An appliance designed for Web 2.0 companies may take them back to the future with tape storage.

Tape has been around since the dawn of electronic computers and is still used for many types of long-term storage, but it hasn’t played much of a role in modern Web-based applications. When consumers go to check out old photos on social media sites, it’s likely those images will be stored on low-cost spinning disks, though Facebook is now looking to flash for this type of data.

Now tape specialist Spectra Logic is introducing a software interface and an appliance to help companies with huge amounts of less-used data shift it over to tape libraries. Tape is the cheapest way to store files for a long time that don’t need to be used frequently, said Molly Rector, Spectra’s executive vice president of product management and worldwide marketing.

Spectra Logic is jumping on what some industry analysts call a growing role for tape in some organizations with big data. Overall sales of tape systems are falling, but individual deployments are getting bigger, analysts say. Low cost and energy demands are among tape’s calling cards.

On Thursday, Spectra Logic introduced the BlackPearl Deep Storage Appliance, which uses the company’s recently announced DS3 interface. The appliance can work with special software clients for Hadoop and other big-data environments or with clients that enterprises and software vendors write themselves, according to Spectra.

Until now, Web and cloud data have had no direct interfaces to tape storage systems, Rector said. Tape libraries have special requirements, including the need to find the correct cartridge and retrieve it. “You have to know how to talk to robots,” she said. That has meant complicated middleware that Web and cloud companies don’t want to deal with, according to Rector.

DS3 and the BlackPearl provide the missing link, using REST (Representational State Transfer), an architectural approach that’s commonly used in Web and cloud environments, Rector said: “Now they can just write a normal REST application and they don’t have to know anything else beyond that.” The appliance does all the rest, including managing the data transfer process and assigning object metadata, according to Spectra. For now, the BlackPearl is designed for use only with Spectra Logic tape libraries.

Behind the appliance, a tape storage system can scale up from 15 terabytes to multiple petabytes, Spectra said. That suits the needs of enterprises in entertainment, life sciences, oil and gas exploration, government, finance and social media, as well as cloud storage providers, according to the company. Yahoo has already started using the technology to archive Hadoop data, Rector said.

That’s cheaper than long-term storage based on hard drives or cloud storage services, and users can access the data as often as they want at no extra cost, which isn’t always the case with cloud storage, Rector said. Tape is also the most space-efficient storage technology and has a typical shelf life of 30 years, according to the company.

The BlackPearl is available for beta testing now and set to go on sale in December. The Hadoop DS3 client and the Spectra Logic Developer Program for enterprises and software vendors are available now.

Things To Consider Before Hiring A Web Design Agency For Your Business

One of the most crucial aspects of making a business thrive is getting the right website done. We live in a day and age where having a digital presence for business becomes a must.

Are you a business seeking to build a digital presence of your own? Then it is highly important that you have the right people to come in and help you establish the perfect online presence.

When it comes to creating website experiences, nothing serves the purpose as remarkably as a website design agency and hiring the right one will ensure your business turns into a success story.

But how should business owners conclude which is the best web design agency to hire for the job? Here are a few prerequisites which I want to share with everyone.

By adhering to the following practices, you will surely be able to find the right web design agency.

Hiring a Web Design Agency for Your Business 1. Choose a Web Design Agency Relevant to Your Business

Most business owners are preoccupied with a series of tasks and they hardly have enough time to find out which web design agency is the best option for their digital businesses.

When it comes to website designing, they take the burden off their shoulders by hiring a professional website development company New york. They let them take the creative edge and build them a solution.

Hence, when you as a business owner aim to choose a website design agency, make sure you pick the one that equally compliments your business practices and know your niche for the better.

2. Identify How Much Experience Does the Web Design Agency Hold?

So before you proceed with hiring a particular web design agency for your business, make sure to identify how many years of experience they have when it comes to creating websites.

Some work in the local market only, while others prefer to work in the international market as well.

Perform a thorough analysis of the web design agency before you conclude they are the right choice.

The more experienced your web design agency is, the more better they can understand the needs and wants of the average audience interested in purchasing a digital service from your platform.

If you find a web design agency which is famous then it’s a surplus for you.

3. Is the Web Design Agency Well Versed and working in coherence with the Modern Trends?

Just as much as creating a website is paramount, so is the fact that you create a website which compliments the modern day web design trends.

When you create a website design company which is in accordance with the latest trends, it increases the chances of your website to appear in front of your desired target audiences.

By leveraging the power of the latest technology tools and modern web design, businesses can easily capitalize on gaining more customers.

4. Understand the Type of Website Design Process they Follow

If you want to create an impact, focus on the procedure which is to be followed. Ask your website design agency what methods do they implement to create the website design for their customers.

When you are working with a stable web design agency firm, it takes you through an appropriate process. By becoming coherent with the design process, you get the chance of yielding extraordinary outcomes.

Some follow the agile methodology and split the website design in variable phases before they start with the development process. Similarly, many different organizations follow different processes.

By getting acquainted with such processes, a business owner can have the comfort and peace of working with a web design agency that is accustomed with the modern methodologies.

5. How Much Would it Cost and What is Your Website Design Budget?

When choosing a website design agency, make sure to consider both, how much are they charging you for the design job, and what is your overall budget limit? Ask yourself a series of questions:

How much do you think you’re ready to spend for the website?

Are they charging you by the hourly rate, or have they opt-in for a single-time payment?

Do they offer website revisions or is it just going to be a one time delivery?

6. Ask Them to Submit their Previous Case Studies

Lastly, every experienced website design agency operating in the digital landscape has a list of successful client stories to tell.

If a design agency which you’re about to onboard doesn’t have a strong portfolio to show you, they are not likely the kind of people you’re supposed to hire for the site.

Ask the web design agency to show you some of their previous works. If you can get in touch with one of the clients, it can be better for you to understand their process of web design.

By analyzing their previous work, and by learning how they proceed, you will get a better idea on how things are done by them. You will ultimately be able to make more informed decisions.

So there you go, here are some of the prerequisites that you need to pay attention to when you’re hiring a web design agency to create you a thriving digital experience.

My Big Idea: A Web

Arthur Emma (CGS’09, CAS’11, Wheelock’15) put his philosophy degree to high-tech use when he founded ByDesign, which offers web- and app-based daily planning tools for students and young professionals.

In our My Big Idea series, we bring you interviews with BU alums and other members of the University community who have launched a business, built a new product, or solved problems big and small. We ask them how they got the idea, what were their biggest stumbling blocks, and what’s next for their big idea.

Arthur Emma’s entrepreneurial streak has been evident at least since fifth grade in Wisconsin, when the principal summoned him and a friend to his office for selling fireworks out of the cafeteria.

At BU, Emma (CGS’09, CAS’11, Wheelock’15) broadened his horizons by majoring in philosophy along with business administration. Proving that you can do something with a philosophy degree, he parlayed his education into founding the technology company ByDesign, which he calls “an organizational, planning, and social networking application for college students and young professionals.”

Tech innovator was a career detour for Emma after his work with Teach for America, the nonprofit that funnels graduates of top universities into two years of teaching low-income students. At the same time, his humanities education is not unrelated to the birth of ByDesign, as it triggered his search for ways to better map out a worthwhile life by mapping out a more intentional daily schedule.

Bostonia interviewed Emma about how he conceived ByDesign, what it took to build the company—and the two things he wishes he’d done differently, at BU and after.

Q

&

A with Arthur Emma

Bostonia:

Can you explain what ByDesign provides, how it does that, and for whom?

Bostonia:

Where did you get the idea? How many employees do you have, and when did you start the company?

Bostonia:

Give us your sales pitch: how will ByDesign make my life better?

Emma: People will think you have super powers, because you will be better organized and will achieve more of your goals. You will also feel less stressed, as you will have a short- and long-term plan to keep you on track. Last, life will feel more meaningful, as you’ll be able to align your tasks with your priorities and will have the support of your ByDesign community.

Bostonia:

Looking back, is there anything you wish you had done differently? What was your biggest failure or mistake?

Emma: My biggest failure was not taking computer science classes in college. As a founder and CEO of a tech company, I had to play lots of catch-up early on. Although I’m still “relatively” young, I wish I had launched a business earlier on in my career. Launching businesses is easier when you’re young, have endless energy and less commitments.

Bostonia:

How are you funding your business and how hard was securing funding?

Emma: We’ve raised a million dollars in preseed funding. Raising money was hard, but I was fortunate enough to have a good childhood friend, Jesse Adams—coincidentally, we were both student body presidents at Boston-based schools at the same time—who introduced me to some outstanding entrepreneurs and angel investors who believed in our idea. That said, raising money is always brutal for first-time entrepreneurs in risky tech sectors who are pursuing potentially revolutionary, yet abstract, ideas.

Bostonia:

What are your most important tips for other entrepreneurs hoping to launch start-ups?

Emma: First look inwards, then look outwards. Find what you love and what brings you meaning. Entrepreneurship is a long game, and if you’re not working on something you love, you will burn out. Second, look for resources—friends, team members, associations, mentors, investors—anyone who is willing to support you, work with you, or lend an ear. Isolation is where start-ups go to die.

Bostonia:

What’s your favorite or the most fun part of the business?

Emma: The two things I enjoy most are laughing with my team and seeing the business grow. One of our core values is having a sense of humor. We believe that humor is the key ingredient for creative thinking and that it produces an environment where people perform at their best. In regard to growth, this is what start-up founders live for. There’s nothing more exciting than seeing growth, whether that is raising money, gaining customers, or bringing on important mentors. It’s validation of all your hard work.

Bostonia:

How will you grow ByDesign?

Surfing The Web Without A Mouse

If you are a fan of ’90s movies like me, you will see that all the geeks and hackers have their hands stuck to their keyboards and never use their mice. I’ve always been curious to know how they were achieving this, and what they could be typing so fast all the time. It seems impossible to do the same today. How would you go on Facebook or YouTube without using your mouse? Well, if you are really dedicated to look cool, don’t have a mouse, or want to become faster on the keyboard, there are a couple of web navigators that can be entirely controlled by keyboard shortcuts.

xxxterm

As a first example, xxxterm is a very powerful browser entirely written in C and enhanced for security. You can control by default the saved cookies, scripts, and certificates of the webpages that you visit. What makes xxxterm really interesting is that it adopts vi-like shortcuts for the navigation. If you are not familiar with vi, I invite you to take a look at one of my previous articles about its basics.

On Ubuntu, you can install xxxterm with a simple command:

For a better navigation experience, I invite you to visit the wiki page of the project where all the shortcuts are explained. However, if you just want to test it now, here are a few commands to start with right away:

“/” for searching within a page

“Ctrl+r” to refresh

Backspace to go to the previous page

Up and down arrows to scroll

“Shift+f” for the favorites

“Ctrl+t” for a new tab

“Ctrl+w” to close a tab

“Ctrl+arrow key” to switch the view between tabs

“p” to paste

“.” to highlight links

“i” to focus on the page input

Escape to remove focus (just like Vi)

uzbl-browser

sudo

apt-get install

uzbl

The shortcuts are a bit different from xxxterm’s, but again, some of them are very similar to Vi, so you should not be too lost.

“o” to open a URL

“b” to go back

“fl” to highlight links

“Fl” to highlight links and open one of them in a new window

“w” for a new window

“c” to close a window

The traditional set j, k, h, l to move within a page

“Ctrl+i” to focus on the page input

Escape to remove focus

For a more exhaustive list of shortcuts and commands, I invite you to go on the official wiki, or the Archlinux wiki which is also pretty complete.

Conclusion

Personally, I really like Uzbl. Even if it is not complete yet, it seems very promising, and perfect for small or old computers. Xxxterm is not bad either, and the vi-like behavior is very attractive. For more keyboard-based browsers, you might also want to try out Vimperator – a fork of Firefox with the same shortcuts as Vim. There is no doubt about it: if you really want to look like a cool (’90s) geek while surfing, these browsers are made for you.
