Sony has revealed its latest range of A/V receivers and Blu-ray players, with the new models having a custom integration focus. The Sony STR-DA3600ES, STR-DA4600ES and STR-DA5600ES all support multi-room playback, with 7.1-channels, HDMI 1.4a inputs/outputs and 3D support, while the STR-DN2010 is set up for a single room. Meanwhile there’s also the Sony BDP-S1700ES, a Full HD 1080p Blu-ray player with 3D support, integrated WiFi b/g/n and upscaling.

Thanks to ethernet connectivity the various ES-series receivers can stream content locally and over the internet using DLNA or subscription-based services like Rhapsody. The DA3600ES has 100W per channel, the DA4600ES has 110W per channel and the DA5600ES has 130W per channel; the latter two models can also push out audio and video to a second zone via ethernet, simultaneously upscaling content to 1080p in the main zone and 1080i in the secondary zone.

As for the BDP-S1700ES, that’s compatible with Sony’s iPhone/iPod touch remote control app, and the company says an Android version is on its way. Like the receivers it has an IR input, and it can also connect to the Gracenote database for media info.

Company Supports Specialty AV Channel With Focused Distribution Strategy

SAN DIEGO, July 6, 2010 – Driving the innovation of 3D, Sony today took another step to strengthen its industry leading 3D home product line with new Elevated Standard (ES) AV receivers including the STR-DA5600ES, STRA-DA4600ES, and STR-DA3600ES and a Blu-ray 3D™ player, the BDP-S1700ES.

In addition to Sony’s latest 3D capable BRAVIA® HDTVs, the new ES components represent the best audio and video quality Sony has to offer. Designed with custom installers in mind, ES models integrate seamlessly with multi-room, third-party control systems.

AV Receivers with Custom Control

Sony’s 2010 ES AV receivers feature IR input jacks and two-way serial control. They also offer control over IP which allows installers to easily integrate the receivers into the leading home automation systems including Control4®, Crestron, AMX®, Savant, Ultimate Remote Control, RTI, and others. Sony has worked closely with leading control companies and is a Control4 Certified Partner, an AMX Device Discovery Partner, Crestron Integration Partner, and a Savant Excellence in Audio and Video Partner.

The new models offer 3D pass-through and flexible multi-room features. They can connect to a home broadband network through an Ethernet port offering easy access to digital photos, music and videos from Digital Life Network Alliance (DLNA®) sources. They also function as an Ethernet hub featuring four ports that connect other network devices.

Additionally, the Ethernet connection provides access to both Shoutcast® Internet Radio and Rhapsody® Music Service, and offers easy access to firmware upgrades via the Internet. The STR-DA5600ES model also functions as a DLNA Live Audio Server that can stream music to other DLNA clients.

The STR-DA5600ES and the STR-DA4600ES offer the ability to distribute audio and video to multiple rooms via the second HDMI output and video to a second zone via CAT5 output. They can both also up-scale all sources to 1080p in the main zone and 1080i in a second zone via the Faroudja chip® ensuring a consistent, sharp picture. The connected video zones feature a high-grade, icon-driven menu system that allows for simple device and content navigation.

All three models feature Digital Cinema Auto Calibration (DCAC) with Automatic Phase Matching (APM). Without changing the front reference speakers, APM corrects for phase differentiation between front, center, and surround speakers, ensuring an ideal sound stage regardless of speaker type. The STR-DA5600ES also offers DCAC EX which includes speaker relocation, not only adjusting for the distance but also the angle of the listening position to create an optimal listening environment.

Available next month for about $400, Sony’s BDP-S1700ES Blu-ray 3D player features an IR input on the back panel or easy integration with control systems. It also offers built in Wi-Fi (802.11n) for easy access to Sony’s BRAVIA Internet Video platform and Sony’s new premium video service, Qriocity.

Also, users with an iPhone or iPod touch device can control the player using the free “BD Remote” app available from the Apple App store. The app, which will also be available soon for Android™ devices, allows the hand-held to function as a remote control and displays Blu-ray Disc details such as jacket artwork, actor, and production information as well as search for related video clips online.

When will the Sony Xperia 1 IV be released?

Sony announced the Xperia 1 IV (alongside the Xperia 10 IV) on 11 May, promising that the phone would be launching “this month”, however, it officially went on sale in the UK on 16 June.

One obvious absence from the 11 May stream was any sign of the anticipated Xperia 5 IV, which some are now speculating has been outright cancelled.

How much does the Sony Xperia 1 IV cost?

Even with what are mostly modest hardware improvements, Sony has seen fit to up the price of the Xperia 1 IV once again, with the 12GB RAM/256GB SKU coming to the likes of the UK and Europe costing £1,299/€1,399, while the US model – set to ship with 512GB of storage – is priced at $1,599.99.

Despite upping the price, the Mk IV actually comes with fewer things in-box. As part of the company’s “Road to Zero” initiative, this latest Xperia comes in all-paper packaging that’s 50% smaller than the previous model, which as you might have guessed, is partially made possible thanks to Sony’s decision to ditch the in-box power adapter.

Like before the Xperia 1 IV still supports 30W PD charging (not 45W as had been speculated), with Sony selling the same XQZ-UC1 fast charger it marketed alongside the 1 III, separately.

Interestingly, despite the move from a 4500mAh to a larger 5000mAh capacity battery, Sony still quotes the same 50% charge in 30 minutes. Wireless and reverse wireless charging are still part of the equation too.

Gamers will also appreciate a key improvement to Game Enhancer, which sees live streaming integration now part of its feature set; with a special agreement with YouTube that lets new channels live stream before reaching the otherwise-required 1000-subscriber minimum threshold.

The company also teased what it’s dubbed the Gaming Gear for Xperia 1 IV – a dedicated cooling fan that can be mounted onto the back of the phone to help maintain performance over extended gaming sessions; much like similar accessories seen on dedicated gaming phones, such as Asus’ ROG phone AeroActive Cooler and the Red Magic Turbo Cooler.

Sony did state, however, that the Gaming Gear is still under development with the help of professional e-sports team SCARZ and won’t hit the market “in some regions” until autumn 2023.

While there are a number of ‘Pro’ branded apps (Photo Pro, Video Pro etc.) to supplement the camera system’s extensive functionality, the Mk IV’s launch also heralded the unveiling of Music Pro.

Paired with a paid monthly subscription, users can record vocals via the Music Pro app, using the on-device microphone array. Files are then processed in the cloud, with what Sony describes as “studio tuning,” meant to make audio sound as if it were “recorded in a studio using a condenser microphone, with noise reduced and reverberation removed.”

The latest creation by Sony for the world of ultra-wide zoom lenses makes for a unique new addition to the brand’s existing FE lens lineup.

The concept behind the new zoom lens isn’t completely new, but it is a departure from the usual among these types of Sony lenses. This makes it particularly noteworthy for photographers.

With many standard zoom lenses, the main problem is a lack of a wide-enough angle of view. This often means having to switch out one lens for another on the fly in versatile shooting environments. This can be especially tedious during all the suddenly changing needs of street photography.

This new FE 20-70mm F/4 G lens is designed to handle this problem with aplomb. It does so by being ready with an abnormally wide viewing angle at its 20mm focal length while still delivering plenty of zoom capacity if it’s taken towards 70mm.

The particularly cool thing about the FE 20-70mm is that it not only provides a wide angle of view but actually delivers a better one than many other standard zoom lenses.

Most typically reach only 24mm compared to this model’s 20mm. That 4mm difference makes for some wonderfully wide angles for a much broader range of subjects.

While the FE 20-70MM isn’t a part of Sony’s G Master lens range, what it delivers with its specs will almost certainly be worth a lot to many photographers, especially those with rapidly shifting needs in the field.

One potential downside of the FE 20-700mm is its constant maximum aperture of f/2.8, but even this shouldn’t be a problem for many users.

In terms of design, Sony has given the new FE lens quite a bit that’s worth appreciating. The brand claims that its resolution is excellent right from edge to edge along the lens surface and it features a very fast, whisper-silent AF motor.

The FE 20-70mm is also light and just small enough to be easily portable with its 17.2 oz / 488 g weight and its 7.8 x 9.9 cm dimensions (3.1 x 3.9 inches.) The body of the FE 20-70mm is made of both plastic and metal to maximize lightness.

Sony has also given this lens a moisture and dust-resistant coating while putting a fluorine coating on the front lens for resisting dirt, water spots, fingerprints, dust and smudges.

There’s also a 9-bladed diaphragm and dual XD Linear motors inside the Sony FE 20-70mm.

According to Sony, this particular combo of motors makes the lens 60% faster than its predecessor at tracking subjects, but this comparison doesn’t include more recent alternative Sony lenses.

Sony also claims that the FE lens’s focal range of 0.25 meters makes it a sort of “half-macro” lens, but maybe photographers themselves should decide what they think of that claim.

Basically, the focal range of the new FE 20-70mm makes it one of the most diversely useful of all Sony lenses on the market so far and this is worth more than many other specs like speed and fine trimmings.

Given all of the above features, Sony’s new FE 20-70mm F4 G lens is unsurprisingly on the expensive side with a current retail price of $ 1,099 USD upon availability. It will start shipping in February or March.
