on my iPhone. I know where my kids are, because we keep in touch via our cell phones. And I don’t have to go as far as to call someone every time I want them to know just a little thing that just occurred to me. I can text them instead.
I went out to dinner one night last week and forgot to bring my phone. I noticed it within five minutes of being gone, but didn’t want to go back for it. I didn’t want it just in case someone called. I wanted to be able to text the people we were meeting up with to tell them we’d be late. I wanted it to snap some pictures of the gathering. I wanted to check my calendar for appointments for the following week and wanted to check my email. I was lost without it.
In these forty years of cell phones, they have completely changed my life, and I think they have changed most others as well and become more than just a phone with features that aren’t “essentially useless.” What do you think? Why Don’T Phones Use A Laptop Configuration Model?

Phones sell in much, much higher volumes than computers. Gartner researchers noted that companies sold over 366.6 million smartphones in the third quarter of 2023 alone. Comparatively, there were roughly 71.4 million PC shipments — and that’s in a pandemic-struck market in which laptops are faring better than they have in a long time.
Those kinds of manufacturing scales make it considerably harder to offer a custom phone configuration. More choices add more steps to manufacturing. That can slow down production that frequently needs to move as quickly as possible. Fewer shipped phones, in turn, leaves companies recouping their costs with higher prices. If you don’t like paying a premium for a phone like the Galaxy S21 or iPhone 12, you’ll like it even less if you have to pay extra for the privilege of choosing your screen resolution or processor.
And let’s not forget the logistics of supporting these options. The fewer phone configurations there are, the easier it is to develop software updates and offer customer service. OS upgrade schedules and device repairs can already take a long time now. It won’t get any easier if there’s a myriad of bugs that only appear with specific part combinations.
It’s technically difficult
The very nature of smartphone design makes customization very challenging. While laptops are frequently large enough to have swappable modules (if just at the factory), phones are small, tightly-packed devices with little to no breathing room. Processors, graphics, memory, and storage are soldered in, and companies have removed features like headphone jacks just to free up space. Even making 5G optional could require a different set of antennas. As such, modular components are a tough sell. They tend to occupy more real estate as a matter of course.
Standards pose a problem as well — or rather, the lack of them. It’s relatively easy for laptop makers to offer configuration options when they’re built on established standards like CPU sockets, RAM slots, and storage interfaces. Phone builders, however, don’t have those luxuries. They either have to develop their own processes for swappable parts or hope the industry will move to common formats. Unfortunately, neither is very likely.
There are technical hurdles for both hardware and software.
Let’s not forget software, either. Android doesn’t have a PC-like approach to drivers. The kernel has to be configured for specific hardware, and offering a wide range of component choices could make those kernel tweaks nightmarishly complex. That’s not including firmware updates, or accommodating varying hardware specs in apps — how would a hybrid zoom feature adapt to multiple camera choices? You could expect significant delays in OS updates, and you might get fewer of those updates.
Google illustrated many of the difficulties involved with its ill-fated Project Ara. Prototypes suggested the fully modular phone concept could work. However, the company had to develop a module standard from scratch, marshal support from partners, and explore many iterations. It’s not surprising that Google delayed and eventually killed the project when there was little to show after years of development. It would get somewhat easier to configure phones without user-replaceable modules, but vendors would still have more work ahead of them than if they simply went with static designs.

There’s also the looming question of whether or not custom phone configuration would make a difference. Phones are quickly becoming powerful enough that even a mid-priced phone like the Pixel 4a 5G can satisfy the needs of many people. Why customize your phone with a faster CPU or a sharper display if the improvements would be negligible, especially if there’s a higher-end phone model available?

People still buy dedicated alarm clocks? Are you using your smartphone as an alarm clock? It’s easy to grab a dock and an app to create an Android powered alarm clock. Android 4.2 Jelly Bean might have added Daydream to make your alarm clock look more beautiful, but you don’t need to have the latest and greatest Android tablet or smartphone to use it as an alarm clock.

The organization wanted Samsung to commit to providing updates for at least four years after each of its Android phones goes on sale, or for at least two years after they were last sold. Samsung was insufficiently informing phone purchasers about just how long they could expect to get software updates and security patches, the Consumentenbond argued. The case ended up in The Hague, where Samsung argued that it was upfront about the fact that it committed to two years of software updates. New patches and updates, it insisted, were pushed out in a “reasonable” timeframe. That involved doing individual testing to make sure Google’s code played nicely with Samsung’s devices, it pointed out.
In the end, the court ruled in Samsung’s favor. In particular, it disagreed with Consumentenbond’s arguments about future risks: those, it countered, were too nebulous to be acted upon now. “Future acts” can’t be quantified today, and as such “the court declared the Consumentenbond inadmissible for demanding updates in the future because this requirement would insufficiently take account of future developments,” the group said.
The court also agreed with Samsung that it was sufficiently communicating to buyers just what they could expect in terms of updates after purchasing an Android phone. However Consumentenbond is claiming a victory there, even if it’s not one that comes as a result of a court ruling. Samsung, it points out, now has a much larger banner on its homepage with links to the update policy.

Timely Android updates are a long-standing criticism of the platform, and a complex issue to deal with. On the one hand, very few existing Android phones ever get updates to the latest version of Google’s OS. At the same time, however, Google also issues software patches for security issues of varying severity, and it’s very much manufacturer-dependent as to whether they ever reach users.
