Learning Life Lessons Through Experience

Priyanka says that as the firstborn in her big family, she had to be the role model for her siblings and her dozen other cousins. She recalls, “Be Prim and Proper! I was only six years old when I was told to – act mature!”

Priyanka tells that fast forward, in hindsight, she completely lost her childhood. The cycle continued until she had nothing left to offer, and all these years, she recounts no one ever asking her if she is OK? 

Hence, two years ago, Priyanka decided to break free of the chains of perfection.

She views that how somebody shows up at home is identical to how they will show up at work. This was a turning point for her in her leadership journey.

Experiential Learning Program Through Self-Awareness

Priyanka states that DX’s core objective in any training is to elicit self-awareness. She believes DX’s 6-stage methodology is the only experiential learning program where participants play themselves. 

Priyanka notes that this makes the learning process extremely efficient, and the learnings are immediately applicable. The approach is instrumental because the experience is repeated every time, and the participant becomes even more self-aware.  

She elucidates that combined with the growth-mindset, this self-discovery encourages participants to create positive leadership habits, knowing that they can change and then understand what they need to change to better themselves and those they influence.

Priyanka remarks that women’s core DNA is ingrained to dedicate their lives to others, parents, husbands, or kids. She denotes that thinking for themselves as a woman is probably the most selfish act. 

Priyanka passionately believes that a woman has the power to shake the world, but before that, it is imperative to shake the myths that make the possible impossible for them. She points out that the idea of women inferior to men is absurd. She says, “When a man is born of a woman, how can he be superior and she inferior?”.

Priyanka feels that being a woman of colour has its challenges; women continuously battle to stay ahead of the times and cannot afford to sit on their laurels even for a day. She recalls that it took her a while to learn that one does not make progress by standing on the sidelines, whimpering, and complaining. Instead, by implementing ideas, one can make progress.

Emphasis on the Soft Elements of Leadership with Technology

Priyanka agrees with the prediction that AI will also lead to a greater emphasis on the “soft” elements of leadership — the personality traits, attitudes, and behaviours that allow individuals to help others achieve a common goal or shared purpose.

Recognizing Empathy for Transformational Leadership

According to Priyanka, the most critical and vital attributes for every transformational leader are to prepare for 2023, cut through the fog, permit to let go of the past, and support employee efforts to think expansively about the changes most likely to create and capture value in the future.

More Dot Holders Can Become Stakers With These New Developments

With the most recent proposal, Polkadot has shown that it is committed to preserving the value of all DOTs on the network. Referendum 78 is a proposal that was put forth by Polkadot that would allow for the establishment of nomination pools on Polkadot.

Stakers of various amounts would be able to take part in the network’s development with the help of this nomination pool. If this proposal is approved, the Polkadot network will gain functionality that is already accessible on Kusama. But what is currently obtainable on Polkadot for stakers?

The current situation of DOT staking

To avoid runtime unbounded processing, the maximum number of users was set to 22,500. This was done by employing a complex yet ingenious algorithm to settle on the collection of active validators and ensure that stake is fairly distributed among them. 

While the threshold for being a nominator was merely 10 DOT, only the top 256 nominators per validator were counted toward the rewards computation (based on their stake).

Because of this, the required minimum stake to get rewards was not a fixed value (like 10 DOT as stipulated by the protocol) and could be far greater than the present minimum investment of 171 DOT.

What nomination pools could bring

By utilizing Nomination Pools, the time required to determine prizes would remain consistent regardless of the total number of nominators. 

Nomination pools would be regarded as a single nominator, and the stake would be calculated separately from the stake of each individual in the pool.

In addition, the minimum stake to join a pool would be reduced to just one DOT, making staking considerably more accessible to DOT holders. Also, 200 DOTs would be the requirement to form a pool with this new proposal.

The passage of Referendum 78 would have far-reaching consequences, allowing holders of DOTs of any size to stake and collect rewards on their DOTs.

More holders would be encouraged to stake their tokens in order to help safeguard the network. Since buyers would expect to earn a better return on their DOT token investments, this might also lead to increased buying pressure on DOT.

DOT sees an uptick

Looking at the DOT chart in a 12-hour time frame, it could be observed that the price increased. The asset ended the prior trading session up by more than 8%. As of this writing, it had risen over 1% in the current trading session and was trading at roughly $6.5.

The zone between $6.0 and $5.6 was clearly identified as support, and it was also evident that this level had been tried but held. The short Moving Average (yellow line) that had been acting as resistance was now turning into support and will continue to do so if the current uptrend holds.

If the present price trend holds, the resistance level between $6.5 and $6.8 might be tested shortly. Overlooking the market movements and acting as a resistance level was the long Moving Average (blue line).

If DOT can overcome the current resistance, as the yellow line has been broken, the blue line may also flip to support around $7.

Java Is Dead? Not According To These Enterprises

The date May 23rd marked 20 years since the Java programming language made its humble launch following a four-year development effort. In that time, the language gas grown, imploded, been declared dead almost as many times as the mainframe. It is now enjoying a renaissance under Oracle’s stewardship.

Googling “Java is dead” brings back millions of results, although there are almost as many people refuting it as declaring it. In the last few years, Oracle has put a lot of resources behind the language to help close all the zero-day exploits and harden the language.

Below are some of the major apps you may not realize were actually written in Java, but you will see that they are and the reasoning for choosing it from the developers. This is far from a complete list, but it does cover a lot of products, including ones you might use every day.

While many of the projects listed below use a mixture of languages, in the case of Hadoop, the whole thing is written in Java. Doug Cutting, creator of Apache Hadoop and former chairman of The Apache Software Foundation, said this via e-mail:

“Java offers a good compromise between developer productivity and runtime performance. Developers benefit from a simple, powerful, type-safe language with a wide range of high quality libraries. Performance is generally good enough. When it falls short, native code has been used to keep overall performance in line with C and C++.

“Some hate Java and complain that another language would have been a better choice, but every language has its detractors. The fact that Hadoop has been widely adopted shows that Java was a reasonable choice.”

Not only is Hadoop written in Java, so is MapReduce.

Twitter started out as a Ruby on Rails application and was the poster child for what RoR could do. Unfortunately, it soon became the poster child for what RoR couldn’t do, and that’s scale. It’s not that Rails doesn’t scale by itself, but it doesn’t handle requests for live data, like searching by hashtags, very well.

The result was a growing number of instances where we saw the “Fail Whale,” an error page that said the service was overloaded. In 2010, Twitter began a major overhaul of its systems. It changed its back-end from MySQL to a real-time version of Lucene and switched from Rails to Java server it calls Blender.

The move to a JVM was driven by both performance needs and developer needs, the company told InfoQ. “The primary driver is honestly encapsulation, so we can iterate faster as a company. Having a single, monolithic application codebase is not amenable to quick movement on a per-team basis.”

The Squarecredit card reader for smartphones and tablet-based point of sale system is a mishmash of languages, using the appropriate language at the place it is needed. That includes Ruby, C++ and Objective-C. The payment stack, which is the important part, uses Java and the third-party API layer uses JRuby and Node.js.

Bob Lee, chief technology officer at Square and a former engineer at Google, told Wired in 2013“Java is really the only choice when it comes to the requirements for a company like ours — extreme performance requirements and extreme scalability requirements. There is no viable alternative.”

Netflix has transitioned from sending DVDs in the mail to consumers to offering on-demand streaming video via TVs, DVD players, game consoles and media boxes like Roku. That means a back-end architecture to handle it all. Netflix handles 2 billion content requests per day with Java-driven architecture.

“The vast majority of the services running within our architecture are built on Java and the Java Virtual Machine [JVM],” Netflix delivery engineering manager Andrew Glover told Silvae Technologies, a European development consultancy. “We have thousands of Java processes running all the time, yet as we grow we don’t have huge infrastructure challenges. We also have a lot of open source tools that are Java-based, which makes it easy to monitor, upgrade, and scale our services.”

“Java is the glue that ties our legacy software capabilities together, and provides a cross-platform modular framework for a collection of unrelated tools and capabilities via the NetBeans platform,” a NASA developer only identified by his first name, Nick, told the developer publication JAXenter.

“Java enables me to deliver solutions that are cross-platform, performant and intuitive all at a low cost for the software development life cycle. Like Nick said, the Java ecosystem makes integrating the existing legacy tools straight forward, while JavaFX and the NetBeans Platform allow for modern reusable attractive interfaces,” said developer Sean P.

Oracle has two Fusion product lines, enterprise applications and middleware. The middleware is a Java framework called Application Development Framework (ADF), which has a lot of design patterns and automates a lot of processes involved in application development. The apps include CRM, financials, compliance, HR, procurement, project portfolio management and SCM.

The apps were written in ubiquitous Javarather than a proprietary coding language to allow organizations to “tap into existing in-house technical skills rather than seek expensive outside specialists.” Using Java and SOA, they have industry standard interfaces rather than proprietary ones.

While your standard Web server services up either static or dynamic HTML Web pages, Tomcat is specifically designed from the ground-up to serve as a Java Servlet engine. It uses the Java Servlet API to execute Java servlets for building dynamic websites. Since its mission is Java servlets, it made sense to write the whole thing in Java. Geronimo is a more enterprise-oriented platform

David Jencks, Project Management Committee (PMC) member for Apache Geronimo, said Java was the only option at the time the project started. “Scala might be a plausible alternative to Java itself, but it had not been invented when either project was started, and choosing Scala over Java would likely reduce the pool of potential contributors by at least 99%. Similar considerations apply to other JVM-based languages,” he said via email.

Mark Thomas, PMC member for Apache Tomcat, said, “I agree that for both Tomcat and Geronimo Java was (and still is) the only choice. More generally, it has been my experience that familiarity of the developers with the language concerned is a much greater factor in the success of a project than the actual language. I have seen plenty of projects struggle because of a decision to implement it using a ‘better’ language and/or technology stack that the development team was unfamiliar with.”

Notch wrote the whole thing in Java and the game is modifiable by players, so they can write Java code to create their own unique play landscape for others. The result is kids are learning to make mods and there are Minecraft workshops where 10 to 14 year old kids gather to learn Java coding, to the amazement of one Oracle developer whose kid attended a workshop.

Notch has said many times at game development conferences he went with Java because he knew it and others knew it, so mods were easy to make. He told a Game Developer Conference panel it was the language he “was most productive at.”

The closest we have to this philosophy is Hanson Robotic’s Sophia. This AI robot lays its behavior on a library of pre-prepared responses which makes it a chatbot rather than a conversational equal. If you interact with Alexa or Siri, you will notice that AI has a long way to go before achieving the Aristotle level of bonding.

On the other hand, there are people who develop bonds of machines like vacuum-cleaning and lawn-trimming machines by giving them pet names. Not just utility machines, Sony’s Aibo robot dog is a life-like pet robot that owners have a great bond with. Such stories are evidence that we are capable of having emotional bonds with robots if they don’t show any signs of threat.

If all goes well, many of us will follow Frank’s path and accept the fact that robots can make for good companions. Humans are social animals and social interaction is rewarding in our own ways. In this manner, it seems possible that people who lack human relations will benefit from a robotic bond and address the need for social interaction like providing physical comfort during distress, emotional support, and enjoyable social exchanges. Maybe expecting an Aristotle-defined bond is an expectation set too high, but a co-existing future with robots is inevitable.

Tesla Cars Become Autonomous Overnight

Earlier this month, many Teslas were given a self-driving mode upgrade , and this makes for a SUPER fun Halloween costume. Unless you have a car costume lying around, you’ll have to make your own (the internet is your friend) . But once it’s done, you can run around anywhere claiming the car is driving itself and you have no control (also a great way to get out of boring conversations and not offend the other person–it’s the car, not you).

The Rise of the Machines has begun—fittingly, via an overnight wireless global “awakening.”

That’s right, owners of Tesla Model S and Model X electric vehicles woke up today to cars suddenly empowered to drive themselves down the road. The company’s software update—Tesla Version 7.0, installed via WiFi—includes its new Autopilot technology, which imparts a degree of autonomy to the sleek, high-tech cars. Tesla CEO Elon Musk announced the update via conference call yesterday, stressing that it was still in beta and that drivers will not be able to completely disengage themselves from the act of driving. “Because the software is still at an early stage, it’s important people exercise caution,” Musk said. “In the long term, drivers will not need to keep their hands on the wheel. Eventually there won’t be wheels or pedals.”

The system uses a suite of sensors installed in cars built beginning in September 2014, including a forward radar, a forward-looking camera, 12 long-range ultrasonic sensors, and braking and steering controls. Coupled with the car’s GPS, the hardware now permits the cars to steer within lanes, change lanes on command—via a tap of the turn signal—and modulate speed relative to vehicles in front of it, including braking to a full stop and automatically re-accelerating. Tesla already has one of the smoothest, most capable automatic cruise control systems on the road, and this enhancement promises a big reduction in driver workload—if not the actual ability to pick up a newspaper and just check out while your car chauffeurs you to the office.

It should be noted, of course, that other manufacturers currently have systems that are very close to Tesla’s autopilot. Mercedes, Acura, Volvo, and Audi can all manage steering down the highway and automatic braking and acceleration, via their lane-centering technology and adaptive cruise control. Driving the most recent Acuras in cruise control require nothing more than keeping light pressure on the wheel. If you let go for more than a few seconds, it will flash an alert and eventually deactivate. Tesla’s system works similarly—if not driver engagement is detected, it will flash an alert and eventually slow to a stop and activate the hazard lights.

Driving is all about managing treacherous, millisecond-long transitions, which we humanoids tend to do automatically.

Another distinction from other semi-autonomous systems is that the cars will collect data about their use, to refine and enhance the systems. That’s critical, because the real challenge for autonomous vehicles won’t be in the basics—cruising down the road and changing lanes on their own—but in the margins, the moments where the systems are challenged or stymied. This can occur with unclear lane markings, inclement weather, or dicey lane changes. What happens, for instance, if your lane is sitting still but the cars next to you are racing by and you want to shoot over? Will the car engage Ludicrous Mode acceleration to rocket you into the next lane, or sit there forever waiting for a gaping hole? Driving is all about managing those treacherous, millisecond-long transitions, which we humanoids tend to do automatically—including appropriately second-guessing ourselves midway through a move, or reacting to other drivers who are similarly tentative, or overzealous.

It will be fun to watch this progression toward seamless interactions between man and machine. Tesla just nudged us a little bit closer to that future.
