Google Losing Market Share in China
Two research reports (Beijing, Shanghai and Guangzhou internet users were interviewed) have been released about the Search Engines Market in China and both come to the same conclusion. The only part they differ on is the percentage of loss.
The China Internet Marketing Network Information Center (CNNIC) puts Google’s overall loss at 8%, ending at 25.3% while Baidu’s market share increases to 62.1%
China IntelliConsulting (CIC), a marketing research start-up whose founder was involved with previous CNNIC surveys, sees Google slide to 20.6%. A loss of 12.3% compared to last year. Baidu wins in this survey 13% and ends up at 65.4%. CIC though, released only the Beijing data for all relevant search engines
Baidu wins Shanghai Over
In previous surveys Baidu has a stronger following in Beijing compared to Shanghai. China Tech Stories explains this:
“Beijing has more students, Shanghai has more businessmen; Beijing users are more proud of being Chinese, Shanghai users like to make more money [which] may contribute to their choices of search engines.”
Baidu’s headquarters are in Beijing and most of its employees are from the Beijing universities
CIC however also released the market share per city for Baidu and their Shanghai foothold is growing to 58% [CNNIC even 58.9%], compared to 43.9% last year. Even businessmen are leaving.
The CNNIC sample for this survey was almost 4 times bigger than the CIC survey, 4500 to 1250. For that reason the former survey is likely more reliable. The result is either way that Google lost a considerable share.
Why such a huge drop in just one year?
There can be several reasons for this. For one, Google launched a chinafied (more censor friendly) version, chúng tôi in April 2006 and called it Guge, meaning Harvest Song.
Half a year after the launch 72.6% (62.8% of the users whose first choice is Google) of the interviewed users still aren’t able to tell you the Chinese name of Google, according to CNNIC. This indicates that most Google users still use the Chinese version of chúng tôi which wouldn’t be a surprise as Serge Brin admitted in June 2006 that almost all users use the non-censored version.
The real Google is in general slower in China and entering the wrong [read blocked words] keywords, results in a frozen browser. Probably to counter even more criticism they still don’t redirect users of the Chinese chúng tôi version automatically to chúng tôi Marketing wise re-directing would make more sense at this stage or maybe just re-branding themselves as Google in China, instead of Guge, would already help.
There may be other reasons as well that effect the performance of Google.

High-end users still favor Google
There is one field were Google is still in the lead, at least according to the CNNIC survey. High-end users are defined as non-student users who are at least 25, have a college degrees and earn a monthly salary higher than 3000 Renminbi ($377 US).
This is the group that probably has the finance to actually buy something on the web. I say “probably” as 3000 Renminbi won’t take you that far in a city like Shanghai. Google’s market share in this bracket has shrunk though since 2005.

Recent data compiled by comScore, a digital business analytics firm, shows continued strength for Google in the search engine field. The leader in search engines, Google remains the top choice among searches in the United States and is still the top search engine in the world. However, Google has not been able to establish that same position of strength in China, the world’s most populous nation with a fast growing consumer base.
Now the news is getting worse for Google behind the wall as a new competitor is emerging in the search engine business in China. Alibaba, an Internet company based in China, is launching a new search engine titled Aliyun in an effort to not only challenge the most popular search engine in China (Baidu) but Google as well.
Aliyun, which will be housed within the AliCloud subsidiary of Alibaba Group, will provide Web surfers with many of the same features that other search engines offer. The page will feature Internet, news, image, and map searches. The map service available on Aliyun will be powered by AutoNavi, a Chinese digital mapping and navigation firm.
While the main goal of any company launching a search engine is to challenge the leader, Baidu in this case, Alibaba appears to be out to stick it to Google. For starters, it seems to be no small coincidence to industry analysts that Aliyun’s search engine will have more in common visually with Google than other competitors in the Chinese marketplace.
Beyond a similar look to its search engine, Aliyun’s entrance into the market may be another shot across the bow in the battle between Google and Alibaba in China. Yes, these two competitors in the tech industry have a history with one another in the country, and it is not one that would be described as friendly.
Last year Alibaba created the Aliyun mobile OS for use on smartphones in China and had convinced Acer to develop a handset running the operating system. However, Google quickly stepped in to rain on Alibaba’s parade by forcing Acer to back out of the project. Google’s reasoning was that the Aliyun mobile OS, which uses Android technology, was not a strong and compatible Android OS. As Acer is a member of the Open Handset Alliance, it was not allowed to sign onto the project and pulled out.
In an explanation at the time, Google pointed out that:
“Compatibility is at the heart of the Android ecosystem and ensures a consistent experience for developers, manufacturers, and consumers.
Non-compatible versions of Android, like Aliyun, weaken the ecosystem. All members of the Open Handset Alliance have committed to building one Android platform and to not ship non-compatible Android devices.
This does not however, keep OHA members from participating in competing ecosystems.”
To summarize, Google doesn’t care if Acer develops handsets for use with Windows Phone 8, Apple iOS, or Blackberry OS. On the other hand, they are not allowed to create a handset that operates on an Android OS that is deemed to be inferior.
It seems obvious that there is no “fuzzy feeling” between these two companies, but Alibaba’s move with the Aliyun search engine could work out better than the Aliyun mobile OS did in China. Google’s position in China is admittedly weak, and data from 2012 shows that Google’s positioning in fourth place is not exactly concrete.
While competitors that are already ahead of Google in China, namely Qihoo 360, experienced growth in 2012, Google’s position weakened. Qihoo 360 saw a 2 percent jump in page visits and unique visits during the final quarter of 2012 alone, going from 7.3 percent and 7.4 percent respectively to 9.6 percent and 9.8 percent. By contrast, the final quarter of 2012 saw Google’s share of the market dip from 5.1 percent and 5.2 percent respectively to 4.7 percent and 4.5 percent.
There is no denying that ever since the pandemic, the video calling life has become the norm to a really great extent. In fact, we have become desensitized to just how invasive the whole activity really is. Consent works differently when one considers an in-person meeting versus when one needs to give access to one’s screen for a video call.
Of course, as a means to assuage this invasion, video-calling apps like Zoom and Meet have permission processes set in place so that there are no violations. So there is no doubt that as a host, it is important to have an understanding of how permission works on Google Meet.
How to grant permission to share screen in Google Meet
The additional steps that require a host to grant permission do not occur in the case of a Google Meet presentation.
As a host, if you want to ensure that a protocol to give/seek permission is set, then it is best that you set it verbally or via the chat feature. You can even consider using the hand raise feature as a medium that can be used to grant permission if you’re using a Google Workspace account.
What to do if you are unable to present as a host?
If you are unable to present as a host, then there is very likely a permission issue with either your browser or the device that you’re using. These issues can be fixed by changing/editing the settings for the source and you’ll be good to present again.
What to do when you’re unable to share screen after permission has been granted?
Whether you are a host or a participant in a Google Meet, once the meeting has begun and everyone has been admitted to the meeting, the problem of consent should ideally not occur. but if it does, then the problem lies on your end whether you are a host or a participant, and must be fixed accordingly. Here are the fixes that you need to try when screen sharing is restricted even after all permissions are in place from the host.
Check the browser
Generally, the browser is not the root cause of these sorts of issues, however, if they are, then it’s possible that this is happening because you don’t have the latest updated version of the browser or your browser requires permissions that haven’t been given.
The most likely reason that you’re facing an issue on Google Chrome is that it hasn’t been updated. Here’s how to update the browser.
Once your Chrome browser is updated check whether you’re able to present, the issue will be resolved by now.
MacBook users face issues when it comes to Mozilla Firefox and the ideal thing to do is give permission to share the screen from within the browser itself. Here’s how:
Launch a meeting on Google Meet and join the meeting.
Locate the Share the Screen option and checkmark the Use Default option. If this checkmark has already been checked, then uncheck it and recheck it again.
In the case of Microsoft Edge as well, the most likely reason you are unable to share your screen is that the browser requires an update. Here’s what you need to do.
The browser should launch normally after this and you will be able to share your screen comfortably.
Check the system settings
On a Mac
Mac users are the ones who are mostly facing an issue with Mozilla Firefox. In such a scenario, make sure that your Macbook has allowed the browser to present. Here’s how you must go about it.
In System Preferences, select the Security and Privacy option.
Check the box adjacent to the browser application that you want to enable for screen-sharing on. After doing this, quit the browser and launch it again.
Like on a desktop, you can also share a screen on Google Meet from your phone. While there are no added permissions to grant inside the Settings app on either iOS or Android, you will be prompted for access to your screen immediately after you tap on “Share screen”. This prompt will look like this on Android while iOS users get a similar popup asking users to start broadcasting their screen.
If you’re unable to share your screen from your phone, then make sure you update the Meet app from the Play Store for Android and App Store for Apple devices. In case you’re still unable to share your screen after updating the app, then uninstall and reinstall the app. Launch the app after reinstalling it and you should be able to share content from the screen of your device without any issues.
On Windows 10
In the case of Windows 10, the screen recording settings have to be done from the native video calling browser/app that you are using. If the browser is misbehaving, then consider uninstalling the app from the Windows settings and reinstalling it again.

That means your colleagues will be able to either see all the calendar items in their full details or will be able to see and edit them.
Can View When I’m Busy
This is the default permission level, and if you opt not to change it, this is what the recipient will automatically have. Your co-workers with whom you shared your calendar will be able to open it and only see if you’re available, busy, out of the office or if you have an appointment.
Can View Titles and Locations
If you want to show more details to the calendar recipients, choose the “Can view titles and locations” option. Although this gives some access to limited details, your colleagues can now see the location and titles (or subjects) of your meetings. You can label some of your meetings as private appointments, and they will not show the location and title. Instead, they will be designated private even when using this permission level.
Can View All Details
This permission level setting will let recipients see full details and all calendar items. Besides meetings and appointments, they will also see the attendees, meeting notes, and attachments.
This permission level will allow your colleagues to change your Outlook Calendar. They will be able to add or remove your appointments. But they will not be able to receive meeting requests for you, nor will they be able to respond to the meeting invites.
You’ll probably want to assign this permission level to someone trustworthy. It will allow them to handle all the meetings, appointments, and invitations fully. When you assign someone delegate permission, you can choose whether to give them the power to handle your private appointments. But to finetune these Outlook Calendar options, you’ll have to go to Account Settings.
To do so follow these steps:
1. Go to File in the upper left corner of the Outlook app.
2. In the Info tab select Account Settings.
3. Find the Delegate Access option
4. Configure the Delegate options. You can choose your meeting requests to be delivered only to your delegates, but you’ll receive their copies. The second option will have only your delegates receiving meeting requests. The third option will send meeting requests to both you and your delegate.
It’s important to know that you can’t set a whole organization or external users as delegates. This permission level is reserved only for specific users or groups. Delegates will have full access to all calendar items, so choose carefully to whom you want to assign this permission level.
