As chronicled by PCGamer, there are at least a handful of players who have sought maximum realism by either mapping out the game’s controls to real instruments, or making Guitar Hero-style approximations for a more authentic sliding experience. Twitter user Dan Lew has simply tied in the game’s control to a PC microphone, playing a real trombone in his room and getting the game’s control scheme to match the pitch and activate when sound was playing.

Here it looks like the game designers sacrificed a bit of realism for the sake of playing recognizable tunes. Twitch streamer Kupobucks finds the upper register of Trombone Champ‘s range nearly impossible to hit, since real trombones rarely go more than an octave above middle C, and (jokingly) asks the game developers to make a “pro mode” to transpose the game’s songs more realistically.

Rudeism, a staple name in the highly specific world of wacky custom game controls, gave it a shot as well. His version uses an ultrasonic sensor and microphone to map out a real trombone slide and audible notes to the game’s controls, which should eliminate lag and create more consistent motion.

But it’s not ideal, because the system can only use a little less than half of the real trombone’s full range of motion, and thus its actual musical range. It’s also worth pointing out that Rudeism is having a really tough time actually keeping up with the notes the game shoots at the player. That’s probably a combination of factors: one, you would need to be a real, skilled trombone player to accurately reproduce the notes the game simulates without going into hypoxia. And two, the music featured in the game is written more in a direct melody trumpet style, not the usual tenor-baritone role real trombones are typically used for in orchestra and jazz music.

That isn’t stopping plenty of other players from giving it a shot. The ever-popular Arduino is a good place to start: Greig Stewart created a tiny trombone simulacrum out of a kazoo, and needs only a range-spotting camera and a microphone to get the input into the game. As a bonus, the sound of a kazoo is perhaps more thematically appropriate for the ever-present goofiness of Trombone Champ‘s style.

Real trombonist (not tromboner) Hung Truong might have solved some of the game’s transposing issues by using a soprano trombone, with a musical key and range closer to a trumpet. He used an esp32 microcontroller, an air pressure sensor, and a distance sensor to cobble together a system that combines some of the techniques above. The air pressure sensor is actually resting inside the trombone’s bell!

His technique probably combines the most realism with the most musically-accurate scale of all these attempts, but it’s clearly difficult even for a real musician to keep the pitch control steady. He’s working on a second version with more accurate sensors.

You can replicate pretty much all of the above systems thanks to these DIY makers’ guides and instructions, such as Github repositories for microphone input. Of course, buying a $500 instrument and a bunch of custom components in order to play a meme game might not be the wisest use of your disposable income.

Virtual Coaching With Real Results For School Leaders

As a school leader coach, I work one-on-one with principals to help them build crucial new job skills. Typically, that means traveling to different schools and working with principals in person.

Because of Covid, however, my colleagues and I coached virtually for a full year, and despite my adamant opposition to virtual coaching prior to the pandemic, we learned valuable lessons about how to make it effective.

Time Spent on What Matters Most

When my colleagues and I started coaching virtually, we immediately noticed that we spent more time working directly with principals without adding extra hours to the workweek. First, we were able to schedule meetings back-to-back because virtual coaching avoids the extra time involved with traveling between schools, checking in and out of offices, finding parking, or waiting behind the student drop-off line. Because we didn’t have to travel, we were also able to accommodate tricky scheduling demands by meeting with principals in tight time slots of 25 minutes here and 30 minutes there.

Virtual coaching also made it easy to reschedule. Principles are regularly pulled away at the last minute for emergencies and pressing student issues—especially with the added pressures of contact tracing and Covid safety. Since we weren’t concerned about geographic constraints (i.e., scheduling school visits that are geographically close to one another), we could reschedule a missed coaching meeting the same day or later the same week. Virtual coaching gave us far more flexibility to shift to the principal’s time needs and ultimately meant we spent more time with each leader.

Virtual Planning and Practice

I help principals plan everything from data responses and staff meetings to daylong professional development. During the pandemic, I quickly learned that the phone and a shared Google Doc were all we needed to effectively prepare. Without the need to worry about keeping a mask pulled up tight or paying attention to the interpersonal dynamics of being in the same room, leaders could focus on the work in front of them.

Phone calls also worked great for rehearsals. My colleagues and I help leaders prepare for crucial conversations and tough feedback by rehearsing the execution. Leaders seemed more excited about practicing virtually since they could focus on the words during practice before having to get their body language right, too.

In fact, working virtually pushed me to work more proactively. Instead of relying on observing a meeting first and then offering feedback, I was able to support the principal in the planning stage.

Relationships Work Virtually

When we were forced to switch to virtual support, I was worried about the impact on relationships. But my colleagues and I quickly realized that we could form close, trusting bonds despite never having met the client in person. Our end-of-year evaluations indicated that principals felt the same.

To support relationship building, we made time for principals to share more widely than the initial narrow focus of a particular coaching call. Sometimes, we asked them to start a coaching conversation by sharing the high and low of their day. Other times, I included questions that acknowledged what I might not be seeing, like “Is there anything else you want to make sure that I know?” “Is there anything I’m missing about this?” “Is there anything else you want to flag for me?” Leader coaches build relationships—virtually or in person—by being a steady, regular source of honest feedback and partnership.

We also checked in candidly about sustainability. For many school leaders, the pandemic brought extra job pressure and immense stress in addition to family and childcare concerns.

Virtual Observations

When most schools were teaching virtually, it was easy to hop into virtual classrooms to co-observe with principals. But even with many schools back in person, there’s still a lot we can see virtually. Just this week I observed a school leader facilitating professional development. The leader propped up a computer, and I watched the entire training through Google Meet.

Other times, leaders have asked me to listen in on the phone during a leadership team meeting or even video into a teacher coaching session. Many schools are still holding virtual faculty and department meetings even though student-facing work is in person.

Collaboration

Virtual coaching sessions make it easy to loop in others to share expertise or practice a similar skill. There are times when my colleagues and I bring principals together for something they’re all working on—shared expectations on walk-throughs or curriculum implementation, for example. People can join just for the time they’re needed or only for the applicable segments. In-person collaboration would require significantly more coordination and time.

It’s hard to predict the full impact of Covid on schools, including the way we support teachers and school leaders. But at least for now, we’ve learned some valuable lessons about virtual coaching that may help us expand who we can support and how we can help them.

Some people try to cheat the system using automated captcha solvers to complete their work for them. This is closely monitored, and if  workers are caught doing this, they’re banned from the site. What is Current Income (Real Estate Investments)?

Current income is an investment strategy that gives investors exposure to consistent above-average payouts. The most common current income-focused investments are individual securities and real estate investments, which provide short-term payouts, as well as long-term investment appreciation.

Real Estate Investment Trusts (REITs)

Investors looking for regular income from real estate investments can invest directly through developing and acquiring real estate properties or by investing in REITs that consist of real estate properties as their underlying assets. REITs own and manage real estate properties, such as office buildings, residential apartments, shopping malls, vacation homes, warehouses, etc.

Rather than buying or developing real estate properties directly, investors buy shares in the managed portfolio of properties. REITs make money from rental income, sale of properties, commissions from managing properties, service to tenants, etc. The REITs are required to distribute a majority of their net revenues to shareholders either monthly or quarterly, making them an ideal investment opportunity for investors looking for regular income and high yields.

How Investors Make Money from Real Estate Investments

Real estate investments allow investors to earn revenues through a variety of ways, such as rental income and property appreciation. Also, there are different types of real estate investments that investors can invest in, either directly or through REITs. They include residential, commercial, hospitality, farmland, industrial, and retail investments.

Real estate investors earn through the following ways:

1. Capital appreciation

One of the things that real estate investors are keen on when buying a property is whether the property will gain in capital appreciation in the future. Appreciation refers to the increase in the value of a property because of certain factors, such as economic trends, supply and demand, infrastructure, population growth, location, future development plans, etc. that influence its rate.

One of the main factors that influence property appreciation is inflation. There exists a direct correlation between inflation, demand for properties, and price appreciation. When the demand for properties is increasing, property prices go up if the supply is not enough to meet the demand.

Similarly, during periods of high inflation, property prices go up, so do the prices of land and construction materials. Investors who own properties in a given location expect to profit from the price appreciation of their properties when the demand and inflation are high.

2. Rental income from leasing properties to tenants

Owners of real estate properties, such as office buildings, apartments, and warehouses, expect to earn a rental income by letting tenants use the property for an agreed period of time. The rental income may be paid every month, quarterly, annually, or according to the payment period agreed between the property owner and the tenant. Most investors prefer to deal directly with the tenants, while others prefer outsourcing property management to a real estate agent.

From owning real estate properties, the owner or landlord receives net rental income (after deducting expenses). Some of the expenses incurred by property owners include property taxes, maintenance, homeowner association fees, etc.

A real estate property provides its owner with a combination of the utility and the net present value of cash flows it generates relative to what was originally paid for the investment. The rental income provides investors with a margin of safety both in the short term and in the long term.

3. Income from operations

Apart from rental income, property owners also get an opportunity to earn from business operations within the real estate properties. For example, the owner of an office building can offer parking services to tenants and charge them a fee above what they pay as rental income.

In residential properties, property owners can offer laundry facilities and transport services to workplaces for a small fee. Other types of real estate investments, such as hotels, apartments, and warehouses, can also generate additional revenues for their owners by offering a chargeable service to tenants or guests leasing the properties. It provides property owners with an additional income stream to supplement the rental income.

Current Income: Alternatives to Real Estate Investments 1. Dividend-paying stocks

Dividend-paying stocks provide high returns to investors, and the best options are those that are well established and mature. Although the stock market involves a higher risk than the bond market, dividend-paying stocks provide investors with a modest income and an opportunity for long-term appreciation. A majority of dividends are paid out four times per year when the quarterly earnings reports are released, but there are companies that pay dividends annually or semi-annually.

2. Debt income securities

Debt income securities are synonymous with paying consistent fixed income to bondholders. There are dozens of local and international debt offerings that pay fixed periodic interest payments and full payment of the principal amount at maturity.

The interest payments are made annually or semi-annually, and they provide a guarantee to investors looking for regular payouts. An example of a debt income security is Treasury bills, which pay semi-annual interest payments at fixed coupon rates and are backed by the full faith of the US government.

Why Real-Time Background Removal is required?

For many reasons, the background of the video needs to be modified as there are so many other interruptions in the background or the background colour doesn’t suit the person due to which background or the color needs to be modified. So, we use the real-time background replacement technique to substitute the backgrounds and add replace them with the desired content.

Popular background removal techniques

Image clipping path – This technique is used if the subject of the image has sharp edges. All those elements that fall outside the path will be eliminated.

Image cut-out – Here we cut the required region or subject in a frame and remove the background.

Image masking – If the images have frills or fine edges we can use image masking techniques.

Erasing the background – Erasing the background of an image using any different tools

Many famous applications use a background removal technique and replace it with a custom one. Here we are going to implement something similar, but using OpenCV and CVzone.

Let’s start the implementation

Install the required modules.

First, let us check if our webcam is working fine.

The above code pops up a window if you have a webcam, Here the frame size is 640 X 480. So we need to take a note here because the background replacing images should be of the same size as the frame, that is 640 X 480.

Now create the folder inside the project directory here, I am creating a folder with the name ‘BackgroundImages’. You can download any images or any number of images and place them in this directory.

The project structure will look like the image given below:

Let us write a small piece of code in a separate python file to resize all the images in the folder ‘BackgroundImages’ to 640 X 480.

The above code will read the image (jpg) files in the specified folder and resize all the images to 640 X480 at once.

Now we are all set to implement the background replacement technique.

Here in the above module, ‘SelfiSegmentation’ is used to remove the background of the frame and replace it with our images in the directory.

In the above code, we take input from the webcam and also set the frame width to 640 X 480. Then we call SelfiSegmentation() and assign it to a variable called segmentor, and in order to display the frames per second(fps) in the output frames, we use cvzone.FPS() function.

Then we create a list of images present in the BackgroundImages folder and we loop through that list and read each and every image and append it to an empty list. The initial index is set to zero.

Then we stack the images using cvzone.stackImages, here we will get the output of the background replaced image or frames. Then using a simple if statement we assign keys to change the background. For example, if we have 10 background images, as per the above code we can use key “a” or key “d” to change the background of the frames.
