I can totally understand why.

There are so many reasons to love SEO.

SEO is fascinating.

SEO is a fast-paced, in-demand field with plenty of longevity ahead of it.

But that means SEO also attracts people who just see it as an easy money grab or work-from-home job.

They read some blogs here and there, learn the terminology, and voila! They’re changing their title on LinkedIn to “SEO Expert.”

After only a few days.

Or worse, a matter of hours.


That’s like reading a few medical books and calling yourself a doctor.

That’s not how this works.

SEO expertise, like any other field, requires time, commitment, and experience.

You can’t just declare yourself an SEO expert.

It’s not a young field anymore.

There are experts who’ve been doing SEO for decades now.

Ready to follow in their footsteps?

Here are 21 things you need to know to become an SEO expert.

1. Understand the Basics of SEO

To become an expert, start with the basics. You need to understand how audiences and search engines interact, and what you can do to optimize content effectively.

Learning the basics boils down to three core components:

The types of content that users want, expect, or need. It’s all about user intent.

The inner workings of how search engines really work.

The tools and techniques needed to optimize websites.

Without this background, you may be able to explain the “what,” but not the “why.”

As someone who has worked in this industry for 15 years, knowing the why sets you apart.

2. Build Your Own Websites

Once you understand the basics of SEO, it’s time to apply them.

Most pros will tell you they learned the most by building sites and breaking things.

This is where all the action is.

Look at the search engine results pages (SERPs).

How are they composed?

What content do they display?

Who is doing it well?

Notice how the results change when you search for different kinds of queries.

Look at how this search for “How to make alfredo sauce” differs from “alfredo sauce.”

You can see these featured snippets for recipes because I asked a question in the search box.

Then, here you can see the knowledge panel on the right.

Google is making decisions about the intent behind those queries and serving up content in a format that it thinks users want the most.

So look at the SERPs.

Technical SEO is everything that you do to make your site easier to crawl and index.

Technical SEO involves mobile usability, site speed, structured data, JavaScript, and all the mechanisms that influence how a website works.

You can have amazing content, but a slow or site with lots of bugs will hurt your performance.

With so much content to compete with, a website with a solid foundation from technical SEO can make or break your strategy.

While technical SEO helps search engines crawl and index your site more effectively, understanding content will help you improve the user experience, time on site, links, and so much more.

Gone are the days when content was created by a keyword-first strategy.

But, just because you published content, doesn’t mean users will find it.

If your rankings have dropped, despite adhering to your checklist, think creatively.

Just don’t be held captive by your checklist.

Some SEO professionals who are total experts in JavaScript SEO know next to nothing about link building.

Other people in our industry are amazing at content strategy and promotion, but terrible at some technical aspects of SEO.

At some point, you’re going to need help from someone else in the industry.

So start building connections.

Use social media to start building relationships.

Platforms like Twitter and LinkedIn make this fairly easy.

The best way to make connections and grow your network is to be willing to share information.

Don’t just take and take.

Give and take.

Remember, relationships are a two-way street.

Share your own experiences and expertise.

The idea is to continually stay in touch and develop a rapport with people.

Over time, these connections will start to see you as an expert.

Eventually, you’ll want to build a trusted network of people with whom you can troubleshoot, bounce ideas off of, and share tips, strategies, and other learnings.

One of the great things about learning SEO is the wealth of free information available to you.

Sure, there’s a lot of junk to filter through.

But there are also plenty of free courses from highly respected companies and instructors.

Homekit Weekly: Why You Should Become An Expert With Homekit Automations

Sometimes, it’s good to take a step back and build on foundations with a new year. I think about HomeKit every day, so many of the terms I throw around, like Automations, Home Hub, Homebridge, etc., might be known to experts. Still, I wanted to compile a go-to list of HomeKit terms and definitions for newcomers over the next few weeks. So this week, I want to look in-depth at HomeKit Automations.

HomeKit Weekly is a series focused on smart home accessories, automation tips and tricks, and everything to do with Apple’s smart home framework.

HomeKit Automations

HomeKit Automations are when you use an event to make something else happen. In HomeKit, here are the possible events:

People Leave

People Arrive

A Time of Day Occurs

An Accessory is Controlled (light turns on)

A Sensor Detects something

Let’s run through each of them in detail and list some possible product options that you’d need to use the automation.

People Leave Automation

Picking one of these events is how you build your automation. Let’s pick one and run through a scenario. Let’s say you want to develop an automation to turn off all HomeKit lights when people leave. You’d select the second option. The device included in the “people leave” will be the people who access your HomeKit.

In the HomeKit Automation builder, you can select “when anyone leaves” or “when the last person leaves.” For this example, choose when the last person leaves, as we wouldn’t want to turn off the lights when someone is still home. You can also set it to only operate during set periods.

You’ll select the devices you want to include in this automation in the next screen. In my situation, I have a Scene created with the lights I’d like to include, so it’s easier to pick it over adding devices manually. Then, tap on the scene to set the lights off when the scene is run.

People Arrive Automation

This scene is very similar to the previous one, but with the reverse of running when people arrive. Like the People Leave automation, you can select if it runs when the first person arrives or when anyone arrives. Going back to our previous example with lights, you’d likely want to choose when anyone arrives, but perhaps only after 3:00 PM. You’ll have this option on the initial screen. You can then go through and select your accessories and finalize the automation.

A Time of Day Occurs

A Time of Day HomeKit Automation is set to run at a specific time. An example of where you might want to use this is you want certain lights to turn on at 8:00 a.m. regardless of who’s home or not. A Time of Day HomeKit Automation will run based on the time alone.

An Accessory is Controlled

The When an Accessory Is Controlled automation is one I don’t use a lot, but it’s one of the more flexible ones that Apple allows inside of HomeKit. The idea here is to bridge accessories together based on a chain reaction. One example is that if your HomeKit Security System triggers, then you could set all of the lights in the house to flip on at full blast.

A Sensor Detects Something

The last automation available in HomeKit is when a sensor detects something. Possible scenarios here are HomeKit motion sensors detecting motion turning on lights at a preset time or having a water leak sensor play a particular song if it detects water. If you have HomeKit Door Sensors, they can also be used in these automations.


As you can see, HomeKit provides a lot of flexibility when setting up automations. In my opinion, it’s one of the best parts of HomeKit and why you’ll want to make sure all of your smart home devices are in HomeKit. As long as your devices all exist in Apple’s smart home platform, you can tie them together regardless of who the product’s manufacturer is.

Once you’ve installed the Xbox Insider Hub and have accepted the terms, select the Insider Content button to see what features are available for you to test early.

Alpha Skip Ahead – Another invite only ring that gives users access to features far ahead of other Xbox Insider members. Sometimes Alpha Skip Ahead members gain access to exclusive features that are never available to the other rings.

How to Level Up Your Xbox Insider Account

To get access to new features earlier than other users, you must level up your Xbox Insider account to reach new rings. To level up, you can complete quests and surveys in the Xbox Insider app.

For example, the first quest available to you may be to complete a survey on gaming with others. This particular survey gives 10XP, which puts you half of the way through level 1. It will take some time for new quests and surveys to appear. On top of that, you’ll need to be an Xbox Insider for some time to go to each new ring, as mentioned above.

It can take a long time to level up through each ring in the Xbox Insider program, but if you spend a few minutes each week in the app, you’ll slowly begin to get closer to the beta ring. Once you’re in the beta ring, you cannot get any higher unless you’re invited.

While Alpha Ring testers are given access on an invite only basis, there are some steps you can take to increase your chances. To have a better chance at being invited, make sure to take part in as many surveys, quests, and tests as possible.
