Usually, the Back button in a browser fails to function correctly due to reasons such as redirecting links and conflicting browser extensions. But rarely, you could be dealing with something as serious as a malicious add-on or browser hijacker.

Switch Tabs or Windows

In that case, you can’t use the Back button. The only way to go back to the previous page is to switch tabs or windows.

2. Use the in-app volume controls

Tip: Say music is playing in an app (Spotify) that doesn’t have volume controls. Open the iOS Music or Podcasts apps and go to its Now Playing screen. Don’t play anything here. Just drag their volume slider and it will change the volume for whatever is playing in the other app (Spotify in this case).

3. Use the Lock Screen volume slider

When media is playing, you’ll see it on the Lock Screen. Drag the volume slider to set it at the desired level.

4. Ask Siri

Invoke Siri on your iPhone and ask it something like “Change volume to 75%” or “Increase/Decrease the volume.” You can also ask Siri to take a screenshot.

5. Use your Apple Watch to change iPhone volume

When a song is playing on your iPhone, do the following:

Wake your connected Apple Watch and tap the tiny Now Playing button from the top of the watch face. You can also find it in the app bubble.

You’ll see a tiny iPhone icon and the word “iPhone” next to it at the top right. This signifies the music is playing from your iPhone. If it says “Watch,” that means songs synced to Apple Watch or streamed from it are playing. Rotate the Digital Crown to increase or decrease the iPhone volume.

You can press the volume up and down buttons on the Apple EarPods remote or supported third-party wired earphones. Rotate the Digital Crown to change the volume on AirPods Max. Several third-party wireless headphones also have on-device volume controls.

7. Use AssistiveTouch to add virtual volume and screenshot buttons

AssistiveTouch is an accessibility feature that adds a virtual floating button on your iPhone screen. You can single tap, double-tap, and long-press this button to perform various tasks.

Here’s how to change volume and take screenshots even if iPhone volume buttons are not working:

Open Settings and tap Accessibility.

Tap Touch.

Tap AssistiveTouch.

Enable the toggle for AssistiveTouch. You’ll see a button appear on your screen.

Under Custom Actions, you should see Open Menu next to Single-Tap. If not, select Single-Tap, Double-Tap, or Long Press and set it to Open Menu.

Note: Under Custom Actions, you can tap Single-Tap, Double-Tap, or Long Press and set them to Volume Down or Volume Up. However, this choice may not be the best for most. This time, it’s Axis, Yahoo’s new web browser (that’s not apparently an actual web browser, but more about that in a minute…)

Yesterday afternoon I saw a tweet from Glenn Gabe that was a pretty bold claim

That link took me to a chúng tôi article detailing an email from Yahoo touting the new offering as “a new browser that redefines what it means to search and browse- enabling a seamless search experience on your iPhone, iPad, and even your desktop. ”

Wait a minute… Is this a web browser, or a skin for Yahoo search? I’m instantly confused…

He goes on to say it “completey redefines what it means to explore the web…”

When Is A Browser Not Always A Browser?

See, apparently, it’s really combining a web browser AND a search engine!  That could very well be innovative.  Now he’s got my attention!

You also get the obligatory “Axis Home Page” where you can customize your favorite web finds.  I assume this is where the majority of Yahoo’s not-yet-available ad revenue is going to come in.  Kind of like how Skype tried to force us Skype users to have to use their annoying and unbelievably useless “home” page until thousands of us protested over months of time and got them to make that an opt-in feature.

Though to give them credit, that custom home page could be something millions of main-stream sheep find perfectly valuable. Especially since it gives you the same home page across all your devices.

Here’s where the message completely goes of the rails though…

Browser? Plug-in? App?  WTF?

At 1:25 into the demo, Scott then states

On your computer, Axis is a plug-in that easily works with your favorite browser…

Wait. What?

Yeah – apparently it’s NOT a full-blown browser, but really just an app or plug-in.  Well technically it IS a browser when it’s an app, and skins a different UX as a layer ABOVE your actual web browser of choice when you’re using it on your computer. So it is sometimes.  But not always.

In computer mode, as a plug-in, it doesn’t really replace your browser.  Instead, it sites at the bottom of your screen, overlaying the bottom of your browser, and lets you do all your searching and thumbnail scrolling down there.

You know. Because why would a product touted as a BROWSER, actually be, you know, a browser “sort of”?

Wow. okay.  I think.

Quick Access To Previous Search Results

So what it’s doing is keeping your search results live and quickly accessible simply by rolling your mouse down to the bottom of the screen to have it pop up.  Instead of having to you know, switch tabs or windows.  Which is kind of convenient.

After that confusion, Scott once again goes on to clearly state:

So that’s Axis – a new browser from Yahoo, that completely redefines what it means to search and browse the web.

So uh, somebody forgot to tell their site manager to get the legalese from the Yahoo legal team before sending out that email. Or maybe by the time you read this article, they’ll have filled that little minor detail of a page in with something that is completely typically long and legalistic, that nobody will really bother to read except those of us legal loop-hole nerds who like to look for flaws in legal TOS docs purely for the sake of ranting about it on Twitter…

Anyhow, I got the Firefox plug-in.  Once installed, my initial “is it a browser, is it a plug-in” confusion was confirmed, though some clarity came as well.

Clearly you can see in my screen-shot that Axis resides at the bottom of the screen (within the Firefox frame) and doesn’t replace Firefox’s native URL or search boxes up top.

Feeding The Popularity Wave

So Yahoo’s taken the old Google Trends, melded it with Twitter Trends model and sticks those trends in your face whether you care to see them or not, as many news sites are doing these days, which clearly caters to the main-stream sheep…

As soon as you start typing in a search, Axis instantly gives you suggestions in place of where the trends list was, and off to the right, sure enough, you instantly start seeing thumbnail previews.

When I experimented with various search phrases, I got odd results.  Maybe a bug, maybe a flaw, or maybe just, well, who knows at this very early stage…

For example, when I tried to search for “SEO is dead”, as I typed “SEO”, I got suggestions and thumbnails almost instantly.  Then when I typed “SEO is”, I almost instantly got a bunch of “SEO is dead” thumbnails.  But when I typed out the full “SEO is dead”, all I got was a blank suggestion box and no thumbnails.  Everything disappeared.

Once I entered an extra blank space after “dead”, the suggest and thumbnails came back fortunately.  Because otherwise I would have been very annoyed, not just “hey it’s a bug give them a break” annoyed.

And that’s when I noticed, as I was typing this article, that the Axis “browser” remains visible even when you switch Firefox windows…

So that answers my question about multiple tabs and windows. I think.

Saving Bookmarks in Axis

I have to assume this is because Yahoo’s sending all this up into the cloud somewhere, because I’m not about to reverse engineer this thing or go hacking into my computer’s folders to figure it out.  Because I may be a TOS reading nerd (for Twitter rant sake) but I’m no longer THAT much of a geek!

Yahoo Axis – The Chrome Killer – Not – Maybe

So is Yahoo’s latest offering really going to be a Chrome killer?

Clearly not as far as desktop browsers go. Because it’s NOT a stand-alone browser in desktop mode.  The only chance Axis has of being a Chrome killer, EVER, in the future, is through the app.

Except for now, it’s not even available for Android devices.  Duh. Minor detail, huh? (no fault of Yahoo’s on that – purely a very poorly thought-out article title from the good people at…)

And if it ever WILL be a Chrome killer, if Yahoo DOES make an Android App version of Axis, they’re going to have to pour a whole lot of money into marketing this sucker to get enough wide-spread adoption going. And only if the app is truly self-contained.

Since I don’t have my iPad with me, I’m not able, at the time I’m writing this article, to test the iPad app, but I suspect it really is a stand-alone app and won’t (hopefully) require you to first launch your device’s native browser. Because that would just be too funny for me to deal with and not rant for an hour as a result…

Deactivation Annoyance

When I was done with my testing, I went to figure how to turn off the plug-in.  There’s no “settings’ link anywhere on that Axis bar.  So I had to go to my Firefox add-ons settings and go to the plug-ins section.

So I deactivated it.  And nothing. The bar was still there.  I had to manually close ALL of my Firefox windows and relaunch manually to get that sucker to disappear. Come on already with the rush to market failing to work out really common-sense bugs.  Well fine, common sense to a geek.  Unless, of course, they intend that as a “feature” to try and get more sheep to just keep the bar there rather than have to figure out how to deactivate it…

Final Thoughts

I actually like the instant view thumbnails you get.  Then again, that’s TOTALLY useless for any search that requires some sort of description to help you decide whether the thumbnail you’re viewing really is a site you want to visit. And that’s a big deal.  A really big deal given how mixed the quality of search results are these days.

Then there’s the (potentially early-stage) bug with the favorites box not loading consistently for me.  (for the record, I tried several more times to launch that box and it failed to load every time.)

And yes, they’re going to have to actually work on the bugs, and maybe take some UX feedback in case some of those “bugs” were actually just “we never thought of that” issues.

Bottom line?  Time will tell.  I just don’t see it being such a major game changer that if Apple or Google feel threatened that their mobile browsers are going to be supplanted (a really big deal given that at this point, on mobile devices, Apple and Google TOTALLY own web browsing, and already Microsoft and Firefox are in deep trouble because of that), that they couldn’t themselves come out with their own solutions.

Iphone Back Tap Not Working? Try 6 Solutions To Fix It!

Back Tap in iOS 14 opens a new possibility to perform several tasks by tapping twice or thrice on your iPhone’s back. 1. Can not see the Back Tap option? Check iPhone compatibility

Back Tap is only available on iPhone 8 and later. This means, even after you have updated your iPhone 6s, 6s plus, 7, and 7 plus to iOS 14, you will not see the option for Back Tap under the Settings app → Accessibility → Touch.

But if you have a compatible iPhone and still can not use Back Tap, here are the fixes.

2. Restart the iPhone

It is usual for iPhone (or any device) to encounter some unexpected problems and glitches if you haven’t restarted it in a long time.

So, the first solution is to turn off the iPhone by using the physical buttons. You may also do the same from the Settings app → General → Shut Down. After a minute, use the right side button to switch it on (or plug it into charging).

Note: If a simple restart does not work, you may try force restarting.

3. Remove the case

Back Tap works with most iPhone cases, even unofficial and cheap ones. But if you happen to use a significantly thick, rugged case, it might not work. To check, remove the case you are currently using and see if Back Tap works or not. If your current iPhone case is the trouble maker, consider buying one of the slim cases.

4. Check Back Tap settings

By default Back Tap is off, which means no action is assigned to double and triple taps. Thus, we must take a minute to ensure things are correct here.

Secondly, if some action is already assigned, try choosing a different option. For example, if you have added the Shake function to Back Tap, it will not always work if there is no need for the shake feature. The same goes for certain Shortcuts. Thus, try changing the Double Tap and Triple Tap options. If these new ones work, things are perfect. The error was just an action-specific problem. Nothing much to worry about!

Here is how to switch on or change Back Tap settings:

Open the iPhone Settings app and tap Accessibility.

Tap Touch.

From the bottom, tap Back Tap.

Tap Double Tap or Triple Tap.

Tap an action to set it. (For example, Screenshot in the image below)

Now, double-tap or triple-tap on your iPhone’s back, and the newly set action should trigger.

If an update spoils a feature, Apple, in the subsequent iteration, most likely addresses it. Thus, it is vital to update your iPhone to the latest version. You can do this easily from the Settings app → General → Software Update.

6. Reset All Settings

Open the Settings app and tap General.

Tap Reset.

Tap Reset All Settings.

Enter and confirm your device passcode.

After reset, set up Back Tap again, and it should work flawlessly.

Fix: Chromecast Not Showing Up Or Not Working

There are a lot of reasons you may not be able to cast something to your Chromecast, either from your computer or your mobile device.

A few of the most common reasons for this include:

Your Chromecast is not connected to the same WiFi network as the device you’re casting from.

The power cable on your Chromecast isn’t working.

The Chromecast isn’t plugged into the TV HDMI port properly.

In this article, you’ll learn how to fix all of these issues, from the most common to the least likely.

1. Restart Your Chromecast

As with most troubleshooting, restarting devices should always be the first thing you try. If you leave your Chromecast turned on all day, there are times when it can lose its network or internet connection. This lost connection won’t always recover automatically.

To do this, launch your Google Home app. Find the Chromecast device and tap it.

On the Chromecast device screen, tap the gear Settings icon at the upper right. On the Settings window, tap the three vertical dots at the upper right.

This will open a small menu. Select Reboot from the top of the list. Give your Chromecast device a minute or two to fully reboot and reconnect to your network and the internet.

If you’re trying to cast from a browser-based streaming service, you could always try restarting your browser first. Or if you’re using an app like Hulu or Netflix on your Android or iOS device, killing the app and relaunching it might also fix the problem.

If neither of these work, then a full restart is the next step. On Windows, just select the Start menu, select Power, and then select Restart.

Likewise, go through the process to restart your Mac, or restart your iOS or Android Device.

Relaunch your browser or app and try casting to your Chromecast again.

3. Verify Your Wi-Fi Network

There are two things you should always check if the Chromecast icon isn’t showing up or otherwise not working. One is to confirm that your Chromecast and the device you’re casting from are both connected to the same Wi-Fi network.

The first thing to check is which Wi-Fi network your computer or mobile device is connected to. On Windows 10, for example, you can just select the network icon at the right corner of the taskbar.

You’ll see the Connected status under the name of the network you’re connected to. Make note of the network name. On your Mac, Android, or iOS device, just check the network settings in the same way to check the network name you’re connected to.

Once you have that, launch the Google Home app on your mobile device. Scroll down to the Chromecast device that you want to check and tap it.

On the Chromecast screen, tap the gear icon at the upper right to view its settings. Look down the list until you see Wi-Fi. The name of the Wi-Fi network your Chromecast is connected to will be displayed there. 

If it doesn’t match the Wi-Fi network your computer or mobile device is connected to, you’ll need to tap Forget and then use Google Home to reconnect your Chromecast to the correct Wi-Fi network. 

4. Troubleshoot Your Internet Connection

Even if both devices are on the same Wi-Fi network, casting to a Chromecast device without an internet connection won’t work. How do you check if your Chromecast has an internet connection?

Basically, there are two steps. First, confirm the Chromecast device is connected to the Wi-Fi network. If you’ve completed the section above, then you’ve already confirmed this. Next, you need to make sure your Wi-Fi network is connected to the internet.

One of the quickest things to try that usually works to fix your internet connection is to reset your router.

5. Make Sure Chromecast Is Using 2.4 GHz Band

Newer Chromecast devices are compatible with both the 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz Wi-Fi bands put out by your home Wi-Fi router.

However, to use 5 GHz, you need a dual-band router and a newer Chromecast device. The 5 GHz band is also a weaker signal so more susceptible to interference from appliances like microwave ovens.

To determine if your Chromecast issues are caused by a weaker 5 GHz signal, try adjusting your Chromecast settings to use the 2.4 GHz band instead.

Note: If you’re using an older Chromecast, it isn’t capable of using 5 GHz and will default to 2.4 GHz anyway, so you won’t have to try this step. 

There are two ways you can change Chromecast to use 2.4 GHz. Neither are simple.

Reset your Chromecast by pressing and holding the small round reset button on the side for about 25 to 30 seconds. Set up Chromecast again by adding it as a new device in the Google Home app. When asked during the setup wizard, select the 2.4 GHz band instead of 5 GHz.  

Log into your router as an administrator. Find the MAC Address Filtering section in your router settings. Choose the 5GHz band and block your Chromecast from connecting to it. Note: Not all routers have the option to do this.

6. Factory Reset Your Chromecast.

If you’ve tried everything else and your Chromecast still isn’t showing up or otherwise not working, it may be time to do a full factory reset on your Chromecast.

A factory reset will clear all settings and configurations and set the Chromecast back to the state it was in when you first bought it. This should hopefully clear any errors or any other issues that may be causing the Chromecast to fail.

Doing a full reset is the same process as doing a reboot. Just launch the Google Home app on your mobile device, select the Chromecast device, and choose the gear icon at the upper right.

On the settings screen, select the three vertical dots at the upper right. This time, instead of choosing Reboot, select Factory reset.

Your Chromecast will restart again, but this time when it comes back up it will no longer connect to your Wi-Fi network or the internet.
