Previously, the mobile suite of Microsoft Office was exclusively available for Windows Phone only. Since Windows Phone is not the leading mobile OS, and it is quite unlikely that it will overtake iOS and Android and become the king of mobile, the only way for Microsoft to expand its reach is to port its Microsoft Office mobile suite to iOS and Android. This resulted in the Microsoft Office Mobile app for Android and iOS.
When it comes to document editing, there are already several players in the mobile market. Google Drive (Words and Sheets), Quick Office, Kingsoft Office, Documents to go, etc. Can Microsoft Office for Android break into the market like it is on the desktop? Let’s check it out.
Note: This Microsoft Office Mobile review is done on an Android phone, though reference to iOS (and App Store) will be provided too.
Installation and SetupHead over to Google Play (or App Store) and install Microsoft Office Mobile. The app is free to download and use, though you will need a OneDrive account. For Android phone, it only supports Android 4.0 and above.
Open up the app, and you will notice the big MS Office splash screen. If you have used Windows 8 or Windows Phone, you will find the familiar Metro-style interface in the app.
Once you get past the introduction screen, it will require you to sign in to your OneDrive account before you can use the app.
The sign-in process requires Internet connection, which means you won’t be able to use the app offline (unless you have signed in previously).
UsageOnce you are logged in, you will see three tabs in the main screen: Recent, Folder and Add New.
The Folder tab allows you to view your OneDrive folder and open documents from it. As can be seen, it doesn’t allow you to choose files from your local storage or SD card. I believe this is purposely designed so that more users will sign up for OneDrive even though it reduced the functionality of the app greatly.
Viewing and Editing DocumentsViewing Words, Excel and Powerpoint documents with the app is great. The viewing is optimized for mobile screen and most, if not all, of the formats are preserved. Editing them is another story.
Microsoft Office Mobile app only works with the newer Office Open XML format (namely docx, xlsx, pptx). While you can still view documents with the legacy format (doc, xls, ppt), you won’t be able to edit them.
While editing a Word document, there are not much formatting choices for you. You won’t be able to change fonts, heading, alignment, etc. All you can edit is basic stuff like Bold, strikethrough, increase/decrease font size, italic, underline, and change font color and background. Even then, you can only pick from three colors: Red, Yellow and Green. You can’t choose the color you want. Forget about inserting images into your document too.
When saving the document, you can only save to your OneDrive account. If you are not connected to the Internet, it will be cached locally, but you won’t be able to access it using your file manager yet.
As for Excel documents, the formatting options are pretty limited too.
ConclusionMicrosoft Office Mobile is really great for viewing documents on the go as most of the formats, animation, images, charts are preserved. However, when it comes to editing, it is really not up to par to the rest. Unless you need to regularly view heavily formatted documents on your phone and have all your documents in your OneDrive account, there is little reason for you to switch from your current mobile office suite.

Is Microsoft Edge For Mac Any Good? We Put It To The Test
Thanks to Microsoft’s transition to Chromium for the Edge browser, it has quickly gained pace against its larger rival in Chrome. With strong performance and a smaller hit to battery life, Microsoft Edge is a strong alternative to Chrome for macOS users looking for something other than Safari. With support for Chrome extensions, it’s as full featured as any Microsoft browser has ever been and that’s a good thing. So how do you know if it’s the right browser for your Mac? Let’s check out Microsoft Edge for Mac and see if it’s really any good.
User InterfaceThe first thing you see as soon as you install Microsoft Edge is the user interface. Fortunately, it doesn’t deviate all that far from the likes of Chrome. The omnibox doubles as a search bar and place to enter website addresses. You can see shortcuts to all of your extensions directly to the right of the bar, while options for home, refresh and back and forward are all right where they should be.
As of the last few weeks, Edge now allows your browser tabs to not only rest on top of your omnibox but also on the side of the browser so you have more vertical space. Vertical tabs are not a Microsoft invention (Vivaldi already has this), but it is a big differentiator from the likes of Chrome, Safari and Firefox.
That just about everything is where it’s supposed to be in terms of the interface adds an immediate level of familiarity.
ExtensionsEdge offers an already impressive library of extensions through the Microsoft Edge add-ons store. Where Edge really shines is its ability to install extensions that are already available for Chromium browsers, and that opens the door to Chrome’s web store.
PrivacyOn Windows, Microsoft is touting Edge as its most secure browser. What about its macOS version? For its part, Edge offers three levels of protection against tracking, and it’s really nice to see the company offer something that allows the user to choose how it wants to be tracked online.
As an additional option, Edge also lets you send a website a “Do Not Track” request. In a perfect world, websites receiving this request would stop tracking you, but it’s a cautionary approach as websites can still track your activities even if this request is sent over. Overall, after a few months of use, this appears to work pretty well, and while most people will go with the Balanced option, since it arrives as the default, it won’t hinder performance. There is definitely still some tracking based on web searches, so there is still plenty of work to be done on that front, but it’s less so than with other browsers.
PerformanceAt the end of the day, it’s going to be tough to beat Safari on macOS in terms of overall performance. If you need the most minimal memory footprint, Safari is and likely always will be the answer. However, Edge is hardly bloated and performs admirably. Websites load fast and with better compatibility than Safari thanks to the Chromium engine. Software benchmarks are one thing, but what really matters is real world speed.
Between the two, it’s unlikely you’ll see a huge difference in loading times, which is a good thing. Edge doesn’t necessarily need to beat Safari in loading time as much it needs to keep pace. What’s more, unlike Chrome, Edge doesn’t make the fans on your computer sound like it’s about to take off. On top of that, Edge doesn’t hit the battery nearly as hard as Chrome does.
Data Syncing Final ThoughtsIn the end, Microsoft Edge for Mac is a fantastic macOS experience that rivals other browsers. Safari users will be hard pressed to find a better experience that offers a much deeper set of extensions to choose from as well as greater Web compatibility. That Edge also runs light on CPU and RAM is all the more reason to download it today.

Microsoft Office For Iphone Is Finally Here, And It Changes Everything
It’s here. Finally. Microsoft is now offering Office Mobile for iPhone. This is huge news for Microsoft Office, huge news for the iPhone, and a game changer for productivity on the go.
Starting today, Office Mobile for iPhone is available in the Apple App Store, and it’s free for Office 365 subscribers. (Office 365 Home Premium subscribers pay $10 per month or $100 per year for five installations, and Office 365 small-business users pay per seat.) With this one move, Microsoft expands its reach from a mere 1.2 percent of mobile users who use Windows Phone, to the nearly 60 percent who rely on iOS.
Using Office as a carrotOffice? On an iPhone? Believe it.
I’ve been screaming from the mountaintop for years that Microsoft should make Office available on other platforms and devices. Until now, Microsoft’s apparent strategy has been to use Microsoft Office as bait to lure customers to its Windows Phones and Windows tablets, but that tactic has failed.
Instead of driving demand for Microsoft’s mobile devices, it just forced users to find compatible alternatives—Documents to Go, QuickOffice, and Apple’s iWork apps— for the devices they do want to use.
Even in a best-case scenario—that is, in a currently non-existent world where mobile Windows devices are phenomenally successful—Microsoft can reasonably expect to capture only a quarter to a third of the overall market. So, if Microsoft continued to hold Office hostage to its hardware, the company would cede a majority of the market and Office would lose its dominant position.
A win for Office 365Microsoft has been crowing about the speed at which Office 365 reached the one-million-subscriber mark, hitting that milestone faster than Facebook, Dropbox, and a few other household names. The service clearly looks to be a success.
One of the primary benefits of Office 365 Home Premium is that it allows up to five users to install Microsoft Office on their PCs or Macs. Adding Office Mobile for the iPhone drives that value proposition even higher. Millions of iPhone users who haven’t yet subscribed to Office 365 have another very good reason to sign up.
iWork who?Remember a few days ago, when Apple announced at its annual developer conference that its iWork apps (Pages, Numbers, and Keynote) will now work on Windows systems in the browser? It seemed like pretty big news at the time, because iPhone users will finally have productivity tools that can be used cross-platform between iOS, Mac OS X, and Windows. Now that development seems almost irrelevant. Competing productivity suites aren’t taken seriously unless they can handle Office file formats.
Microsoft has successfully moved the battlefront back onto Apple’s turf. Microsoft Office is the de facto standard for productivity tools, the one that all other productivity suites are measured against. The competition is taken seriously only if it can go toe to toe with Microsoft Office in terms of features, and if it can handle Microsoft Office file formats without jacking things up.
Pages, Numbers, and Keynote are all very nice applications capable of getting the job done, but they’re not in the same league as Microsoft Office. What’s more, the iWork apps cost money. Office Mobile for iPhone apps are free for Office 365 subscribers.
So what about the iPad?Office Mobile is designed to be used on the iPhone, and Microsoft is not offering a version optimized for the larger screens on the iPad series. When I asked my Microsoft contact if the company planned to optimize Office Mobile for the iPad in the future, the response mimicked Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer’s recent assertion that there is no need: The iPad has a full browser, and users can simply use the Office Web Apps through SkyDrive.
I disagreed with Ballmer when he made that statement, and I still disagree with Microsoft’s stance. Office Web Apps are great in a pinch, but they’re no match for native iOS apps. The OneNote app on the iPad, for instance, is significantly easier to use than its Web equivalent. Microsoft should recognize this, drop the Office Web Apps pretense, and develop native iOS versions of the rest of the Office suite.
Businesses rely on Microsoft Office. Consumers rely on Microsoft Office. By offering Office Mobile for iPhone, Microsoft is pulling the rug out from under its rivals. It’s also adding more value to Office 365, and it’s ensuring that Office remains the de facto standard productivity suite—whether businesses and consumers choose Windows or not.
Set A Screen Saver As The Desktop Background On Your Mac
Here’s how to go about using a screen saver as the desktop background.
Make sure to keep that panel open while doing the following steps.

As soon as you press Enter, you will see the selected screen saver replacing your current background image. As is the norm for screen savers, it will be an animated one that you can see moving behind the icons on your desktop.
In order to keep that screen saver as the desktop background on your Mac, you must not close the Terminal window that you used to issue the command. It must remain open for as long as you wish to see a screen saver as the background image on your machine.
As soon as you close the Terminal window, the screen saver will be replaced with your old static desktop background.
The best thing you can do here is minimize the Terminal window so that it does not affect your other work windows, and you can still see your chosen screen saver as your background.

NoteAs you can see in the last example above, when you add the comma, you should use the present participle form of the verb (the “-ing” form: “flying”) instead of the base form (“fly”) after “as well as.”
When you need a comma before “as well as”While the comma can be optionally added in the contexts discussed above, there’s one context where you must add a comma. This is when you use “as well as” straight after the subject of the sentence
The subject is the noun, pronoun, or phrase representing the person or thing that carries out the action of the verb. You can create a compound subject with a coordinating conjunction like “and” or “or.” But it’s not correct to do the same with “as well as”:
Patryk and Karl
are coming to the party.
Patryk as well as Karl
are coming to the party.
“As well as” should not be used to create a compound subject. You can fix this error by simply changing “as well as” to “and,” as above.
If you want to retain the “as well as” phrase, you need to add commas around it, making it parenthetical. And you need to make sure you still have subject-verb agreement, since the “as well as” phrase no longer counts as part of the subject. The singular noun “Patryk” needs the singular verb form “is”:

Remember that, as in other cases, this places less emphasis on what comes after “as well as.” Here, the statement is mainly about Patryk; Karl is just mentioned in passing. If that’s not what you intend, use “and” instead.
No comma before “as well as” when making a comparisonThere’s another, more literal use of the phrase “as well as”: using it to make a comparison such as “I ski as well as my sister.” When you’re using “as well as” to make a comparison like this, you should never add commas:
I ski, as well as my sister.
I ski as well as my sister. [We ski equally well.]
I, as well as my sister, ski. [We both ski. No comparison is being made.]

If you use “as well” in this way, follow your own instincts about whether to add a comma:

If you insert “as well” in the middle of a sentence as an interrupter (a phrase that interrupts the flow of the sentence to qualify or emphasize something), then you should add commas both before and after it (not just one comma). What is POP3 (Post Office Protocol 3)?
