Suggested April 2024 Seven Gorgeous National Parks Where You Can Watch The August Eclipse

John Day Fossil Beds

The painted hills

Scenic striped hillsides. Big blue skies. Around 40,000 fossils. The John Day Fossil Beds just happen to be in a part of the country deemed especially perfect for 2023 eclipse viewing. Eastern Oregon is hot and the Fossil Beds aren’t exactly in a hoppin’ area, so you should come very prepared: stock up on water, snacks, and gas before you go.

How do I get there?

It’s about a 4.5 hour drive from Portland, Oregon.

When is the eclipse?

It should start around 9 am local time, and the sun should go completely dark for around two minutes at 10:20.

Is camping allowed?

Not in the park, but there are other camping options nearby.

Any special events?

The park says plans are still in the works, so keep checking.

Grand Teton National Park

A mountain reflection at Grand Teton.

Grand Teton National Park

String Lake in Grand Teton National Park.

How do I get there?

The park is just a few minutes away from the Jackson Hole Airport. You can also drive a couple hours from Idaho Falls, or take a five-hour car trip from Salt Lake City. If you’re coming from Denver, you’ve got 10 hours on the road.

When is the eclipse?

The eclipse should arrive at around 10:15 am local time and end at 1:00. Totality is expected at 11:34. It will last over two minutes in some parts of the park.

Is camping allowed?

Any special events?

Four designated viewing areas will be staffed by rangers and astronomers.

Congaree National Park

Some of the tallest trees in the Eastern United States.

Congaree National Park boasts amazing hardwood forests and gorgeous hikes. Unfortunately, that dense tree cover means there are very few optimal viewing sites within the park. But if you register for one of their guided eclipse hikes, a ranger will get you to a prime eclipse spot just in time for the big blackout. If you can’t manage to snag one, consider enjoying a vacation in the park before visiting a nearby town to view the eclipse.

How do I get there?

Columbia Metropolitan Airport is just 30 minutes away. Charlotte, NC and Charleston, SC (both of which have major airports) are each a two hour drive.

When is the eclipse?

Totality should start around 2:41 pm.

Is camping allowed?

There are two designated campgrounds (you’ll need to make a reservation) and backcountry camping is allowed with a permit.

Any special events?

The aforementioned guided hikes, as well as staff help at several designated viewing areas.

Blue Ridge Parkway

Courthouse Valley, pictured here, will have the longest stretch of totality.

Wherever you go for the eclipse, you’re probably going to need to do some driving. So why not make that the whole point? Blue Ridge Parkway is a designated “All-American Road”—an official scenic byway, as opposed to all of those unofficial scenic byways—that runs 469 miles. It’s the longest linear park in the country, and it links the Shenandoah National Park and the Great Smoky Mountains National Park. Of course, you can’t expect complete totality along the whole road (how cool would that be) but about 100 miles of it should have a good view. You can figure out what’s going on at different mile markers here. Make sure you’ve got plenty of fuel—you might get stuck in bumper-to-bumper traffic for much of the day.

How do I get there?

You’ll see a total (or quite near total) eclipse at outlooks from milepost 357 to 468. Luckily for out-of-towners, Asheville, NC has exits between mileposts 382 and 393. To get more totality, head south. But here’s a pro-tip: you’ll get up to 90 percent totality as far north as Roanoke, VA. To avoid insane traffic, you might want to fly there instead and only venture as far south as congestion permits.

When is the eclipse?

It varies—this is a long road—but the best stretch of totality is 76 seconds. That’s expected at Courthouse Valley (mile 423.5) at 2:37 pm.

Is camping allowed?

There are three official campgrounds on or close to the path of totality, and another five farther north. Backcountry camping requires a permit.

Any special events?

The designated lookouts will all have staff on hand to help you enjoy your eclipse viewing. And several North Carolina towns along the route have eclipse activities planned.

Great Smoky Mountains National Park

Cades Cove will provide prime viewing.

Maybe you’d rather enjoy the scenic byway before all the eclipse tourists descend? In that case, you can make your way to the western Great Smoky Mountains. The park will have eclipse-centric events going on in three locations.

How do I get there?

The Blue Ridge Parkway, of course! Or drive 60 miles from Asheville, NC.

When is the eclipse?

Totality will sweep through the western portion of the park starting at about 2:33 pm. Some locations will experience totality for around two and a half minutes.

Is camping allowed?

There are many campgrounds, including some near the designated eclipse event locations. Some require reservations. Backcountry camping requires a permit.

Any special events?

The big, ticketed science bonanza (not an official name) at Clingmans Dome is sold out, but cancellations may put some last-minute tickets online. Cades Cove and Oconaluftee will both have informal, staff-guided eclipse viewing activities. You may have to get to these locations on foot due to congestion.

Agate Fossil Beds

You can check out the fossil exhibits while you’re there

If you’re near Nebraska, consider enjoying the eclipse at the Agate Fossil Beds. This national monument is quite close to the center of the totality path—and features some incredible fossils (“Devil’s corkscrews”, anyone?) And as a bonus, the park has put out a call for amateur astronomers to help educate the public: if you’ll be showing up with a telescope and some eclipse viewing know-how, check in with the Chief Ranger beforehand to see how you can chip in. One caveat: the park service says that fire danger is expected to be very high that weekend, so be sure to park only in mowed, designated areas (and definitely don’t smoke).

How do I get there?

The Western Nebraska Regional Airport is just 50 miles southeast of the park entrance.

When is the eclipse?

Totality will arrive around 11:48 am local time, and is expected to last two minutes.

Is camping allowed?

Not within the park, no. But campgrounds and hotels are available nearby.

Any special events?

So many! The park has kid’s activities starting first thing in the morning on Saturday, August 19 (including a toilet paper tube viewer building session). Sunday features a talk from the Kelly Looking Horse family, providing a Native American perspective on the phenomenon, and a night sky program. You can make some sun prints on Monday morning, and catch a reprise of the Kelly Looking Horse family’s talk just before the partial eclipse starts. Astronomers will be available on Sunday and Monday, and food vendors will be around on Sunday and Monday as well (the park doesn’t usually sell food).

Obed Wild & Scenic River

Wild and scenic is right.

“National Wild and Scenic River” might be an even better sounding designation than “official scenic byway.” Hike, kayak, and enjoy over two minutes of totality in some spots.

How do I get there?

The closest airport is 50 miles away in Knoxville, TN.

When is the eclipse?

Totality should occur around 2:30 pm, with the exact start time and length varying along the river.

Is camping allowed?

There’s a reservation-only campground near the river.

Any special events?

The park plans to have organized public viewing events at Obed Visitor Center, Lilly Overlook, and Big South Fork Gateway Visitor Center. The details are still TBD.

For a full list of parks, monuments, and national trails in the path of totality, check out the National Park Service’s website.

15 Best Apple Watch Screen Protectors You Can Buy

Starting at $269, the Apple Watch is not only expensive, but also a very fragile smartwatch, and its most expensive component is undoubtedly the display. The least expensive Apple Watches (both the Apple Watch Series 1 and Series 2), i.e. the Sport variants feature an Ion-X glass that can be easily scratched like the Gorilla glass on your smartphone. Although the more expensive stainless steel variant of the Apple Watch features a sapphire crystal glass which is almost scratch-proof, it’s still prone to shatter due to accidental drops, just like the Sport variants. So, if you’re planning on getting an Apple Watch, we highly recommend you to purchase a good screen protector, in order to avoid running into a situation where you end up paying a hefty sum just to get the damaged screen replaced. Well, there are plenty of options to choose from, and if you’re confused regarding which one to go for, here are the 15 best Apple Watch screen protectors you can buy:

Best Apple Watch Screen Protectors

Note: All the screen protectors we have mentioned below are compatible with both Series 1 and Series 2 Apple Watches.

1. ArmorSuit Military Shield Screen Protector For Apple Watch

This is a film-based screen protector that offers edge-to-edge protection for your Apple Watch’s display. Although it doesn’t offer much in terms of drop protection, this film does a stellar job in resisting scratches on the actual display. Well, as the Watch is often tied to your wrist, the chances of accidentally dropping it are extremely low. However, accidental bumps happen a lot even while you’re simply walking around with the watch tied to your wrist. So, scratch resistance is of higher importance here rather than drop resistance, and the ArmorSuit Military Shield screen protector doesn’t fail to deliver in that regard. Users wouldn’t even know that the screen protector is actually installed, until they look carefully.

2. iXCC Tempered Glass Screen Protector For Apple Watch

If you’re more concerned about drop protection, you should probably get your hands on this tempered glass screen protector manufactured by iXCC. Since it’s 0.3 mm thick, it manages to do a good job in protecting your Apple Watch from scratches, scuffs and scrapes resulting due to minor accidental drops that might occur while tying or removing it from your wrist. However, it’s worth noting that this tempered glass only covers the flat portion of the Apple Watch’s display, thereby making the corners and edges still prone to drops. Therefore, this screen protector is best used along with a protective case installed on the Apple Watch.

3. RinoGear Clear Shield Apple Watch Screen Protector

This is another film-based screen protector that we’ve added to the list, and it offer similar levels of protection just like the ArmorSuit Military Shield that we previously discussed. It covers the screen from edge-to-edge, to make sure that no portion of the screen is exposed to scratches. Although it doesn’t do much in protecting the display from drops, the PET film is good enough to resist scratches and scrapes resulting due to minor bumps, so there are no worries in this regard. Lastly, it comes in a pack of 3 and lifetime replacements are offered by the manufacturer, so that you can get the damaged films replaced without any hassle.

Buy from Amazon: ($7.82)

4. AYAMAYA Full Coverage Tempered Glass Screen Protector For Apple Watch

Next on the list, we’ve a got a screen protector that’s made of 0.3 mm thick tempered glass, in order to make sure the actual display of your shiny new Apple Watch is protected from scratches, scuffs and scrapes resulting due to minor accidental drops. Unlike the tempered glass screen protector that we previously discussed, this one offers edge-to-edge protection and does not expose any portion of your display for all-round protection. Thanks to the oleophobic coating, this screen protector is capable of minimizing smudges resulting due to oil and fingerprints.

Buy from Amazon: ($8.99)

5. Julk TPU Screen Protector Case For Apple Watch

Buy from Amazon: ($8.99)

6. Skinomi TechSkin Full Coverage Screen Protector For Apple Watch

Skinomi is quite popular for manufacturing some great protective films for smartphones, and this one for the Apple Watch is no exception in that regard. The Skinomi TechSkin manages to cover the screen from edge-to-edge, to make sure that no portion of the screen remains exposed to scratches. It’s made of military-grade thermoplastic urethane, so we’ve got no concerns regarding the quality of this screen protector. That being said, it’s not good enough to protect your watch from accidental drops, as it’s not as thick and sturdy as tempered glass. It comes in a pack of 6 and lifetime warranty is provided by the manufacturer for hassle-free replacements.

7. IQ Shield Full Coverage Screen Protector For Apple Watch

This is yet another film-based screen protector that’s featured in this list, and just like almost every other screen protector of a similar type, it manages to do a great job in resisting scratches and minor scrapes on your screen resulting due to accidental bumps. However, it doesn’t help a lot when it comes to drop protection, so if you’re concerned about that, you should probably get your hands on a tempered glass screen protector. It manages to offer edge-to-edge protection as no portion of the screen is exposed.

Buy from Amazon: ($7.85)

8. Atill Tempered Glass Screen Protector For Apple Watch

Next on the list, we’ve got a tempered glass screen protector manufactured by Atill that can withstand impacts due to its thickness. It’s capable of resisting scratches, scuffs and scrapes resulting due to minor accidental drops, so there are no worries in this regard. It’s worth noting that this tempered glass only covers the flat portion of the screen, so the edges and corners still remain exposed, until it’s covered with a protective case. It sports rounded 2.5D edges to provide the user with a seamless scrolling experience, and thanks to the oleophobic layer, it’s capable of resisting fingerprints as well.

Buy from Amazon: ($7.95)

9. SUPTMAX Full Coverage Tempered Glass Screen Protector For Apple Watch

Although this screen protector is also made of tempered glass, it manages to cover the screen from edge-to-edge, without exposing any portion of the screen, thereby protecting the entire display of your shiny new Apple Watch from scratches, scuffs and scrapes resulting due to minor accidental drops and bumps. If drop protection is your top priority, this is one of the best cases that you can go for. As per the manufacturer’s claims, the tempered glass is made from scratch-resistant, ultra tough military-grade material, just in case you were concerned about the quality of the glass used.

Buy from Amazon: ($12.95)

10. Patchworks ITG Plus Apple Watch Tempered Glass Screen Protector

Buy from Amazon: ($12.95)

11. NSR Apple Watch All Round Screen Protector

This one’s quite similar to the Julk screen protector case that we discussed earlier, and it manages wrap around the front portion of the device, to protect the stainless steel/aluminium frame and the display from scratches, scuffs and scrapes resulting due to minor accidental drops. Since it’s made of a soft flexible TPU material, it will be able to withstand shocks and impacts to a certain extent, so there are no worries in this regard. Lastly, it has precise cutouts for all the hardware buttons for quick access.

12. Auneos Full Coverage Tempered Glass Screen Protector For Apple Watch

Next on the list, we’ve got a full coverage screen protector made of tempered glass, that manages to offer edge-to-edge protection without exposing any portion of the Apple Watch’s display. It’s fully capable of protecting the actual display from scratches, scuffs, scrapes and shatter resulting due to accidental bumps and drops, so there are no worries in this regard. Thanks to the oleophobic coating, the screen protector is able to minimize smudges that results due to oil and fingerprints.

Buy from Amazon: ($13.95)

13. JETech Screen Protector Film For Apple Watch

If you prefer film-based screen protectors over tempered glass ones for scratch resistance, you’ll surely enjoy using this one. Although it might not be good enough in protecting the display on your Apple Watch from accidental drops, it does a splendid job in resisting scratches and scrapes resulting due to accidental bumps, which happens much more often than drops. It’s made of Japanese PET film, so we’ve got no doubts regarding the quality of this screen protector. Thanks to the self-healing capabilities, it can eliminate minor scratches on the film all by itself, over time.

Buy from Amazon: ($6.99)

14. Spectre Shield Full Coverage Clear Film For Apple Watch

If you just want to protect your Apple Watch’s display from scratches, you’ll be better off with this film-based screen protector manufactured by Spectre Shield. Pulitzers Consider The National Enquirer

Pulitzers Consider the National Enquirer COM Dean Fiedler’s inquiring mind says, “That’s not journalism.”

When news broke that the National Enquirer would be allowed to compete for a 2010 Pulitzer Prize alongside mainstream outlets like the New York Times and the Washington Post, reaction included celebration.

“It’s official!” blared the supermarket tabloid’s Web site.

On the Huffington Post, Emily Miller blogged, “The Pulitzer Board’s decision to give The Enquirer its rightful place in the competition for the award shows the old guard journalists recognize and respect the importance of the investigation by the paper’s reporters, photographers, and editors.”

Not exactly, says Tom Fiedler, College of Communication dean, who shared two Pulitzer Prizes while at the Miami Herald.

“The fact that they are going to consider it doesn’t alter the fundamental and, I believe, fatal flaw: the ethical foundation on which the National Enquirer gathers its journalism,” says Fiedler (COM’71), referring to the tabloid’s practice of paying its sources for information. “I simply cannot fathom any Pulitzer jury accepting as appropriate the fact that the National Enquirer engages in checkbook journalism. If that becomes the standard, I think the meaning of the Pulitzer Prize would be devalued tragically and precipitously.”

Pulitzer Prizes are awarded in 21 categories — 14 in print and online journalism, as well as in poetry, drama, music, and books of fiction, nonfiction, U.S. history, and biography or autobiography. In each category, seven-member juries, made up of editors, publishers, writers, and educators, examine the entries and offer three nominations to the Pulitzer Prize Board. The board assembles in April at the Columbia School of Journalism, reviews the nominations, and votes on winners. The 2010 Pulitzer winners and nominees will be announced on April 12.

The Pulitzer Board had deemed the Enquirer ineligible because the tabloid described itself as a magazine; magazines and broadcast media cannot enter. But the board changed its tune, accepting the paper’s entries — coverage of the John Edwards sex scandal — in February.

Fiedler has served on two Pulitzer juries.

What they also might be doing is opening the way for what we would consider more respectable magazine journalism, such as the Atlantic or Vanity Fair. So perhaps they’ve decided to let something rise or fall on its merits, as opposed to how often it appeared or where it appeared.

If so, it’s a fatal flaw. I believe you can’t trust journalism that somebody paid for.

Now there’s no question, the National Enquirer did a gotcha. They got John Edwards doing what he was doing. But the end doesn’t justify the means. We have to be able to say that we attained the information by upholding all the ethical standards that journalists believe in. Otherwise it’s not journalism.

It also gives them an opportunity, once they bring it in, to publicly reject it and make a statement about that, too. The Pulitzer Prize cannot allow itself to be tainted.

Occasionally, do they hit on something that looks like journalism? They may. But does that make them journalists? No. They’re entertainers, like the old Police Gazette of the 1930s.

The Enquirer started saying, “They’re trying to shut us out.” Well, it’s not that the mainstream didn’t pay attention. When something like that breaks, you check it out, but you also go into it with the appropriate level of skepticism so you don’t end up spreading a rumor.

What a horrible, horrible thing to happen.

How Google Can Help You Win The Moment

Understanding Google’s latest research on micro-moments and the implications for your marketing

It’s no secret that mobile has dramatically impacted how we do business and how consumers interact with brands online – the latest mobile adoption data indicates that mobile is still on course to overtake fixed internet access and that mobile ad spending accounts for 49% of digital ad spending.

As a result of this mobile shift, Google has conducted some interesting ethnographic research over the last year to explore how consumer behaviour is changing and gain an understanding into the needs of real people. Some of the stand out insights from the research includes:

82% of smartphone users use their phones to influence a purchase decision in a store

62% of smartphone users are more likely to take action right away to solve an unexpected problem or task because they have a smartphone

90% of smartphone users have used their phone to make progress towards a long-term goal or multi-step process while out and about

91% of smartphone users turn to their phone for ideas while doing a given task

Google’s research has led them to the conclusion that consumer decisions don’t happen in a defined, logical order, if they ever did. Instead, they happen at seemingly random times in a consumer’s life – what Google have defined as ‘micro-moments’.

What exactly are ‘Micro-moments’?

Micro-moments are moments when consumers act on a need, e.g. to learn something, do something, discover something, watch something or buy something. They are intent-rich moments where decisions are being made and preferences shaped.

Google recommends marketers consider four key moments and explain the importance of Moments in relation to mobile devices:

“We turn to our phones with intent and expect brands to deliver immediate answers. It’s in these I-want-to-know, I-want-to-go, I-want-to-do, I-want-to-buy moments that decisions are made and preferences are shaped”.

Research presenting the increasing importance of these four ‘Moments’ is summarised in the visual below.

It’s not just Google who are pushing this concept. Forrester analyst Jeffrey Hammond tells us that ‘Consumer Engagement Is Shifting Toward Micro Moments’ whilst Brian Solis of Altimeter Group has explained ‘Why CMOs Need to Invest in Micro-Moments’.

From the Zero Moment of Truth to Micro-moments – an evolution

The introduction of the Zero Moment of Truth (ZMOT) challenged marketers to consider new, intentional strategies to enable brands to become discoverable and capture attention in the discovery stage before guiding consumers through to purchase.

Micro-moments is follow-up to ZMOT and influenced by the increasingly ubiquitous nature of mobile among consumers. Instead of thinking about one common Zero Moment of Truth in any given situation, Micro-moments encourages marketers to consider many different, real-time, intent-driven micro-moments related to hundreds of different scenarios, all of which give marketers an opportunity to shape consumer decisions.

How do micro-moments influence modern marketing?

In many ways the underlying theme of Google’s Micro-moments research is not new. The idea that the consumer journey no longer follows a predictable, linear model, and the need to create more fluid, bespoke personas for our customer groups, has been covered before:

However, where I think Micro-moments is particularly interesting is in the mind-set shift it encourages us to adopt. Living in a mobile-orientated world has dramatically impacted how consumers think, search and buy online and as a result marketers must respond accordingly in order to succeed.

Micro-moments in action

With Google’s data and research in mind, let’s consider some examples of Google’s Micro-moments in action and how they may influence marketing decision-making:

People evaluate purchase decisions ‘in-the-moment’

Consumers have their smartphone to hand at all times and this has implications for brands who sell products in physical locations. According to Google, 1/3 of online consumers aged 18-34 say information discovered through search caused them to buy a more expensive product in a store if that product is more effective.

This insight provides a clear opportunity with search. Mobile means consumers can instantly search and compare products in the moment, meaning marketers must win these moments by providing timely and relevant information, such as product details, reviews and testimonials.

People solve problems ‘in-the-moment’

If something breaks or goes wrong, or if a consumer suddenly thinks of something they might need in a given moment, they’re likely to pick up their smartphone to take action. Google has found that online consumers purchase in unexpected places – 39% in the kitchen; 28% in the car; 21% in the bathroom.

In moments like this it’s important to be found so search is again a key consideration. However, in order to seal the deal marketers must also ensure that the mobile experience is consistent from start to finish. The user experience and shopping process must make things easy for the consumer, meaning products are first easy to find, followed by a painless checkout process.

People pursue big goals in small moments

We often think that buying a large purchase, such as a new piece of technology, car or even house, as something that requires dedicated research time carried out in one go. However, nowadays research is conducted in ‘stolen moments’ spread across the day, for example waiting in a queue, during a lunchtime break or sitting in an airport or train station.

Google has found that mobile queries for mortgage calculators have grown 66% since last year, illustrating the demand for research tools such as these ‘on the go’. Mobile moments are critical within long consideration journeys, with people chipping away at bits of research in free moments. Marketers must therefore ask:

• Do I offer the right experience for the screen and the context?

The micro-moment action plan 1. Make a moments map

Identify a set of moments you want to win or can’t afford to lose by examining all key phases of the consumer journey.

2. Understand customer needs in-the-moment

For each moment you want to win, put yourself in the consumer’s shoes. Ask “What would make this easier or faster? What content or features would be most helpful for this moment?”

3. Use context to deliver the right experience

Leverage contextual signals like location and time of day to deliver experiences and messages that feel tailor-made for the moment.

4. Optimise across the journey

People move seamlessly across screens and channels. Ensure your brand delivers seamlessly in return and don’t let competing objectives or department silos stand in the way.

5. Measure every moment that matters

While the return on investment for certain moments may not yet be directly measurable, use credible estimates to ensure nothing’s falling through the cracks.

The Best Laptops You Can Buy In 2023

Adam Birney / Android Authority

If you’re searching for a new laptop, you might be overwhelmed by the number of options. There’s nothing wrong with that — there are more macOS and Windows laptops than ever before. But how do you figure out which one is worth your money? Here’s our list of the best laptops on the market to help you narrow it all down!

We’ll list a few choices at different price levels and then move on to specialty machines. Ready? Let’s dig in.

Editor’s note: We’ll refresh this list of the best laptops as new options launch.

Asus Zenbook 14: Our best Windows laptop pick

Asus was once only best known for making high-performance PC parts, but it’s starting to build a name for itself in the laptop space too. The Zenbook 14 delivers great everyday computing in a slim and lightweight package. Better yet, it doesn’t even break the bank.

The base model Zenbook 14 packs Intel’s 12th-gen i5 processor and 8GB of RAM. But it’s the 90Hz OLED display that’s the star of the show. It goes up against the likes of the Macbook Pro’s mini-LED display, which costs twice as much as the humble Zenbook 14.

The Asus Zenbook 14 is a great pick if you want a premium-feeling laptop with high-end specs and an all-day battery.

Microsoft Surface Laptop 5

Calvin Wankhede / Android Authority

It’s impossible to make a list of the best laptops without mentioning Microsoft’s beautifully designed laptops. The Surface Laptop 5 is the latest iteration of the company’s flagship.

The sleek metal design houses a minimum of a 12th-gen Intel Core i5 processor, a 13.5 or 15-inch touchscreen PixelSense display, and 8GB of memory. Of course, you can opt for the more powerful Intel Core i7 chip if you want to truly put the Surface through its paces. It’s also available in two finishes: Alcantara and metal. The former is unique in that it offers a soft and padded palm rest, which you won’t find on any other laptop.

The Surface Laptop delivers up to 18 hours of battery life and charges quite quickly as well. All in all, the Surface Laptop 5 mates Microsoft’s vision for hardware with its own Windows 11 operating system.

MacBook Air (M2 Chip)

Oliver Cragg / Android Authority

While many affordable laptops opt for the Windows operating system, the M2-powered MacBook Air is a great way to test macOS without breaking the bank. It’s a lighter, wedge-shaped alternative to the MacBook Pro, and it still packs plenty of power for just about everyone.

Backing up the laptop is the in-house Apple M2 processor. You won’t have to choose different versions of the M2 chip, so it’s not too confusing. The new MacBook Air comes with 8GB of RAM and 256GB or 512GB of storage. We’d recommend the 16GB RAM variant, however, as it delivers plenty of future-proofing.

The MacBook Air is available in Midnight, Space Gray, Silver, and Starlight, so you can match it to the rest of your Apple products. No matter which color you select, the brilliant Retina display just might make you forget about the rest of the laptop.

Best high-end laptops

If you’re able to drop a bit more money on the latest and greatest, these picks are for you. Here you’ll find the most powerful options for the everyday user. From powerful processors to premium build quality, these laptops show off just what portable computing has become.

The picks:

Dell XPS 13

It’s getting challenging for Dell to find flaws to fix on the newest XPS 13, yet somehow they’ve managed to make it even better. The bezel is even smaller, the processor is even more powerful, the ports are even fewer — well, that’s not a perk, but it’s what happens when you want to pack the most power around.

Dell’s crisp 13.4-inch InfinityEdge display runs on the latest 12th-gen Intel Core i7 processor with up to 32GB of RAM and a 2TB SSD. Better yet, the display is made of durable Corning Gorilla Glass 6 and tuned with Dolby Vision for brighter colors and deeper shades of black, backed up by Intel’s new Iris Xe graphics. You can grab the Dell XPS 13 in Platinum Silver or Frost White, each with a backlit keyboard.

Dell XPS 15

If you love the Dell XPS family, but a 13.4-inch screen just isn’t big enough for you, Dell has recently refreshed the bigger and badder XPS 15 as well. The overall design looks familiar to the smaller version, but Dell has cranked everything to 11.

The screen is stretched out to 15.6-inches, and a UHD Plus touchscreen is available if you have the funds. Beneath that screen, you’ll find a 12th-gen Intel Core i7 or i9 chip, up to NVIDIA GeForce GTX 3050 Ti graphics, up to 64GB of DDR5 RAM, and up to 2TB of SSD space. Dell adds a third USB-C port to complement the two Thunderbolt 3 options.

Samsung Galaxy Book 3 Ultra

Ryan Haines / Android Authority

Samsung creates displays better than just about anyone else in the business. So what happens when you bring one of those displays to a laptop form factor? You get the powerful Galaxy Book 3 Ultra.

The Samsung Galaxy Book 3 Ultra doesn’t hold back when it comes to internals either — it boasts a 16-inch AMOLED display along with an Intel Core i7 or i9 processor. You also get 16GB of RAM and 1TB of storage.

However, Samsung’s Ultra model differs from its smartphone counterpart in that it doesn’t support the S Pen. If you need stylus functionality, you’ll be better served with the Galaxy Book 2 Pro instead.

Best Chromebooks

Eric Zeman / Android Authority

If you’re looking for a lightweight operating system that boots up quickly, a Chromebook might be your best bet. Chromebooks rely on Chrome OS — and Google apps — to get the job done. This means that some heavy-duty tasks won’t be possible on Chromebooks, though they excel in average jobs like browsing and streaming.

Lenovo IdeaPad Duet 5 Chromebook

Eric Zeman / Android Authority

Lenovo’s IdeaPad Duet 5 Chromebook is a follow-up to the excellent Chromebook Duet. The clever 13.3-inch OLED Chromebook tablet is an upgrade from the older 10.1-inch one. Not only is the display new and better, but you’re also getting some high-quality hardware under the hood.

The IdeaPad Duet 5 Chromebook is also one of the more value-for-money options on this list. It’s available with a Qualcomm Snapdragon 7c Gen 2 SoC onboard. You can snag 4GB of RAM and 64GB of storage or 8GB of RAM with 128GB of storage, solid options for this device. The Lenovo IdeaPad Duet 5 Chromebook is a perfect portability option as it weighs in at 1.5 pounds, with an extra 0.7 pounds for the Folio keyboard.

Lenovo’s Chromebook Duet tablet comes in a Storm Gray finish that is understated, but still rather attractive.

A gaming option: Acer Chromebook 516 GE

Edgar Cervantes / Android Authority

The third Chromebook on our list is the Acer 516 GE, one of the first gaming Chromebooks on the market. Whether you’re interested in gaming or not, this is a powerful laptop that’s capable of just about anything you could do in a web browser. Of course, it can run many games through Steam for ChromeOS but it’s also got Android app support.

Chromebooks have traditionally been criticized for their low performance, but you get a remarkable improvement for just a few hundred dollars more. The Acer Chromebook 516 GE also sports a sleek metallic design and RGB backlit keyboard that’s sure to look impressive in just about any setting, business or casual.

Best gaming laptops

C. Scott Brown / Android Authority

If you’ve ever tried to game on a standard laptop, you’ve probably realized just how difficult it can be. Your average machine isn’t tuned for intense gaming situations, but these choices are. With beefed-up GPUs and CPUs — and a healthy dose of RGB lighting — these are the best laptops available if you want to get your head in the game.

ASUS ROG Zephyrus G14

The ASUS ROG Zephyrus G14 is one of the most well-balanced gaming laptops on the market, packing plenty of power in a package that’s not too heavy or thick. Equipped with up to a Ryzen 9 processor, the Zephyrus G14 is a powerful all-around gaming machine with plenty of storage and speed.

The ROG Zephyrus G14 comes in black and white finishes, along with an optional Anime matrix display on the lid. It’s certainly an eye-catching design.

Overall, this is a great laptop for gaming on the go. What it loses in terms of power and cooling setup, you gain in portability.

Alienware x17

Alienware has found itself right at the top of the list for as long as there have been gaming laptops. Although the company doesn’t offer too many models, each has been refined to maximize power and style over the years. The Alienware x17 is no exception, and the brand-new model offers plenty of punch in a 17.3-inch design.

It’s upgraded to the 12th-gen Intel chipset, and the x17 is rocking up to a Core i9 and up to NVIDIA GeForce RTX 3080 Ti graphics. Alienware laptops tend to be heavy, but at 21mm and 6.65 lbs, the x17 is lighter and leaner than the Area-51m. Cooling is next to godliness in gaming, so Alienware leveled up the x17 with Cryo Tech cooling that combines heat pipes, copper stacks, and four high-voltage fans.

The Alienware x17 is available with up to 64GB of DDR5 RAM and up to 4TB of SSD space to finish the tour-de-force. If you’re looking for maximum customization for your RGB keyboard, AlienFX allows you to color each key individually.

Best business laptops

For a long time, business laptops weren’t exactly the best-looking options on the market. They prioritized function over form, often resulting in hefty and unattractive machines. Those days are fading, as these final three options will show. From high-end construction to fine-tuned internals, these aren’t your parents’ work computers.

HP Elite Dragonfly G3

The HP Elite Dragonfly G3 fits the bill if you want a business laptop that can make a statement in the boardroom. With a unique blue magnesium design and up to a 13.3-inch FHD touchscreen, the Dragonfly packs the power and style to command the room during a presentation.

It’s much more than just a brilliant finish, as the Dragonfly can be configured up to a 12th-gen Intel Core i7 processor with 16GB of RAM and Intel Iris Xe graphics. HP’s spill-resistant keyboard is backlit to help you work in dark places or while you travel. You never know what your next task will be at work, but the 512GB of base storage should handle just about anything you need.

Even better, the Elite Dragonfly is a 2-in-1, so you can flip it into tablet mode if you start to lose your audience’s attention in a meeting. A privacy screen and webcam killswitch also mean that you can work without interruption, and you won’t have anyone peeking over your shoulder.

Lenovo ThinkPad X1 Carbon 10th Generation

The Lenovo ThinkPad line has long been a top option for business laptops. Lenovo took all of the best ThinkPad features and rolled them into the powerful X1 family, with the Carbon laptop as its flagship. Now on its 10th generation, the ThinkPad X1 Carbon is dripping with the latest upgrades.

For starters, the newest X1 Carbon features 12th-gen Intel Core processors and up to 16GB of memory to keep you going. Lenovo even offers various screens, including a WUXGA with or without touch support, a 2.2K IPS, a 2.8K OLED, a WQUXGA option, and more.

Up to 2TB of storage and Dolby Atmos speakers help complete the setup along with USB-A and USB-C ports. It barely tips the scales at just 2.48 lbs.
