How To Personalize Your Home Screen On Android

Android is an obvious choice for people who don’t want the kind of top-down control you get from companies like Apple, where everything is prefabricated to fit into a specific brand identity instead of catering to a user’s specific needs and preferences. Google’s open source software, fortunately, provides plenty of room for developers to customize your OS experience. But that freedom also trickles down to you, meaning you can further personalize your home screen just how you like it.

Personalize your home screen: The basics

There are some simple customizations to personalize your home screen on Android that don’t require that you download any new apps.

First, and most obvious, is the wallpaper you use as a background. You can opt for one of the bundled wallpapers, download some new ones or use your own existing photos.

How to change your wallpaper on Android:

Tap and hold a blank space on your home screen.

Tap on “Wallpapers” at the bottom of the screen.

Choose from the existing wallpapers or use one of your own photos.

Once you’ve made your selection, tap on “Set wallpaper.”

Select whether you want that image as your home screen, lock screen, or both.

Repeat the process if you want different images on your home and lock screen.

Tap and hold an app’s icon.

Drag the app icon you want to hide into one of two places:

The app drawer (represented by an icon in the center-bottom of the screen).

Or to the “x” at the top of the screen labeled “Remove.”

If you want to uninstall the app completely you should see “Uninstall” next to “Remove” at the top of the screen – simply drag the app icon there instead.

How to add app shortcuts to your home screen:

First, open the app drawer.

Tap and hold the app you want and drag it upwards onto your home screen.

Drop it where you want it, and tap and hold to drag it to a different location.

Drag and hold it near the edge of the screen to be taken to the next page.

How to create an app folder:

You can also create app groups on your home screen by combining similar apps into categories, each of which will have its own quick-access folder:

Tap and hold an app

Drag it on top of another app and release.

The two apps should be merged into a shared folder.

Drag any other appropriate apps into the folder.

Tap the folder to open it and rearrange the app order by tap, hold and drag.

Rename the folder to something like “Social,” “Messaging,” “Games,” or whatever.

How to add/remove widgets:

You can also decide which widgets to have on your home screen. The process is almost identical to moving apps on and off your home screen:

Tap and hold a blank space on your home screen.

Tap on “Widgets “at the bottom of the screen.

Pick the widget you want on your home screen.

Tap and hold it.

Drag it to the position you’d like on your Android home screen.

Personalize your home screen: Get a new launcher

Beyond tweaking your home screen using what’s already on your phone, you can also download entirely new launchers, that will change the layout and functionality of your home screen itself. Launchers change the look, feel and behavior of even more parts of the Android OS, allowing you to make it truly your own.

Launchers also let you change your icons, helping you personalize your home screen to affect even the branding of third-party apps. Many launchers support gesture shortcuts and navigation, offer many more widgets and transition effects and can even learn your habits and adapt themselves to your needs throughout the day.

Custom Android launchers worth checking out include:

Nova Launcher

Action Launcher

Evie Launcher (no longer available)

Apex Launcher

Hola Launcher (no longer available)

Here are some other great options

Have a look at a few launchers and see which fit your personality best. Once you’ve found one you like the look of, install the app, open it and press the Home button. You should see a notification about changing your default launcher. Simply change your default to the new launcher. If you want to change back (or you don’t see the pop-up), go to your Settings and search for “launcher” – you should be able to find the right menu easily enough, then just select the one you want from the list of installed launchers to make it your new default.

How To Use Samsung Dex On Galaxy Z Fold 4

There are some that might say that there’s not much in the way of software innovation when it comes to Android and iOS. And in some ways, we would agree with that, as evidenced by Apple being late to the party with its Lock Screen customization options in iOS 16.

But in other ways, we would argue against that point, as there are some smartphone manufacturers that are implementing unique ways to interact with your phone. One example of this is the Galaxy Z Fold 4, which can be used as a traditional “candy bar” smartphone, or unfolded to provide a 7.6-inch tablet. But did you know that there’s a way for you to use your Galaxy Z Fold 4 as your computer?

What Is Samsung DeX?

Samsung DeX is one of those features that Samsung doesn’t really highlight whenever it announces a new consumer-grade device. However, this feature has been around since the release of the Galaxy S8, and offers an incredibly unique experience for those who have access to it.

When enabled, Samsung DeX transforms your phone or tablet into a desktop-like experience. In the case of the Galaxy Tab S8 lineup, you can activate and use DeX right from the tablet itself without needing any other devices. However, when trying to use Samsung DeX on the Galaxy Z Fold 4 or other Galaxy phones, you’ll need an external display of some sort.

Many of the best applications from the Google Play Store and Samsung Galaxy Store are already optimized to work flawlessly with Samsung DeX. This includes Microsoft’s suite of Office apps, but also includes many other popular applications that you likely already have installed. With this in mind, you’ll be able to truly use a single device for everything from just using your phone as a phone, unfolding it into a tablet, or using it as a portable productivity machine.

How to Use Samsung DeX on Galaxy Z Fold 4

Perhaps the best part about being able to use Samsung DeX on the Galaxy Z Fold 4 is that you don’t need to download or install anything. Instead, this feature is built right into your phone, making it extremely easy to get up and running with DeX. As we’ll touch on later, there are different ways to use Samsung DeX, but here’s how you can do so with a wireless or Miracast-enabled display:

Unlock your Galaxy Z Fold 4 to the Home Screen.

Swipe down twice to reveal the Quick Settings panel. You can also swipe down on the Home Screen with two fingers at the same time.

Locate and tap the DeX button.

If connecting wirelessly, select your TV or wireless display from the list of devices.

When prompted, tap the Start now button.

After a few moments, you should see an all-new interface appear on your TV or wireless display. It will look more like what you are accustomed to if you use a traditional computer, complete with a dock and desktop icons. You can also go through and rearrange the look and feel, including the ability to pin other apps to the dock.

Something you might have noticed in the steps above is that we didn’t say anything about using Samsung DeX on the Galaxy Z Fold 4 when physically connected to a display. That’s simply because the only step you need to take in that regard is connecting your Galaxy Z Fold 4 to the display using a USB-C to HDMI cable. You can also plug your phone into a USB-C hub, provided that it has support for Display Out. And just as is the case when connecting wirelessly, Samsung DeX will immediately appear on the screen.

Use a Bluetooth Keyboard and Mouse For the Best Experience

No matter what option you choose to use Samsung DeX on the Galaxy Z Fold 4, your phone itself will turn into a trackpad for navigation. And when you find yourself needing to input text, a virtual keyboard will appear, allowing you to type out your message or search for something.

This works just fine in a pinch, but if you’re trying to use your Galaxy Z Fold 4 as a dedicated productivity device, it’s not ideal. That’s why we highly recommend pairing a Bluetooth keyboard and mouse with your Galaxy Z Fold 4.

Put your Bluetooth mouse and keyboard in pairing mode.

Open the Settings app on your Galaxy Z Fold 4.

In the left side panel, tap Connections.

On the right side, tap Bluetooth.

Select your keyboard from the list of Available Devices.

If prompted, type in the verification code.

Repeat the steps if you need to pair a Bluetooth mouse.

Pairing a Bluetooth keyboard and mouse will truly give the desktop-like experience you expect, without needing to rely on your phone’s touchscreen. There are even some Bluetooth keyboards that have a built-in trackpad, removing the need to pair (and remember to carry) two extra accessories with you.

How To Use Your Friend’s Iphone To Find Your Lost Apple Device

Find My app on iPhone, iPad, Mac, and iCloud lets you locate your missing Apple devices, things attached to AirTag, and third-party supported accessories. When you misplace one of your devices, you can use it on your other device or chúng tôi to locate it. But what happens when you own only one Apple device and, for some reason, cannot use iCloud? In these situations, here’s how to find your missing, lost, or stolen device using your friend’s iPhone or iPad.

When you sign in to iCloud on an untrusted computer, it may ask you to enter a verification code sent to your online, trusted devices. Now, if you have only one Apple device, and that is lost, you will have a tough time logging into iCloud web from an untrusted computer to use Find My.

However, in our testing, we found that Apple does not ask you to enter the verification code when you follow the steps below to log in to use the Find My service on your friend’s iPhone. All you need is your Apple ID and its password.

How to locate your missing iPhone, iPad, Mac, or AirTag using the Find My app on your friend’s iPhone

Here are the quick steps for using your friend’s iPhone or iPad to find your lost device.

On your friend’s iPhone, open the Find My app.

Tap Me.

Scroll down and tap Help a Friend.

Log in using your Apple ID and password.

Tap your missing iPhone or another item.

From here, you can play sound, put your device in Lost Mode, or erase it.

Why play sound on the missing iPhone or other Apple device?

Playing sound can help locate a friend’s iPhone even when it is set to silent mode or Do Not Disturb. So, if the device is under cushions or somewhere in the house, the sound can be useful.

Plus, this alert plays for a while and gets louder gradually. The thief cannot disable it until they unlock your iPhone (which they can’t as they do not have your password). So, if the thief is in a public place, this sound may scare him, forcing him to leave the device in panic and run away.

Why put your iPhone, iPad, Apple Watch, Mac, or AirTags in Lost Mode?

After you tap Lost Mode and follow the next few steps, you mark your device as lost.

In Lost Mode, you can display a message on the screen. This message can have your phone number, email, and details so that the finder can reach you to return your lost device. If you lost an item attached to AirTag, the finder can use their iPhone or NFC capable Android phone to contact you.

When an iPhone is put in Lost Mode, it’s locked, which protects your private on-device data. If you had no passcode on the iPhone, you would have to set one while putting the device in Lost Mode.

Lost Mode disables Apple Pay. It also removes payment cards added to Apple Pay, student ID cards, and Express Travel cards from the lost iPhone.

Devices marked as lost do not show notification alerts or play a sound when they get a message or other notification. However, they can still receive regular and FaceTime calls.

When a device is in Lost Mode, you see its changing location on the map inside Find My. This helps you monitor the missing device’s updated positions. If you complain to law enforcement, this can help them as well.

Lost Mode also puts your iPhone in Low Power Mode. This ensures its battery lasts a bit longer, giving you more time to keep track of its location.

Once you find the lost iPhone, enter its passcode to turn off Lost Mode. You may also do this from Find My.

What happens when you remotely erase your missing iPhone or other Apple device?

After you tap Erase iPhone and follow the steps, it removes all the data on your lost device. You can no longer track the location of this device. Remotely erasing your iPhone via Find My is the last resort. You should do this only when you have lost all hope (and desire) of finding your missing device.

Related: What to do if your iPhone is lost or stolen

Please know that if you are entitled to AppleCare+ with Theft and Loss, wait for your claim to be approved before you erase your iPhone. You can file a claim for device replacement here.

At last, do not forget to remove your missing Apple device as a trusted device in your Apple ID settings.

Need more help?

This is how you can use a friend’s iPhone or iPad to find your missing Apple devices. I hope this guide was helpful.

If you need more assistance in finding your device, contact your carrier, Apple Support, insurance company (if you have one), and local law enforcement. In any case, do not enter your IMEI, Apple ID, etc., on random websites claiming to help you locate your missing device.

How To Unlock The Bootloader Of Your Nexus Device

All the Android devices out there usually ship with a locked bootloader to prevent users from messing up their devices. The intention behind this is to prevent less tech-savvy users from flashing some third-party apps that could brick the device. The good thing is most manufacturers do provide a way to unlock the bootloader in case you are not afraid of taking a risk. Once you have unlocked your bootloader, you can then flash custom recoveries, custom ROMs and do all sorts of tasks you cannot do on a device with a locked bootloader. The unlocking bootloader method varies with devices; the procedure below shows how to unlock Nexus devices’ bootloader.

Things You Should Know:

Unlocking your bootloader voids your warranty, so do it at your own risk.

The procedure below only works on Windows based PCs. It may work on other OSes, but for that you will have to make some modifications in the commands.

It is possible to relock your bootloader in case you ever want to do that.

This procedure will wipe off all the data stored on your device. Make sure to first make a backup before jumping in.

Unlocking the Nexus Devices’ Bootloader:

In order to unlock your bootloader, you will need a tool called Fastboot. It helps make interaction between your PC and your device possible. Download it and extract files from it to any folder on your PC, preferably on the root of any drive on your PC.

1. The first step is to enable “Developer options” on your device.

2. Then head back to Settings and tap on “Developer options.” Look for the option that says “USB debugging.” Tap on it and it will be enabled.

3. Connect your Nexus device to your PC using a compatible cable.

5. A command prompt window should appear with your current directory as working directory. Just type the following command into it and press ENTER. It will reboot your device into bootloader mode:

6. When a big Android logo appears on your device’s screen, issue the following command. It is for unlocking the booloader of your device.

7. As soon as you issue the above command, a prompt will appear on your device. Tap on “Yes” and it will erase all the data stored on your device and unlock your bootloader.

Congratulations. Your Nexus device’s booloader is now unlocked. You are now free to root your device, install a custom recovery, flash custom ROMs and so on. The sky is the limit!

The choice to unlock the bootloader given by the manufacturers is awesome as it lets fearless users like us tinker with our devices the way we want. It really helps unveil the true power that lies within the device.

How To Add Chrome Password Manager To Home Screen

There are a lot of different password managers out there, ranging from the excellent (1Password) to the not-so-great (LastPass). But did you know that Google has been consistently improving the password manager built into Google Chrome?

Adding the Chrome Password Manager to the home screen enhances convenience and accessibility. Users can quickly retrieve their passwords whenever needed, whether for logging into websites, accessing online accounts, or filling out forms. This eliminates the hassle of memorizing multiple complex passwords or relying on insecure methods for password storage, such as writing them down on physical paper or using easily guessable passwords.

How to Add Chrome Password Manager to Home Screen on Android

Having quick access to the Chrome Password Manager on the home screen saves time and effort. Users can easily launch the password manager with a single tap, eliminating the need to navigate multiple menus or settings to access their stored passwords.

Open the Google Chrome app on your Android phone.

Tap the three vertical dots in the top right corner.

From the drop-down menu, tap Settings.

Tap the Add shortcut button near the top of the page.

When prompted, tap the Add to home screen button in the bottom right corner.

After a moment, you’ll be taken to the Home Screen page, where the Password Manager widget was added. As a note, if you are signed into multiple Google accounts on your Android phone, you’ll be prompted to select which account you want to view the passwords for.

How to Use Chrome Password Manager on iPhone

Unfortunately, those who want to add Chrome Password Manager to their iPhone Home Screen don’t have the same luxury as Android users. However, not all hope is lost, as you can still use the service to autofill your passwords from your iPhone.

Open the Settings app on your iPhone or iPad.

Scroll down and tap Passwords.

Authenticate using Face ID, Touch ID, or a Passcode.

Under the Allow Filling From section, tap Chrome.

From the AutoFill is on prompt, tap the Got it button at the bottom.

Now that you have enabled Chrome as a password manager on iPhone and iPad, it’s as easy as using iCloud Keychain. And here’s how you can use Chrome Password Manager on iPhone:

Open the app that you want to log into.

You can also navigate to a website where you have an account.

When the correct login screen appears, tap either the Username or Password sections.

In the toolbar above your keyboard, tap the Key icon.

From the Choose a saved password to use prompt, tap Chrome…

If this is your first time using Chrome as a Password Manager, tap OK when prompted to allow Chrome to use Face ID.

Tap the Sign In button, if applicable.

Upon initiating the process, you will receive a prompt to authenticate yourself using Face ID, Touch ID, or a passcode. Once this step is completed, you can utilize Chrome as your designated default password manager. Notably, any new accounts generated or stored using Chrome on your desktop will seamlessly synchronize with the mobile version.

Integrating the Chrome Password Manager into the home screen can improve overall digital security. By utilizing the password manager’s built-in security features, such as generating strong passwords and detecting potential breaches, users can enhance the protection of their online accounts against unauthorized access and data breaches.

In summary, adding the Password Manager to the home screen offers convenience, accessibility, improved password security, and encourages good password hygiene. It serves as a valuable tool for users to store, manage, and secure their passwords, making it a practical addition to their home screen.
