If you just picked up a powerful new CPU, like one of the Ryzen 7 family, such as the 5800X or 5900X, then lucky you! The best way to really put your new CPU through its paces is to benchmark it. There are various tools you can use, but Cinebench is the go-to for most enthusiasts.

In a relatively fast 10-minute test, Cinebench uses a unique image-rendering process that maxes out all your CPU cores, giving you the perfect picture of the power inside your PC. Its tests give you a far more accurate “real-world” benchmark reading than most other benchmarks which tend to be more synthetic.

Cinebench R15, R20 or R23

If you look into Cinebench, you may find there are a few different versions floating around. For all intents and purposes, the latest version (R23) is the best one to use. It’s the most accurate tests, has new features, like easily testing single-core performance, and will automatically disable itself if your PC doesn’t have the required RAM to run it.

So stick with R23, and let’s crack on.

How to Use Cinebench R23

Once you’ve downloaded and installed Cinebench R23, it’s time to start benchmarking.

With Cinebench R23 open, you’ll see it’s a little different if you’ve used previous versions. The default options at the top-left corner are now a Multi Core and Single Core test. Also note that due to the new algorithms, benchmark scores can’t be compared with previous versions.

But before you do this, you should set up a way to measure the temperature of your CPU during the benchmarks. This is important, as the benchmark will put your CPU under a lot of stress, and you’ll want to know it’s not overheating.

One of the more accurate tools for measuring CPU temperature is HWiNFO, which is generally a great tool for keeping an eye on all the moving parts inside your PC.

Once you’ve installed HWiNFO, open it. (You can check the “Sensors Only” box.)

Take a look at the “Maximum” temperature in HWiNFO64 to see how hot the benchmark gets your CPU running. Maximum recommended CPU temperatures vary, but you really don’t want to be going over 80°C in a Multi Core test.

As you can see, my mildly tweaked (and undervolted) Ryzen 5800X just outperforms the same CPU running at its default clock settings, so I’m happy with that!

This is obviously more strenuous, but if something goes wrong during the test (like your PC crashing), then you may need to make adjustments to your CPU in the way of thermals, undervolting and so on.

The correct alignment of all the PC fans is crucial to cool down your overall system temperature. And some components may even start thermal throttling, giving you a lower performance than expected.

Besides this, your PC will also collect more dust if you set the fans direction incorrectly. Therefore, knowing which way the air flows from your fans is a significant piece of information that you can use to make your system perform better and last longer.

But first, let us see why the PC fan direction matters.

The PC fan direction is one factor that most beginner PC builders overlook when building a PC. However, if you make the CPU fans face the right way, you may see a drop in motherboard temperature and an increase in its efficiency.

The overall internal component’s temperature not only depends on their usage, but also on factors like airflow, internal air pressure and dust settlement. Dust settlement and airflow is a fairly common and easy concepts to grasp. So, let us talk about air pressure here.

When you insert the CPU fans, there are three possible cases of air pressure.

Positive air pressure

Negative air pressure

Neutral air pressure

Talking about positive air pressure, the number of intake fans exceeds the number of exhaust fans. This will result in the air to pass into the system mostly through a dust filter. And thus, the insides of your system will be fairly clean.

However, as the system does not throw out the air efficiently due to fewer exhaust fans, this may cause the system to trap heat, making the setup slightly warmer.

Negative Air Pressure

On negative air pressure, the number of intake fans is less than the number of the exhaust fan. This will create a vacuum inside the CPU case. Once this happens, air starts to flow inside the system through all openings inside the case, which means that the dust will enter through every opening and not only the dust filter.

Therefore, your system becomes dusty if you have negative air pressure.

Neutral Air Pressure

In neutral air pressure, the number of intake and exhaust fans is the same. This is an ideal scenario as the air will mostly enter the CPU from the dust filter, and the cooling is also efficient.

You can check the direction of airflow in a CPU fan in multiple ways. The stock CPU case fan comes with a plastic screw attached to it. When you attach it to a heat sink, the air will flow towards the heat sink, pulling in the air from the opposite direction.

However, determining the fan direction in most CPU coolers and case fans can be daunting. Here are a few ways you can check the CPU fan direction.

One simple way to determine the direction of airflow from the fans is by checking the arrows on the sides. The arrow represents the direction that air flows when the fan starts to spin.

The direction the arrow points towards is the exhaust, and the opposite is the intake.

However, not all fans have this arrow indication. If your case or CPU fans do not have an arrow, continue with the article to figure out the fan direction.

Another indication you can check is the X shaped on one of the two sides of the fan. You will see a line that goes across all the corners of the fan diagonally. Thus, making an X.

The side with no pattern is the intake, whereas the side with the X is the exhaust. However, all CPU or case fans will not have an X marking. Some will have a different pattern.

If none of the above solutions help you to determine the CPU fan direction, connect it to a power supply.

Connect the cable from the fan to the CPU_FAN header on the motherboard if it is a CPU fan or to the SYS_FAN header if it is a case fan.

Once you connect the fans to the motherboard, connect the board to a power supply unit (PSU) and turn on the motherboard.

Once the fan starts to spin, use light tissue paper to check the intake and exhaust sides.

If you cannot connect the fan to a power supply, you can always go to the manufacturer’s website and search for the product. The CPU or case fan manufacturer is usually written on the center.

Once you have the manufacturer’s name, search for the product. Some CPU fans may even have a user manual to guide you through the steps to connect it.

You can either check CPU temperature from BIOS or by using hardware monitoring tools.

A motherboard’s BIOS contains all the details about the system’s health. And this includes CPU and system temperatures, voltage, and fan speed.

Depending on the motherboard manufacturer, you can get into BIOS in multiple ways. In most computers, pressing the Delete key repeatedly during startup prompts you to BIOS. Refer to the motherboard or laptop user manual to get into BIOS.

If you are running an Intel chip, lowering the maximum power processor state to 99% can improve your CPU performance at a lower temperature. When you have set the maximum power processor to 100%, the processor will use all its resources, consuming more power and causing the CPU temperature to rise. And thus, the processor will start thermal throttling, decreasing its performance.

On 99%, the CPU fan will not spin at a high RPM and will not have an extreme temperature. So, the CPU will perform better with lower temperatures.

Multiple applications may run in the background right from the start when you turn on the computer. These applications will take resources, resulting in low computer performance. Therefore, it is best that you end any unnecessary background applications and disable the application that starts automatically during startup using the Task Manager.

Below are the steps to end background processes and disable the startup application.

A CPU with a dried-up thermal paste does a bad job dissipating heat to the heat sink. This results in a rise in the CPU’s temperature.

Once the CPU’s temperature reaches a certain temperature, it lowers the performance to prevent itself from any damage due to extreme heat. This is called thermal throttling. So, if you find that your CPU is not performing as it used to, try changing the thermal paste.

The dust settled on the heat sink traps heat, and the cooling fan won’t be able to cool it down. Moreover, when the CPU cooling fan’s RPM also decreases when dust gets settled on its blades.

Once dust enters the compartments of the heat sink and the fan, it does a poor job of cooling down the PC. And as discussed above, the CPU will start to thermal throttle.

Use a can of compressed air to clean your CPU heat sink and the cooling fan.

Overclocking a CPU improves its clock speed and makes it run at a higher speed than originally intended. This will result in overall improved computer performance and increased FPS in games.

When you overclock your CPU, you simultaneously increase its clock speed, and voltage supplied to it until the system becomes unstable. Let’s call this an unstable point. Once it is unstable, it turns off. And now you set the clock speed and voltage below this unstable point.

If you have a higher-end CPU paired with poor-performing hardware components such as the RAM or the GPU, you will not be able to utilize the entire CPU’s performance. This is called a bottleneck.

When your CPU suffers from a bottleneck, it cannot reach its potential due to poor-performing hardware components. Upgrading these components will make your CPU perform better if it suffers from a bottleneck.
