Suggested April 2024 Google: Timing Of September Core Update After Hcu Not Coincidental

Google’s Danny Sullivan answered a tweet that questioned the timing of the September Core Algorithm Update soon after the Helpful Content Update.

Dr.Pete Meyers tweeted that he had a hard time imagining that the two updates coming one after the other was a coincidence.

He tweeted:

“Hard to imagine that a September Core Update right on the heels (literally zero business days later) of the Helpful Content Update is a coincidence.

These aren’t spontaneous events Google just wakes up Monday morning and decides to kick off.”

Pete  followed up later on with another tweet to clarify his meaning:

“My tweet may have come across more conspiratorial than intended — I wasn’t suggesting that one was meant to obfuscate the other so much as speculating that a Core Update might be a natural, planned follow-up to the new signals introduced in the HCU.”

A core algorithm update following by days the end of a targeted update like the Helpful Content Update (HCU) feels unusual.

So Pete had good reason to speculate that the timing was not coincidental.

And though it felt unusual that one update followed another so closely, it wasn’t unprecedented.

For example, Google rolled out a total of six updates from June to July 2023.

Why Core Update Followed Helpful Content Update

Danny Sullivan, who is Google’s Search Liaison, answered Pete with a series of tweets, confirming that the core update was not a coincidence, that there was reason for one following the other.

Danny tweeted:

“Just saw this. We’ve worked very hard to keep updates separated from each other, or as little overlap as possible, to help creators understand more.

So no, not coincidence we are due a core update but said let’s wait on that until the helpful content update has rolled out…”

He tweeted:

“I get some folks are trying to read more into things that aren’t there, and that’s always going to be a fact of SEO life.

But if the point was to purposely confuse or whatever, we could roll multiple update on the very same day.

We’ve worked to do the opposite…”

Danny followed up by stating that sometimes it’s going to be inevitable that updates will follow one after another.

He explained:

“It’ll be unavoidable that some updates might overlap as we can’t hold things we believe will help improve search back. But I think we’ve done more to communicate more about updates we do, when they happen and what they involve than ever, including our page”

Danny continued:

“And when it’s unavoidable for updates to overlap, we have worked to space them apart as much as possible so people might have a better idea of what might have caused a particular change (and for many sites, updates cause no change at all).”

No Connection Between Two Updates

According to Danny Sullivan, there was no connection between the two updates.

The reason for the core update was simply that one was due to be released.

Danny said that Google is able to roll out multiple updates simultaneously, which meant they could have released the core algorithm update at the same time as the HCU and not mention the HCU at all.

But Google decided to announce the HCU and purposely postpone releasing the core update until after the HCU was finished, thereby spacing them out.

Google Ads App Gets New Features After 3 Months Of No Updates

New features include:

Custom notifications about performance and status changes.

More data about fluctuations in campaign performance.

Here’s an overview of each of these updates.

Custom Notifications

Advertisers can now use the Google Ads mobile app to set custom notifications about things that are important to them.

In this example provided by Google you can see how the app has been set to send a notification when conversion volume goes up by more than 10%.

To set a custom notification, first go to the Settings page and opt in to notifications if you haven’t already.

Then tap on custom notifications to set up your own alerts. These can be adjusted at any time.

Performance Insights

In addition, the app will send real-time notifications when significant changes are detected in any of these newly added performance insights.

The notification will explain why the change occurred, and Google Ads may offer a recommendation to help resolve the issues.

These updates are now available in the latest version of the Google Ads mobile app on Android and iOS.

Long Time, No Updates

This update follows a three month gap of no updates to the Google Ads app. Google rarely lets any of its apps go longer than a month without at least a minor update, but that has not been the case lately.

Google’s suite of apps have gone so long without updates that iOS is warning users they’re using an out of date app.

— Spencer Dailey (@SpencerDailey) February 10, 2023

Updates to Google’s apps have started to roll out over the past several days, but many are still three months out of date.

At the time of this writing apps like Google Chrome, Google Drive, Google Maps, Google Photos, and others are waiting for updates.

Apple now requires app developers to self-report on the data it collects from users and how the data is being used.

The information provided by developers is used to create a privacy “nutrition label” that users can review before downloading an app.

For example, here’s the new privacy label for the Google Ads app:

Given that Google stopped updating its apps for several months after Apple introduced these mandatory labels, some think the company is trying to skirt Apple’s rules. Again, that’s purely speculation.

Google has recently gone on record saying it has no plans to develop alternative methods of tracking users.

If Google’s recent activity is anything to go by, more of its outdated apps may receive updates in the coming days or weeks.

Google Offers More Algo Update Details

Google’s John Mueller offered additional details about what could cause a site to lose ranking in the recent core algorithm update. And it has nothing to do with authors.

Question About Core Algorithm Update

Here is the question asked:

“After the recent Google search algorithm update, we’ve seen dramatic negative impact in our average positions for our most common keywords. Our site has not changed. Can you describe what the changes were that might be affecting the SEO?”

What Changed in Google’s Algorithm

John Mueller answered with a general description of what changed.

It’s not that your website is low quality

It’s about how Google defines what is relevant to a user query

What is relevant for specific users.

This is what Google’s John Mueller said:

“This is something kind of like we mentioned before. These are general algorithm updates that we make from time to time with regards to search. And it’s not like your site is worse or different in any way. It’s essentially our algorithms are re-evaluating what we think makes sense what we think is relevant for search results for specific queries and users.

And this can and should change over time. That’s completely normal.

One example you might use is if you have a query like best movies. Then that’s something like where obviously like last year you’ll have one set of movies and maybe if you looked at it this year you’d have a different set of movies.

And it’s not that the old movies are worse in any way. It’s just like well things have changed. And that’s kind of how things are evolving in general…”

Meaning of Search Query Changes

This part about changes in what search queries mean is an important takeaway. What a search query means to the majority of users making that search query is transient. Transient means that it changes, that it is not permanent.

When people mean when they search for certain phrases can change. This doesn’t mean that the definition of the phrase changes, either.

In my almost 20 years of experience evaluating sites that have lost rankings, some of the issues relate directly to the content and how it aligns with the prevailing user intent.

There are many reasons why a site will lose rankings. In a core algo update it’s good to not be locked into one factor. But understanding user intent and how users are satisfied with a search result can sometimes be a good area to begin the investigation.

8 Tips To Fix Iphone Screen Dimming After Ios 16 Update

Recently, a large number of users have taken to several forums to complain about the unexpected iPhone screen dimming. The sudden dimming of the screen causes enormous frustration while leaving many either scratching their head or wondering whether there is screen damage.

Irrespective of what sort of emotion you are going through, we have found some workable tips to fix the iPhone screen dimming issue after the iOS 16 software update. With that in mind, give these solutions a try to resolve the problem.

Best Tips to Fix iPhone Screen Dimming Issue in iOS 16

To get started, let’s first figure out some of the possible causes of the screen dimming issue on iOS!

Why Does My iPhone’s Screen Turns Unexpectedly Dim?

Aside from a hidden software bug, you can blame multiple-notable features that cause problems due to their unexpected behavior. Not to mention, you can always put some doubt on an occasional software glitch as it is part and parcel of a software-driven device. But there is no need to panic as we have offered tips based on all the possible reasons.

1. Manually Adjust the Brightness of the Display and Reboot Your Device

The very first thing I would recommend you do when faced with the annoying screen dimming problem on your iOS device is to manually adjust the brightness and also give a quick reboot to the device. Yeah, that’s exactly what has worked for me a few times. So, make sure to try out this simple yet effective trick.

Simply bring up the Control Center on your iPhone and then drag the brightness slider up/down to adjust the brightness.

After that, restart your iPhone. Once your device has rebooted, use it for some time to check if the screen dimming issue is gone. If it has, there is a good chance that a minor software glitch was triggering the problem.

2. Disable the True Tone Display

True Tone enables your iPhone’s display to automatically adapt to ambient lighting conditions to make the colors appear consistent in different environments. While there is no denying the fact that True Tone is very helpful and designed to enhance your viewing experience, at times, it tends to go completely wrong. And when it happens, the colors do not appear to be consistent. Hence, turn it off.

Now, manually adjust the brightness using the slider (available on this very screen). Then, use your smartphone for some time to find out if you have gotten the better of the problem.

3. Turn OFF Attention Aware Features

Another feature that might be causing the issue is “Attention Aware.” For those unaware, attention awareness allows the iPhone (with Face ID) to check for attention before dimming the display. Again, this is a pretty handy feature but in some cases, it may begin to ill-function. In that case, the display of your iPhone may tend to dim without any rhyme or reason.

4. Disable Auto-Brightness

Auto-brightness smartly adjusts the brightness of your iPhone based on the lighting conditions. Hence, when you go out, the display turns bright. And when you are indoors, the brightness goes down so that you can have a more convenient viewing experience.

In most cases, the auto-brightness feature works reliably on iPhone. But, there are times when it gets completely wrong and fails to adjust the brightness in accordance with the lighting conditions. So, try turning off the auto-brightness to figure out if it resolves the problem.

5. Hard Reset Your iPhone

You can always bank on a hard reset to help you get rid of a common iOS bug. Thus, it’s worth having a go.

To get it done, press and quickly release the volume-up button. Then, press and quickly release the volume down button.

Next, be sure to hold down the power button until the Apple logo comes up on the screen.

6. Reset Your iPhone

Factory reset is also like a go-to problem solver, especially when you are dealing with a persistent issue. Therefore, give it a shot as well. Note that factory reset completely wipes out the entire existing settings and put them all in the default state. Nonetheless, all your media and data remain safe.

As I stated above, the iPhone’s screen dimming could very well be owing to a software bug. So, updating the software would be a wise move.

Just in case, none of the tips has worked in resolving the screen dimming problem, I would recommend you contact Apple Support without any more delay. I suspect there might some hardware failure or screen damage at the heart of the issue.

Wrapping Up…

Having myself faced the iPhone screen dimming problem, I must say that the basic tips like hard reset and turning off True Tone and Auto-Brightness would help you overcome the issue. However, in some cases, the software update could also enable you to troubleshoot it. And only on the rarest occasions, you might have to contact Apple for any technical assistance.

With the release of this month’s much-expected Patch Tuesday updates, a plethora of new fixes, enhancements, and security improvements have come to all versions of the Windows OS.

Of course, some updates stand out more than others, either because they bring a few extra features, or because applying them may subject you to some unforeseen issues.

However, the September Patch Tuesday updates all bring one major fix that concern the use of HTTP-based intranet servers.

A major networking vulnerability has been addressed

According to the official Microsoft Changelogs, one particular change has been brought to al major versions of Windows 10, ranging from Windows 10 v1507 all the way to Windows 10 v2004.

Addresses a security vulnerability issue with user proxies and HTTP-based intranet servers. After installing this update, HTTP-based intranet servers cannot leverage a user proxy by default to detect updates.

Scans using these servers will fail if the clients do not have a configured system proxy.

If you must leverage a user proxy, you must configure the behavior using the Windows Update policy “Allow user proxy to be used as a fallback if detection using system proxy fails.”

This change does not affect customers who secure their Windows Server Update Services (WSUS) servers with the Transport Layer Security (TLS) or Secure Sockets Layer (SSL) protocols.

For more information, see Ensuring clients stay secure, changes to scans against Windows Server Update Service (WSUS) servers.

Apparently, starting from an undisclosed time period, a client that didn’t have their proxies configured could still be used to access the servers and perform scans.

Thankfully enough, Microsoft came and added some explanations on how to configure your proxies to now be compatible with the latest changes.

Additionally, they went on and added that not everyone was targeted by this update, such as those using the Transport Layer Security (TLS) or Secure Sockets Layer (SSL) protocols for added protection.

That pretty much wraps it up with this major fix. If you need a summary of the September Patch Tuesday, we have written this article for you where we included all of the most important changelogs, along with direct download links so that you can get the updates right away.

Speaking of which, always remember that these monthly updates are here for a reason, as they are the result of months-long investigations and troubleshooting, so applying the patches as soon as possible is extremely important.
