Our Verdict

As with the previous generation, you’ll want to buy the iPhone 6S Plus over the regular model if you want a larger screen and optical image stabilisation – if you don’t mind paying extra for it and don’t mind a bulkier, heavier phone.

As expected, Apple has announced the iPhone 6S and iPhone 6S Plus smartphones but what’s the difference between the two? Here’s our iPhone 6S vs iPhone 6S Plus comparison including price and specs. See: Best iPhone 6S deals.

Here to take on the Galaxy S6, Xperia Z5, One M9 and other smartphones, the iPhone 6S is available in two models. Apple launched them alongside the iPad Pro, iPad mini 4 and new Apple TV at its launch event last night.

With the phones being extremely similar, we’ve split this article up into two sections to explain what is different and what it the same – rather than going through various different aspects one at a time.

iPhone 6S vs iPhone 6S Plus: What’s different?

As with the iPhone 6, the 6S and 6S Plus are priced differently so it might be a case of which one can you afford. With three storage capacities available, the iPhone 6S starts at £539 while the iPhone 6S Plus will cost you at least £619. See the table below for the full price line-up.

The main difference between the two phones is once again the screen size (which hasn’t changed in true ‘s’ model fashion). This means you can choose between a 4.7in screen with a 750×1334 resolution (326 ppi) and a larger 5.5in display with a Full HD 1080×1920 resolution (401ppi). They both have the new 3D Touch technology which is explained below.

With different screen sizes, it’s no surprise that they have different dimensions and most importantly weights. The iPhone 6S is more manageable, of course, at 67x138x7.1mm and 143g while the Plus model is a heftier 78x158x7.3mm and 192g.

Although there is a new camera in the iPhone 6S models, it’s still only the Plus which boasts optical image stabilisation which works for photos and video.

The battery is also larger in the 6S Plus and according to Apple’s figures will provide better battery life. It will last 16 days on standby compared to 10 and video playback is touted as 14 hours against 11 on the regular 6S.

iPhone 6S vs iPhone 6S Plus: What’s the same?

So we’ve outlined the differences between the iPhone 6S and iPhone 6S Plus which means all the other aspects of the smartphones are the same no matter which one you choose. Let’s run through the key points of the new 6S phones.

There’s a new colour available with the iPhone 6S so alongside Silver, Space Grey and Gold you can choose Rose Gold (above).

Apple has given the devices a new chip in the form of the A9 64-bit processor which comes with the M9 motion co-processor. The design now includes 7000 Series aluminium which is stronger (to avoid another bend-gate) and the strongest glass ever used on a smartphone.

A new 12Mp iSight is found at the back which supports 4K video and a new feature called Live Photos will capture video before and after a photo so you can make it come to life in a sort of gif style. Note, however, that TechCrunch has shown Live Photos take up roughly twice the amount of storage space as a standard 12Mp photo, so you may want to choose your iPhone storage capacity carefully.

The key new feature of the iPhone 6S models is the 3D Touch, essentially Force Touch, which has been built into the screen. It detects how much pressure you put on the display so you can do more things with it. It’s kinda the evolution of the long press. In tandem is a Taptic Engine which provides shorter and more precise vibration feedback.

Apple has introduces Peek and Pop so you can do things like preview an email with a light touch, a Peek, then go further into with by pressing harder, a Pop. Quick Actions will also help you out so you can press harder on an icon to do things like send a message to a favourite contact, check-in on Facebook or open the front camera to take a selfie – all directly from the homescreen.

Other specs remain the same with iOS 9 pre-loaded and various existing features such as Touch ID, Apple Pay and a Lightning port.

Our Verdict

The iPhone 6 is a great smartphone but isn’t a must have upgrade if you have an iPhone 5s as the upgrades are fairly minimal. If you don’t mind the smaller screen, the iPhone 5s remains a decent buy with Touch ID, a great camera and solid performance. Buy the iPhone 6 if you want a bigger screen, more storage and longer battery life.

The iPhone 5s is now the old generation iPhone with the unsurprising arrival of the iPhone 6. A new Apple smartphone means changes so here’s where we compare the iPhone 5s and iPhone 6 to explain the difference between the two including price, features, performance and specs. See also: Best smartphones of 2024.

The iPhone 6 has been on sale since September but don’t expect the price to be any lower so it still costs £539 for the 16GB model, £619 for the 64GB and £699 for the 128GB. The iPhone 5s was £549 so that’s a small price reduction and the now old generation iPhone drops to £459 and is only available in 16- or 32GB.

iPhone 5s vs iPhone 6: Screen size

The iPhone 5s has a 4in display, which for a flagship smartphone is actually pretty tiny. Even mini versions of flagship phones from Samsung, LG and HTC have displays bigger than 4in. As expected, the iPhone 6 has a 4.7in display (the iPhone 6 Plus is even bigger at 5.5in). See also: iPhone 6 release date, price, specs & new features.

With a bigger screen comes a higher resolution – 750 x 1334. The iPhone 6 has 38 percent more pixel but the larger screen means the pixel density stays the same at 326ppi (that’s what Apple calls Retina quality).

In terms of technology, the iPhone 6 has LCD tech called dual domain pixels, which allow it to have a very broad angle of view. The display also has higher contrast and a thinner backlight, according to Apple.

See also: LG G3 vs iPhone 5s comparison.

iPhone 5s vs iPhone 6: Design

Because the screen is bigger, the on/off button is now positioned on the side of the phone rather than the top. The iPhone 6 still comes in the same colours options: space grey, silver and gold.

Several allegedly leaked photographs of the iPhone 6’s back seemed to suggest that the iPhone 6 would have an illuminated Apple logo on the back but that’s not the case.

iPhone 5s vs iPhone 6: Features & specs

The iPhone 5s has a powerful A7 processor and, you’ve guessed it, the iPhone 6 has a new A8 processor. It uses a 20nm process and delivers 25 percent more CPU power and 50 percent better efficiency than the A7, according to Apple. It also add 50 percent on the GPU side of things. It’s still 64-bit, of course and you can check out our benchmark results below.

The A7 comes with the M7 co-processor and the A8 comes with the new M8 co-processor which can identify what type of activity you’re doing, estimate distance and – with the introduction of a barometer – knows details on elevation change.

Of course, there is 4G LTE support and Apple has added support for 20 LTE bands – the iPhone 5s has 13. A new feature is VoLTE (voice over LTE) which will be supported on EE in the UK.

We’ve heard rumours about a bigger and better battery in the iPhone 6, but some of that extra power could be used up by the iPhone 6’s bigger display.

Rumours on the iPhone 6 appear to have been pretty spot on as the device now features, for the first time, 802.11ac Wi-Fi, a new 128GB option (no 32GB any more) and NFC. The latter will be used in conjuction with ApplePay which will launch first in the US in October with credit cards/debit cards from AmEx, MasterCard, and Visa.

In terms of battery life, Apple claims the iPhone 6 will provide 14 hours of talktime and 11 hours of video playback compared to 10 hours for both on the iPhone 5s. You can see the full set of theoretical numbers below.

Our tests show that on average, the iPhone 5s lasts a day of usage whereas the iPhone 6 offers two. So this is a good reason to opt for the newer model.

iPhone 5s vs iPhone 6: Cameras

For starters is introduces ‘focus pixels’ which means phase detection autofocus (something which has been on Android phones for a while). It also has digital image stabilization (the iPhone 6 Plus steps this up to optical). The new camera also allows users to record slo-mo footage at up to 240fps, twice that of the iPhone 5s.

The front facing Facetime HD camera has a new sensor, larger f/2.2 aperture and lets in 81 percent more light, according to Apple. New features include a burst mode and improved face detection.

iPhone 5s vs iPhone 6: Software

Both the iPhone 5s and iPhone 6 will run iOS 8, the update to the Apple mobile will be available to iPhone users (back to the 4S) on 17 September. One new feature which will come to the iPhone 6 is the landscape orientation homescreen (see below). Since the iPhone 5s lacks NFC, the ApplePay feature which we mentioned earlier will also be exclusive.

12 Best Iphone 7 And Iphone 7 Plus Accessories You Should Buy

There is no doubt that the iPhone 7 and the iPhone 7 Plus are great phones. They have one of the best smartphone cameras available today, and the iPhone 7 Plus has two of them, and they come in two entirely new (and really great) colors, as well. A lot of people are definitely going to buy them. However, as great as iPhone’s are, there are a plethora of accessories available for them, that can make these smartphones even better. So, for all of you who are planning on buying the iPhone 7 or the iPhone 7 Plus, we have curated the 12 best accessories that you can (and should) buy to make your experience with the iPhone 7 or 7 Plus even better.

1. Lightning Headphones for iPhone 7 and iPhone 7 Plus

Now that Apple has removed the 3.5 mm headphone jack from the latest iteration of their iPhones, it really leaves people with only one wired option: use lightning headphones. Apple will be including lightning earpods with every iPhone 7 and iPhone 7 Plus that they sell, but let’s face it, earpods don’t sound all that good, and for anyone who wants a better experience, third party lightning headphones are probably the best way to experience music on the iPhone now.

Audeze Sine

The Audeze Sine are audiophile quality headphones that use planar magnetic technology to produce sound. They have a much better bass, as well as better transients than most other headphones out there, along with extremely low distortion. Since they use the lightning port, they come with a built-in DAC, and an amplifier built right into the cable, so you can basically bypass your iPhone’s DAC and use the headphone DAC. The headphones also come with integrated Siri support.

Philips Fidelio

If you’re not an audiophile, or if you simply can’t justify spending $500 on a pair of headphones, then you can consider the Philips Fidelio. These headphones from Philips also use a lightning cable to connect to your iPhone, and they come with an integrated DAC and amplifier. The frequency response offered by the Fidelio is great, ranging from 7 Hz to 20kHz.

The construction of the Philips Fidelio is aluminium with stitched leather, so they look nice and feel like a premium pair of headphones should. The sound is good, and for travelling, and generally carrying them around, they come with a faux suede pouch.

2. Bluetooth Headphones for iPhone 7 and iPhone 7 Plus

If you completely hate the idea of using the lightning port on your iPhone for connecting your headphones, then you can choose to go wireless with Bluetooth headphones as well. Bluetooth headphones have gotten a lot better in the last few years, and the improving quality of Bluetooth audio was also probably one of the reasons that Apple decided to do away with the 3.5 mm audio jack on the iPhone 7 and iPhone 7 Plus.

Bose Soundlink On Ear Headphones

The Bose Soundlink on ear headphones are a pair of really great headphones from Bose, that can give up to 15 hours of playback on a single charge, on a Lithium ion battery that can be recharged. So, you don’t need to mess around with replacing batteries and such. If that was not enough, the headphones get fully charged in around 90 minutes, and even a 15 minute charge is enough to keep them going for another 2 hours.

The headphones claim to have a state of the art interface and voice prompts to make the process of pairing them with your iPhone 7 and iPhone 7 Plus easier. They come with dual microphones to reduce background noise when you are taking a call using the headphones, and the earcups on the headphones can be rotated the way you want them to be. If you are a frequent traveller and would like to carry your bluetooth headphones around, the Bose Soundlink fold down for easy storage in a headphone case.

JBL E40BT Wireless Headphone

If the price tag on the Bose Soundlink seems too high to you, but you don’t want to compromise on the sound quality and brand trust, you can go with the JBL E40BT Wireless Headphones. These headphones from JBL boast 40 mm drivers for a full audio spectrum and clarity, along with an earcup based microphone for echo cancellation.

The battery used in the JBL E40BT is a rechargeable Lithium ion battery that can give up to 16 hours of playback on a single charge. They also come with noise cancellation and a proprietary ShareMe technology with which users can share the audio playing on the headphones with any other ShareMe enabled devices that they might have.

7. Docks for iPhone 7 and iPhone 7 Plus

If you’re the kind of person who likes to have a dock on your desk to keep your iPhone on, then you should definitely consider these docks for your new iPhone 7 and iPhone 7 Plus.

Apple iPhone Lightning Dock

The official dock from Apple is extremely minimal in design and gives an iPhone a look like it’s floating above the desk. It definitely looks good, and goes with the overall design philosophy of the iPhone. It is available in five metallic finishes, to match your iPhone’s color, and can charge and sync your iPhone at the same time, if connected to your Mac. The dock also provides users the ability of using the phone while it is docked.

TKHOT Charging Dock Stand

If you’re looking for a cheaper dock than the official Apple Lightning dock, you should definitely consider this one. The TKHOT Charging Dock is small and easy to carry around, if you need to. It offers charging and sync support, just like the official dock, and while it should work with slim cases, it might not work with cases that are too thick for the dock to be able to accommodate them. That being said, it does hold the device firmly in place while offering full access to the buttons and the mic on the iPhone.

8. Lightning Adapters for iPhone 7 and iPhone 7 Plus Lightning to 3.5 mm Headphone Jack Adapter

Apple will bundle one of these adapters inside every iPhone 7 and iPhone 7 Plus box that they sell, but it’s pretty obvious that people are going to lose these things all the time. Fortunately, Apple will sell these adapters separately as well, and for a rather reasonable price, as far as Apple accessories go. This adapter will basically let you connect your 3.5 mm headphones into your iPhone 7 and iPhone 7 Plus.

Lightning Audio + Charge RockStar

This adapter from Belkin is probably the best solution that is available for the problem of listening to music while charging the iPhone. The adapter basically splits the lightning port on the iPhone into two lightning ports, each of which can then be used simultaneously. So you can connect the charger in one of them, and plug your lightning headphones into the other one, and enjoy (albeit cumbersomely), music while charging your iPhone.

9. External Speakers for iPhone 7 and iPhone 7 Plus

The iPhone 7 and the iPhone 7 Plus will have stereo speakers, and that should definitely improve the sound quality of the phones quite a bit. However, there is no substitute for a good external speaker, as far as good sound goes. So here are the best speakers that you can buy for your iPhone, and enjoy your music the way it was meant to be.

Bose SoundDock XT Speaker

The Bose SoundDock is a docking speaker for your iPhone. It charges your iPhone via the lightning connecter built right into it, while playing music from the phone. The speaker has been designed in a way that it provides the full audio spectrum in a compact size. If you ever want to use another device with the speaker, it does come with an AUX port that you can plug into. Over-all, the speaker is a great accessory for the iPhone that can charge the iPhone while playing music from it.

Bose SoundLink Color Bluetooth Speaker

If docking your iPhone everytime you want to listen to music is not something that you want to do, you should consider getting the Bose SoundLink Bluetooth Speaker. The speaker, as the name suggests, uses Bluetooth to connect with your iPhone 7 and iPhone 7 Plus, and contains a Lithium-ion battery that can provide 8 hours of playback on a single charge.

The speaker provides a full audio range, and pairing it is easy with the voice prompts that it comes with. It can also connect two devices at the same time and let you switch between them easily, so you can make another device play a song as soon as a song on the first device ends.

So you can simply connect the iXpand to your iPhone, and transfer all the large movies, videos, and images that you have stored on your device.

The files stored on the iXpand Flash Drive can be viewed directly from the drive itself, so you won’t even need to copy them back onto your phone. Simply connect the drive to your iPhone 7 or iPhone 7 Plus and watch all the movies that you have stored on the flash drive.

12. Powerbanks for iPhone 7 and iPhone 7 Plus

While Apple claims that the battery life on the new iPhone 7 and iPhone 7 Plus is much better than the last generation iPhones, the fact remains that iPhones still don’t have a great battery life, and for people who use their iPhones extensively, the battery life probably doesn’t even last a full working day, making power banks a necessity.

Mophie Powerstation Plus

The Mophie Powerstation Plus is one of the powerbanks that Apple mentions on their official accessories page. It claims to add up to 21 hours of additional backup to your iPhone, which should be enough for most people. The power bank has a capacity of 3000 mAh, which doesn’t sound all that great, but it does come with 2.4A current output, to allow for a fast charging experience on the iPhone.

Iphone: 3G Vs. 3G S

PALO ALTO, Calif. — I picked up my new iPhone 3G S at the store early today, and after several hours of testing, I’m impressed so far.

Not only did I find it a lot faster than the 3G for loading applications, I also quickly came to appreciate its new video capabilities and its voice control.

The new phone looks virtually identical to its predecessor. And since Apple (NASDAQ: AAPL) just issued a free update of the iPhone operating system for previous iPhones, many of the new features are also available on first- and second-generation iPhones, and even the iPod Touch (although iPod Touch users will have to pay $10 for the software).

But there are some things you only get with the new hardware.

For example, with the 3G S and the older 3G side by side, I launched several applications. AOL Radio, Facebook and Safari all loaded about twice as fast on the 3G S.

There is technology in the new phone that will use AT&T’s faster HSPA 7.2 megabit data network, but that network isn’t yet available.

However, I still found Web surfing in Safari to be noticeably faster on the new phone compared to the 3G connected to the same Wi-Fi or cellular network, presumably because of the new phone’s faster processor.

I wasn’t sure I’d like it, but I’m falling in love with the Voice Control feature in the new phone. To call someone in your contact list, you simply hold down the home button and say, “Call Dave Smith” (or whomever). If Dave has multiple phone numbers, a voice will ask you if you wish to call his home, or office, or his mobile — and so on.

You can also use this to dial a number by simply saying “Dial 555-1212”, and it will dial for you.

When in the main screen, I said “shuffle”, and the phone told me that no music is playing, and asked, “Do you want to play music now?” When I said “yes,” the music started. Available commands are displayed on the screen when you’re using Voice Control.

Of course, Apple didn’t invent voice control. There are similar features on many other cell phones but, as is often the case, Apple implemented voice control in a way that actually makes it easy and pleasant to use.

One of the most heralded new features is the iPhone’s improved camera. It’s been upgraded to three megapixels and now has autofocus. If you touch the screen, a rectangle shows the focus area.

Most important, the 3G S can now take video, which you can easily e-mail or upload to YouTube. The video is standard VGA — not high definition — but you can shoot either in portrait or widescreen landscape mode.

Once you’ve completed your shoot, you can trim the beginning and the ending. That’s not exactly high-end video editing, but it’s very useful. You can then send the video as an e-mail or upload it directly to your YouTube account.

My first video won’t win any Academy Awards, but you can see the 43-second clip I shot from the Apple store below.

There is a also a nifty new Voice Memo application that, like the video app, lets you trim the beginning and ending of your audio. Although it’s likewise not as positioned as a professional tool, I found the quality good enough to use for radio clips.

At first, I wondered why anyone other than a hiker would care about the iPhone’s new compass — until I tried pressing the compass button within Google Maps and noticed that it orients you based on the direction you’re moving. I’m sure other application developers will also find a way to use this feature.

As I said earlier, some of the features on the new phone are also available on older iPhones through the free OS 3 upgrade. These include (finally) the ability to copy, cut and paste text; a wider landscape keyboard in mail; messages; and the ability to search across the phone for contacts, mail, calendars, notes and iPod content.

Clearly, the iPhone 3G S is a worthwhile new addition to Apple’s lineup. But if you’re already an iPhone user, it’s hard to say whether the extra speed and new features are worth the extra price, especially if you’re in the middle of your AT&T contract and have to pay a premium over the standard $199 for the 16 GB model or $299 for the 32 GB version.

And now that the older 8 GB iPhone 3G has been reduced to $99, some people might want to buy that inflation-friendly model, which has many of the same features at a more affordable price.

Still, compared to the competition — including Palm’s new Pre — the iPhone 3 GS is a good value and a very innovative product.
