Original article: The Sony Xperia 1, announced in February 2023, was less than perfect. Sony took a gamble on the phone by stretching the screen’s shape from the preferred 19.5:9 aspect ratio to the exceedingly awkward 21:9. The company did the same thing with the Xperia 5, and the 10, and 10 Plus mid-rangers. The move didn’t pay off for Sony. Now that we’re on the cusp of the Sony Xperia 2’s potential announcement window at MWC 2023, it’s worth weighing what will and will not work for Sony as it continues to seek smartphone success.

Here are five things we want to see in the next flagship Sony Xperia smartphone.

3. Better cameras

Sony has an incredible heritage in imaging. Just look at its Alpha line of mirrorless cameras. The Alpha 7 III was on nearly every camera publication’s “Best Pic” list throughout 2023, and the new A7R IV and A9 II are even better. Somehow, Sony’s success with its Alpha cameras has not translated to success with its phone cameras.

Every year, Sony claims to have solved its camera woes. This year, things will be better, it assures us, year after year, and yet the resulting images just don’t match those from class leaders Samsung, Google, and Apple. It is vital that Sony solve this problem. The industry has widely settled on the ultra-wide, standard, and telephoto arrangement as far as lenses are concerned. Not only does Sony need to deliver this expected setup, it has to knock picture quality out of the park too.

It wouldn’t hurt to offer best-in-class video and audio capture, as well.

4. Seamless experiences

Anyone invested in the Apple ecosystem enjoys simple, cross-product compatibility that few other device makers offer. It’s easy to move content from MacBook to iPhone to Apple TV. Google is a close second, and Samsung isn’t far off, either. Can Sony up its game to match these competitors?

Sony makes far more than just phones. It manufactures television sets and Blu-Ray players, soundbars and in-home audio equipment, and simple cameras alongside cinematic camcorders. Sony is also an entertainment company, with entire divisions devoted to movies, music, and PlayStation gaming. Sony has tried over the years to build an ecosystem that works well for consumers (cough, PlayStation tie-ins, cough), but it hasn’t assembled the puzzle pieces in just the right way yet. It should.

Consumers could come out winners if Sony nails the cross-device content play.

5. The (affordable) kitchen sink

Perhaps most importantly, Sony has to keep the price point in check. The Sony Xperia 1 retailed for $949 and didn’t see substantive price cuts until the holiday season. Sony can’t charge this much for the Xperia 2 unless the flagship goes toe-to-toe with its competitors in features and performance.

Yeah, I’m asking a lot. Asking Sony to essentially rethink its entire phone strategy mere weeks before we may see the Sony Xperia 2 is folly, but Sony Mobile needs the kick in the pants.

Our Verdict

Sony has done a great job of making a mini version of its flagship smartphone so getting the Z3 Compact only really means a smaller screen and less money. In fact, unless you want the bigger screen of the Z3, it really makes no sense to buy it over the Compact. Sony might have done too good a job.

At IFA 2014, Sony launched its new Z3 series of  smartphones and tablets including the Xperia Z3 and a mini version of the flagship device in the form of the Xperia Z3 Compact. You’re probably familiar with the concept of a flagship phone be released followed by a smaller and cheaper version which tends to get ‘mini’ added to the product name. Well Sony does this but the Compact aims to provide the flagship device in a smaller form factor without the compromise.

Sony hasn’t released a smaller model of its top-end smartphone since the original Xperia Z1 Compact (we don’t know why there wasn’t a Z2 Compact) but it’s now back with the Z3 Compact. It’s a great example of a mini smartphone and retains a lot of what’s on offer in the full-size version. However, there are many differences to consider and that’s what this article is for.

A fairly obvious difference is the price as the full-size Xperia Z3 costs £549 (that’s Sony’s official price) while the Xperia Z3 Compact will only set you back £429 – although Clove has it for just £349. There’s little to say about design as these are essentially the same phone but in two different sizes. They use what it now Sony’s classic Xperia design language which includes new nylon corners for those accidental drop situations. They’re also dust- and waterproof to an IP68 rating.

Being the flagship model, the Xperia Z3 is thinner at 7.3 mm compared to 8.6 mm but since the device is smaller, the Z3 Compact is lighter at 129 g against 152 g.

What colour your smartphone is will matter to some degree so it’s worth pointing out that aside from black and white, the Xperia Z3 is available in silver green and copper while the Xperia Z3 Compact comes in a bolder green and bright orange.

The screen is likely to be one of the main areas which will influence your decision – the main point of a mini or compact version of a flagship smartphone is to cater for those not wanting a large screen.

Sony has stuck with the 5.2in size for the flagship Xperia Z3 with a Full HD (1080 x 1920) resolution while the Z3 Compact uses a more manageable 4.6in display. That’s a little bigger than the Z1 Compact but the firm has kept the phone the same size due to smaller bezels.

It’s really about whether you want and can comfortably use a larger screen or not but it’s worth pointing out that the Z3 Compact uses a 720p resolution. That’s kind of understandable considering the drop in size but does mean a lower pixel density of 319ppi compared to 424ppi.

There’s really only one more difference to mention and it’s not a big deal. The Xperia Z3 Compact has 2 GB of RAM while the Xperia Z3 has 3 GB. The phones are essentially the same from here on out so price, design and screen are the three areas to focus on when deciding between these two smartphones.

We’re not going to stop there though, as Sony deserves credit for retaining so many specs and features of the Xperia Z3 in the Xperia Z3 Compact.

The pair are powered by a Qualcomm Snapdragon 801 quad-core processor clocked at 2.5 GHz, higher than their predecessors although it’s a shame not to a 64-bit chip in preparation for Android L.

Storage is simply 16 GB or nothing but the Xperia Z3 and its smaller brother each has a microSD card slot which allows you to add up to 128 GB. On the wireless side of things, you’ll get 11ac Wi-Fi, Bluetooth 4.0, NFC and 4G LTE support – look elsewhere if you want features like a fingerprint scanner and IR blaster.

Sony is sticking with its tried and tested 20.7 Mp main camera with its own Exmor RS sensor which we’ve seen in previous Xperia smartphones. There are a couple of new features though, as the Z3 series has a 25mm wide-angle lens and a super high ISO of 12800. Both have a 2.2 Mp front camera capable of recording 1080p video.

In terms of software, it’s unsurprising that the Z3 series comes with Android 4.4 KitKat with Sony’s own user interface. A standout feature is PS4 Remote Play which means the smartphones are the first with the ability to play PS4 games over a Wi-Fi network.

It’s also worth noting that the Z3 and Z3 Compact support High-Res audio playback including DSD files. If you don’t own any high-res music then Sony’s DSEE HD (digital sound enhancement engine) promised to upscale it to near high-res quality.

The Fitbit Charge series is the company’s longest-running device line packing plenty of health tracking kit into a slim body. The latest addition to this series came in 2023 — the Fitbit Charge 5 — so we’re well due for a new model. But is the company planning a Fitbit Charge 6? We’ve gathered everything we know about the fitness tracker, including what we hope to see further down.

Will there be a Fitbit Charge 6?

We’d be pretty surprised if Fitbit canned its Charge line. It’s among the more popular and recognized Fitbit series that also includes some of the best fitness trackers in the business. However, the Charge series has been among the company’s least active of late.

Fitbit failed to launch a new Charge model alongside the Sense 2, Versa 4, and Inspire 3 at its August 2023 event, but this doesn’t necessarily mean the Charge 6 won’t debut at all. Fitbit is known for its unpredictable launch schedule, so it’s not a huge concern that the Charge 6 didn’t launch exactly a year after the Charge 5. In fact, the company also skipped a year before launching the latest Versa model.

The latest line of Fitbit devices has not seen a sharp price increase. The Sense 2, Versa 4, and Inspire 3 cost the same as their predecessors at launch. If this is the case with the Fitbit Charge 6, we can expect a $179 asking price on debut. That’s a little steeper than most fitness trackers in the market, so we’ll have to see if the company has room to slice a few digits off that fee.

Considering that the Inspire 3 looks an awful lot like the Luxe, it’s unclear if Fitbit would bother launching a Luxe sequel. This would free up the $149 price point for the new Charge model and regain some much needed goodwill from the Fitbit community.

Fitbit Charge 6: What we want to see

As mentioned above, Fitbit included several Sense-exclusive features on the Charge 5, including the ECG, skin temperature sensor, and EDA sensor. The latter recently received an update on the Sense 2, which now monitors EDA activity continuously. This continuous body response sensor makes for more intuitive stress tracking.

This feature on the Charge 6 would be a great addition to the Charge 5’s health tracking kit and give it a leg up on its fitness tracker rivals. In reality, it’s also the only readily-available and major new sensor Fitbit could add to the device to set it apart from its predecessor.

Music controls

The Fitbit Charge 4 launched with rudimentary Spotify controls that let Premium subscribers control tracks playing on their phones. This feature was stripped entirely from the Charge 5, while the band also failed to gain any universal music controls that would let users stop, pause, or skip tracks on their phones.

In 2023, this would be almost unforgivable. Traditionally, the Charge series has lacked music controls, but its high time Fitbit adds this to its premier fitness tracker line. This is especially true considering that almost all its competitors at or below its price bracket, like the Xiaomi Mi Band 7 and HUAWEI Band 7, include music controls.

Looking at the Fitbit range at large, we don’t expect music controls to make a return. The Sense 2 and Versa 4 launched without this feature, so we doubt Fitbit would include it on the Charge 6. Nevertheless, we can dream.

Google app support

Now that Google is establishing itself as Fitbit’s owner, we’d like to see some more of the company’s features on the Charge 6. Google Maps turn-by-turn navigation support would likely make it the cheapest new tracker with this feature. Adding Google Assistant for on-the-fly queries, Google Wallet for payments, and Google Home controls for smart home commands would sweeten the deal.

It seems unlikely we’ll get Assistant support on the Charge 6 when the Sense 2 and Versa 4 did not. However, it would give the Charge 6 some welcome Pixel Watch-like utility.

How To Boot Into Sony Xperia E Recovery Mode

A recovery is a separate bootable partition on your Android device that you can use to install system updates and repair (factory reset) your device. A lot more can be done using a custom recovery, but the stock recovery that comes pre-installed on Android devices is limited to these features only. And FYI, these features are integrated into the Android OS as well — when you choose to factory reset your device from device settings or install an OTA update, your device reboots and boots into the stock recovery to finish the job.

The recovery installed on your device may not be touch-friendly. You’ll have to use the Power and Volume buttons available on your device to select and navigate between options in the recovery.

There are multiple methods to boot your Xperia E in recovery mode. The most handy (and hardware coded) method is about pressing a particular hardware button a couple of times while booting up your Xperia E. Others are software based, let’s have a look at them below.

NOTE

Sony Xperia devices don’t ship with a pre-installed recovery. So unless you’ve installed a custom recovery like CWM or TWRP on your device, you won’t be able to boot into recovery mode.

1) Boot into Xperia E Recovery Mode Using

This method is a fail-proof method that’ll always work for you, unless you’ve broken one of hardware keys. In such a case you’d be left with only the other two methods discussed on this page.

Switch off your Xperia E first

Switch it back on and the time when you see your phone’s LED notification light turn Pink! (or changes to any other color) — start pressing either the Volume UP or Volume Down key a couple of times to make your phone boot into recovery mode

Once you’re in recovery mode. Use Volume buttons to navigate Up and Down between options and Power button to select an option in recovery.

ADB stands for Android Debug Bridge, a tool used to send terminal commands to a Android device via a PC command line. ADB requires a bit of setup, but it gets the job done with much lesser effort than hardware buttons, so pretty useful in cases when you’ve to boot into recovery mode frequently. Also, if (for some reason) your hardware buttons aren’t working than this is a very good alternative to boot into recovery mode.

And make sure you’ve proper drivers installed for your device.
