HP and Mirapoint are claiming record performance results for a messaging system combined with network storage.
The companies say the record-breaking architecture, which consists of an HP StorageWorks Disk Array xp128 and Mirapoint Message Server M4000, delivers SPECmail message capacity and performance of 1.25 million SPECmail users — nearly 25% higher than the previous record held by Sun Microsystems — and the ability to support roughly 17 million messages a day.
It is also the first SPEC benchmark result to be performed in a storage area network (SAN) environment, according to the firms. SPECmail is a standardized benchmark developed by messaging vendors and research organizations that measures mail server performance using a real-world workload.
With the breakthrough result, HP and Mirapoint claim their solution addresses the messaging and storage requirements of the largest mobile operators, service providers, and enterprises.
“Messaging is a mission-critical application for our customers that demands more system performance and reliability,” says Rusty Smith, director of StorageWorks Lifecycle Data Management for HP Network Storage Solutions. “As today’s benchmark proves, a messaging solution that harnesses the power and scalability of network storage can handle the most demanding message networks.”
Email is the number one application for business users and has surpassed Web usage in enterprise environments, according to IDC’s Internet Commerce Market Model, March 2002. With ever-increasing volumes of message traffic, coupled with the growth of multimedia content and expanding wireless connectivity, messaging has become a mission-critical and storage-intensive application for businesses.
“Service providers’ demands for carrier-grade messaging solutions are only going to grow with the increasing convergence of data, voice, and wireless networks,” asserts Lawrence Frank, vice president of market development for LogicaCMG. “For this reason, embedding Mirapoint’s messaging systems and HP’s open, modular network storage into our offering provides our customers with a strategic, high-performance platform to meet their needs today and growth plans for the future.”
The SPECmail benchmark was achieved on a SAN consisting of an HP StorageWorks xp128 disk array and Mirapoint Message Server M4000 products connected to a Fibre Channel SAN. HP StorageWorks management tools — including CommandView xp, LUN Configuration and Security Manager xp, and Business Copy xp — enabled control of the storage environment. The solution, powered by six HP ProLiant m1370 servers, sustained a volume of 6,250 SPECmail messages per minute, equivalent to 1.25 million SPECmail2001 users, or roughly 17 million real-world messages per day.
HP and Legato Offer Enterprise Email Archiving
Mirapoint isn’t the only company announcing a messaging partnership with HP this week.
HP and Legato Systems have expanded their partnership to include enterprise email archiving solutions for companies looking to route, store, manage, and retrieve electronic mail information, and to meet heightened regulatory requirements.
HP will resell Legato’s EmailXtender as part of a solution for data storage and retrieval for enterprise email. The EmailXtender family supports Microsoft Exchange/Outlook, Lotus Notes/Domino, Bloomberg Mail, and UNIX Sendmail, as well as instant messaging.
“Already faced with the daunting task of managing the explosive overflow of data due to the growth of instant messaging and email, IT departments now must rapidly adapt to meet strictly enforced regulations offering little room for error,” says IDC Research Manager Robert Mahowald. “HP and Legato can offer enterprises scalable, mature, proven solutions that leverage HP StorageWorks products and professional service capabilities, as well as Legato’s archiving technologies to meet customers’ email archiving needs.”
Sector, a subsidiary of the Securities Industry Automation Corporation (SIAC) and an HP Service Provider Partner, is working with both HP and Legato to help customers comply with new regulatory requirements. Sector provides services that manage the lifecycle of the archives from collection, indexing, and archiving to retrieval.

Know the Different Between Quality Writing and Effective Marketing
Many people think they compose well written and effective emails and letters. But strong writing and effective marketing are two different things.
It’s hard enough to get your targeted recipients to open your email or letter. A familiar sender name and a provocative subject line are your only two chances to get that to happen. But even those are wasted if your customers don’t read your message, and there’s a very good chance they won’t. Most readers decide whether or not to read an entire message in the few seconds it takes to read the first sentence of the first paragraph. Some may scan the bold headings to see if there’s a benefit to reading the whole thing, but generally, you need to hook them in with your first sentence. Let your readers know what value you can deliver to them right away.
Most people are taught to introduce themselves at the beginning of every email, letter or message of any kind. It’s considered “proper.” However, this doesn’t make for effective marketing messaging. Remember, it’s not about you. Who cares who you are? Who cares how grateful you are for the opportunity to propose this sale, or how much you appreciate the last meeting? Customers don’t need to hear all those things because it’s not what they value.
In the second paragraph, most people are taught to give evidence: “Here’s why I’m writing to you today” or “Here’s the value I propose to bring to your company.” Let that paragraph come first, as it illustrates your company’s value to the customer, which should always be conveyed right away.

Record Financial Year for University Bond rating agency Moody’s upgrades BU’s outlook

Boston University ended the last fiscal year with record operating reserves and a record sum of cash gifts from a record number of alumni. Those results cap a string of strong years that have in part led Moody’s Investors Service to revise BU’s rating outlook from “stable” to “positive.”
The University generated $157.5 million in operating reserves when fiscal 2023 closed June 30, a 12 percent increase over the previous year. Those funds support the academic mission of BU, with approximately $100 million earmarked to support physical plant renovations and expansion across the University, such as the Center for Integrated Life Sciences & Engineering and the new studio theater and production and education facility for the College of Fine Arts, says Derek Howe, BU’s vice president for budget and capital planning.
The remainder of these reserves are funds generated as part of revenue-sharing agreements with the University’s various schools and colleges and provide support to the academic and research mission of the University. Examples include upcoming initiatives such as the General Education program, the common core required of undergraduates across all academic programs, starting with the freshman class entering in 2023, Howe says.
“Fiscal 2014, 2023, 2023 were all record years for reinvestment into the University,” he says.
Martin Howard, senior vice president, chief financial officer, and treasurer, says BU’s financial health reflects the University’s growing reputation and increased interest on the part of student applicants—as witnessed by the growth and quality of the undergraduate applicant pool and the recent growth in graduate enrollments—as well as its fundraising and sponsored research funding (which mostly comes from the federal government). More than half of the University’s operating revenues is from net tuition and fees.
Sponsored research revenue totaled $307 million in fiscal year 2023, a small increase over the previous year. That’s noteworthy “in this extremely competitive environment for research funding,” Howard says. BU’s admission in 2012 to the Association of American Universities, a consortium of 62 leading public and private research universities, bolstered the University’s positioning for research support, he says.
Howe says that BU’s efforts at operating efficiently also played a part in its financial situation, adding, “We are always looking for continuous improvement.”
The University’s financial performance contrasts with that of many peers. “The trends at Boston University are more impressive in the context of stagnant or declining operating trends for many rated institutions of higher education,” says Howard.
Moody’s revised outlook for BU signals the potential for a credit rating upgrade if these financial trends continue. The credit rating measures an institution’s ability to repay borrowed capital; the higher the rating, the easier it is for the University to access debt capital at lower borrowing costs. BU’s current rating is A1. (Moody’s ratings range from Aaa to C, with numbers added within each grade for further differentiation.)
In revising its assessment of the University’s rating outlook, Moody’s report cited BU’s “improved ability to invest in strategic initiatives and grow financial reserves through strengthening cash flow, monetization of real estate, and fundraising combined with a moderate reduction of liquidity risks in its debt portfolio” while noting “its organizational culture of continuous improvement and benchmarking for driving operational efficiencies and strategic use of resources.”
On the fundraising front, BU enjoyed a record $157 million in cash gifts from more than 51,000 donors in fiscal 2023, says Scott Nichols, senior vice president for development and alumni relations. Nichols says fiscal 2023 is off to a hotter than usual start as well. The first quarter of every year, July through September, “is usually the worst of the year for us,” he says. Fundraising during the first quarter in recent years averaged $14 million. This year, he says, BU raised $35 million, with a big boost from two large gifts over the summer of $8 million and $10 million.
Since April 2010, all gifts to the University have been part of its comprehensive Campaign for BU, with a goal of $1.5 billion by its end in 2023. When the last fiscal year closed in June, $1.045 billion had been raised.
Nearly 300,000 gifts have been given to the campaign so far, including 167 gifts of $1 million or more. That exceeds the number of gifts that size given to BU between its founding in 1839 and the start of the campaign, Nichols says.
BU recently made the CASE 50, the list of the world’s top fundraising universities compiled by the Council for the Support and Advancement of Education. To crack the list, schools must meet several criteria, among them having had a $1 billion campaign. That was the University’s original goal, and when it was met in April, the Campaign for BU upped its target.

In this article, I want to share some of the practices of Performance Tuning configuration and queries, which I have found effective while using Hive.
First of all, let’s understand what are the steps for tuning the Hive queries:
In this step, we list all the Hive codes which consume more time.
We find out the best solutions without interfering with the functionality of the code and make sure that the code is improved.
Test and Deploy: We t
est the changed code and then deploy it in production. We should monitor the running time of the changed code for a few days.
In this step, we measure if the changed codes are improving at any time. Also, compare the new run timings of the changed code with the past production timings.
We keep looking for possible solutions to improve further.Types of Performance Tuning Techniques 1 Avoid locking of tables
It is extremely important to make sure that the tables are being used in any Hive query as sources are not being used by another process. This can lead to locking of the table and our query can be stuck for an unknown time.
We can use the parameters below for making sure that the tables are not being locked:set hive.support.concurrency=false; set hive.txn.manager=org.apache.hadoop.hive.ql.lockmgr.DummyTxnManager; set hive.bin.strict.locking.mode=false;
2 Use the Hive execution engine as TEZ
While executing Hive queries, TEZ execution engine is the preferred choice because it eliminates unnecessary disk access. It takes data from disk once, performs calculations, and produces output, thus saving us from multiple disk traversals. We can consider TEZ to be a much more flexible and powerful successor to the map-reduce framework.
We can set the parameter below for using TEZ engine:set hive.execution.engine=tez;
3 Use Hive Cost Based Optimizer (CBO)
Apache Hive provides a cost-based optimizer to improve performance. It generates efficient execution plans like how to order joins, which type of join to perform, the degree of parallelism etc. by examining the query cost. These decisions are collected by ANALYZE statements or the metastore itself, ultimately cutting down on query execution time and reducing resource utilization.
We can set the parameter using :set hive.cbo.enable=true;
Parallel execution at a Mapper & Reducer level
We can improve the performance of aggregations, filters, and joins of our hive queries by using vectorized query execution, which means scanning them in batches of 1024 rows at once instead of single row each time.
We should explore the below parameters which will help to bring in more parallelism and which significantly improves query execution time:set hive.vectorized.execution.enabled=true; set hive.exec.parallel=true;
For example:Select a.*, b.* from (select * from table1 ) a Join (select * from table2 ) b On a.id=b.id ;
As we can see the two subqueries are independent so this might increase efficiency.
One important thing to note is, parallel execution will increase cluster utilization. If the cluster utilization of a cluster is already very high, parallel execution will not help much.
5 Use STREAMTABLE option
When we are joining multiple tables, we can use STREAMTABLE option. By default, the right-most table gets streamed.
For example: If we are joining 2 tables ‘huge_table’ join ‘small_table’, by default ‘small_table’ gets streamed as it is the rightmost table. In this case, ‘huge_table’ , being the bigger table, will try to get buffered into memory and might cause java heap space issues or the job might run longer. In this case, what we can do is add /*+ STREAMTABLE(‘huge_table’) */ and it will make ‘huge_table’ to be streamed rather than coming into memory.
Hence, in this way, we can be free of remembering the order of joining tables.
6 Use Map Side JOIN Option
If one of the tables in the join is a small table and can be loaded into memory, we can force a MAPSIDE join like shown below:Select /*+ MAPJOIN(small_table) */ large_table.col1,large_table.col2 from large_table join small_table on large_table.col1 = small_table.col1;

Avoid Calculated Fields in JOIN and WHERE clause
We should avoid using any calculated fields in JOIN and WHERE clauses as they take a long time to run the Hive query. We can use CTE(Create table expression) to handle those functionalities and can optimize our queries.

8 Use SORT BY instead of ORDER BY
Hive supports both ORDER BY and SORT BY causes. ORDER BY works on a single reducer and it causes a performance bottleneck. But, SORT BY orders the data only within each reducer and performs a local ordering where each reducer’s output will be sorted ensuring better performance.
9 Select columns which are needed
While we are using Hive, If we need only a few columns from a table, avoid using SELECT * FROM as it adds unnecessary time to the execution.
10 Suitable Input format Selection
Using appropriate file formats on the basis of data can significantly increase our query performance. Hive comes with columnar input formats like RCFile, ORC, etc. On comparing to Text, Sequence, and RC file formats, ORC shows better performance because Hive has a vectorized ORC reader which allows reducing the read operations in analytics queries by allowing each column to be accessed individually.
11 Limit (Filter) the data as early as possible
This is the fundamental principle for any tuning where we filter or drop records ahead in the process so that we can avoid dealing with long-running of queries and dealing with unnecessary results.

12 Use Multi Query Inserts
Here we will have a common dataset (Superset) and then we will use that to insert into multiple tables based on specific conditions specified in the WHERE clause. This helps to load multiple tables in parallel when they have the common superset of data.
13 Modularize the code into logical pieces
This helps in terms of the maintenance of the code. Also helps in restarting the jobs in scenarios of failures. This can be used to achieve parallelism by running modules that are independent of each other thus saving time.Takeaway Notes
Use hive parameters judiciously
We should avoid using a lot of hive parameters if they are not needed. For this we should understand the data well and then use it efficiently else we might end up impacting the overall cluster utilization impacting other processes.
Identify the right targets
Most of these techniques will work on all jobs but spend the effort where it counts. Start with the jobs that will have the biggest impact on performance, that is the ones that take many hours!

Mesh messaging or off-the-grid messaging is a peer-to-peer networking system that allows users to contact each other without relying on the cell or WiFi networks, or any other government-controlled infrastructure.
The protests went on for weeks, prompting police to use violent and aggressive means to quash the efforts. Consequently, the protestors needed a way of communicating with one another without depending on an internet connection, so as to organize themselves and stay safe.
To do this, they used off-the-grid smartphone apps like FireChat and Bridgefy, which work by creating their own networks outside the internet and carrier cell masts. They rely mainly on the WiFi link or Bluetooth that exist between two or more phones.
Some of the ideal uses of mesh messaging include:
During disasters like earthquakes, floods, hurricanes, and fires among others
Jungle trekking or group camping in remote areas without reception
In a war zone or during mass protests where the government is likely to shut down the internet
When you don’t have mobile data on your phone or your plan expired

Mesh messaging sends data via Bluetooth or ad hoc WiFi similar to what your phone sets up when trying to get a home security camera or smart device online.
The system is structured in such a way that no one can monitor or control the conversations you’ve got going. This way, neither hackers nor government surveillance authorities can tap into cell towers to block the communication channels, pull down websites you’re trying to use to communicate with others, or even listen in on whatever is being beamed to your internet service provider.
Apps used for mesh messaging don’t need traditional online networks. Plus, they make connections between users in the same way torrenting software does, instead of sucking files from a central repository.
If you have a mesh messaging app installed on your smartphone, and many other people in the same area have the same app, it’s easier to pass on messages to each other the way a relay team would pass on a baton. However, the passing on is invisible to everyone sending the message to others so it’s not being read by other people as it moves along.
The main principle at work in mesh messaging is device-to-device communication. This makes use of short-range Bluetooth connections to form a network and bypass cell or WiFi networks, and any other government-controlled infrastructure.
The main purpose for mesh messaging isn’t necessarily to keep off the government radar, but to enable communication in areas with poor connectivity, or remote locations with no form of connectivity. It also comes handy during events in stadiums where many fans would interact with each other, or in places that have been ravaged by natural disasters like earthquakes and floods, which destroy cell towers and WiFi networks.
Mesh messaging apps use the mesh network to link users’ devices together via Bluetooth, allowing the message to move from one device to another until it lands on the intended person’s inbox.
Since Bluetooth’s phone to phone range typically maxes out at around 100 meters, it’s possible to communicate with other people within a range of up to 200 meters. It’s more effective when two or more phones are within range of each other, otherwise the signal strength is affected.
For longer distances though, your message will jump between the nearest user and creates a mesh network until it reaches the intended person. For example, phone A can’t connect directly to phone C, the mesh messaging app will bounce the message from A to C via phone B.
Plus, the people forwarding the message needn’t be in your contacts list or perform any further actions whatsoever for it to reach your intended target. This makes it harder for the government or hackers to shut it down as there’s no single point of failure that can be targeted to shut it down.
The more users in a mesh network, the better mesh messaging works.How to Use A Mesh Messaging App
For you to understand just how mesh messaging works, we tested one of the popular off-the-grid apps, Bridgefy, and here’s a step-by-step guide on how to use it.
The first step is to go to Google Play Store or App Store depending on your phone, and download the Bridgefy app. For this guide, we’re using an Android smartphone with Android 9 version, so we’ll download the app from Google Play Store.
You’ll find two apps listed under Bridgefy: Bridgefy-Offline Messaging and Bridgefy Alerts. Download the Bridgefy-Offline Messaging option.
Next, launch the app and set it up by tapping Get Started on the new screen.
Complete the set up by adding a username (preferably one your contacts know you by) and tap Complete setup.
If you get a popup that requests you to update Location settings, tap Enable, and move the Location slider to On. Hit the return button on your phone to go back to Bridgefy.
You’re now ready to use Bridgefy for mesh messaging. In the Chats screen, you’ll find two red buttons: Spread the love and Add a friend. You can use them to invite friends to join you on Bridgefy or add a friend to your list who probably already uses the app.
Tap on a user’s name to start sending them messages. You can also send your location by tapping the red button at the lower right side of the screen.
