iRobot selling Roomba maps is a good idea badly communicated

iRobot had a great idea to automatically map the smart home, but may have permanently damned it by fudging its announcement. The domestic robot-maker is best known for its Roomba robot vacuum cleaners, which over progressive generations have gone from navigating by trial-and-error – effectively bumping their way around rooms – to generating increasingly detailed maps of each owner’s home. It’s that mapping data that iRobot wanted to leverage, through deals with third-parties.

Speaking to Reuters, iRobot CEO Colin Angle outlined his vision for expanding the usefulness of the data beyond each Roomba. “There’s an entire ecosystem of things and services that the smart home can deliver once you have a rich map of the home that the user has allowed to be shared,” he pointed out.

Indeed, the chief executive suggested, iRobot could reach a deal to sell that data to Apple, Google-owner Alphabet, or Amazon within the next couple of years. Unsurprisingly that possibility hasn’t gone down well with users, who are concerned of the privacy implications of having their personal data sold out from under them.

According to iRobot’s privacy policy – last updated in 2024 – the company’s connected Roomba and other robot models are able to transmit mapping data to the cloud. They also gather battery and usage data, along with details on the “health” of the robot like its battery condition. “It is possible to use our smart technology Robots without WiFi or Bluetooth data transmission,” iRobot points out, “simply by disconnecting your WiFi or Bluetooth from the device or by never connecting it at all.”

Whether selling that data comes under the remit of the policy is questionable. iRobot says it may provide personal data “to third parties who we think may offer you products or services you may enjoy,” but only with individual consent being given. Alternatively, data that does not allow for specific users to be picked out could be shared. “We may also share information with others in an aggregated and anonymous form that does not reasonably identify you directly as an individual,” the policy suggests.

Angle isn’t wrong in that there’s an ongoing blindspot in the typical smart home when it comes to location. While we’re used to GPS giving us an idea of where we are when we’re out, and Bluetooth beacons and such are gradually gaining some traction in public places like shopping malls, stadiums, and concert venues, the same technology is yet to really venture into the home. TrackR has tried something similar, with its Atlas system, but generally if you want your connected home to understand what devices are where you need to explicitly tell it that.

For instance, your mesh routers could use such a map to figure out better positioning for each node, maximizing WiFi coverage. Speech-controlled assistants, like Echo or Apple’s upcoming HomePod, could recommend where they should be placed in order to hear instructions most effectively. By combining proximity data from devices we carry as a matter of course, like our smartphones, with the location of fixed Bluetooth devices and an understanding of how each room is set out, the IoT at large could better react to how we move through it.

My Big Idea: A Web

Arthur Emma (CGS’09, CAS’11, Wheelock’15) put his philosophy degree to high-tech use when he founded ByDesign, which offers web- and app-based daily planning tools for students and young professionals.

In our My Big Idea series, we bring you interviews with BU alums and other members of the University community who have launched a business, built a new product, or solved problems big and small. We ask them how they got the idea, what were their biggest stumbling blocks, and what’s next for their big idea.

Arthur Emma’s entrepreneurial streak has been evident at least since fifth grade in Wisconsin, when the principal summoned him and a friend to his office for selling fireworks out of the cafeteria.

At BU, Emma (CGS’09, CAS’11, Wheelock’15) broadened his horizons by majoring in philosophy along with business administration. Proving that you can do something with a philosophy degree, he parlayed his education into founding the technology company ByDesign, which he calls “an organizational, planning, and social networking application for college students and young professionals.”

Tech innovator was a career detour for Emma after his work with Teach for America, the nonprofit that funnels graduates of top universities into two years of teaching low-income students. At the same time, his humanities education is not unrelated to the birth of ByDesign, as it triggered his search for ways to better map out a worthwhile life by mapping out a more intentional daily schedule.

Bostonia interviewed Emma about how he conceived ByDesign, what it took to build the company—and the two things he wishes he’d done differently, at BU and after.

A with Arthur Emma

Can you explain what ByDesign provides, how it does that, and for whom?

Where did you get the idea? How many employees do you have, and when did you start the company?

Give us your sales pitch: how will ByDesign make my life better?

Emma: People will think you have super powers, because you will be better organized and will achieve more of your goals. You will also feel less stressed, as you will have a short- and long-term plan to keep you on track. Last, life will feel more meaningful, as you’ll be able to align your tasks with your priorities and will have the support of your ByDesign community.

Looking back, is there anything you wish you had done differently? What was your biggest failure or mistake?

Emma: My biggest failure was not taking computer science classes in college. As a founder and CEO of a tech company, I had to play lots of catch-up early on. Although I’m still “relatively” young, I wish I had launched a business earlier on in my career. Launching businesses is easier when you’re young, have endless energy and less commitments.

How are you funding your business and how hard was securing funding?

Emma: We’ve raised a million dollars in preseed funding. Raising money was hard, but I was fortunate enough to have a good childhood friend, Jesse Adams—coincidentally, we were both student body presidents at Boston-based schools at the same time—who introduced me to some outstanding entrepreneurs and angel investors who believed in our idea. That said, raising money is always brutal for first-time entrepreneurs in risky tech sectors who are pursuing potentially revolutionary, yet abstract, ideas.

What are your most important tips for other entrepreneurs hoping to launch start-ups?

Emma: First look inwards, then look outwards. Find what you love and what brings you meaning. Entrepreneurship is a long game, and if you’re not working on something you love, you will burn out. Second, look for resources—friends, team members, associations, mentors, investors—anyone who is willing to support you, work with you, or lend an ear. Isolation is where start-ups go to die.

What’s your favorite or the most fun part of the business?

Emma: The two things I enjoy most are laughing with my team and seeing the business grow. One of our core values is having a sense of humor. We believe that humor is the key ingredient for creative thinking and that it produces an environment where people perform at their best. In regard to growth, this is what start-up founders live for. There’s nothing more exciting than seeing growth, whether that is raising money, gaining customers, or bringing on important mentors. It’s validation of all your hard work.

How will you grow ByDesign?

Google Maps Vs Apple Maps: Which Navigation App Is Right For You?

Edgar Cervantes / Android Authority

Google Maps and Apple Maps are two of the most widely used navigation apps today, offering a range of features to make traveling easier and more convenient. However, each app has its unique strengths and weaknesses. In this Google Maps vs Apple Maps showdown, we’ll compare both apps’ features, user interface, navigation accuracy, car integration, and more.

Google Maps vs Apple Maps

If you own an Android phone, you’ve likely been using Google Maps, which is pre-installed on most devices. Although, it can be easily downloaded from the Apple App Store for iOS devices. On the other hand, while Apple Maps is a native app on iOS devices, it is not officially available for Android devices through the Google Play Store. However, there are workarounds to access Apple Maps using web-based solutions, though the experience may not be as seamless or feature-rich as on an iOS device.

Already, Google Maps gets bonus points for near-universal availability. While the decision between Apple Maps vs Google Maps is likely faced more often by iPhone users, the comparison between navigation apps is still a worthwhile investigation regardless of which device you have. Let’s find out which app does a better job of getting you from point A to Point B.

Features and Abilities

Google Maps offers various features such as real-time traffic updates, voice-guided navigation, offline maps, Street View for an on-the-ground first-person perspective, and live location. It also integrates with Google services like Google Assistant for hands-free control and Google Earth for satellite imagery.

Apple Maps, on the other hand, has similar features like real-time traffic, voice-guided navigation, offline maps, and Look Around. However, it also includes Apple-specific features like indoor maps for public places like airports, Flyover for a drone-like view of major landmarks and cities, and Siri integration for hands-free control. Both apps use a dark mode to make it easier for your eyes during late-night driving.

User Interface

Both Google Maps and Apple Maps have user-friendly interfaces. Google Maps is a bit more cluttered, with more information displayed on the screen at once. Along the top screen is the search bar, with your account profile accessible from the left. Below you’ll find dedicated buttons for things like restaurants or gas stations, which can be helpful.

At the bottom of the screen is a menu to access the Explore and Commute features, saved locations, local news, and the option to contribute reviews and feedback for local amenities. If you find it all a bit much, you can tap the center of the screen, and it will all disappear.

Navigation Accuracy

Traffic Information

Public Transport

Google Maps’ robust public transportation system offers comprehensive information on transit routes, schedules, and estimated travel times. Apple Maps has improved its public transport information in recent years, but it still lags behind Google Maps in terms of coverage and accuracy. It can tell you the location of, say, a bus that’s en route, but it can’t tell you how crowded that bus is, which Google Maps can. Either way, they’ll both tell you what stop to get off at and suggest alternative ride-share options.

Assistant Integration

Google Maps integrates seamlessly with Google Assistant, enabling voice commands and personalized recommendations based on your Google account. Apple Maps integrates with Siri, offering a similar experience for iPhone users. Both assistants offer comparable functionality, with the choice mainly coming down to personal preference and ecosystem loyalty.

Siri does work with Google Maps, but you will have to specify which app you want directions from, or else it will default to Apple Maps. You can turn Siri off and download and set up Google Assistant on your iPhone, so you don’t have to say “directions to X from Google Maps” every time, but it is a bit of a hassle either way.

Street View vs Look Around

Google Maps Street View provides panoramic street-level imagery, allowing users to explore locations virtually from a first-person perspective. Apple Maps’ Look Around offers a similar feature with high-resolution, 3D imagery. Both are valuable alternatives to the typical top-down view of maps that give you a better sense of the terrain, especially while traveling to new areas.

While both features serve the same purpose, Google Maps has more extensive coverage since it has been around since 2007. More users have had more time to contribute images from streets worldwide. Apple’s Look Around has only been around since 2023, and the number of places you can actually use the feature is far less. Google had a head start and has managed to document more places, but Apple Maps should catch up to be just as robust with time.

Business Information

Both Google Maps and Apple Maps offer detailed business information, including addresses, phone numbers, hours of operation, and customer reviews. With Google Maps, you’ll find discovery options for specific categories below the search bar and a general overview of everything available from the Explore tab at the bottom. Apple Maps has a Fine Nearby feature that works similarly to Explore, but the information is paltry in comparison.

Google Maps has a more extensive database due to crowdsourcing user contributions through reviews and ratings. Contact information, opening hours, menus, and more are all at your fingertips. Also, because Google knows where people are at any moment, it can estimate how busy a place is, which is helpful if you want to avoid crowds.

Apple Maps has curated guides that source relevant editorial content online to help familiarize you with an area, which can sometimes provide higher-quality recommendations. Still, you certainly get more quantity of user feedback and tips from Google Maps discovery.

Privacy Car Integration

Google Maps is available on Android Auto, while Apple Maps works with Apple CarPlay. Both systems offer a similar experience: voice-guided navigation and easy access to music and communication apps on their vehicle’s infotainment system. Android Auto and Apple CarPlay are available on many car models and work seamlessly with your vehicle’s controls. The choice between the two largely depends on your smartphone platform and personal preferences.

Google Maps vs Apple Maps: Which one is right for you?

Both Google Maps and Apple Maps offer a range of features to make navigation and travel more convenient. While Google Maps has an edge in areas like traffic information, public transport, and business information, Apple Maps shines in terms of privacy, user interface, and seamless integration with the Apple ecosystem. Ultimately, the choice between Google Maps and Apple Maps comes down to personal preference, the devices you use, and the specific features you prioritize. It’s worth trying both apps to see which one best suits your needs and preferences.

Yes, you can use Google Maps on Apple CarPlay. To do this, you must install the Google Maps app on your iPhone and a CarPlay-compatible vehicle. Once connected, you can select Google Maps from the CarPlay interface to use it for navigation.

Yes, you can use Google Maps on Apple Watches with WatchOS 5 or higher and iOS 10 or higher. You must also turn on location services to use Google Maps on your Apple Watch.

Apple Maps is not officially available for Android devices through the Google Play Store. However, there are workarounds to access Apple Maps using third-party apps or web-based solutions, but the experience is not as seamless or feature-rich as on an iOS device.

Playstation Plus: A Great Idea Bereft Of Content

Expected since E3 if slightly hazy in terms of specifics, Sony’s PlayStation Plus subscriber service is now available for gamers willing to part with $50 a year. All you need is the latest 3.40 firmware update, a credit card number, and a bit of disposable income.

I just pulled it down–a trifle slow coming, through whether size or traffic-related I couldn’t say–and ran through the subscriber options to see whether it’s worth $50.

3.40’s Free Side

Not everything in 3.40 takes credit cards. For instance: You can now edit video content saved to the PS3 and upload that video to YouTube or Facebook. Using the feature’s as simple as tapping on the Video Editor & Uploader icon–two stacked dots topped by a triangle. I had to download an additional 44MB update to get started, after which a simple “add,” “edit,” and “finish” interface let me import and tinker with various video slices. A note warns that video copied to the system prior to the 3.40 update won’t work (it’ll have to be recopied) nor will “copyright-protected” content, for obvious reasons.

System Auto-Off now defaults to 2 hours and offers several alternative settings (1, 3, or 5), though why you can’t just plug in a number manually seems odd. Why not 4, 6, or for that matter, 10.5?

Perhaps the best new gratis feature is five-star rating support–long overdue, and available on the Xbox 360’s LIVE service since 2008–which lets you rate PlayStation Store content. Scan around the Store and you’ll notice games are already racking up ratings by the hundreds.

Next: PlayStation Plus Troubles…

PlayStation Plus Troubles

The first icon lets you subscribe to the service itself. Tapping it brings up two options: A $49.99 one year package (currently offering an additional three bonus months) or a less ardent $17.99 three-month alternative. Both offer full access to the full service, which includes full game trial versions (try before you buy), early access to demos and game purchases, and exclusive discounts and free games from the PlayStation Store.

I opted for the $50 annual subscription, at which point a disclaimer popped up warning that “automatic funding [would] be set to on,” and that if my “wallet” didn’t have enough funds when the automatic subscription came due, “it [would] be automatically funded from the credit card on record to cover the renewal cost.”

Lucky me, when I went to confirm (with $0 in my wallet) I received the dreaded 80023102 error, which like most PS3 error codes told me absolutely nothing about how to solve the problem. A Google search turned up dozens of posts (like this one) from people unable to add funds to their wallets. I backed out of the Store to my account settings, and sure enough, my credit card information was out of date. Shame on me, but really–how hard would it be for Sony to offer a simple message saying as much at point of purchase?

Next: Behind the Paywall

Behind the Paywall

What do you get for $50 a year? At this point, not much. I counted nine total PP options, including a trial version of inFAMOUS, free full versions of Rally Cross ($5.99), Age of Zombies ($4.99), a Warhawk Fallen Star content pack ($1.99), a Fat Princess: Fat Roles expansion pack ($4.99), and Wipeout HD (19.99), a lone sci-fi theme, and–wait for it–two Fat Princess avatars.

Additionally, Midway and TikGames-Creat Studios were offering a handful of specially priced items, including stuff like Midway’s Mortal Kombat II (regularly $4.99, discounted to $2.50) and TiKGames-Create Studios’ Wakeboarding HD (regularly $14.99, discounted to $11.99).

But that’s it. All told, it’s more like a sampler platter of what to expect–trial versions, freebies, and discounts–when the service finally ramps up. I though that’d be now, but alas, we’re left to hypotheticals and unofficial conjecture about a holiday content fulfillment period.

Conclusion? Just Wait

So is it worth $50 a year? Clearly not yet. The potential’s there, sure, but Sony needs more content in a hurry, and content that caters to a much broader palette of player tastes, before it can justify the $50 annual price tag. It’s not enough to tally up what’s there and stipulate that it exceeds $50. I’ve already played and beat inFAMOUS. I’m not that into racing games like Wipeout or strategy-lite stuff like Age of Zombies or Fat Princess. And I don’t get much of charge from revisiting oldies like Mortal Kombat II, Gauntlet II, Rampage, and Rampart, all of which cost me extra dough anyway.

Unless any of that stuff really and truly appeals to you (or you’re just big on Sony charity) I’d pass on PlayStation Plus and wait for the service to fill up the cupboards. The content as-is feels like a press demo, not a public rollout. Give it a few months to blossom. Besides, how hard could it really be to add a few dozen more games, freebies, and discounts?
