Suggested January 2024 Should You Buy A Gaming Pc Or A Console Or Neither?

Gaming PC or console – which one should you pick? If you want to get into gaming, it can be a difficult decision.

In this article, we’ll lay down the key differences so that you can find out which option is more suitable for you. If you choose a console, you’ll also need to think about which console to get. We’ll help with that, too.

Table of Contents

You may have also noticed we wrote “neither” in the title of this article too. So how can you game without either of these devices? Well, it’s almost 2023 and both Microsoft and Nvidia are either now offering or will soon be offering gaming over the Internet, or game streaming.

If you have a fast Internet connection, a regular PC will allow you to game at high-resolution for a low price. It’s worth checking out before spending any money at all. Nvidia’s gaming anywhere product is Nvidia Geforce Now and Microsoft’s is called Project xCloud.

Even Google is getting into the game. You can actually play Assassin’s Creed Odyssey on your PC using just Google Chrome. It’s called Project Stream and works quite well.

Hopefully, once you have finished reading this article, you’ll know whether you should buy a gaming PC or a console or just stream games.

Perhaps the easiest place to start is the price. If you simply can’t afford to spend any money, your best option would be to try and get the most out of your current rig. If you have a modest budget, a console may be the immediate easy choice.

Getting set up with a gaming PC that can handle most modern games reliably can easily cost you $800-$1000. You can build cheaper PCs, but you are compromising on what makes a gaming PC so great – high quality graphics and great frame rate.

You also have to factor in a gaming mouse, keyboard, and a good monitor if you haven’t got one already.

For a console, it’s easy to get set up by buying one of the many console bundles out there. With a bundle, you can pay $300 to $400 to get a new console, a game, and a controller. Pay just a little more and you can get the more powerful Xbox One X or PS4 Pro variants.

As you can see, the difference in price is quite large. Paying more for the PC has its benefits, and we’ll talk more about this below, but if you just want to play some video games without extra hassle or money, a console is the best choice.

Also, going back to high quality graphics and great frame rate, the One X and PS4 Pro can output at 4K up to 60 fps, which even a lot of high-end PCs struggle to do.

In addition to these options, Microsoft has also announced Xbox All Access, a monthly subscription that gives you access to a Xbox console, Xbox Game Pass and Xbox Live Gold. So, if you don’t want to pay everything upfront, this is a good option.

Finally, if you decide to go the streaming route, you’ll end up paying a monthly fee. At this point, no one really knows what it is since all of these services are in beta, but we’re guessing it’ll be in the range of $10 to $30 a month.

This is one that most often goes in the favor of the console. Both Microsoft and Sony pay a lot of money to get the rights to exclusive titles and this often means you’ll be missing out if you only have a gaming PC.

Some of the best triple A titles only get launched on consoles, and many other games get pushed to console far before PC players get the chance to play them. But it’s not as straightforward as one would first assume.

First party exclusives are more abundant on the PS4. Sony has put in a lot of effort to build a strong collection of first party developers.

You have an incredible range of highly rated exclusives on the PS4 like God of War, Uncharted, The Last of Us, Spider-Man, Bloodborne, and Horizon Zero Dawn.

For Xbox, it’s not as much of a concern. Because Microsoft owns Windows, you’ll see them push most of their exclusives to both PC and Xbox One. You won’t be able to play older classics like the earlier Halo games or Gears of War but future releases in these franchises will be available on the PC.

The PC does get some games that the consoles don’t, too, but usually they are titles from indie developers that are still in development. Some great examples include open world survival game SCUM, survival game Rust, strategy game Divinity: Original Sin II, and many more.

In summary, a console, especially a PS4, is almost crucial for great exclusive single player games. But on the other hand, the PC has some excellent strategy and multiplayer focused exclusives. It all depends on what types of games you like to play.

If you’re new to gaming, though, the offering from consoles, particularly the PS4, is a better choice. The developers of these games are backed by multi-million dollar publishers so you’ll know you’ll be playing a quality, bug free experience.

Performance and Graphics

This is where the PC really sets itself apart from the consoles. Once you play a video game on a PC with a crisp frame rate and ultra graphics, you’ll never want to go back.

The trouble is, to get a high frame rate and the highest graphics, you’ll often need to fork out over $1,000. You’ll need a high end graphics card, a high end processor, SSD storage, and a good amount of RAM.

The sentiment ‘you get what you pay for’ is very true here. You can pay $300-$400 for a PC, but the performance and graphics may even be worse than a PS4 or Xbox One X.

Pay $700-$1000 and you’ll have a decent PC that can play most games at a reasonable frame rate – better than what a console can offer.

You are looking at roughly $1,500-$2,000 for a top of the range gaming PC. In addition, you’ll need to spend extra for a high frame rate monitor, high-resolution HDR monitor, which can easily add another $500 to $1000 to the price tag.

For hardcore gamers, this investment is reasonable, and the experience if well worth it. If you’re new to gaming, investing so much may seem daunting.

In regards to the streaming services, it’s going to be hard to match the graphics of a gaming PC or a console, but for those that don’t care so much about the absolute best graphics, it’s worth trying. I was impressed with the quality of Project Stream on my 1440p monitor, considering it’s free right now.

Other Features

Thankfully, gaming consoles now double up as media streaming platforms. You can use apps like Netflix, HBO, and YouTube to watch content straight from your console.

PCs will always be a step up from what a gaming console can offer, however. In fact, gaming PCs in particular are powerful enough to do many tasks.

You can use a gaming PC for work, web browsing, video and photo editing, and pretty much anything else you could ever need a PC for. If you need a PC for work anyway, you could consider killing two birds with one stone by purchasing a gaming PC.

Whilst a gaming console is most often used to play games, a gaming PC is just a standard PC equipped with the hardware needed to play games.

PC gaming is also more ‘open source’ than console gaming. This means that many PC games have support for modding. Some modding communities are so large that you can essentially get hundreds of hours of extra community-made content for free from platforms like Steam Workshop or Nexus Mods.

Consider Your Friends

Gaming can be one of the best social experiences in the world, so if you have friends that play games, it might make sense to ask them what platform they play on first.

For many people, this can be the main deciding factor on what platform to buy, so make sure to consider it before making your decision.

Sitting Preference and Play Style

This may seem like an odd one, but it should be considered. Consoles are designed to be played from the comfort of your couch. They are easy to play in a relaxed position. Whilst it’s possible to get accessories that let you play your PC from the couch, typically, playing PC games requires you to be sitting up at a desk.

Another thing to consider is the difference between using a controller and a mouse/keyboard. The former is a great starting point for any gamer, and it’s far easier to get to grips with.

Using a mouse and keyboard takes time to learn, but overall it’s common knowledge that it’s easier to aim and control your character with a mouse and keyboard. The mouse allows more precise movement and the keyboard features many more buttons.

Would you prefer a casual, laid back experience, or a more engaging, competitive style experience? A console works best for casual gaming, whilst a PC is better for those more serious about gaming.

Thanks for reading our guide to picking a PC or gaming console or streaming. In summary, we’d suggest a console or streaming for those new to gaming or those on a budget. PC gaming is a great step up from that if you want to get more seriously involved with your video game hobby.

We hope the information we have provided has helped. After reading this, what platform will you choose?

Should You Buy The New Amd Ryzen 3000 Cpus Or Stick With Intel?

AMD just shocked the consumer PC space with a powerful lineup of new AMD Ryzen 3000 CPUs, which I recently covered on HDG. Is it finally time to make the switch from Intel to AMD?

In this article, I take a look at AMD’s new Ryzen processors and offer some tips on which processor brand you should go for in 2023 and 2023 when building a new computer.

Table of Contents

Keep in mind that because the AMD Ryzen 3000 chips are so new, we can’t offer precise benchmarking comparisons yet, but we can still provide a rough price to performance comparison between AMD’s new Ryzen 3000 CPUs versus Intel’s equivalent offerings.

For low-end budget builds, make sure to read my post on Intel vs AMD (Ryzen 5 and Ryzen 7 CPUs). This article will focus on the higher-end CPUs from both companies.

AMD Ryzen 9 3900X vs. Intel i9-9900K

We will start at the very top because we think this is where the biggest attention will be drawn. If you’re a serious gamer or content creator, the best CPU available was the Intel i9-9900K, by a long shot. But the AMD Ryzen 9 3900X has the potential to completely change that.

First, let’s talk about pricing. The AMD Ryzen 9 3900X will cost $499, whilst the i9-9900K is sitting at around $485 right now. The pricing for Intel’s best gaming CPU may drop in an attempt to compete against the new Ryzen lineup, but for now, the prices are very comparable.

At a glance, the AMD Ryzen 9 3900X has enough power to outperform the i9 9900K. We are still waiting for benchmarks, but there’s a lot to get excited about. Firstly, AMD’s new Ryzen 9 3900X is using a 7 nanometer process. Smaller transistors mean that CPUs can be more power efficient, pushing out more calculations without hitting temperature limits.

So, a jump to 7 nanometer from 14 nanometer is already a big thing for Ryzen, and it should mean better single threaded performance. The base clock speed is 3.8GHz, bigger than the 3.6GHz base clock of the i9 9900K, and you also get a much larger cache of 6MB/64MB versus 2MB/16MB. For multi-threaded performance, things are looking pretty spectacular

Ultimately, the Ryzen 9 3900X easily has the potential to be a more powerful alternative to the i9 9900K at basically the same price. And, if you need even more computing power, the AMD Ryzen 9 3950X cache and a base clock of 3.8GHz. Intel is definitely worried right now.

AMD Ryzen 7 3800X vs Intel i7-9700K

A slight step down from the i9-9900K is the i7-9700K, usually retailing for around $400. AMD’s new competitor at this price point is the AMD Ryzen 7 3800X.

a cache of 12MB of L3. Once again, I won’t be surprised if AMD knocks the ball out of the park in terms of performance if you put the AMD Ryzen 7 3800X against the i7-9700K

AMD Ryzen 5 3600 vs i5-9600K

But what about the low end? All of a sudden, AMD may just have beat Intel in performance for gaming at the high end, but can they still hold onto their title for best low end CPU? Well, the best way to find out is to compare the new AMD Ryzen 5 3600 vs the i5-9600K.

Firstly, the i5-9600K sits at $230 right now, and the AMD Ryzen 5 3600 will launch for $199. I would be very shocked if Intel doesn’t drop the price of the i5-9600K to compete with the new Ryzen 5 3600, so let’s just assume price points will be the same.

Even at this price point, AMD still wins with the better architecture – their cheapest new AMD Ryzen 5, the 3600, is still using a 7nm processor, leaving the 14nm i5-9600K in the dust. Both processors can be boosted, but the i5-9600K starts at 3.7GHz, versus the 3.6GHz base clock of the Ryzen 5 3600.

That extra 100mHz isn’t going to mean anything against the single threaded six cores on the i5 gives the Ryzen 5 3600 so much more room for better performance.

I’d suggest that the AMD Ryzen 5 3600 will hit far, far better benchmark results against the i5-9600K.

AMD vs Intel in 2023 – Who Will Win?

Ultimately, at every single price point, AMD has completely beaten Intel’s offering. So what will Intel do to compete? For now, Intel may drop their pricing a little to offer a better deal for customers, but even then, AMD is still likely to win the price/performance game.

Intel are of course working to launch their own 7nm CPU range. When they do, we wouldn’t be surprised if things look up for Intel again, but that may not be until 2023 or beyond. If you’re in the market for a good gaming CPU, the new AMD Ryzen lineup is an excellent place to start.

If you are a gamer or a content creator, I absolutely cannot recommend AMD more than Intel at this point. The new lineup will launch on July 7, so I’d suggest waiting a few months after that date to make sure there aren’t any major manufacturing issues that come up. This would make a new AMD Ryzen 3000 CPU the perfect gift around the holiday period.

In summary, should you switch to the new AMD Ryzen 3000 lineup? Well, if you are in the market for a new CPU, absolutely. If you already have the i9-9900K, it may not make sense to upgrade unless you’re absolutely after a new PC within the next 6 months.

If you are on anything less powerful, then a CPU upgrade to a new AMD Ryzen 3000 CPU will definitely bring you enough performance improvements to make the investment worth it.

5 Reasons Why You Should Buy A Mechanical Keyboard

There you are, sitting on your office chair. Feeling comfortable and good about yourself. Let me tell you something. You are lost. You are a nobody. Why? Because you don’t have a mechanical keyboard in your life! Like some evangelical preacher, I have an idea I need to sell you. That is the glory of the mechanical keyboard. If you accept the mechanical keyboard into your life, you could be experiencing increased comfort, improved productivity, and glory! It will change the way you type forever! Don’t just ask me, there are plenty of fanatics that have forever converted from using cheap, rubber-dome keyboards to high-quality mechanicals. I have made a short list of five reasons why you should switch to a mechanical keyboard. I have faith that you will see the light.

The second reason why you need to switch to a mechanical keyboard is ergonomics. Mechanical keyboards generally have higher quality keycaps which are rounded to let your fingers rest on them more comfortably. Traditional laptop keys, with the exception of Lenovo’s, are flat. Flat keys are good for space-saving designs but you not only lose precision, but also comfort. I find flat keys uncomfortable to type on for long periods because I have to hit them “head on” in order not to make an error. Also, it is very easy to hit these keycaps on the corners which will cause your fingers to slip and mis-type. If you hit the corner of a keycap on a mechanical keyboard, you still have a good chance of registering the input. The longer “throw” of mechanical keyboards are also more comfortable for long typing sessions compared to the short engagement point of chicklet-style keyboards. For a long time, I thought the main attribute of an ergonomic keyboard is shape. After using the Microsoft Natural Ergonomic keyboard for 2-3 years and using my Leopold Tenkeyless for about 5 months, I realize that it’s not about the shape. The main reason mechanical keyboards are better is the key switches.

The third benefit is reduced strain. I realize this is closely related to comfort but I felt that this deserved its own section simply because of RSI(Repetitive Strain Injury). We use our computers for hours and some of us do not take RSI seriously. I take good care of my hands. And so should you. For most people, their hands are their livelihood. Hand health is very important if you are a musician, laborer, or athlete. One thing I’ve notice after spending a few months with my mechanical keyboard compared to keyboards of my past is finger pain. I use to get finger pain after prolonged typing on the rubber dome keys. They were all I knew so I didn’t question. It wasn’t until I was in the market for a better keyboard where I found out about mechanical key switches. Subsequently, it wasn’t until I was typing on them for hours until I realized my finger pain was mainly caused by the cheap rubber-dome keyboards. If you are on the computer for hours, or if your profession involves extensive amounts of typing, consider investing on a mechanical keyboard for this very reason. These key switches will reduce finger strain. Your hands will thank you.

The fourth benefit of using a mechanical keyboard is improved speed. A more precise, comfortable keyboard means improved typing speed. I was never a speed typist. Barely being able to type 25 WPM, after a few months of serious training, I can now type 60-70 WPM. Your mileage may vary but you will improve your speed. If not in burst typing, definitely in endurance typing. That’s typing long essays or reports. Wiki has the average typing speed rated at 33 WPM. If you are over this, you are doing very well.

The last and most important reason why you need a mechanical keyboard? They’re fun! That may sound silly to say but after getting one, I now enjoy typing. I like the sound of these Cherry MX browns. Some people like the blues. You can’t go wrong either way. They’re great to type on. Mechanical keyboards have their own unique personalities. From the simple Leopold Tenkeyless to the highly sought after HHKB Pro 2. Typing shouldn’t be a chore. Most people probably won’t be competing on typeracer for leisure, but mechanical keyboards will make you smile. It’s like buying a luxury car. Sure, you don’t NEED leather heated seat with power everything but if you can afford it, why not treat yourself? Especially a tool that you will spend years using. Once you punch the keys, you will see the light

Should You Use Nofollow, Sponsored, Or Ugc Links?

Today’s question comes from Aishwarya in Queensland, who asks:

“Is it necessary to use Nofollow, Sponsored or UGC links (rel=”sponsored”, rel=”follow” or rel=”nofollow sponsored”) in the coupons/vouchers/offers websites where there are lot of outbound links? If yes, which of the links above is better to use.”

Great question, Aishwarya!

Yes, it’s absolutely necessary to use these attributes on your outbound links.

Aside from the U.S., UK, and the EU each having its own unique laws and rules about needing to disclose, Google has its own version and mentions it in their guidelines, too. Here is an example of that.

Google also applied a penalty a few years back specifically for sites that aren’t disclosing.

I talked about how Google can tell if you are or are not disclosing in this post.

Because you asked about coupons, in particular, I’ll assume you’re a vouchers website and answer for your likely situation.

Here is how I recommend doing the attribute.

You are likely earning commissions or getting paid.

This would mean you’ll want to use sponsored because you’re not placing the link there to be nice.

This includes affiliate links, media buys, products for review, and when you have custom coupon codes that are being used to track from the page.

If you aren’t making money and just sourcing coupon codes with no monetary gain, then leave it as a follow link, and don’t worry.

That means the store is trustworthy and should have followed links.

There are multiple situations here.

1. If the website you are linking to is not something you trust, then you shouldn’t be building a page for coupons for that store.

Ask yourself, “Why would you refer website visitors to a store that isn’t trustworthy?”

It doesn’t make sense to link to them, so simply delete that page instead of using no-follow.

If you insist on having the page, then nofollow is correct but not recommended.

2. If the links are not affiliate, PR, or paid media and you added them because the store’s deal is worth mentioning, then follow is the right way to go.

This is because there is no monetary incentive and you feel the website is a good resource for your webpage visitors.

UGC & User-Submitted Coupons

Just like nofollow above, this is situational:

If the page is non-branded (ie.: “Valentine’s Coupons”) and coupons are user-submitted, use UGC.

If it is user-submitted and there is no affiliate relationship, make it UGC.

Affiliate Links

These should be sponsored because you are posting them with the goal of earning a commission.

Hopefully this helps answer your question about coupon websites and which link attributes to use.

If it doesn’t, please feel free to reach out to me so I can look at your website and understand the specific situation.

Thank you for the question!

If you use AMD motherboards, then you may be curious about DOCP. This is especially important for overclocking your RAM to its rated speed.

Overclocking, for many users, may be a performance upgrade, but does it come with any risks? We discuss DOCP in this comprehensive guide and explore some pros and cons.

Also, if you are interested, we have written about the best AMD CPU overclocking software.

What Is DOCP?

DOCP stands for Direct Overclock Profile and is comparable to Intel’s XMP (Extreme Memory Profile) technology. It is known for the following:

Helping memory modules operate at higher frequencies and with better timings.

Adjusting the

voltage to the manufacturer’s suggested levels.

RAM has a specified speed and timing. A 3200MHz DDR4 kit, for instance, would have timings of 16-18-18-36.

Your motherboard will automatically set the RAM speed and timing to the recommended levels when you enable DOCP.

To learn more about RAM speed, check our guide on what happens if RAM is faster than CPU to learn more.

Should I turn on DOCP?

Most people will favor enabling DOCP for the following reasons:

You get optimal RAM performance by enabling them to operate at the claimed speeds and timings.

DOCP automatically applies the RAM-specific XMP profile, so, no manual fiddling with settings.

Running your RAM at higher frequencies can result in quicker data transfer rates and responsiveness.

Higher RAM speeds can improve your system’s capacity to manage numerous activities concurrently.

However, there are some drawbacks, some of which we state below:
