What Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 845 could do for smart speakers

Qualcomm might be inside your next smartphone and even your next laptop, but the chip-maker is hoping to find a spot in your smart speaker, too. The ink is only just dry on the Snapdragon 845 but, among the smartphone form-factor reference designs, Qualcomm has cooked up an Amazon Echo and Google Home alternative.

It’s Qualcomm’s Voice Interaction Reference Design, a bulbous smart speaker running on the Snapdragon 845 chipset. Although that might sound overkill, given it’s the company’s most powerful system-on-chip (SoC) to-date, there’s actually a lot about it that makes sense.

At the core, there’s Qualcomm Aqstic, the company’s voice UI technology system. The Snapdragon 845 has improved always-on keyword detection over previous models: for smartphones, one of the big benefits there is a reduction in power consumption while constantly listening out for a trigger word. That might be less important to a smart speaker that expects to be plugged in, but the ability to cut through background noise certainly isn’t.

In the case of the reference design speaker, that relies on six microphones in a circle on the flat top surface. That can do beam-forming, echo cancellation, and noise suppression, on the dedicated low-power audio subsystem. However, Qualcomm told me, the same system could also work on the typical smartphone, which usually has just three microphones.

That could play out in two different ways. On the one hand, the Snapdragon 845 could form the basis of platform agnostic smart speakers. Just as Sonos is doing with its Sonos One, which launched with Alexa support but which the company plans to add Google Assistant support to sometime in 2023, a speaker designer building on the Qualcomm SoC could allow for multiple assistant platforms to co-exist.

Alternatively, if a manufacturer had a single ecosystem in mind – or even wanted to build out their own – they could do that just as easily with the Snapdragon 845. As it does with phones, tablets, and now laptops, Qualcomm will have not only reference designs but all the software tools for speaker-makers to get up and running with minimal R&D time. They might not look like the bulbous model Qualcomm itself built, but they’ll have the same chipset at their heart.

It’s not the processor company’s first push for smart home functionality, mind. Earlier in the year, Qualcomm showed off its smart router reference design, built on the existing IPQ40x8/9 networking SoC. It also had six microphones, together with smart home-friendly connectivity such as Zigbee and Powerline, so that individual product-specific hubs could be replaced by a single device.

What could help differentiate Qualcomm’s smart speaker platform – and make the investment of a Snapdragon 845 versus the lower-power, cheaper chips found in models like the Amazon Echo and Google Home – is the new SoC’s support for local AI processing. As Qualcomm points out, that not only helps reduce latency but improves on privacy, when you’re processing more locally rather than in the cloud. The first devices using the Snapdragon 845 are expected to launch in early 2023.

Qualcomm Snapdragon 8 Gen3 Main Frequency Revealed

According to rumours, the Snapdragon 8 Gen3 would use a “1+5+2” three-cluster architecture. The chip also has a new Cortex-X4 super big core from ARM and increases the primary frequency from 3.5GHz to a maximum of 3.72GHz. It reduces the small core and adds a large core. The Cortex-X3 based on 8 Gen 2 provides a performance gain of 15%  –20%. The GPU is Adreno 750 with 1.0GHz, and the 5 large cores are based on Cortex-A71. However, the two small cores are based on Cortex-A515.

Qualcomm Snapdragon 8 Gen3 GeekBench scores

The Snapdragon 8 Gen3’s single-core running score is 1930 and its multi-core score is 6236. It has vastly improved over the single-core 1524 and multi-core 4597 of the Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 processor.  By the looks of this score, this chip will be the new king of the hill when it shows up. On GeekBench, the new Apple A16 Bionic SoC has single-core scores of 1877 and multi-core scores of 5447. The Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 performs well on GeekBench, scoring 1524 for single-core and 4597 for multi-core. In other words, the Apple A16 is ultimately defeated by the Snapdragon 8 Gen3.

But, there is no need for the Android camp to jump for joy too soon for a few reasons. Since this is simply a model for engineering purposes, the chip’s performance could change in either direction—up or down. However, it will still be a while before this chip is officially released. As a result, its rivals have time to improve their chips.

Snapdragon is a series of mobile processors developed by Qualcomm, which powers many high-end smartphones and tablets. Here’s a brief history of the Snapdragon flagship processors:

Snapdragon S1: Snapdragon S2:

Released in 2010, the Snapdragon S2 was the first dual-core processor from Qualcomm. It also introduced the Adreno 205 GPU and support for 1080p video recording.

Snapdragon S3:

A major news story broke late yesterday when Arm announced that it was suing Qualcomm and its subsidiary Nuvia. This could have long-term repercussions for both the mobile and Arm PC space.

Qualcomm is a major chipmaker in the mobile and computing spaces thanks to its Snapdragon family of processors.

The company used to rely on custom CPU designs for its flagship smartphone processors but switched to semi-custom CPU tech based on Arm IP in 2023.

In other words, it went from designing its own CPU tech to taking Arm’s existing CPU designs and tweaking them.

However, Qualcomm officially acquired Nuvia last year as part of a plan to return to using custom CPU technology. 

Nuvia was formed by former Apple chip engineers and initially focused on Arm-powered datacenter processors. You can read about them over here.

But Qualcomm sees Nuvia as a key tool that will help it beat Apple’s processors in the computer and smartphone spaces.

After all, Apple’s processors, particularly in the computer segment, have been miles ahead of Qualcomm’s chips. 

And yes, current Qualcomm computer chips are based on Arm CPU technology.

Spanner in the works

Arm’s announcement of a lawsuit might throw a spanner into the Qualcomm/Nuvia works. 

Arm said in a statement that Qualcomm and Nuvia breached “certain license agreements” and committed trademark infringement.

Arm asserts that the two companies should “destroy certain Nuvia designs” per a contractual agreement.

The release alleges Qualcomm tried to transfer Nuvia’s Arm licenses without Arm’s consent.

However, Arm also claimed that Nuvia’s licenses for Arm tech expired in March 2023, presumably due to Nuvia’s acquisition.

Arm says Qualcomm therefore “breached the terms of the Arm license agreement by continuing development under the terminated licenses.”

A source dished out more details to Android Authority, echoing some of Arm’s claims.

The source reiterated that Qualcomm would be required to destroy certain Nuvia designs and start over if Arm didn’t give consent for the next phase of development.

It seems consent wasn’t forthcoming for this next phase but that the chip designs remained the same.

Arm’s Phil Hughes also told Android Authority that Nuvia’s Arm licenses barred the startup from being acquired without Arm’s consent.

It’s alleged that Arm’s consent wasn’t sought for Qualcomm to acquire Nuvia.

What next for Qualcomm and Nuvia?

Qualcomm asserted that Arm has no right, “contractual or otherwise,” to interfere with company efforts.

“Arm’s complaint ignores the fact that Qualcomm has broad, well-established license rights covering its custom-designed CPUs, and we are confident those rights will be affirmed,” the company added.

Qualcomm was planning to start sampling the first PC chips with Nuvia CPUs to OEMs in H2 2023, with device launches slated for 2023.

If Arm gets its way and forces Nuvia to destroy some CPU designs, this timeline could be thrown out of the window.

Qualcomm would be forced to keep using its current PC chips. This wouldn’t be ideal as these chips have a reputation for being underpowered compared to Apple’s SoCs.

We’re also expecting Nuvia CPUs to arrive in smartphones after the first Nuvia laptop chips launch, but this timeline could theoretically be pushed back too.

Here’s hoping Arm and Qualcomm reach a resolution that doesn’t involve any major delays, as this could put the Windows-on-Arm and Android ecosystems as a whole on the backfoot compared to Apple.

For what it’s worth, Nuvia was previously under fire from Apple after the Cupertino giant filed a lawsuit against it.

Amazon has Amazon Prime, but it turns out Disney is considering a similar concept. The Wall Street Journal reports that Disney is exploring its own membership program, citing people familiar with discussions.

The program is referred to as Disney Prime internally, although that apparently won’t be the final name.

Still, the name does serve perhaps as evidence of the Amazon Prime inspiration.

The idea is to offer discounts and perks for streaming, merchandise, theme parks, and resorts.

Disney confirmed to WSJ that it was exploring the idea of a membership program, without further details.

The company is apparently working to bring merch buying integration to Disney Plus as well.

Either way, it seems like membership programs are the next digital frontier. Even Walmart offers Walmart Plus, complete with Paramount Plus streaming.

If you keep a close watch on the smartphone segment, you would have seen leaks for a Snapdragon-branded smartphone last month. Well, putting an end to the anticipation, American chipmaker Qualcomm has launched its first-ever smartphone today. Called the “Smartphone for Snapdragon Insiders,” this device is designed to enable users to experience the latest Qualcomm technologies.

Smartphone for Snapdragon Insiders Launched Why Is Qualcomm Launching a Smartphone?

Now, the first question that many of you may have is – why is Qualcomm launching a smartphone? Well, in a closed-door briefing, the company executives revealed that a whopping 1.6 million users have joined the Snapdragon Insider program since its inception back in March this year. Like Windows Insiders, these individuals give feedback on the company’s products to help better the experience for consumers. To reward its loyal fanbase, Qualcomm has unveiled the “Smartphone for Snapdragon Insiders” today.

This smartphone, which has been designed and manufactured by Asus, will offer the Snapdragon Insiders a more curated experience. It will focus on the key strengths of Qualcomm’s chipset, including Elite Gaming, Snapdragon Sound, AI cameras, 5G, and more. Also, Asus will handle the distribution and sale of this smartphone using its own channels.

Key Features and Specs

Manufactured by Asus, the first Snapdragon-branded smartphone includes a 6.78-inch Full-HD+ Samsung AMOLED display with a Delta E <1, up to 1200 nits of peak brightness, and HDR10/ HDR10+ certification. It also boasts 111.23% DCI-P3 color gamut support and Gorilla Glass Victus protection on top. There’s also a 24MP selfie camera housed in the minimal top bezel.

Under the hood, the smartphone is powered by the Snapdragon 888 chipset and not the recently unveiled Snapdragon 888 Plus variant. This may seem like a confusing move to many, but the answer to why Asus didn’t use the Plus variant chip is simple. The device development started before the Snapdragon 888+ was launched, so enthusiasts have to settle with the less-powerful flagship chipset. The chipset is coupled with 16GB LPDDR5 RAM and 512GB UFS 3.1 storage.

Turning our attention to the rear, there’s a lot to take in here. First, there’s a light-up Snapdragon fireball logo that’s illuminated in white (no it’s not RGB). Then, you can notice the physical fingerprint scanner, which is the Qualcomm 3D Sonic Sensor Gen 2. Finally, there’s a triple camera system with a 64MP primary camera, a 12MP ultra-wide lens, and an 8MP telephoto lens with 3x optical zoom on the rear.

Alongside the smartphone, Qualcomm has also bundled a pair of premium Active Noise Cancellation (ANC) supported TWS earbuds from Master & Dynamic.
