Google’s John Mueller offered additional details about what could cause a site to lose ranking in the recent core algorithm update. And it has nothing to do with authors.

Question About Core Algorithm Update

Here is the question asked:

“After the recent Google search algorithm update, we’ve seen dramatic negative impact in our average positions for our most common keywords. Our site has not changed. Can you describe what the changes were that might be affecting the SEO?”

What Changed in Google’s Algorithm

John Mueller answered with a general description of what changed.

It’s not that your website is low quality

It’s about how Google defines what is relevant to a user query

What is relevant for specific users.

This is what Google’s John Mueller said:

“This is something kind of like we mentioned before. These are general algorithm updates that we make from time to time with regards to search. And it’s not like your site is worse or different in any way. It’s essentially our algorithms are re-evaluating what we think makes sense what we think is relevant for search results for specific queries and users.

And this can and should change over time. That’s completely normal.

One example you might use is if you have a query like best movies. Then that’s something like where obviously like last year you’ll have one set of movies and maybe if you looked at it this year you’d have a different set of movies.

And it’s not that the old movies are worse in any way. It’s just like well things have changed. And that’s kind of how things are evolving in general…”

Meaning of Search Query Changes

This part about changes in what search queries mean is an important takeaway. What a search query means to the majority of users making that search query is transient. Transient means that it changes, that it is not permanent.

When people mean when they search for certain phrases can change. This doesn’t mean that the definition of the phrase changes, either.

In my almost 20 years of experience evaluating sites that have lost rankings, some of the issues relate directly to the content and how it aligns with the prevailing user intent.

There are many reasons why a site will lose rankings. In a core algo update it’s good to not be locked into one factor. But understanding user intent and how users are satisfied with a search result can sometimes be a good area to begin the investigation.

Google Offers Image Search Indexing Tips

In a Google Webmaster Hangout, a publisher asked if it makes a difference whether an image is published using a regular image tag or by displaying an image via CSS as a background image.

Mueller’s response was interesting because it could explain why some images don’t perform well in Google image search. Here is what he said:

“…from our point of view, for image search, we would use the image tag with the source attribute pointing at the image… and as far as I know we don’t use CSS images at all for image search. So for normal web search it doesn’t matter. You can use whatever works best for you. If you want to have these images indexed in image search then I would definitely use a normal image tag for that.”

Takeaway:

If that’s true, then for publishers who wish to keep an image out of Google’s Image Search, this represents yet another way to do that. The images are still indexed, but they won’t be found in Google Image Search.  But for publishers who do want to have their images displayed in Google Image Search, this is a wake up call to use standard image tags and avoid using CSS to display images as background images.

Will This Harm My Featured Snippets? Implications for Site Auditing

I don’t know how many search marketing professionals check how images are displayed, via regular HTML image tags or CSS background images, but this may be yet another issue to look into.  I myself am going to pay increased attention to the default image handling by CMS themes. If you or your client want your images to be indexed by Google Image Search, then you may wish to check how those images are coded.

What is Google Image Search and Should I worry?

Google image search is one of several kinds of specialized searches Google provides. For some publishers it’s an important source of traffic. But for many it’s not a big concern. You may wish to review your traffic logs and traffic analytics to see how much traffic is coming from Google Images and if that traffic is important.

Minecraft Live Mob Vote 2023: Winner, New Mob Details, And More

Minecraft Live 2023 is just a couple of weeks away, and the most anticipated part of the event is the Minecraft Mob Vote 2023. Players are ready to vote and bring their favorite new mob to the game with Minecraft 1.20 update. But with multiple good options revealed this week, it can be confusing to choose just one. In 2023, Allay won the mob vote and made it into the game with the Minecraft 1.19 update, and some players were not happy about it. Luckily, you have a chance to make a difference this year. So, let’s go over all the options for the latest mob vote and help you choose the best!

Minecraft Live Mob Vote 2023: All You Need to Know (2024) Choose the Next New Minecraft Mob Sniffer Mob

As per the storyline described in the teaser video, Sniffer is an extinct overworld mob that can be brought back with its rare eggs. Once the sniffer egg hatches, it spawns a baby sniffer which later grows into an adult. Then, the sniffer searches for hidden seeds by sniffing the ground.

Moreover, as confirmed by developers in the blog post, the arrival of the Sniffer might also signal the addition of new and unique plants to the game. You will hate to wait for this new mob to find the rare seeds, which later can be planted to grow new types of plants.

Rascal

Next, seems like the Warden isn’t the only mysterious mob hiding beneath the overworld of Minecraft. If you go beneath the world height of Y=0, you might spot a Rascal (if you choose to vote for it, that is). This neutral mob loves to play hide-and-seek with the players. You get hints to find, and once you spot the Rascal three times, it drops rare items.

Tuff Golem

After the sad defeat of Copper Golem in 2023’s mob vote, Minecraft is giving the golem family a second chance at expansion. This time, we have a chance to bring a Tuff Golem to the game. These are passive tiny mobs that usually stay stationary as a statue. Then, when you wake it up, the Tuff Golem randomly walks around and picks up any item you drop.

Similar to an Allay, the Tuff Golem can’t pick more than one item at a time. But, they will also be one of the most highly customizable mobs if you vote for them. Also, depending upon the type of wool you use in their construction, the Tuff Golem spawns wearing a matching cloak. Though, it’s unclear if they will act like a pet or whether they can find their way into some of the best Minecraft farms.

How to Vote for New Mob in Minecraft Live 2023

With three creative new mob ideas, you might be eager to learn how to vote for the next new mob that will come to the Minecraft world. So, Minecraft developer Mojang has detailed three methods you can use to vote for the new mob. And no, it is not relying on Twitter polls this time around to give the community a fair choice to pick their favorite mob.

The three methods you can use to participate in Minecraft Mob Vote 2023 and choose the next mob coming to the game are:

An Exclusive Bedrock Edition Server

Java Edition section of the Minecraft launcher

Minecraft Mob Vote 2023: Who’s the Winner?

So, the biggest question that you might have is – who’s the winner of Minecraft Live Mob Vote 2023? And well, we finally have an answer.

Moreover, as we have mentioned above, the cute little mob, Allay, was the winner of the fan vote during the Minecraft Live 2023 event. This fan-loved mob came as a useful addition to the Minecraft 1.19 update, helping you collect items and automate collection farms. You can find out how to tame Allays in Minecraft and how to make automatic farms using Allays via the linked articles.

Beebom Opinion Poll: Minecraft Mob Vote 2023

Note: This is an UNOFFICIAL opinion poll for Beebom readers. The real voting will officially take place on Minecraft’s website on the 14th of October, 2023. Your vote on our website doesn’t count towards the final votes. Its only purpose is to gauge public opinion about these mobs. So, which one are you going to vote for next week?

Intel’s Next Processor Details Leaked?

A Taiwanese publication is reporting that Intel (NASDAQ: INTC) plans to release three Nehalem quad-core processors at the end of the fourth quarter, complete with specs on the new chips. DigiTimes, based in Taipei, cited motherboard vendors as its sources, many of which are also based in Taipei.

In addition to the chips, Intel (NASDAQ: INTC) will also launch the X58 and ICH10 chipset combination to support these processors. These will use the QuickPath Interconnect (QPI) architecture, replacing the venerable frontside bus design.

The TDP seems rather high, given Intel’s top Core 2 processors run at 95 watts and the top Xeons run at 120 watts. Part of the reason is that the on-die memory controller will add a good 15 to 20 watts to the processor, since it is no longer a separate chip. But also, reasons the analysts, that’s the top end of the power rating.

“For all I know, that could be a maximum rating just so you could design a heat sink for worst case scenario,” said Tony Massimini, chief of technology for Semico Research. “It was probably something on a spec sheet, but right now I would guess those spec sheets are a boiler plate and will be the maxed on the top end. I would think when these [processors] are announced they will put out more precise spec sheets.”

Nehalem is a major new architecture from Intel, one that finally puts the venerable frontside bus and external memory controller out to pasture for good. It adds a memory controller to the CPU and a high-speed interconnect, meaning the architecture will be very similar to AMD’s Athlon, Opteron and Phenom designs.

Google: Timing Of September Core Update After Hcu Not Coincidental

Google’s Danny Sullivan answered a tweet that questioned the timing of the September Core Algorithm Update soon after the Helpful Content Update.

Dr.Pete Meyers tweeted that he had a hard time imagining that the two updates coming one after the other was a coincidence.

He tweeted:

“Hard to imagine that a September Core Update right on the heels (literally zero business days later) of the Helpful Content Update is a coincidence.

These aren’t spontaneous events Google just wakes up Monday morning and decides to kick off.”

Pete  followed up later on with another tweet to clarify his meaning:

“My tweet may have come across more conspiratorial than intended — I wasn’t suggesting that one was meant to obfuscate the other so much as speculating that a Core Update might be a natural, planned follow-up to the new signals introduced in the HCU.”

A core algorithm update following by days the end of a targeted update like the Helpful Content Update (HCU) feels unusual.

So Pete had good reason to speculate that the timing was not coincidental.

And though it felt unusual that one update followed another so closely, it wasn’t unprecedented.

For example, Google rolled out a total of six updates from June to July 2023.

Why Core Update Followed Helpful Content Update

Danny Sullivan, who is Google’s Search Liaison, answered Pete with a series of tweets, confirming that the core update was not a coincidence, that there was reason for one following the other.

Danny tweeted:

“Just saw this. We’ve worked very hard to keep updates separated from each other, or as little overlap as possible, to help creators understand more.

So no, not coincidence we are due a core update but said let’s wait on that until the helpful content update has rolled out…”

He tweeted:

“I get some folks are trying to read more into things that aren’t there, and that’s always going to be a fact of SEO life.

But if the point was to purposely confuse or whatever, we could roll multiple update on the very same day.

We’ve worked to do the opposite…”

Danny followed up by stating that sometimes it’s going to be inevitable that updates will follow one after another.

He explained:

“It’ll be unavoidable that some updates might overlap as we can’t hold things we believe will help improve search back. But I think we’ve done more to communicate more about updates we do, when they happen and what they involve than ever, including our page”

Danny continued:

“And when it’s unavoidable for updates to overlap, we have worked to space them apart as much as possible so people might have a better idea of what might have caused a particular change (and for many sites, updates cause no change at all).”

No Connection Between Two Updates

According to Danny Sullivan, there was no connection between the two updates.

The reason for the core update was simply that one was due to be released.

Danny said that Google is able to roll out multiple updates simultaneously, which meant they could have released the core algorithm update at the same time as the HCU and not mention the HCU at all.

But Google decided to announce the HCU and purposely postpone releasing the core update until after the HCU was finished, thereby spacing them out.
