F8 2023 day 2 puts new Facebook AI in the spotlight
Mark Zuckerberg may have spent much of the Facebook F8 2023 opening keynote on handling the social network’s privacy fallout, but day two sees the tech – and AI and machine learning – come right to the fore. The second day keynote at the social site’s annual developer event is, arguably, always more interesting from a geeky perspective.
Last year, for example, Facebook revealed it had been researching some tech you’d more commonly associate with science-fiction movies. “Project: Hear With Your Skin,” for instance, was all about delivering language through skin contact. A second project explored using mind-reading to type, rather than using a physical keyboard or voice recognition.
For F8 2023, the tech is a little less esoteric. Artificial Intelligence (AI) is at the fore, along with Facebook attempting to build out its collaborative toolkit with other developers. Arguably the biggest news is the open-source PyTorch 1.0 AI framework, which Facebook says will be released in the coming months.
The original version of PyTorch was released roughly a year ago, but this new version will be swifter to take experiments to deployment. It’ll be the centerpiece of a new AI-focused site, chúng tôi which launches today. It won’t be alone, however. ONNX – or Open Neural Network Exchange – is being updated to support more tools, including conversion to Core ML, Baidu PaddlePaddle, Qualcomm SNPE, Google’s TensorFlow, and Microsoft’s Cognitive Toolkit, among others.
For those who don’t want to go as deep as the AI basics, there’ll also be new specific tools across vision, language, and learning. Come June, there’ll be a new ResNext3D model for comprehending video, while Translate for machine translations is being open-sourced too.
Some of the upcoming additions have seriously interesting implications across AR and VR. Facebook DensePose, for instance, can generate a 3D surface that can be applied in real-time to footage of human bodies in motion. You could, for example, overlay a completely different outfit onto a real-world character in an AR game. That, Facebook says, should be released as an open-source library in a matter of weeks.
House3D, similarly, will be released as a virtual environment in which robotic systems could be more rapidly trained to understand their environments. A new StarCraft bot has been developed to operate successfully in the popular video game; Facebook says it plans to release the rule set it developed for that, which could end up making for more engaging NPCs in future.
All the same, Facebook isn’t immune to the fears about where artificial intelligence might develop. “As we work to shape the future of AI with our research and our open development tools,” the company’s Jerome Pesenti writes, “it’s important to apply questions of ethics, fairness, and trust to every effort in this field.” That’ll include making sure that a diverse workforce is on hand to identify any systemic or institutional bias, in addition to new research and privacy reviews. A Fairness Flow tool has been developed to measure how algorithms interact with specific groups of people.

At today’s F8 developer conference from Facebook, the company is focusing on privacy along with announcing some upcoming products like FaceTime competitors, a Tinder clone, and more.
In a post on the platform today, Mark Zuckerberg noted:
You’ll be able to see information about the apps and websites you’ve interacted with, and you’ll be able to clear this information from your account. You’ll even be able to turn off having this information stored with your account.
He notes that this is similar to clearing your cookies, cache and history, meaning that clearing your Facebook history will also force the platform to re-learn everything about you and your preferences.
To be clear, when you clear your cookies in your browser, it can make parts of your experience worse. You may have to sign back in to every website, and you may have to reconfigure things. The same will be true here. Your Facebook won’t be as good while it relearns your preferences.
However, Zuckerberg says that this is the right move as it allows users to remove any data they don’t want from Facebook. He cautions that this is their first move and that he will work hard in the future to perfect its stance on privacy.
This new option will let users toggle history on a per-app basis.
He also shared that in his interactions with Congress, he was not clear enough in his answers when asked about user privacy and data. While nothing is announced, he wants to discuss this further in the future.
Facebook says they didn’t do enough to protect the 2024 US elections. It says that it won’t “let this ever happen again.” The company is now requiring users to be verified via a government ID if they’re running a large political Facebook page or group.
The company went on to discuss the Cambridge Analytica scandal. Back in 2014, Facebook had already begun restricting data to developers in a way that it thought would resolve many privacy issues. However, after that didn’t work out, the company wants to roll out changes that will prevent data login mining.
Facebook will also be endlessly looking for bad apps by way of independent auditors. In the Facebook app, third-party app settings will now sit on top, giving users a much easier way to both see and access what apps have access to. Zuckerberg strongly believes that the new GDPR laws are great and is asking everyone to review privacy controls not only on the Facebook platform, but elsewhere as well.
He also noted, “Security isn’t an issue we can solve forever,” and that the teams at Facebook are working day in and day out to resolve security breaches and exploits as quick as possible.
Beyond privacy, Zuckerberg announced a few new features being added to Facebook’s platform.
The first of which will be Watch party. This new feature will allow you to watch videos and chat with your friends. Zuckerberg’s example was using the feature to watch your friend testify in front of Congress. This is taking Facebook’s existing live streaming feature to the next level.
The company is also launching Meaningful Communities, making it much easier to both join and manage communities on Facebook. There will now be a new groups tab to make groups more central to the overall experience. You’ll now be able to join groups outside of the platform, by way of a new “Join Group” button.
Facebook says that 1 in 3 married couples in the United States now meet on the platform. To help aid this, Facebook is launching Meaningful Relationships, a new set of features coming soon surrounding dating. The focus will be on long-term relationships, and Facebook will not recommend anyone who is on your friends list, that way you have a clean start. This will no doubt create some competition with Tinder.
Zuckerberg then moved on to Instagram, which is now getting a new redesigned explore tab, focusing on topic channels. Along with this, Instagram will now support both video chat and group video chat, with the ability to continue browsing the app while on the call. Last year, Facebook announced AR Camera Effects for Facebook, now the company is adding support for this feature in Instagram as well.
The company then took a minute to talk about WhatsApp. It says that users are now making 2 billion minutes worth of calls, and to help make this experience better, WhatsApp will now be getting the group video calling feature as well.
Moving right along, the company went ahead and talked about Facebook Messenger. The messaging platform will be getting a major redesign, focusing the app on the chat aspect. And just like Instagram and WhatsApp, it will now be getting AR Camera Effects Platform as well.
In terms of its Business chat, Facebook says that 8 billion business messages have been sent through the messaging platform since it launched.
And finally, the company talked about VR. Zuckerberg says that VR will be our main way of communication in the long-term, noting that “VR and AR will take this to a completely different level.” To help aid Facebook’s VR efforts, it announced that Oculus Go will be shipping today, starting at $199. Zuckerberg believes Oculus Go is the best and easiest way to experience VR.

While the likes of Myspace and MSN Messenger were already around in 2004, the invention of Facebook that year changed the social media landscape forever. As of 2023, Mark Zuckerberg’s social network was the largest in the world, with nearly three billion users and about half that number using it every day. But many people have become disillusioned with the app and may wonder what other options are out there. We’ve dug into what Facebook does right, what it doesn’t do so well, and what the best Facebook alternatives are.
Facebook groups are a useful way to connect with like-minded individuals.
Multimedia sharing is another big strength of Facebook. Unlike apps like Snapchat, photos and videos you upload to social media stay there forever. This allows you to document your life if you so choose, adding photos of every birthday and vacation to impress your friends. Those who have been on Facebook for many years could find that the photos and videos on the site date back further than their offline digital collection.
While it can quickly become an echo chamber, Facebook also offers a personalized news feed that presents content based on user preferences, interests, and connections. This feature allows users to discover relevant articles, videos, and updates from their network and other sources, facilitating engagement and interaction. This is a handy way to find out what’s going on among your friends, the people in your area, or around the globe at large. The best Facebook alternatives
If the good and bad points about Facebook have made you feel like trying an alternative, we’ll run you through some of your options here. We’ve highlighted in the headline what each site is particularly strong on. That’s not to say it’s necessarily the best option for those aspects, nor that the others don’t offer them, but they give you an indication of which might best suit you.
TikTok: Videos and creativity
Joe Hindy / Android Authority
TikTok is centered around short-form videos. It allows users to create and share entertaining and creative content set to music, audio clips, or other sounds. TikTok has gained immense popularity, particularly among younger users, for its vibrant and engaging community of creators and its highly personalized recommendation system. It caters to those interested in various forms of creative expression, such as dance, comedy, lip-syncing, beauty, fashion, cooking, and more. TikTok also provides a platform for aspiring influencers and content creators to gain exposure and build a following.
TikTok’s algorithm analyzes user preferences, engagement patterns, and video interactions to deliver a highly personalized “For You” feed. This makes it easier for users to discover new content and creators that align with their interests. The platform’s emphasis on shareability and the potential for videos to go viral can provide rapid exposure for talented creators. But the algorithm can make it quite addictive, and it isn’t ideal for users seeking in-depth or long-form content, as the format prioritizes quick and engaging snippets.
Snapchat: Private messaging
Edgar Cervantes / Android Authority
Snapchat is a multimedia messaging app that strongly emphasizes ephemeral and interactive content. It allows users to send photos, videos, messages, and other forms of media that disappear after being viewed, typically within a short time. While it has more of a reputation as a messaging app than a social media platform, Snapchat has added a Discover news feed similar to Instagram’s Explore tab or TikTok’s For You page.
Snapchat primarily appeals to younger users, especially teenagers and young adults, who enjoy sharing casual and spontaneous moments with their friends. It is also popular among individuals who value privacy and want to share content that disappears without leaving a permanent trace. Snapchat also offers a range of interactive features like filters, lenses, stickers, and augmented reality experiences, which engage users in playful and creative ways.
There are two points to note about the disappearing message niche of Snapchat. First, it might be offputting as a Facebook alternative because you’re not building a library of content that you can then relive in future months and years. On the flip side, the appeal of disappearing messages isn’t guaranteed. The recipient can screenshot your message before it vanishes, and while you’ll be notified of this, you can’t stop it from happening.
Twitter: News and public discussion
Edgar Cervantes / Android Authority
Elon Musk’s site is a microblogging platform that enables users to share and discover short messages called tweets. It is designed for real-time information, public conversations, and connecting with a wide range of individuals. Twitter allows users to follow accounts of their interest and engage in discussions through likes, retweets, replies, and hashtags. If something is going on in the world, you’ll find out about it first on Twitter.
The social media site attracts a diverse user base, ranging from individuals seeking news and updates to those who enjoy sharing their thoughts and opinions. It is especially popular among journalists, politicians, activists, and public figures who use the platform to share breaking news and engage with their followers. Twitter is best suited for users who prefer concise and direct communication and value staying informed and connected to current events.
LinkedIn: Business and networking
Edgar Cervantes / Android Authority
LinkedIn is a professional networking platform that focuses on career development, business connections, and industry-specific discussions. It provides users with the opportunity to create professional profiles, connect with colleagues, peers, and industry professionals, and access job opportunities. While very different to Facebook, if you’re a professional, a job seeker, a recruiter, or a business looking to network, it’s an excellent site for putting yourself out there and engaging with others.
LinkedIn’s primary focus on professional networking and career-related content means that it may not offer the same level of personal or casual interactions as other social media sites. Users looking for a more informal Facebook alternative may find other platforms better suited for their needs.
That covers six of the best Facebook alternatives, and there should be at least one platform there that piques your interest. There are many more we could have included, from Masterdon and Bluesky, which are vying for Twitter users, to Telegram and Signal, which are more along the messaging lines. Our Instagram alternatives post has a more niche rundown if you want to keep reading.
Google doesn’t really have a direct Facebook alternative. It did try and launch Google Plus as a social media platform, but it never got much popularity and was shut down in 2023. Google does own YouTube, though, and Google Chrome is one browser on which you can access all of the above sites.
MeWe is a social media platform that acts as a Facebook alternative, with a bigger focus on privacy and with a generally more socially conservative user base. It is yet to come close to the popularity of Zuck’s site, but it is one of the most popular free apps on the App Store.
Covid-19 brought a new spotlight to telehealth. The virus caused fears and restrictions that led to a drastic reduction in the number of people receiving care. Remote healthcare services were forced to take over.
Remote healthcare isn’t going away, even though the worst days of the pandemic may be over.
Similar to remote work, being able to offer safe and accessible healthcare without having to be present will continue to be an integral part of the healthcare industry moving forward.
HealthTap is one company that continues to champion telehealth, pandemic or otherwise. HealthTap offers a tech-forward, remote-friendly healthcare service. It aims to continue offering affordable and better healthcare through the expanding remote healthcare channel. How HealthTap Puts Healthcare in The Hands of Consumers
HealthTap was founded in 2010 and has been working towards this goal for more than a decade.
Its tech-based solutions, which are industry leaders in their field, are continuously pushing the company towards its goal of making primary care available to everyone in America — regardless of whether they have insurance.
This innovative brand of remote healthcare is changing the status quo in many ways and leading the way to a more healthy, telehealth-friendly future.
Best CRM software for 2023A Healthcare Reset: Same Healthcare — Different Approach
HealthTap’s unique approach to solving the problem is what sets it apart from other healthcare options.
Similar companies aim to improve the healthcare system. The solution for the HealthTap team was to start from a consumer-centric perspective and back up.
With this in mind, founders asked key questions.
What are consumers looking for?
What are patients looking to find?
Do they not have access to the right services? The current system is full of inefficiencies and costs that have been discovered throughout the process. Patients seek simple and straight answers to their most difficult health problems. Inefficiencies are often discovered.
Too often, insurance companies influence the selection of doctors, procedures, and medications. Patients are often restricted by geographical limitations, which can make it difficult to find the right doctor for them.
No matter what the circumstance, third-party entities that have other goals or objectives should not make such personal, important decisions.
Comprehensive Remote Healthcare: HealthTap’s End to End Experience
HealthTap’s focus on virtual primary healthcare is one of its strengths.
The company worked hard to create a network that treats each patient as a human being and not as a collection of symptoms.
Each appointment can be made by the same doctor. This helps them build trust over time.
HealthTap offers this personal touch and a strong set of tech tools to help you keep your costs down and make it easy for you to access services around the clock.
The AI asks members questions and provides a digital interview. HealthTap’s system uses this to triage each patient. It classifies their issues and assigns a level of urgency. For example, a sore thumb is not as urgent as a sore knee.
The company then uses this information to schedule a virtual consultation with a physician. You can use a variety of remote healthcare communication channels to accomplish this. Patients can contact providers via text, audio, or a combination of audio and video. Video is recommended, however, for maximum effectiveness.
Virtual communication allows patients and doctors to communicate with each other, allowing them to discuss their symptoms. As the patient moves from one end of the telehealth experience to the next, doctors can also provide treatment plans.Accessibility: Anytime, Anywhere Treatment
HealthTap’s remote health services are different than traditional healthcare in that they can be accessed at any hour of the day.
It’s not just convenient to have 24/7 care. It’s essential.
No matter what time structure man has created, illness can occur. Traditional healthcare services are available from 9-5 Monday through Friday. This is unfortunately true during the busiest hours of any working business.
This makes it difficult for individuals to make a choice between their health and their school and work responsibilities. They must choose from overloaded, expensive after-hours urgent care centers or emergency rooms if they are unable to do so.
HealthTap offers consumers an unprecedented level of control, allowing them to access healthcare solutions according to their schedule.Low Costs: Efficiency is the key to affordability
Healthcare is costly. It’s not a secret. This problem has been increasing for many years. The recent pandemic only made matters worse. In fact, healthcare costs increased by 10% in 2023, the year that began the crisis.
HealthTap’s telehealth service is a quality alternative to HealthTap, but it’s still expensive.
HealthTap’s tech-focused format makes quality alternatives possible. The AI and other tech elements of HealthTap automate many manual and routine healthcare-related tasks. Both members and doctors benefit from this, as it saves time and reduces the amount of rigmarole.
The Healthcare Bells and Whistles
This innovative approach to healthcare does not just eliminate many of the costs and inconveniences associated with traditional healthcare. Digitally-driven Telehealth has opened up new avenues for innovation.
HealthTap’s software, for example, has been streamlined to personalize the presentation and organization of personal data. All information, including notes from virtual doctor consultations and prescribed treatment plans, is securely stored in one location.
This information can be accessed from any digital device, at any hour of the day or night, due to its digital nature.
Privacy Protection for Sensitive Digital Data
HealthTap can overcome this concern. HealthTap has invested more than a decade in its network.
The development team didn’t rush to set up a telehealth infrastructure. This is often the case with many other providers who switched to this format during the pandemic.
HealthTap was already well-established before the crisis. Their tech tools are therefore already reliable and efficient. This allows R&D to concentrate on other priorities such as expanding the company’s network of board-certified healthcare professionals.
Board-certified healthcare professionals are available to answer any call. Patients can also reach a professional from anywhere within the HealthTap network.
Telehealth is here to stay. It can be daunting to choose the right remote healthcare provider. Consumers should look into options such as HealthTap which provides targeted tech tools and high-quality network doctors and safe, affordable, and accessible healthcare solutions.
