Perks for Global Accessibility Awareness DayGlobal Accessibility Awareness Day is observed on May 18. To honor the occasion, Apple will publish a curated selection of apps and entertainment in its content stores. Physical stores like Apple Carnegie Library will feature a Today at Apple session with sign language performer and interpreter Justina Miles.

Ios 17 Should Really Include This One Feature
I have been an iPhone user for a long time, and as much as I enjoy using iOS, there are many things that it lacks; and no, I’m not talking about home-screen customisation, or an app drawer. Now, with WWDC 2023 looming on the horizon, and the prospect of iOS 17, I have been thinking about the features Apple might be bringing to the iPhone this year. And, there’s one iOS 17 feature for which I have my fingers crossed.
iMessage: The One Thing It LacksiMessage has evolved considerably over the years, and with iOS 16, it saw some major updates — undo send, editing messages, replies… the works. It basically has most features to call itself a proper messaging app, and a WhatsApp alternative.
However, there is one feature that’s conspicuously missing from iMessage’s arsenal — chat lock.
Most messaging apps on iPhone support Face ID authentication to allow users access to the app. In fact, WhatsApp is now rolling out a feature thats allows users to lock individual chats in WhatsApp. Now that’s useful.
App Locking, and Why iMessage Should Support ItThe idea of locking apps isn’t new or novel. It has existed on Android for years, and apps on iPhone have had Touch ID (and now) Face ID locks for a while as well. Surprisingly, however, Apple hasn’t felt the need to add a feature such as this to iMessage.

It’s not even unprecedented at this point. The stock Photos app on iOS now uses Face ID to authenticate a user before allowing them to open the Hidden folder and the Recently Deleted folder within the app, so bringing this functionality over to the Messages app shouldn’t be too out of the way for the company either.
What’s more, the ability to lock chats in iMessage will make the app even more useful for people who prefer keeping their personal chats under an additional layer of security. You will be able to simply lock the chats you don’t want anyone else to be able to read (or reply to), and you can safely hand over your iPhone to anyone without worrying about them snooping around on it.
Active WidgetsEven though the ability to lock iMessage chats is one of my most wished-for features in iOS 17, there are plenty of other features that are expected to come with the next iteration of the iPhone operating system. Many of which are really exciting as well.
iPhone’s widgets are much better, at least visually, than widgets on Android. And though there are many apps that don’t yet have widgets on the iPhone (looking at you, Slack), the ones that do, look really good on the home screen.
However, functionally, the iPhone’s widget system is quite lacking, especially in contrast to Android widgets. Where this shows most, is in the fact that widgets on iPhone are static… very much so.
Case in point, the Spotify widget. In my opinion, Spotify’s widget should allow me to do more than just acting like a shortcut to the recently played section of the Spotify app. I could have done as much with Siri Shortcuts as well.
Active Widgets, if Apple deems them “ready” for the iPhone, would make widgets a lot better on iOS 17. Imagine the possibilities: a Spotify widget that shows an actual “now playing” screen, maybe even with seek and track controls! If that sounds too good to be true, let me bring to your attention the Android widget for Spotify, which does these things.
For one, there’s the rumor about Apple Maps directions showing up straight on the Lock Screen. However, I’m not too excited about that, because Apple Maps works really poorly in India most of the time, and I always use Google Maps for navigation.
However, the rumors also suggest that among the updates to Apple Music, will be the ability to display song lyrics straight on the lock screen. This does make me happy, because it will make my personal/solo concerts where I sing to myself and no-one else, much easier and better. No longer will I accidentally say “all the lonely Starbucks lovers” while listening to Blank Space on repeat.
Special Mention: Sideloading AppsSideloading apps on iPhone has been a dream to many people, for many years. However, with the EU’s legislation about third-party app stores, it seems Apple is going to let iPhone users install apps on their iPhones without going through the App Store. That’s great.
So why is this is a special mention? Well, since the legislation has been passed by teh European Union, Apple is likely to keep the sideloading feature limited to iPhones in Europe, which means the rest of the world is unlikely to see the benefits of being able to use other app stores, or straight up IPA files to install apps on their devices.
Bring Me the Features, Apple!Apple is notoriously late at introducing features to the iPhone. You might claim that it’s because the company “waits to implement the feature perfectly” before rolling it out, but that claim falls apart when you look at the sheer number of bugs that iOS users have been facing over the last few years.
Apple should really work on implementing quality features within iOS. Things like locking chats with Face ID are a definite must-have in this day and age of messaging apps rolling out features like there’s no tomorrow.

WhatsApp is the biggest messaging platform in the world. With over 1.6 billion monthly active users, none of WhatsApp alternatives can come even close to beating it. However, that doesn’t mean that WhatsApp is the best messaging app on the market. The app is still missing several features that other messaging apps offer. In this article, we are going to take a look at 17 features that are still missing from WhatsApp in 2023.
Features Missing from WhatsApp in 2023There are several reasons why WhatsApp is slow to introduce new features. Since it supports a plethora of different devices, it needs to ensure that its updates are not breaking the experience. WhatsApp has to work extra hard to keep experience the same across devices and platforms.
Also, since it has a huge user-base, the company understands that not all its users are going to be tech-savvy. So, it has to walk the fine line of introducing new features and keeping the experience simple.
And while I understand the company’s problems, it can do better when it comes to releasing new features. So, we are going to talk about the features that are missing in WhatsApp and hope that the company will release them in the future.
1. Message SchedulingIn such a case, you can either write it down or set a reminder. While all those things work, it would be great if you could just schedule the message. Thankfully, there are third-party apps that you can use to schedule messages on WhatsApp.
That said, the third-party solutions are never as good as native the one. I just hope that WhatsApp will release this feature sooner rather than later.
2. Hiding Profile Pictures from Specific ContactWhile WhatsApp allows you to hide your stories from specific contacts, the feature does not apply to your profile picture. Changing your profile picture is like broadcasting to your contact list that you are actively using WhatsApp. Many users, including me, don’t want that. It would be great if we could keep our profile pictures private from selected contacts.
3. Permission Require Before Sending Messages to Unknown Contact 4. Mute Individual Users in WhatsApp GroupOne of the Twitter tricks that I love is the ability to mute an individual, so I don’t get notifications of their tweets. It’s a great way to ignore someone without unfollowing them. In WhatsApp, you can mute both individual and group chats, but sadly, you cannot mute an individual inside a group chat.
I hate using Facebook Messenger, but I do love the chat head feature that allows me to easily dismiss the chats in a bubble, and keep on using my smartphone. Since WhatsApp is owned by Facebook, I don’t know why this feature is still not available on WhatsApp.
You can use third-party apps to get chat head bubbles for WhatsApp. But again, a native execution will be better than third-party ones. It seems that Android 11 will introduce chat bubbles support for all messaging apps.
6. Cross-Platform Chat Backups
One of the biggest flaws of WhatsApp is its inability to transfer chats when you switch your mobile platform from Android to iOS or vice versa. I use both Android and iOS devices and switch between them constantly.
And let me tell you, it’s a pain to lose your chats when you make the switch. All those conversations, gone! There are hacks and third-party apps that you can use, but they don’t work perfectly. WhatsApp should make this transition easier.
7. Dual-Account SupportMost Android smartphones and modern iPhone support two SIMs. But WhatsApp still lets you run only one account on a device. This stops me from using a personal account for people close to me, and a public one for everyone else.
8. Encrypted Cloud Backups
While your chats on WhatsApp are end-to-end encrypted, your chat backups are not. Whether you are backing up chats on your Google Account or iCloud, if someone gets hold of your account, they can easily read your entire message history. Now that’s a scary proposition, isn’t it? It’s 2023, and we should have encrypted cloud backups of our chat.
9. Do-Not-Disturb ModeWhatsApp doesn’t have any built-in do not disturb mode. Sometimes when I am working, I do not want to enable DND on my entire phone, rather just on WhatsApp, so I am not disturbed by constant message notifications. People need a break from messaging from time-to-time, and it would be great if they can just enable DND mode for a few hours.
10. Individual Chat LockWhile you can lock WhatsApp using the built-in biometric lock or an app lock app, you cannot lock individual chats. Some chats are more private than others, and it would be great if we can add an extra security level.
11. Stand-Alone Desktop and iPad AppLet me just say this outright I hate the WhatsApp web app. The desktop app that they offer is just a wrapper of the web app. And they don’t even offer that for iPad.
I would love a Telegram like desktop app experience, where my desktop app is not dependent on the mobile app to function. It will not only make the experience smoother but will also ensure that the desktop apps are not being treated as second class citizens.
12. Self-destructing messages on WhatsAppThis might not be a popular feature, but I know many users will love the ability to send self-destructing messages on WhatsApp that automatically deletes when the recipient has read them.
13. Leave Group without Announcing It 14. Improve Group Features and Admin ControlsWhen it comes to groups, Telegram is the king. Not only you can add more members, but you also have more control. You can do things like restricting members from sending photos and gifs, giving them a timeout before they can send messages, and more. WhatsApp should bring these Telegram features.
15. Send Uncompressed Photos and VideosI hate sharing photos and videos on WhatsApp because it drastically reduces the quality by compressing them. I know you can attach them as files to prevent compression, but it would be better if users didn’t have to use any hacks.
WhatsApp should also increase the file size limit from 100 MB. WhatsApp alternatives like Telegram, allow us to send 1GB files and WhatsApp is still stuck at 100 MB.
16. Call RecordingI have kept this feature so low on the list just because I know WhatsApp is never going to introduce it. Call Recording is illegal in many countries, and that’s why native call recording is absent on most audio calling apps. You can use third-party apps to record calls on WhatsApp, but the success rate varies depending on the device you are using.
WhatsApp can include a feature, where if both parties agree, the call recording can start. This will ensure that nobody is recording calls without permission, and still provide the feature to everyone.

Expanded Choice of Default AppsAfter a long wait, Apple has finally allowed users to choose their default email, browser, and music app via iOS 14 updates. While it is a welcome move, it is far from complete. It would be better if the tech giant expands the list to include other categories of apps like calendar and messaging.
2. Native Sleep Timer for Apple Music
While there is no denying the fact that Apple Music is feature-rich, the lack of a native sleep timer is hard to explain. As most music lovers like to listen to relaxing songs or white noise before hitting the bed, the absence of an integrated sleep timer in Apple Music is beyond anyone’s guess.
Though iOS does offer a way to set a sleep timer in Apple Music via the stock Clock app, which we explained in our linked guide, the process is not intuitive. So, I would like to see Apple integrate a native sleep timer into the Music app in iOS 15.
3. Set Any Song As iPhone Ringtone with EaseIf you can download any song on your iPhone for offline listening, why can’t you set it as your iPhone ringtone after a bit of fine-tuning? Unlike Android, iOS still doesn’t offer a simple way to set your favorite song as a ringtone. While there are some workarounds, the tedious process seems to turn off most users.
4. Disappearing iMessages/ Auto-Delete MessagesSome messages do not need to stick around forever, especially private messages or light-hearted conversations. The ability to set messages to auto-delete after a defined duration not only offers more security and privacy in iOS 15 but helps keep your iMessage inbox uncluttered as well.
I love the disappearing messages feature as it offers me the flexibility to wipe out personal messages automatically at the preferred time. Besides, it will also allow me to keep other messaging apps like WhatsApp and Signal clutter-free. As most messaging apps have got the disappearing messages feature, it would be cool if iMessage gets it sooner than later.
5. Delete Accidentally Sent iMessagesGiven how important this feature is, it would be nice if Apple adds the ability to delete accidentally sent messages to iMessage on iOS 15 and iPadOS 15. Then if you ever happen to send a message mistakenly to anyone, you can recall it to ward off the embarrassment.
6. Chat Wallpapers for iMessageCustomizing the wallpaper of personal chats is something I have always appreciated. With a solid library of beautifully designed wallpapers (in line with WhatsApp’s offerings) at your disposal, it feels great to have different chat wallpapers for contacts and groups. Even if you aren’t into customization, you would appreciate this feature in iMessage on iOS 15.
7. Better Control over Photo Widgets 8. Continue to Use Apps Even When Siri is ActiveOne of the highlights of iOS 14 is the intuitive and compact Siri UI. Unlike before, Siri no longer takes over the entire screen (you can still make Siri go fullscreen if you wish), a welcome move from a user-experience perspective. However, you still can’t interact with apps when Siri is active, which is a disappointment.
At times, I feel the need to continue to use apps even when Siri is active, especially when taking notes or browsing the Internet. While it might not be a big deal for many, I think fixing this little quirk would be a long way to make Siri more efficient.
9. Change App Icons on Home ScreenInstead, I would be glad to have a native option built right into the Settings app to change app icons to my heart’s liking. It would also be amazing if third-party apps come with a handful of app icons and allow users to choose them from the Settings app itself.
10. Change Wallpapers AutomaticallyNo matter how eye-catching a wallpaper is, it tends to appear dull after a day or two. And that’s when we wish to have the ability to change the wallpaper quickly without having to dig into the Settings app. On that note, wouldn’t it be super cool if Apple added a native option to change home screen/lock screen wallpapers automatically? From what I can tell, many of us would like to see that feature in iOS 15.
11. Customize App Library 12. Ability to Leave Blank Space on Home ScreenThe times when I want to perfectly customize the home screen, the one roadblock that comes my way or tends to restrict my creativity is the lack of ability to leave out blank space on the home screen. Yeah, I’m talking about the same trick that Android offers.
Though there are invisible widgets to create blank space, they don’t offer the ideal solution. Considering iOS 14 has already opened the gate for customization, adding this neat little customization feature in iOS 15 may not be a big ask for Apple.
