Suggested April 2024 How To Conduct Quick & Thorough Page Speed Audits

Are slow page speeds hurting your Google search rankings? Conducting page speed audits will help you find out.

But where do you start?

Here are three tools you can use to do quick and thorough page speed audits to help your page speed optimization efforts.

Google Chrome’s Developer Tools

The types of insights you can get from this tool are invaluable and can give you a good idea of where and what the problem areas are on your website.

Here are some tips for when you run your tests:

Disable cache: This allows you to mimic the experience of a brand new visitor. Since new visitors will have to download all your assets in order to cache it, this gives you a view of where your site stands in terms of load speed.

In this desktop experience example, I have checked ‘Disable cache’ and selected ‘Capture screenshots’. I can begin a basic page load speed audit from this point, all in one convenient place.

Follow the instructions to reload the page with the inspector tool; if you’re using Windows, it’s F5, and if you are using Mac, it’s CMD-R.

What happens now is your web page will load, capture screenshots, and create a waterfall chart of how your page is loading each resource and in what order. Excellent!

There is a lot of info to process now and we will dive into common problems you will probably experience as you do more of these.

Server requests

Bytes transferred

Finish time

DOMContentLoaded

Load Time

The great thing about this tool is that it comes with a few more toggles. These toggles allow you to filter the resources loaded on the page. This is just an example, but for relatively larger sites that use a lot of imagery, they tend to be slowed down due to a lack of compressed images or just the quantity of images, in general, making up the majority of server requests on the page.

With Chrome Developer Tools, you can actually quantify how much space those specific elements are occupying and make a clear judgment on where to shave off the fat on your site.

For this site, I have toggled to images and can see that the images for this page makes up 29/33 server requests for this page and contributes to 3.2/3.6MB of its total page weight. So an obvious place to start here would be to compress the images or consider even removing some images if we want to improve page speed performance.

To get the full information about how to get the most out of this tool, check out Google’s document about Measuring Resource Loading and see how this tool can better help you get the insights you need.

Google’s Page Speed Test

We can use Google’s Page Speed Test as a good place to start figuring out the exact problems Google thinks is negatively affecting our page load times.

As you can see, there are a lot of areas for improvement identified by Google.

The score for this page is 54/100 — definitely not ideal. We see recommendations that include:

Enable compression

Optimize images

Leverage browser caching

Eliminate render-blocking JavaScript and CSS in above-the-fold content

Minify JavaScript

You can dive deeper into every recommendation and learn more about how to optimize your website’s speed from Google’s developer documents.

GT Metrix for Actionable Steps

Another great tool for doing some quick page analysis is GT Metrix. GT Metrix grades your page based on Google’s Page Speed Tests and YSlow criteria, but the recommendations are more detailed and all in one place – helpful for a quick audit.

For example, Google will tell you how much space you can save if you compressed these images, but they won’t give you a compressed version of the image, they don’t tell you exactly how to optimize those images, or the exact dimensions you need to scale down to.

Thankfully, the GT Metrix reports are more detailed and actionable.

GT Metrix provides the following information that many other tools will not provide, including:

JavaScript redirect chains

Optimized images to download

Exact Image Dimensions for Scaling

For serving scaled images, we can see what is happening to some of the images on the page that are taking some time to resize before they are loaded. We can resize the images to the exact size needed using a photo editing tool like Photoshop or a free tool like Bulk Resize Photos and upload them back on our site to fix this issue.

Closing Thoughts

Tackling page speed can be overwhelming, especially if you don’t have much technical background in development.

It’s important to understand where the problem areas are with the code and get it into the hands of a developer who can work with you to improve the overall performance of the site.

As an SEO, you should make page speed a top priority. In addition to being a ranking factor, fast page speeds result in a better mobile user experience.

People want and expect fast mobile sites. Make sure your pages are up to speed.

How To Conduct A Quality Score Audit

First, let’s quickly review…

What factors into the quality score calculation

Ad history

Landing page relevance

Landing page speed

This is a simplistic view; in reality, there are lots of factors that influence the quality score calculation and you can read more about them in this more comprehensive post.

How to improve quality score

Here’s a quick guide to get you started.

Separate the good from the bad. Start with the hatchet, and then we’ll use the scalpel. Set up a filter using AdWords Editor for all keywords with QS < 7. Cut all of those keywords and put them in a separate campaign(s).

You also want to isolate the QS < 7 keywords in order to troubleshoot them.

Figure out why the QS is poor. Bad QS indicates poor relevance. Luckily, Google helps you troubleshoot this, at least in broad strokes, if you mouse over the little speech bubble in the “Status” column when looking at the “Keywords” view.

It can also be useful to try the diagnostic tool (the “Ad Preview and Diagnosis” link shown above). In the case above, though, there are no clear issues with the QS. It’s just that the keyword / ad combo isn’t all that fantastic when compared against others for this search term. The thing to do in this case is, well, see point “a” below.

Here are a few common reasons your QS sucks:

This is a controversial one, but Google account teams have confirmed it to me in the past: you’re simply not bidding enough. If you’re in a competitive space and your bid is leaving you with a poor average position (5-8, let’s say), your position results in a poor CTR and that poor CTR impacts your QS. Harsh but true.

Raise your CTR. Sounds easy enough. How?

Make your ad copy laser-targeted. How to write good AdWords ad copy is a whole other beast, but at minimum, know that you need to say what you’re offering in the ad headline, match it to the specific words the user searched, repeat those words throughout the ad (but don’t overdo it – the ad needs to read like it makes sense or you’ll lose credibility), and capitalize the first letter of each word, excluding prepositions, conjunctions, etc.

Try this exercise. Google one of your top keywords and take a look at what competitors’ ad copy focuses on. Check out the search I conducted below to buy herbal tea online.

The bottom line

If you adhere to guidelines from the “layman’s 30-minute SEM audit,” develop single-keyword adgroups and maximize traffic coming from exact match keywords – that often covers half the battle when it comes to quality score optimization.

Feel free to drop me a line if you have any questions.

How To Use Quick Launch Toolbar In Windows 11

If you want to use the Quick Launch Toolbar on Windows 11 computer, then this post is sure to help you. Quick launch toolbar (or Quick access toolbar or Taskbar toolbar) helps to access or launch frequently used programs, files, folders, desktop, links, etc., from the taskbar (just before the system tray). In Windows 10, this is a native feature and you can easily create a custom toolbar to access a folder, program, etc. But, this functionality is removed in Windows 11 OS. Still, it is possible to create and add a taskbar toolbar of your choice that lets you access programs, folders, and files from the system tray of Windows 11.

While natively it is not possible to use a taskbar toolbar in Windows 11, this can be done using a free tool named TrayToolbar. Its system tray icon lets you access programs or items added to the quick launch toolbar created by you. You can see an example of a custom toolbar added to Windows 11 in the image above.

How to use Quick Launch Toolbar in Windows 11

Use the following steps to use the quick launch toolbar on a Windows 11 computer:

Extract the ZIP archive into a folder

Run the TrayToolbar application file from the extracted folder. This tool will start running in the system tray. Microsoft Windows Desktop Runtime is needed to run this tool. If it is already installed on your computer, then you can use this tool directly. Otherwise, this tool will prompt you to download and install it

In the Options box, there is a Path field. In that field, provide a path where your frequently used program shortcuts are stored. Or else, you can first create a folder on the desktop or somewhere else, add shortcuts, files, and folders in that parent folder, and then provide the path of that parent folder. That will be more helpful to quickly access all the needed items

Just below the Path field, a Depth field is present that lets you set scan depth for the nested folder. The explanation of this option is not clear and you might not get what this option is used for, but as per the developer, it is recommended that the depth value should not be greater than 5

An Icon option is also present below the Depth field. You can toggle this option to show/hide icons for files that will be visible when you will access your quick launch toolbar

When Options are set, close that box

Re-launch the tool by running its application file

So, that is how you can configure this tool and use a quick launch toolbar on your Windows 11 computer.

This tool is not a replacement for the original quick launch toolbar feature because it doesn’t let you create multiple custom toolbars and it may not show all the items from the Programs folder. However, since Windows 11 don’t have this feature or it might not come ever, you can have the similar functionality of that feature using this tool.

Is Quick Launch available in Windows 11?

No, the quick launch feature that helps to add and access commonly used programs/folders from the taskbar is not available in Windows 11. This feature is available in Windows 10 OS. And, there is no news if Microsoft will bring back or add a similar feature in Windows 11. If you want to access frequently used programs or applications from the taskbar, then all you can do is pin those programs to the taskbar. This is the only native feature that lets you open your favorite or frequent programs from the taskbar.

How do I get the quick access toolbar in Windows 11?

Quick access toolbar or quick launch toolbar is not a part of Windows 11 OS. Still, if you want to use a custom taskbar toolbar in Windows 11, then you can use a free and third-party tool called TrayToolbar. This tiny tool provides functionality similar to the quick launch toolbar. You can provide a path to a folder that includes program shortcuts, files, sub-folders, etc., and then access all those items from the taskbar with the help of this tool. We have explained everything related to this tool in the post above.

Hope it is helpful.

Iphone Cellular Update Failed? Quick Ways To Fix It!

The ‘Cellular Update Failed’ error was first noticed on iPhone 7, and a few other models followed suit. This error prompted a ‘No Service’ message at the iPhone screen’s upper right corner, replacing the network bars. Thus, preventing you from making or receiving calls on your iPhone. Undoubtedly, this sparked a thread on the Apple discussion platform.

If you are facing this ‘Cellular Update Failed’ error on your iPhone running iOS 14, here are a few quick fixes.

There can only be two possible reasons behind the error.

Hardware issues: This includes concerns related to the Sim card placement in the tray. It might have been misplaced due to a fall, or something might be hindering connectivity.

Software issues: Some of your settings or a recent network upgrade can cause this error.

Don’t worry! There are basic troubleshooting actions we can perform.

Solution 1. Switch Airplane mode on and off on iPhone

There are two ways to do this;

Go to the Control Center.

Tap the airplane icon to enter Airplane mode.

Tap again to exit after some time.

Another way is to Go to the Settings app, toggle on the Airplane mode. Turn off after waiting for some time.

Repeat this a couple of times and see if it solves the error. If not, try another method.

Solution 2. Toggle cellular data on and off

This one again can be accessed from both the Settings app and Control Center. Here’s how to do it.

In the Control Center, tap the icon next to airplane mode to turn it off. Please wait for some time and tap to turn it on.

In the Settings app, tap Mobile Data. Turn the toggle on and off at little intervals.

Repeat the process a couple of times and see if it helps. If it doesn’t, let’s try another method.

By releasing updates, companies provide bug fixes to several errors. Hence, it is vital to keep your device updated always. Let’s see how to check the iOS and carrier settings update.

iOS update

In the Settings app, tap General.

Tap Software Update.

Tap download and install if an update is available.

Carrier update settings on iPhone

In the Settings app, tap General.

Go to the About Section.

If there’s any pending update, a pop-up will appear on the screen.

Carrier settings are a bridge that connects your iPhone with the seamless cellular network. Since each carrier service provider has its distinct settings, you might want to visit our guide to update carrier settings.

Solution 4. Reinsert your sim card on iPhone

Before you perform this, it is recommended you turn off your iPhone. Take the card tray out, and reinsert after waiting for five minutes.

Solution 5. Reset network settings on iPhone

In the Settings app, tap General.

Scroll to the bottom and tap Reset.

Tap ‘Reset Network Settings.’ Tap again when prompted to confirm.

I hope one of the ways mentioned above helped you fix the ‘Cellular Update Failed’ error on your iPhone. If nothing worked, I would recommend visiting the Apple Care center, as there could be some other hardware issue, or connect with your network provider to find a solution.
