Suggested December 2023 What To Do If Your App Icons Are Invisible On Iphone

If you recently unlocked your iPhone to see that some of your app icons are invisible, as if they haven’t fully loaded, you may worry that there is something very wrong with your phone. There is, but it can be fixed. Invisible app icons are a symptom of low storage space.

The thing is, if this is the case for you, you would have been getting low storage warnings for a while now. If you ignore them long enough, you can end up with a phone that can’t function properly. In this article, we’ll tell you how you can fix this problem and get your iPhone’s app icons back.

If only a few seldomly used apps have disappeared, your iPhone simply may have offloaded those apps. If this is the case, you can disable “Offload Unused Apps.”

How to fix low storage causing missing app icons 1. Backup your iPhone iCloud

If you don’t already use iCloud, consider getting it. It can help you save a significant amount of space on your iPhone. Plus, it makes backing up your phone super easy (it’s automatic). The current monthly prices in the U.S. are 50GB for $0.99, 200GB for $2.99 and 2TB for $9.99.

To backup using iCloud:

Go to Settings and tap on your Apple ID name at the top.

Tap on iCloud. Look to see if iCloud Backup is On.

You can force a backup by tapping on iCloud Backup, then tapping Back Up Now.

Mac or PC

You can back up your iPhone to your computer. You can also use your computer to update your iPhone when you are too low on storage. Additionally, if you have any problems with your phone and need to restore it, you can restore it from a backup using your computer.

Mac with macOS Catalina or later

Connect your iPhone to your Mac and open a Finder window.

Enter your iPhone passcode.

PC or Mac with Mohave or earlier

Connect your iPhone to your computer and open iTunes.

2. Free up space on your iPhone to get your invisible icons back

Offload Unused Apps

Review Downloaded Videos

The apps are listed in descending order based on how much storage they are using. You can do the following to free up some space:

Tap on each app to Offload or Delete the app. Some built-in apps can not be deleted.

For some apps, such as Podcasts and Music, you can remove individual podcasts or songs.

Note, for the Photos app, you need to go into the Photos app to delete photos and videos.

For more on how to free up storage space, see Exclamation Point on Photos; How to Fix Low Disk Space on iPhone.

3. Backup your iPhone again

After you have freed up some space on your phone, you should update it. You may still have low storage (and maybe missing icons). If your storage space is too low to update, you will need to use a computer.

Using Finder

Connect your iPhone to your Mac and open a Finder window.

Select your iPhone in the sidebar.

Using iTunes

Connect your iPhone to your computer and open an iTunes window.

Select your iPhone, then select Summary.

If you have further trouble with your iPhone, you may want to contact Apple Support or take your device to an Apple Store.

How To Change App Icons On Windows

Many apps feature icons that aren’t really aesthetic, and that alone could disturb your desktop’s look! Fortunately, you can change app icons or folder icons in many ways to personalize your Windows PC.

Good to know: make your Windows desktop even more unique with these cool 4K backgrounds.

How to Change App Icon in Windows

To change an app’s icon in Windows, you’ll need to create a shortcut for it. In many cases, when a program installs on your system, it also creates a shortcut that is placed on the desktop, but that does not apply to all apps on your PC.

Select an icon from the default options available.

Find an icon you like on the website. Press “All Download Formats,” then select the “Download ICON” option.

Add the custom icon via the app’s “Properties” window.

Tip: revamp your desktop with Rainmeter skins.

How to Change a Microsoft Store (UWP) App Icon

Changing the app icon of a Microsoft Store app is a bit different. You can’t create a shortcut for it as shown in the previous section, as its files (including the .EXE file) are protected in the WindowsApp folder. However, there’s a workaround:

To create a shortcut that opens a UWP app, you need the AppID. To locate it, open PowerShell as an administrator and run the following command.

PowerShell will list all the AppIDs for all programs on your Windows device. Look for the one you want to create a custom shortcut for and copy its AppID. In this example, we are targeting Netflix.

explorer.exe shell:appsFolderAppID

The wizard will ask you to name the shortcut. Do so and press “Finish.”

Now you have a customized icon that can launch a UWP app. However, when you launch it, the app’s original icon will appear on the taskbar.

Tip: learn how to sort folders by size in Windows.

How to Change the Folder Icon in Windows

Changing the icon for a folder is more straightforward than changing an app, as you can customize it directly without creating a shortcut. Moreover, Windows gives you numerous built-in icons to choose from for folders.

Navigate to the “Customize” tab and select “Change icon.” Choose from the available icons in Windows or download and use your favorite icon from IconArchive, Pichon or anywhere else.

Tip: organize your Start menu the way you want on your Windows PC with these tips.

How to Change a File Type Icon in Windows

Changing the default icon for a file type means that every file of that type will have the same icon. For example, if you changed the icon for the DOCX file type, every Word file on your device would display the new icon.

To change a file type icon, use the free software FileTypesMan by NirSoft. It’s compatible with Windows versions XP to 11.

Launch the program for it to list all the known file types in your system. Scroll down to find your target file type. Alternatively, use the “Find” option.

In the “Edit File Type” window, make sure you copy the “Default Icon” path and save it somewhere. You can use that to revert to the default icon, should you choose to.

The file type icon will be changed instantly.

If you want to change back to the default icon, go through the same procedure again but replace the custom icon path with the default icon path you copied earlier.

Many iPhone models look alike. Sure, if you are tech-savvy, you might know about the differences by seeing the camera style, antenna lines, dimensions, etc. But what about general folks! Well, if you are someone who has trouble knowing what iPhone model do you have or which one you are about to buy second hand, here’s an easier way to find out. Let me guide you through the process of identifying various iPhone models.

How Can I Find Out Which iPhone Model I Have?

Identify the iPhone model number using the steps below and confirm it with the list at the end of this post.

Use the Settings App

Turn on the iPhone and open the Settings app.

Tap on General and tap on About.

Tap on Model Number. You will see a number starting with ‘A.’ This is your iPhone’s model number.

Look Inside the Sim Slot

On newer iPhones (8 and later), the model number is etched inside the SIM slot. The tiny alphabets are tough to read. Make sure you have a flashlight or a second mobile phone with a torch.

Use the ejector to take out the SIM tray. Put it safely aside.

Now, point the flashlight inside the SIM slot. You will see the tiny text on the upper edge of the slot.

See the Back of the iPhone

On older iPhones (7 and earlier), the model number is written at the back of the device. It is easily visible.

Remove any case, cover, skin, or opaque protector from the back of your iPhone.

In the lower back, you will see the model number. It starts with the alphabet ‘A.’

Why Do I Have Two Copies Of The Same App On Iphone Or Ipad?

You may end up with more than one icon for the same app on your iPhone or iPad. Since iOS/iPadOS 15, you have been able to put multiple copies of the same app icon on your iPhone or iPad Home Screen. This can be useful for:

Apps you use often and so want to be handy on multiple Home Screen pages.

Or, if you are really organized, you may want multiple icons for the same app so that you can put the icons in separate folders according to the app category.

You can also use different Home Screen pages for different Focus modes. It is for this reason that you really need the ability to duplicate your app icons.

Although I can’t say exactly how you might have accidentally put two icons for the same app on your Home Screen, I can tell you how to add multiple copies of app icons and how to remove them.

How to get two copies of the same app icon

First of all, the app icons you see on your iPhone or iPad are like shortcuts to open the app. So, when you see more than one icon for the same app, you don’t have two separate versions of the app, just two shortcuts.

Add another app icon to your Home Screen

There are a couple of ways to do this, using Search and using the App Library.

Note: For some reason, trying to add a second icon for an app on the same Home Screen page fails (at least in iOS 16.5/iPadOS 16.5). So, if you want to duplicate an app icon and have both icons on the same page, you may need to first place the icon on a separate Home Screen page, then move the icon to the desired page.

Using Search

Open the Home Screen page where you want to add an icon.

To open Search on your iPhone or iPad, you can either tap Search on the Home Screen (iPhone) or swipe down on your Home Screen.

Type the name of the app into the search field.

Slide the icon slightly in any direction. This will open your Home Screen.

Move the icon to the desired spot. If you want the icon on a different Home Screen page, slide the icon to the edge of the screen to move to the next page.

Drop the icon, then tap on Done in the upper-right corner of the screen.

Using the App Library

Open the App Library by swiping right to left on your Home Screen until the App Library opens.

If you see the app you want, go ahead and press and hold your finger on it. Otherwise, type the name in the search field, then press and hold on the app icon.

While pressing the icon, move your finger slightly. This will open your Home Screen.

Move the icon to the desired spot on your Home Screen. If you want to move it to a different Home Screen page, slide the app icon to the edge of the screen to move to the next page.

Drop the icon, then tap Done in the upper-right corner of the screen.

How to remove duplicate app icons on iPhone or iPad

There are a couple of ways to remove unwanted copies of the same app from your iPhone or iPad Home Screen. You can:

Find the icon you want to remove and press your finger on it until a menu appears.

Tap on Remove App.

Tap Remove from Home Screen.

Or, you can:

Press your finger on an empty spot on your Home Screen until the icons start wiggling.

Tap the minus sign (-) on the corner of the app.

Tap Remove from Home Screen.

Tap Done in the upper-right corner of the screen.

3 Ways To Check If Your Iphone Is Charging Fast

These are the following models that support fast charging:

iPhone 8 (12 Watts)

iPhone 8 Plus (18 Watts)

iPhone X (18 Watts)

iPhone XS and XS Max (18 Watts)

iPhone XR (18 Watts)

iPhone 11 (22 Watts)

iPhone 11 Pro and 11 Pro Max (22 Watts)

iPhone SE (2nd Gen) (12 Watts)

iPhone 12 and 12 mini (22 Watts)

iPhone 12 Pro and 12 Pro Max (22 Watts)

iPhone 13 and 13 mini (22 Watts)

iPhone 13 Pro and 13 Pro Max (27 Watts)

iPhone SE (3rd Gen) (18 Watts)

iPhone 14 and 14 Plus (20 Watts)

iPhone 14 Pro and 14 Pro Max (27 Watts)

Unlike Android flagship devices that can support up to 120W of fast charging, iPhones are capped at 20W which is why it is difficult to determine if the phone is fast charging or not without any indication.

Now that we know which iPhone models support fast charging, let’s take a look at how to check if your iPhone is fast charging. We have curated a list of three ways to help you check if your iPhone is accepting fast charging or not.

USB-C to Lightning cable that ships with your iPhone.

Any Apple charger adapter rated 18W or above.

You can also go with any third-party fast charger for iPhone, that supports USB Power Delivery.

The wattage of the adapter is mentioned on the charger as seen in the image below.

Pro tip: You can also use the adapter bundled with your Mac to fast charge your iPhone.

Another way to check the fast charging capabilities of your iPhone is via the Ampere app. Ampere measures the charging and discharging current of your phone and can help you learn how much current is your phone pulling from the charger. Here is how you can check.

Note: Apps like Ampere are not completely accurate so if you are not getting the desired results then it doesn’t necessarily mean that your phone isn’t fast charging.

2. Once downloaded, open the app and set it up.

3. Connect your phone to the charger and switch on the plug.

4. Now tap on Measure Ampere to start the test.

Once completed it will show you how much current your iPhone is drawing. Since most iPhones support 18 to 20 Watt fast charging, you need to check if the app shows results anywhere near that number.

Apple claims that its fast charger can juice up your iPhone from 0-50% in thirty minutes. Using this claim, we will test if an iPhone can charge up to or near 50% in thirty minutes.

1. Drain your iPhone’s battery to 0% till it shuts off.

3.  Start a timer for thirty minutes.

If your iPhone’s battery reaches nearly 50% in thirty minutes then your device is fast charging. If it takes significantly longer than that then your phone is not fast charging.

A: The reason your iPhone charges slower after 80% is that constant fast charging puts stress on your battery, decreasing its efficiency and life which is why the iPhone lowers the charging speed.

A: Yes. The charger shipped with your MacBook can be used to charge your iPhone. As these chargers support USB Power Delivery so they can even fast charge your iPhone.

A: Yes. It is completely normal for your iPhone to get warm while fast charging as it puts stress on your battery. Most phones that charge wirelessly or fast charge also get warm during the charging process.

A: If you are concerned about your iPhone overheating then use only appropriate and supported cables and adapters, charge your phone in an open space, remove any cases or covers when charging, and avoid using your phone while it is charging. You can also, read our dedicated article to keep your phone from overheating.

The CPU is often likened to the human brain in terms of the work it does on your PC. As such, it’s a very important component that should be kept healthy at all times. While good maintenance will extend the lifespan of your CPU, you cannot escape from the inevitable wear and tear.

At some point, your CPU will show failure symptoms, especially if you get high CPU usage messages from time to time. In this article, we let you in on some of the symptoms to look out for so that you can be prepared.

How do I know if my CPU is failing?

CPU failure is a very serious situation. It can be caused by many factors, but the most common is overheating.

If you have a dead CPU, there are many things that can go wrong in your computer system –  from slow performance to total system failure. If you suspect that your CPU is on the brink of collapsing, try the following steps to help determine whether or not it’s time for a new one:

What happens when the CPU fails?

CPU failures are usually caused by overheating, dust and corrosion. Overheating is the most common cause of CPU failure. The CPU is designed to operate within certain temperature limits. When the temperature reaches a certain point, it causes the CPU to fail.

The first thing that happens when the CPU fails is that it crashes. While you can take steps to lower high CPU temperatures, sometimes, your CPU is beyond help. Your PC will make a short series of sounds and then shut down. It’s a pretty dramatic way to go, but it happens fast.

Most modern computers are designed to be tolerant of crashes. They can be restarted, and they will continue running without missing a beat. But there’s a limit to how much they can tolerate before they start breaking down.

If it happens often enough, your operating system may have been scrambled by whatever happened. Some signs such as apps freezing, random shutdowns, slow boot time, and a generally deteriorated performance indicate that you may need a new CPU.

What are the signs of a dead CPU? 1. High CPU temperature

A high CPU temperature is not always due to overheating problems but could also be caused by other issues such as bad cooling or defective fans. When the CPU heats up too much, it will have an impact on system performance and cause errors.

The first sign of a dead CPU is high CPU temperature. You can install CPU monitoring software to ensure the temperatures don’t go beyond the recommended limit and keep your PC healthy.

2. It won’t boot up

If the computer continues to boot, but then shuts down again, this could be a CPU failure symptom. For laptops, even when fully charged, it may be slow in booting.

Expert tip:

3. Random shutdowns

When a computer’s CPU is dying, it can cause various problems with the system. This can include random shutdowns caused by overheating. Random PC shutdowns can be very annoying because they often occur at inopportune times.

You may be working on a project and need your computer to stay online but it just shuts down. If you’re experiencing this problem, your CPU might just be on its death bed and you need to start thinking of getting a new one.

4. Abnormal behavior from the CPU fan

When you notice your CPU fan isn’t spinning as fast as it used to, it’s a good sign that your CPU is dead. If your CPU fan slows down, then the heat generated by your CPU can’t escape through the heat sink and dissipate.

This can eventually lead to severe overheating and damage to the motherboard or other components. If the fan doesn’t spin at all, it may have burned out, or it could be something more serious like a faulty power supply. Always check your fan speed to ensure it is at optimum levels.

5. Inability to use several applications simultaneously

When you open multiple applications or programs at once, your CPU may overload with all the data. This often causes the system to slow down and eventually crash. If this happens frequently, it could be an indication that something is wrong with your CPU or motherboard.

You’ll find that you can’t play games or use several applications at once without experiencing lag time or slow-down issues.

This is because your computer will not be able to handle its full potential when using multiple applications simultaneously. It will usually freeze up when using certain applications and eventually shut down.

Can I fix a CPU failure?

CPU failure is a common issue with computers and laptops, especially if you use the computer for long hours. When a CPU fails, it can be hard to tell if it’s actually broken or if the problem is somewhere else.

If you want to salvage whatever little life is remaining from your CPU, proceed to do the following:

Clean your CPU – You can use a vacuum cleaner to blow out dust from inside the CPU.

Disable overclocking – If you have a CPU that is overheating, then it might be time to disable overclocking. Overclocking can cause your CPU to overheat, or it could also damage your processor.

Replace your CPU fan – If your PC is overheating, then you need to replace its fan or get a CPU cooler. You should also check whether there are any cracks in the fan casing. These can cause the fan to stop working completely.

Upgrade your CPU –  A healthy computer is one that has all its components working together properly and in order. If your CPU has reached its end of life, you need to get a new CPU.

Also, CPU cleaners can help you with the efficient resource management of your CPU so that it isn’t overworked. Hopefully, you now know what signs indicate CPU failure and take the necessary steps to ensure you keep yours for as long as possible.
