Suggested December 2023 Is Microsoft Edge For Mac Any Good? We Put It To The Test
Thanks to Microsoft’s transition to Chromium for the Edge browser, it has quickly gained pace against its larger rival in Chrome. With strong performance and a smaller hit to battery life, Microsoft Edge is a strong alternative to Chrome for macOS users looking for something other than Safari. With support for Chrome extensions, it’s as full featured as any Microsoft browser has ever been and that’s a good thing. So how do you know if it’s the right browser for your Mac? Let’s check out Microsoft Edge for Mac and see if it’s really any good.
User InterfaceThe first thing you see as soon as you install Microsoft Edge is the user interface. Fortunately, it doesn’t deviate all that far from the likes of Chrome. The omnibox doubles as a search bar and place to enter website addresses. You can see shortcuts to all of your extensions directly to the right of the bar, while options for home, refresh and back and forward are all right where they should be.
As of the last few weeks, Edge now allows your browser tabs to not only rest on top of your omnibox but also on the side of the browser so you have more vertical space. Vertical tabs are not a Microsoft invention (Vivaldi already has this), but it is a big differentiator from the likes of Chrome, Safari and Firefox.
That just about everything is where it’s supposed to be in terms of the interface adds an immediate level of familiarity.
ExtensionsEdge offers an already impressive library of extensions through the Microsoft Edge add-ons store. Where Edge really shines is its ability to install extensions that are already available for Chromium browsers, and that opens the door to Chrome’s web store.
PrivacyOn Windows, Microsoft is touting Edge as its most secure browser. What about its macOS version? For its part, Edge offers three levels of protection against tracking, and it’s really nice to see the company offer something that allows the user to choose how it wants to be tracked online.
As an additional option, Edge also lets you send a website a “Do Not Track” request. In a perfect world, websites receiving this request would stop tracking you, but it’s a cautionary approach as websites can still track your activities even if this request is sent over. Overall, after a few months of use, this appears to work pretty well, and while most people will go with the Balanced option, since it arrives as the default, it won’t hinder performance. There is definitely still some tracking based on web searches, so there is still plenty of work to be done on that front, but it’s less so than with other browsers.
PerformanceAt the end of the day, it’s going to be tough to beat Safari on macOS in terms of overall performance. If you need the most minimal memory footprint, Safari is and likely always will be the answer. However, Edge is hardly bloated and performs admirably. Websites load fast and with better compatibility than Safari thanks to the Chromium engine. Software benchmarks are one thing, but what really matters is real world speed.
Between the two, it’s unlikely you’ll see a huge difference in loading times, which is a good thing. Edge doesn’t necessarily need to beat Safari in loading time as much it needs to keep pace. What’s more, unlike Chrome, Edge doesn’t make the fans on your computer sound like it’s about to take off. On top of that, Edge doesn’t hit the battery nearly as hard as Chrome does.
Data Syncing Final ThoughtsIn the end, Microsoft Edge for Mac is a fantastic macOS experience that rivals other browsers. Safari users will be hard pressed to find a better experience that offers a much deeper set of extensions to choose from as well as greater Web compatibility. That Edge also runs light on CPU and RAM is all the more reason to download it today.

A Look At The Google Messages App For Android. Is It Any Good?
When it comes to Android, you have a very wide selection of messaging apps to choose from. Since the Android OS is a Google product, the odds are pretty good that your phone will come default with the Google Messages app (also known simply as Messages).
If you don’t have it on your phone, you can download and install Messages from the Google Play Store.
Table of Contents
With so many Android messaging apps available, like Facebook Messenger, Pulse SMS, and EvolveSMS just to name a few, is Google Messages good enough to use as your default messaging app?
Let’s take a closer look at the features you’ll find in the Google Messages app for Android, and you can decide for yourself.
The Main Google Messages App WindowThe main message window in Google Messages is what you’d expect a messaging app to look like. You’ll see a log of all of your sent and received messages, and a Start chat button at the bottom to send a new message to someone.
Before we get to that, take a look at the menu options by tapping the three dots at the upper right corner of the window.
There you’ll see the following options:
Mark all unread messages as read (useful to unbold short messages you can read in the log window)
Open Google Messages for the web
Change the theme between light or dark
View your archived messages
View messages you’ve marked as spam or blocked
Open the settings window
Get help or provide feedback to Google
If you haven’t heard of the web based version of Google Messages, it’s a very useful feature if you don’t always have your phone with you when you’re working on your various computers and other devices.
Google Messages for WebWhen you select Messages for web in the menu, it’ll open a new window where you can tap QR code scanner to scan a QR code provided by the Google Messages for web page.
To do this, visit chúng tôi If it’s the first time you’ve used the site and haven’t synced your phone yet, you’ll see a QR code. After tapping QR code scanner, just scan the QR code on the screen using your camera.
This will sync your phone message with the cloud based Google Messages app. Now you’ll see your incoming and outgoing message log on the page.
You can select any of the messages in the log to continue the conversation just as you would on the phone.
You can tap the three dots at the top of the window to access the same menu that you accessed on your phone above.
Any settings you change in any of these menus will get synced with your phone. All of the same settings are available in a single long menu on the web page.
Consider this web app like a cloud based version of the messaging app on your phone.
It’s a great way to not miss any important incoming messages even if you’ve left your phone in your car or sitting in a drawer where you can’t hear any notifications.
Google Messages Setting MenusOne good way to fully understand the features provided by Google Messages is by exploring the Settings menus.
The main Settings window is where you can adjust features such as:
Whether you want the app to make a noise when you send outgoing messages.
Set your current country or have Android auto-detect it.
Enable or disable auto-correct and auto-suggest in Messages. You can also make these settings apply to Google Assistant.
Enable or disable web link previews in the chat window.
Enable verifying business senders so Google can block spam that doesn’t come from a verified business.
Enable or disable Google Messages intelligent algorithms to block spam
When you select Chat features from the settings window, you can configure all of the following Google Messages functionality:
See whether the Google Messages app has connectivity.
Have the app use Wi-Fi for messages if mobile data isn’t enabled.
Allow others to see whether you’ve read their messages (read receipts)
Enable whether others can see if you’re typing (if their own messaging app is compatible).
Enable or disable whether you want Messages to automatically download files people send you, even if you’re only on mobile data.
Selecting App notifications from the settings menu lets you configure whether you want to see notifications on your phone or on the web when you receive incoming messages.
It also lets you set up how you want to get notified, enable spam protection, and whether you want to be notified when a file is being downloaded via the app.
Searching and Sending Messages on Google MessagesWhenever you receive a new message from someone you’ve never received a message from before, Google Messages will ask you what you want to do with that new contact.
You can either select Add contact to add that person to your list of contacts, or select Report spam to mark it as a spam sender.
Google Messages also has a powerful search feature so you can search your entire history of messages for any of the following items:
Images
Videos
Places
Links
This is extremely useful for those times when you know someone sent you a picture of their baby several months ago, but you don’t want to scroll through hundreds of old messages to find it.
Right under the texting field, you can search for GIFs, find emojis, send your current location, share one of your contact details, or send the person a file from your mobile device or Google Drive.
If you select the small camera and picture icon to the left of the text field, a new window will appear under that field. There you’ll see a small preview window showing your current camera view, and a Gallery link you can use to find images on your device.
The camera preview lets you snap a quick picture while you’re texting, without having to switch over to your camera app to take it. It’s very convenient.
Whether you decide to go with Google Messages or not is up to you, but the Google Messages app is well worth a try. It has all of the features of most major messaging apps out there, and is constantly updated with useful new features you’ll love.
Microsoft Office Mobile Review: Is It As Good As The Desktop Version?
Previously, the mobile suite of Microsoft Office was exclusively available for Windows Phone only. Since Windows Phone is not the leading mobile OS, and it is quite unlikely that it will overtake iOS and Android and become the king of mobile, the only way for Microsoft to expand its reach is to port its Microsoft Office mobile suite to iOS and Android. This resulted in the Microsoft Office Mobile app for Android and iOS.
When it comes to document editing, there are already several players in the mobile market. Google Drive (Words and Sheets), Quick Office, Kingsoft Office, Documents to go, etc. Can Microsoft Office for Android break into the market like it is on the desktop? Let’s check it out.
Note: This Microsoft Office Mobile review is done on an Android phone, though reference to iOS (and App Store) will be provided too.
Installation and SetupHead over to Google Play (or App Store) and install Microsoft Office Mobile. The app is free to download and use, though you will need a OneDrive account. For Android phone, it only supports Android 4.0 and above.
Open up the app, and you will notice the big MS Office splash screen. If you have used Windows 8 or Windows Phone, you will find the familiar Metro-style interface in the app.
Once you get past the introduction screen, it will require you to sign in to your OneDrive account before you can use the app.
The sign-in process requires Internet connection, which means you won’t be able to use the app offline (unless you have signed in previously).
UsageOnce you are logged in, you will see three tabs in the main screen: Recent, Folder and Add New.
The Folder tab allows you to view your OneDrive folder and open documents from it. As can be seen, it doesn’t allow you to choose files from your local storage or SD card. I believe this is purposely designed so that more users will sign up for OneDrive even though it reduced the functionality of the app greatly.
Viewing and Editing DocumentsViewing Words, Excel and Powerpoint documents with the app is great. The viewing is optimized for mobile screen and most, if not all, of the formats are preserved. Editing them is another story.
Microsoft Office Mobile app only works with the newer Office Open XML format (namely docx, xlsx, pptx). While you can still view documents with the legacy format (doc, xls, ppt), you won’t be able to edit them.
While editing a Word document, there are not much formatting choices for you. You won’t be able to change fonts, heading, alignment, etc. All you can edit is basic stuff like Bold, strikethrough, increase/decrease font size, italic, underline, and change font color and background. Even then, you can only pick from three colors: Red, Yellow and Green. You can’t choose the color you want. Forget about inserting images into your document too.
When saving the document, you can only save to your OneDrive account. If you are not connected to the Internet, it will be cached locally, but you won’t be able to access it using your file manager yet.
As for Excel documents, the formatting options are pretty limited too.
ConclusionMicrosoft Office Mobile is really great for viewing documents on the go as most of the formats, animation, images, charts are preserved. However, when it comes to editing, it is really not up to par to the rest. Unless you need to regularly view heavily formatted documents on your phone and have all your documents in your OneDrive account, there is little reason for you to switch from your current mobile office suite.
Have you tried Microsoft Office Mobile? Let us know what you think about the app.

So We Put A Jet Turbine On Our Atv…
Don your Nomex firesuit and industrial-grade ear protection: It’s time to soak in some nature at 60 mph. PopSci staff photographer/madman John Carnett has realized an unholy dream long in the making: an ATV powered entirely by a jet turbine.
And then he took it to the woods and pushed it to the limit; to the edge of logic, control, and sanity.
As if intent to cement his internal reputation as the resident DIY crazy man, Carnett told me last year that his next project was going to involve a jet turbine and something he could drive. Unsurprisingly, Carnett didn’t feel the least bit hampered by the fact that he lacked a turbine, a vehicle, and any real knowledge about how to put a turbine on a vehicle. But after 10 months, untold thousands of dollars, a big hand from our buddies at QUAD magazine and the equivalent of a college degree in jet-power gleened from dozens of grizzeld old shop guys around the country, Carnett’s turbine-powered ATV, dubbed the Whirl, ripped up some ground in upstate New York last week, reaching speeds of 60 mph and torque that would launch it over an obstacle like the Duke boys escaping Boss Hog.
The vehicle is built around a donated Polaris RZR, a two-person quad that’s been stripped of its engine, roll cage, suspension, shocks, battery, drive axels, wheels, tires, and electrical system. When Carnett tried to buy a new turbine and explained why, manufacturers hung up on him, but he soon discovered the gray market of jet-power enthusiasts. His turbine, a former military powerplant manufactured in the 1960s, came from a guy who’d been using it in his Honda CRX and was trading up. The rest of the parts were either fabricated in John’s Philadelphia shop, custom made by someone sympathetic to the project (like the shocks Elka whipped up just for him) or acquired from the far-flung reaches of the internet (parts for a 40-year-old turbine being typically out of stock at Lowe’s).
Beside the obvious logistical challenges of cramming a jet turbine spewing 1300-degree Fahrenheit exhaust on a small platform inches behind the driver’s head—throwing off the weight and balance of the entire vehicle—and accounting for an entirely new set of mechanical and electrical systems, is the fact that small single stage turbines like to run at 102 percent of power 100 percent of the time, but it’s a little hard to steer a four-wheeler going balls-out through the woods (well, for very long anyway). Carnett’s solution (and a good portion of the 10 months spent building it): install a hydraulic drive system between the turbine and the built-in gear box. A single axis joystick style controller, like those that control massive mining equipment, acts as an accelerator, adjusting the current flowing to the hydraulic pump, which regulates how much of the turbine’s power makes it to the drive shaft.
After an initial cop-taunting run around the streets of Philly, Carnett took the beast to the woods for its initial off-road run last week, and sent back this note, which pretty well sums it up:
“This past Saturday I took the WHIRL to a 14-acre area for R&D. The machine exceeded my dreams, scared a few people and made me smile so hard that it hurt. It’s rather like standing next to a 114db hot dog cooker that could explode at any time: tens of thousands of RPMs by your head, 8,000 rpm by your ass. The danger seems to defy the logic of the device. You get into an adrenaline rush that is unlike anything you could imagine—faster thru the woods, mud flying—at the very edge of control; then still faster; you get to the point of almost crashing prior to slowing down. Limits appear; the blurr stops; the turbine whine slows; you get out then fall to the ground with a body bruised yet feel no pain… J”
