Losing access to your iCloud data is a nightmare scenario. Still, in iOS 15, Apple has added a new feature called iCloud Data Recovery Service, which can get (some) of your data back when the worst happens. It’s easy to set up on iOS or macOS, and if you take the time, you’ll be thanking yourself one day.
What Is the iCloud Data Recovery Service? The iCloud Data Recovery Service is a feature of iCloud security that lets you regain access to your photos, notes, documents, device backups, and most other types of encrypted data.
Table of Contents
Note that there are limitations. First, it has to be data that’s been synced to the cloud. So if your device has been lost or damaged before syncing was possible, the data is unrecoverable.
Second, any data that uses end-to-end encryption can’t be recovered. The point of end-to-end encryption is to hide the data from everyone else, even Apple. Without your passcode (the decryption key), your Keychain, Messages, and health data are not recoverable. To access such data, you need a working device that’s logged into iCloud.
How the iCloud Data Recovery Service WorksThe idea behind the iCloud Data Recovery Service is that you’ll nominate a trusted friend or family member to be your backup when you forget both your device passcode and Apple ID password.
Once you’ve nominated your “Account Recovery Contact.” This can be anyone who is over the age of 13, has their own Apple ID, and has an Apple device updated to the latest version of its operating system.
iCloud Recovery and iTunes Backup are DifferentAs of macOS Catalina, the iTunes application has been replaced by Apple Music, Podcasts, and Apple TV. The iTunes app acted as the central hub where you would sync content to your iOS device and make backups to local storage.
iTunes still exists as a Windows app, and Windows users can use iTunes to make a local backup of their device. If you’re using Catalina or later, you can still make a local backup of your iOS device using your Mac, but that functionality is now in Finder.
Whichever local backup method you choose, this is different from iCloud Data Recovery as you have to manually make a local backup to your Mac or PC
Who Needs To Set Up the iCloud Data Recovery Service?Unless you have absolutely no one you can trust, it’s probably best for every iCloud user to set up data recovery with a recovery contact. Even if you don’t feel like you need it personally, you may want to act as the recovery contact for someone else. If you have friends or family who are prone to forgetting their credentials, it’s a good idea to convince them to set it up. Remember that this isn’t something that you can activate after the fact.
The steps for activating the service are slightly different depending on the device you’re using. The steps outlined below are for iOS 15, iPadOS 15, and macOS Monterey.
Setting Up the iCloud Data Recovery Service on iOSThe following screenshots are from an iPhone 11 Pro running iOS 15, but should be similar to any iOS device on iOS 15 or later. To set up iOS Data Recovery on your iPhone, do the following:
Open the Settings app.
Select your name.
Select Password & Security.
Select Account Recovery.
On this screen, you can do several things. To set up iCloud Data Recovery, choose Add Recovery Contact and select a trusted person from your contacts.
Once you’ve completed the process, they’ll receive a message, which you can edit first, and if they accept, they can help you get your data back from your iCloud account on chúng tôi if your phone is lost, stolen, or you forget your password.
The other option is to create a recovery key, which makes it possible to recover your account and access your iCloud data without another person’s assistance. However, this option comes with some special considerations, covered later in this article.
Setting Up the iCloud Data Recovery Service on iPadOSThe steps to activate iCloud Data Recovery on an iPad are very similar to iOS. Here’s what you need to do:
Open the Settings app.
Select your name.
Select Password & Security.
Select Account Recovery.
Like the iPhone method above, you can now add a recovery contact you trust.
Don’t choose the recovery key option until you’ve read our important notes about it below.
Setting Up the iCloud Data Recovery Service on macOSIf you have a MacBook or Mac, the process is slightly different from iOS devices. The following screenshots were taken on an M1 MacBook Air running macOS Monterey. Here’s how to set up iCloud Data Recovery on macOS:
Select the Apple Icon at the top-left of the screen.
Select System Preferences.
Select Apple ID.
Select Password & Security.
Select Account Recovery.
Next to Account Recovery, select Manage
Under Recovery Assistance, select the “+” icon to add a recovery contact.
You can also add a recovery key here or enable or disable 2FA, but please read the next section before you do so.
Should You Use a Recovery Key?If you choose to use a recovery key and lose it, it’s no longer possible to recover your account using the standard Apple account recovery process. It is a more secure way to secure your account since hackers can’t use your information to abuse the standard account recovery process. However, you’ll need your recovery key, a trusted phone number, and an Apple device running at least iOS11 or macOS High Sierra. Since a recovery key is so secure, you need to keep copies of it in a place you won’t lose access to but is also not accessible to unwanted persons.
It’s important to note that you should not set up the recovery key option at this time if you’re already using two-factor authentication (2FA). The recovery key and 2FA recovery method seem to interfere with each other. As mentioned above, using a recovery key blocks the standard recovery method enabled by 2FA. It’s better to pick just one of these two recovery options. If you don’t have elevated security needs, it’s better to stick with 2FA, which is more than enough for most users.
Don’t Just Use One Backup SolutionWhile it’s good to have a fallback access solution to your iCloud backups, it’s never a good idea to put all your eggs in one basket. The good news is that you can easily backup your data to multiple cloud services.

In casual Internet practice, channel bonding is rarely heard of, since it’s rather complicated to achieve and has some drawbacks. However, you might’ve heard it briefly mentioned every now and then, especially when it comes to increasing Internet speed.
This topic has been exploited for ages and it still is one of the hottest subjects online. If you have an Internet connection with not much speed, of course you’ll start to think of ways to get more out of it.
Well, to put it shortly, channel bonding is one potential fix for your slow Internet speed. If you have a bit of technical background, you might see where this is going, but if not, don’t worry, we’ll fill you in.
What is channel bonding?Channel bonding is, as its name subtly suggests, a technique that binds multiple connections to achieve a higher Internet speed. However, don’t fool yourself thinking it’s a piece of cake to achieve this state of bound channels.
In this practice, two adjacent channels that can be found in a certain frequency band are fused together in order to increase the amount of traffic that passes between two or more devices.
While we’re still on the topic, it’s worth mentioning that there’s another similar practice called load balancing. It uses almost the same technique as channel bonding, but there’s no increase in speed.
Multiple Internet connectionsAs we’ve mentioned above, enabling and configuring channel bonding can’t be achieved easily. You’ll need to have special hardware and/or software components in order to enable it.
First of all, you’ll need to have multiple Internet connections. Channel bonding uses at least two connections, so you’ll need multiple Internet connections, whether from the same ISP or from different providers.
More so, your connections can use the same technologies or different ones (for instance fiber vs cable Internet) as long as your hardware can handle them.
It’s not unheard of having more than one connection. Most big companies have secondary Internet connections, which are often referred to as failovers or backups. If one connection fails, the other one kicks in, so that your activity won’t be affected too much.
On the downside, simply having a backup Internet connection won’t automatically increase your default connection’s speed. That’s where channel bonding steps in.
How to enable channel bonding? 1. Channel bonding hardwareFirst of all, you’ll need the hardware. There are some companies that produce devices that can handle multiple Internet connections. Come to think of it, your phone kind of acts like such a device, only it doesn’t use both mobile data and WiFi at the same time.
Expert tip:
For instance, a good channel-bonding-ready device should let you fuse:
Multiple Ethernet connections
Several WiFi Internet connections
A WiFi connection with an Ethernet one
An Ethernet connection with LTE, 4G, 3G
A WiFi connection with a tethered phone connection (kind of hard to achieve)
You get the point. If you can’t plug multiple WAN cables into your device or slide a SIM card, you’re pretty much stuck with one connection at a time.
2. Channel bonding softwareThere are several software solutions you can use to combine multiple Internet connections to achieve greater speed values. You can find most of them by simply typing channel bonding software in your favorite search engine.
However, there’s one tool that we feel deserves to be mentioned in our guide. Speedify is a VPN service that helps you bind several connections into one, thus increasing the throughput between your devices.
The best part is that Speedify doesn’t require any piece of specialized hardware. It works on portable devices such as phones or tablets, but also on desktops or laptops.
It goes without saying that your device should support multiple connections. For instance, if you have a desktop PC, you might lack a wireless network adapter, which leaves you with the Ethernet option only.
However, if you purchase a WiFi adapter, you can easily combine your Ethernet and WiFi connections into a single one, thus increasing speed effectively.
Another scenario is that you can use Speedify on your phone to perform channel bonding using your WiFi and mobile plan.
Additionally, you benefit from all the perks of having a VPN on your devices, such as privacy, increased security, and the possibility of circumventing geo-blocking without breaking a sweat.
Channel bonding can increase your Internet speedTo wrap it up, if you want more from your Internet connection but are limited by your bandwidth, you can easily boost your speed by adding a second connection. We refer to this technique as channel bonding.
More often than not this procedure is not exactly easy to achieve and has a few drawbacks. Usually, supported hardware is just too expensive, and purchasing a second Internet plan can be pricey as well.
However, you can turn to dedicated software solutions such as Speedify. This VPN can merge multiple Internet connections (Ethernet, WiFi, LTE, 4G, satellite, tethered) to effectively boost your speed.

What Is Screen Tearing And How To Prevent It?
Screen tearing is a common problem that occurs in video displays. In technical terms, it takes place when the display shows images from multiple frames at once. But there’s a bit more to screen tearing than that.
In order to understand screen tearing, you have to understand how monitors display images.
Table of Contents
How Monitors WorkTo understand what screen tearing is, you need to understand how monitors display information. The physical screen is divided into pixels, and each pixel will show either red, green, or blue light. The computer tells the monitor how much of each color to display.
Images are displayed as a single, still frame that is then re-drawn over and over again with minor changes that depict motion. The speed with which this new image is drawn is referred to as the refresh rate.
The majority of modern monitors have a 60 Hz refresh rate, which means they refresh 60 times per second. Higher-performance monitors refresh at higher speeds, up to 360 times per second.
The interplay between the GPU and the monitor is what causes screen tearing.
What is Screen Tearing?Screen tearing happens when the monitor is out of sync with the GPU. The monitor does not render images instantly, and if it receives a new image from the GPU while it’s still in the process of rendering its current image, it will start to render a new image with the new information.
This results in a mixture of images, or a torn screen. While this happens when the monitor and GPU are not in sync, it doesn’t matter if the monitor refreshes faster or slower than the GPU. The difference in speeds is sufficient to create screen tearing.
A torn screen is not always as simple as an image that is slightly out of sync. In some cases, it will manifest as slight distortion on screen, like the image above. In other cases, colors will not be aligned or the edges of an image will stutter.
The GPU needs to send new images at a speed that is a multiple of the monitor’s refresh rate, or it needs to be a 1/X fraction of the refresh rate. The key to fighting screen tearing is to keep the GPU and the monitor in sync with one another.
How to Combat Screen TearingThere are several ways to stop screen tearing (or at the very least, minimize it.) Both G-Sync and FreeSync can help reduce or completely eliminate screen tearing from your gaming experience. Both services do this by using VESA’s Adaptive V-Sync technology.
G-Sync is one of the most effective ways to combat screen tearing, but it has specific technical requirements. To be specific, you have to have an NVIDIA graphics card in order to utilize G-Sync.
G-Sync forces the monitor and the GPU to sync with one another. This ensures that a new frame will only be drawn when the last one is completed. All of this takes place in what is known as the “frame buffer.” Frames are pushed onto the display only when they’re finished, which entirely prevents screen tearing.
FreeSync is similar to G-Sync, but is AMD’s version of the service. As a result, you will need an AMD video card. FreeSync synchronizes the monitor’s refresh rate with the framerate of the game you’re playing. This means that simple games may not need FreeSync at all, while more demanding titles may force the monitor’s refresh rate to drop below its minimum refresh rate.
Low Framerate CompensationThis is possible due to something known as low framerate compensation, a technology that compensates for when monitors drop below their minimum intended refresh rate.
How To Set Up And Use Mozilla’s Firefox Accounts
When it comes to the web browsers, like other software, there is a plethora of choice. While most Windows users stick with Internet Explorer – perhaps largely because it comes bundled with the operating system, and they don’t really know about others – Chrome and Firefox have also become popular selections. Even Opera and Safari are available, to name only a couple of alternatives to the big three.
One of several draws in Chrome is the ability to sync the browser. Install it on a new PC or open it on a second system and you are just a Google account log-in away from having your history, passwords, tabs and more. It’s a brilliant and easy solution, and one that should be part of every web browser.
Now Mozilla is testing the waters in Firefox with an improved version of its own – you won’t see it quite yet, unless you happen to reside on the bleeding edge of technology. In that case, you will discover Mozilla Firefox Accounts, which is aiming to be competitive with the Google feature.
BackgroundI would be remiss if I didn’t spend a moment explaining things here. Firefox comes in four different versions – stable, beta, aurora and nightly. Those names represent the descending path of stability. When beta becomes stable and gets released, then aurora moves to beta – it’s a steady test bed of ideas and features.
Firefox Aurora and AccountsIf you wish to experiment with this new addition to the browser, then you’ll need to be running aurora – a step down in stability from beta, but it isn’t going to simply fail and crash all the time – don’t worry. For the most part, it remains solid, though the occasional glitch is not unheard of.
Sync isn’t entirely new to the platform as Mozilla points out. The company has simply gone to greater lengths to improve the service.
If you have an account, then go ahead and sign in. If not you will need to create one. This requires the usual email and password, but for some strange reason also a year of birth. Depending on your age, this is not precise, as it only goes back to 1991 and then offers a “1990 or prior” option.
ConclusionAs I previously stated, this is not entirely new, but has been greatly improved in the new aurora build of the browser. If you already have a Firefox account for sync, then this won’t affect you, but will make it a bit easier to set up on a new system or alter an existing one. It is simple to set up and use, and I encountered no issues in the process.
