Suggested December 2023 How To Conduct A Quality Score Audit

First, let’s quickly review…

What factors into the quality score calculation

Ad history

Landing page relevance

Landing page speed

This is a simplistic view; in reality, there are lots of factors that influence the quality score calculation and you can read more about them in this more comprehensive post.

How to improve quality score

Here’s a quick guide to get you started.

Separate the good from the bad. Start with the hatchet, and then we’ll use the scalpel. Set up a filter using AdWords Editor for all keywords with QS < 7. Cut all of those keywords and put them in a separate campaign(s).

You also want to isolate the QS < 7 keywords in order to troubleshoot them.

Figure out why the QS is poor. Bad QS indicates poor relevance. Luckily, Google helps you troubleshoot this, at least in broad strokes, if you mouse over the little speech bubble in the “Status” column when looking at the “Keywords” view.

It can also be useful to try the diagnostic tool (the “Ad Preview and Diagnosis” link shown above). In the case above, though, there are no clear issues with the QS. It’s just that the keyword / ad combo isn’t all that fantastic when compared against others for this search term. The thing to do in this case is, well, see point “a” below.

Here are a few common reasons your QS sucks:

This is a controversial one, but Google account teams have confirmed it to me in the past: you’re simply not bidding enough. If you’re in a competitive space and your bid is leaving you with a poor average position (5-8, let’s say), your position results in a poor CTR and that poor CTR impacts your QS. Harsh but true.

Raise your CTR. Sounds easy enough. How?

Make your ad copy laser-targeted. How to write good AdWords ad copy is a whole other beast, but at minimum, know that you need to say what you’re offering in the ad headline, match it to the specific words the user searched, repeat those words throughout the ad (but don’t overdo it – the ad needs to read like it makes sense or you’ll lose credibility), and capitalize the first letter of each word, excluding prepositions, conjunctions, etc.

Try this exercise. Google one of your top keywords and take a look at what competitors’ ad copy focuses on. Check out the search I conducted below to buy herbal tea online.

The bottom line

If you adhere to guidelines from the “layman’s 30-minute SEM audit,” develop single-keyword adgroups and maximize traffic coming from exact match keywords – that often covers half the battle when it comes to quality score optimization.

Feel free to drop me a line if you have any questions.

How To Conduct Quick & Thorough Page Speed Audits

Are slow page speeds hurting your Google search rankings? Conducting page speed audits will help you find out.

But where do you start?

Here are three tools you can use to do quick and thorough page speed audits to help your page speed optimization efforts.

Google Chrome’s Developer Tools

The types of insights you can get from this tool are invaluable and can give you a good idea of where and what the problem areas are on your website.

Here are some tips for when you run your tests:

Disable cache: This allows you to mimic the experience of a brand new visitor. Since new visitors will have to download all your assets in order to cache it, this gives you a view of where your site stands in terms of load speed.

In this desktop experience example, I have checked ‘Disable cache’ and selected ‘Capture screenshots’. I can begin a basic page load speed audit from this point, all in one convenient place.

Follow the instructions to reload the page with the inspector tool; if you’re using Windows, it’s F5, and if you are using Mac, it’s CMD-R.

What happens now is your web page will load, capture screenshots, and create a waterfall chart of how your page is loading each resource and in what order. Excellent!

There is a lot of info to process now and we will dive into common problems you will probably experience as you do more of these.

Server requests

Bytes transferred

Finish time

DOMContentLoaded

Load Time

The great thing about this tool is that it comes with a few more toggles. These toggles allow you to filter the resources loaded on the page. This is just an example, but for relatively larger sites that use a lot of imagery, they tend to be slowed down due to a lack of compressed images or just the quantity of images, in general, making up the majority of server requests on the page.

With Chrome Developer Tools, you can actually quantify how much space those specific elements are occupying and make a clear judgment on where to shave off the fat on your site.

For this site, I have toggled to images and can see that the images for this page makes up 29/33 server requests for this page and contributes to 3.2/3.6MB of its total page weight. So an obvious place to start here would be to compress the images or consider even removing some images if we want to improve page speed performance.

To get the full information about how to get the most out of this tool, check out Google’s document about Measuring Resource Loading and see how this tool can better help you get the insights you need.

Google’s Page Speed Test

We can use Google’s Page Speed Test as a good place to start figuring out the exact problems Google thinks is negatively affecting our page load times.

As you can see, there are a lot of areas for improvement identified by Google.

The score for this page is 54/100 — definitely not ideal. We see recommendations that include:

Enable compression

Optimize images

Leverage browser caching

Eliminate render-blocking JavaScript and CSS in above-the-fold content

Minify JavaScript

You can dive deeper into every recommendation and learn more about how to optimize your website’s speed from Google’s developer documents.

GT Metrix for Actionable Steps

Another great tool for doing some quick page analysis is GT Metrix. GT Metrix grades your page based on Google’s Page Speed Tests and YSlow criteria, but the recommendations are more detailed and all in one place – helpful for a quick audit.

For example, Google will tell you how much space you can save if you compressed these images, but they won’t give you a compressed version of the image, they don’t tell you exactly how to optimize those images, or the exact dimensions you need to scale down to.

Thankfully, the GT Metrix reports are more detailed and actionable.

GT Metrix provides the following information that many other tools will not provide, including:

JavaScript redirect chains

Optimized images to download

Exact Image Dimensions for Scaling

For serving scaled images, we can see what is happening to some of the images on the page that are taking some time to resize before they are loaded. We can resize the images to the exact size needed using a photo editing tool like Photoshop or a free tool like Bulk Resize Photos and upload them back on our site to fix this issue.

Closing Thoughts

Tackling page speed can be overwhelming, especially if you don’t have much technical background in development.

It’s important to understand where the problem areas are with the code and get it into the hands of a developer who can work with you to improve the overall performance of the site.

As an SEO, you should make page speed a top priority. In addition to being a ranking factor, fast page speeds result in a better mobile user experience.

People want and expect fast mobile sites. Make sure your pages are up to speed.

How Air Quality Tweets Are Saving Lives

Air pollution contributes to one in nine premature deaths worldwide, but this research shows how real-time monitoring can help reduce the danger. Key Takeaways

US embassies now tweet live air quality readings in 38 non-OECD countries worldwide

Sharing real-time air quality information yielded an average reduction in fine particulate concentration levels of 2-4 micrograms per cubic metre each year

Fine particulate matter is an air pollutant that can cause serious health problems such as heart disease and reduced lung function

Researchers estimate the reduction in air pollution for the median city was worth an annual $171 million in health benefits

Knowing how much pollution is in the air through Twitter notifications is saving lives around the world.

Real-time air quality readings in developing countries helped reduce air pollution and led to lower death rates, according to research co-led by the University of Queensland.

“In 2008, the US Embassy in Beijing began tweeting hourly air quality information from a new pollution monitor, which dramatically increased attention on air pollution in China,” says Dr Andrea La Nauze, from UQ’s School of Economics.

“US embassies now tweet live air quality readings in 38 non-OECD countries worldwide.

“We looked at 36 of those countries and found the sharing of real-time data increased local public interest in air quality and led to reduced air pollution levels.”

The researchers used air pollution measurements taken from satellite data to evaluate levels before and after the US embassy in a city began tweeting air quality readings and compared the results with other non-OECD cities without embassy monitors.

Sharing real-time air quality information yielded an average reduction in fine particulate concentration levels of 2-4 micrograms per cubic metre each year.

Fine particulate matter is an air pollutant that can cause serious health problems such as heart disease and reduced lung function.

The researchers estimate the reduction in air pollution for the median city was worth an annual $171 million in health benefits.

The project was run in conjunction with Carnegie Mellon University in the US.

Dr Akshaya Jha from Carnegie Mellon University says 90% of the global population is exposed to hazardous levels of air pollution, but monitoring – especially in developing countries – isn’t always available.

“Poor air quality is a leading cause of premature death worldwide, responsible for one out of every nine deaths,” Dr Jha says.

“Sharing credible air quality information can highlight this issue and have huge health and economic benefits that far outweigh the costs of the monitoring technology.”

La Nauze says the World Health Organization last year found the state of air quality monitoring to be “inadequate”, particularly in less developed countries.

“Around 30% of countries had at least some form of monitoring by 2023, but that includes monitoring that is intermittent, only covers a small part of the country or isn’t available publicly,” La Nauze says.

“Even Australia – where state governments monitor air quality and provide access to real-time data – could benefit substantially from a denser monitoring network.

“Policymakers, diplomats and community organisations worldwide should push for the rapid deployment of credible, real-time air quality monitoring and reporting.”

The research has been published in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences.

The Google Photos web app provides 15 GB of free storage space for your favorite photographs and images. With this app, you can edit photographs and set up slideshow albums for them.

Google Photos includes two alternative upload options for photos. And this can confuse some people.

You can select an Original or High Quality setting for uploading images.

If you’re wondering what the difference is between those settings, you’ve come to the right page!

High quality vs. Original Google Photo upload options What’s the difference between the Original and High Quality upload settings?

The primary difference between the two upload options is that the High Quality setting compresses photographs. Selecting that option can reduce both the resolution and file size of uploaded photos and videos.

In contrast, the Original option doesn’t compress snapshots. Thus, uploading them with that setting will ensure they are saved with their original resolutions.

What should I choose to preserve the original picture quality?

The Original setting is certainly the best for preserving original picture quality as no compression is applied to photos or videos. That’s especially the case for photos that eclipse 16 MP as the High Quality option will reduce them to exactly a 16 MP resolution.

Selecting High Quality won’t have so much impact on lower resolution images. However, photos with resolutions less than 16 MP might still be scaled down when uploaded to Google Photos with this option selected.

What’s the best option to select for saving storage space in Google Photos?

High Quality is the best option for saving storage space in Google Photos. Its compression will always reduce the file size of photographs uploaded to Google Photos

High quality is even better for saving storage space as it comes with unlimited with free storage. That means photographs and videos uploaded with that setting selected won’t consume any of your Google Photos storage space at all.

In that respect, the High Quality image compression might seem a little pointless.

However, remember that your image files will still be the same reduced file size when you download them to your hard drive.

How can I change the photo upload setting in Photos?

Open Google Photos in your browser.

Select the High Quality or Original radio button.

So, select the Original option if you need to retain the original picture quality of your photos and photos.

The High quality setting will impact picture quality primarily by reducing image resolutions, but it will save you a lot of storage space in Google Photos.
