Because you don’t have a mechanical keyboard in your life! Like some evangelical preacher, I have an idea I need to sell you. That is the glory of the mechanical keyboard. If you accept the mechanical keyboard into your life, you could be experiencing increased comfort, improved productivity, and glory! It will change the way you type forever! Don’t just ask me, there are plenty of fanatics that have forever converted from using cheap, rubber-dome keyboards to high-quality mechanicals. I have made a short list of five reasons why you should switch to a mechanical keyboard. I have faith that you will see the light.

The second reason why you need to switch to a mechanical keyboard is ergonomics. Mechanical keyboards generally have higher quality keycaps which are rounded to let your fingers rest on them more comfortably. Traditional laptop keys, with the exception of Lenovo’s, are flat. Flat keys are good for space-saving designs but you not only lose precision, but also comfort. I find flat keys uncomfortable to type on for long periods because I have to hit them “head on” in order not to make an error. Also, it is very easy to hit these keycaps on the corners which will cause your fingers to slip and mis-type. If you hit the corner of a keycap on a mechanical keyboard, you still have a good chance of registering the input. The longer “throw” of mechanical keyboards are also more comfortable for long typing sessions compared to the short engagement point of chicklet-style keyboards. For a long time, I thought the main attribute of an ergonomic keyboard is shape. After using the Microsoft Natural Ergonomic keyboard for 2-3 years and using my Leopold Tenkeyless for about 5 months, I realize that it’s not about the shape. The main reason mechanical keyboards are better is the key switches.

The third benefit is reduced strain. I realize this is closely related to comfort but I felt that this deserved its own section simply because of RSI(Repetitive Strain Injury). The tool analyzes your webpage against five performance best practices (that are crucial for having faster loading sites), such as minimizing connections, reducing payload size, leveraging browser caching, etc., and will give you suggestions about how you can improve each aspect of your site.

In our experience, content that’s less than 1,000 words does not do as well as content that is more than 1,000 words.

Are we a content writing company? No, we are not. Is word count a ranking factor? Also no.

But, when you’re judging what to do in the context of the competition, making sure your content is well-written is key to success.

The content on your site needs to be good and informative. It needs to answer questions, provide information, or have a point of view that’s different enough from other sites in the same niche as yours.

If it doesn’t meet those standards, Google will likely find another site with better quality content that does.

If you’re wondering why your website isn’t ranking highly in Google search results for some keywords despite following through SEO best practices like adding relevant keywords throughout the text (Hint: Your Content), then one culprit may be thin pages where there really should be more than just 100 words per page!

Thin pages can cause indexing issues because they don’t contain much unique content and don’t meet minimum quality levels compared to your competition.

6. Your Site Isn’t User-friendly And Engaging To Visitors

Having a user-friendly and engaging site is crucial to good SEO. Google will rank your site higher in search results if it’s easy for visitors to find what they’re looking for and navigate around the website without feeling frustrated or aggravated.

If you only have one product listed per category instead of several, then this could be why your content isn’t ranking well with Google! It’s important not only to target keywords within each post but also to make sure that all related posts link back to other relevant articles/pages on the topic.

Do people like sharing your blog? Are readers being wowed by your content? If not, then this could be why Google has stopped indexing your site.

If someone links directly to one specific product page instead of using relative keywords like “buy,” “purchase” etc., then there might be something wrong with the way other pages link back to that particular product.

7. You Have A Redirect Loop

Redirect loops are another common problem that prevents indexing. These are typically caused by a common typo and can be fixed with the following steps:

Find the page that is causing the redirect loop. If you are using WordPress, find HTML source of one of your posts on this page or in an .htaccess file and look for “Redirect 301” to see which page it’s trying to direct traffic from. It’s also worth it to repair any 302 redirects and make sure they are set to 301.

Use “find” in Windows Explorer (or Command + F if Mac) to search through all files containing “redirect” until you locate where the problem lies.

Fix any typos so there isn’t a duplicate URL address pointing back at itself then use redirection code like below:

Status codes such as 404s don’t always show up in Google Search Console. Using an external crawler like Screaming Frog, you can find the status codes for 404s and other errors.

If all looks good, use Google Search Console on-site to crawl the site again and resubmit it to indexing. Wait a week or so before checking back in with Google Search Console if there are any new warnings popping up that need attention.

Google doesn’t have time to update their indexes every day, but they do try every few hours which means sometimes your content may not show up right away even though you know it’s been updated. Be patient! It should be indexed soon enough.

8. You’re Using Plugins That Block Googlebot from Crawling Your Site

Where JS comes into play as an issue is when the JS prevents crawling by doing shady things – techniques that may be akin to cloaking.

If you have rendered HTML vs. raw HTML, and you have a link in the raw HTML that isn’t in the rendered HTML, Google may not crawl or index that link. Defining your rendered HTML vs. raw HTML issues is crucial because of these types of mistakes.

If you’re into hiding your JS and CSS files, don’t do it. Google has mentioned that they want to see all of your JS and CSS files when they crawl.

Google wants you to keep all JS and CSS crawlable. If you have any of those files blocked, you may want to unblock them and allow for full crawling to give Google the view of your site that they need.

10. You Did Not Add All Domain Properties To Google Search Console

It’s important to make sure that you’re not missing any of your domain variations when adding them to GSC.

Add them to GSC, and make sure that you verify your ownership of all domain properties to ensure that you are tracking the right ones.

For new sites that are just starting out, this is likely to not be an issue.

11. Your Meta Tags Are Set To Noindex, Nofollow

Sometimes, through sheer bad luck, meta tags are set to noindex, nofollow. For example, your site may have a link or page that was indexed by Google’s crawler and then deleted before the change to noindex, nofollow was set up correctly in your website’s backend.

As a result, that page may not have been re-indexed and if you’re using a plugin to block Google from crawling your site then that page may never be indexed again.

The solution is simple: change any meta tags with the words noindex,nofollow on them so they read index,follow instead.

If you have thousands of pages like this, however, you may have an uphill battle ahead of you. This is one of those times where you must grit your teeth and move forward with the grind.

13. You’ve Been Penalized By Google In The Past And Haven’t Cleaned Up Your Act Yet

If you’ve had a penalty before and have not cleaned up your act, then Google won’t index your site.

You might think it’s a game of hit-or-miss and a matter of luck whether you’ll get a reply.

But I believe that every cold email has a big chance of being opened.

Everything boils down to how you approach it.

In this column, we’ll check out five common reasons email outreach fails.

But first, the baseline.

Personalization is an Email Basic, Not an Optimization

Too often, we see worn-out and overused email outreach templates like the one below.

Spend a bit of time researching the brand you’re trying to contact and invest that bare-bones effort into personalizing your emails.

For example, what’s wrong with this email?

It doesn’t include even a pinch of personalization.

The sender doesn’t address me by name and there isn’t even the slightest hint that they tried to research my company (or what we do), or the types of articles we usually post on our blog.

But a lack of personalization is not the only reason why many pitches end up in the trash folder.

1. Sending Emails to the Wrong People

You can tailor your message in the most creative and engaging way, but it won’t work if you send it to the wrong person.

And too often, good email outreach pitches end up in the wrong inboxes.

I like this simple pattern for our link building campaigns:

Search for a person who is responsible for SEO or link building in the company.

If a business doesn’t have such a specialist, search for someone who’s responsible for creating content for this brand.

Of course, there’s still a chance you won’t find anyone that would fall under SEO/link-building profile.

In that case, really rethink why you are pursuing a partnership with such a business.

Keep looking for a brand with an active content strategy.

2. Following the Wrong Logic in Your Pitch

When I think about this reason, I always recollect an old Greek proverb about Epictetus, a famous philosopher and stoic.

After one of his speeches, the philosopher’s students began praising him for his ideas. Epictetus replied,

“If you are wasting time praising me, it means you hardly have anything valuable to share with me.”

I liken this to the nature of email outreach pitches known as ego-bait.

Basically, the sender praises the addressee, stuffs the email with compliments, and then asks the addressee for a favor.

I even see these pitches in my LinkedIn inbox from time to time:

The problem with ego-bait pitch emails is that they typically offer nothing truly valuable or meaningful in return for that favor they’re asking.

Think about a personalized offer that would definitely grab the addressee’s attention and win them over, instead.

For instance, you could check their blog for outdated content, find broken links, and suggest replacing them with something more relevant.

In my practice, we’ve done a successful outreach campaign by pitching an idea of replacing old data with fresh content.

3. Thinking That Adding a Name Is Proper Personalization

Many email outreach pitches all look the same, except for one thing: the name of the person they are addressing is different.

This is what happens when the sender applies the same template to every outreach email, changes the name, and calls it personalization.

In reality, you will hardly get someone’s attention with your pitch just by adding their name to it.

Besides, some tools do it automatically.

That’s why you need to think about other, more meaningful personalizations.

4. Starting the Outreach With Email

Wait, aren’t we talking about email outreach campaigns?

What do you mean it’s not the best way to start communicating with a prospect?

It would be more productive to start the communication with a prospect via LinkedIn than to send numerous emails and follow-ups.

Email is more of a private domain, while LinkedIn is a social space suitable for networking.

People expect to hear from their network here.

Besides, on LinkedIn, you can check the profile and make sure you’re contacting the right person.

Speaking of LinkedIn, I should also add that it’s a great place for small talk, which inevitably takes place in the initial stages of building a relationship with a prospect.

As a result, you can use all that to establish a rapport and win the prospect over.

5. Failing to Offer Something in Return

The value of your professional relationships grows from mutual benefit.

It would be great if everyone was the Good Samaritan and offered stuff for free just because they want to help.

And maybe there are such people in your industry, but you can’t rely on that.

Same story for email outreach.

In our latest link building email outreach campaign, we found that about 50% of people asked about the benefit they would get if they gave us a link.

What can you offer that would be effective enough to persuade a prospect to give you that link?

If sharing ideas for updating outdated content and fixing broken links doesn’t fit your business profile, you could offer something else—Starbucks gift cards, for example, which has worked out quite well for us.

Another of my industry peers has shared their success with me in sending swag as a thank you for securing a link.

If you have media properties at your disposal — a newsletter or blog, for example — you could offer to feature them in your publication.

You can always use guest posts for that purpose, too.

Offer the prospect a link back to their website in your guest post.

Keep in mind though that if you set out to build hundreds of links to your site, you’ll have to write a good number of guest posts per month.

The choice is yours, but make sure you take your budget and resources into account.

Approach Email Outreach Like a Business Deal

From the lack of email personalization to sending your messages to the wrong people, focusing too much on praising someone, and not offering anything in return, these are the reasons your email outreach campaigns aren’t bringing the results you expect.

Outreach is just one step in developing a relationship with a client.
