What Does An Algorithm Look Like?

We know that Facebook, Google, and Amazon have algorithms that give us updates, search results, and product recommendations, but what does that actually mean? What qualifies as an algorithm? Can you write one down? What would it look like if you did? Since they run so many parts of our daily lives, it’s important to have a basic sense of what exactly is going on under the hood – and it’s really not as intimidating as it often seems.

Informal definition: algorithms are just recipes

At its most basic, an algorithm is simply a set of well-defined steps that you can follow, generally taking some inputs and producing a different set of outputs. A cupcake recipe can be an algorithm. So are the directions to a friend’s house, playing a piece of sheet music, or the process of looking up a word in a dictionary. Raymond Queneau even printed a book of ten sonnets with lines that can be mixed and matched seamlessly to create 100,000,000,000 original poems. How these algorithms are implemented varies widely, but you don’t need to be familiar with any programming languages to understand the basic logic behind them. For example, the following is an algorithm for giving simple walking directions.

After walking out of your door, turn right.

Walk down the road until you come to Market Street

When you reach Market Street, turn right.

Walk straight until you see a brick building.

Go in the front door.

That’s a very simple algorithm that uses a lot of inputs that humans can easily process; we already know about walking, streets, materials, entering, and all those other things. If we were creating a directional algorithm for a robot, it would have to be a lot longer and more specific, which is what makes many algorithms look so confusing to humans.

More formally: algorithms are clear, unambiguous formulas

One algorithm you probably use every day is Google’s PageRank algorithm, which looks at hundreds of factors about a webpage, runs them through its formula, and assigns it a score. The search results you see in response to your search term are a direct result of that score. It works so well because it follows a clearly defined set of rules that tell it what to look for, what to ignore, and what to do with the information it finds.

To visualize a very simple search process, here’s a linear search algorithm looking for the number 3 in a list of numbers.

list = [1, 3, 5]

Check each item in the list.

As soon as one of the items equals three, return its position.

If three is not in the list, return “Three is not in the list!”

Following these steps, the computer will look at the first number, which is one. Since it doesn’t equal three, it moves on and checks the next number. Since that number is three, it returns something like “The number three is the second item in the list.”

All that code is doing is taking a list of numbers, looking at each element in the list, and checking to see if it matches the search term. If nothing does, it just returns “False.” This is an extremely simple algorithm, but whether it’s one line of code or a million, every algorithm in existence operates on the same basic principle: take information, process it according to some preset logic, and get results.

Everyday algorithms

Most of the algorithms that actually run our everyday lives aren’t open source. We don’t know exactly how Google determines what search results to show or how Facebook puts your news feed together, but we can still see the results of those computations. Nonetheless, they are important, and we have a pretty good idea of the basic logic behind them.

Google PageRank works by looking at the number and quality of links leading to and from a webpage, though there are a large number of secret criteria that are constantly being updated to improve results and prevent anyone from gaming the system.

Facebook’s News feed measures the strength of your relationship with people and groups based on your activity, then uses these and some other factors to generate your news feed.

Amazon and Netflix use recommendation algorithms that look at user data, figure out things that each user might want, and show the user those things.

UPS’s ORION system is a huge (1000+ pages!) algorithm, but it can calculate the most efficient route for any delivery while also taking into account all kinds of real-time data and operational parameters, like requested delivery windows.

Artificial intelligence applications like self-driving cars, facial recognition, natural language processing, predictive analytics, and many more rely on algorithms that can take in visual, audio, or digital data, figure out what’s going on, and return appropriate results.

Everything is an algorithm

Once you know what an algorithm looks like, you can’t stop noticing them. They’re not only in our technology, as, after all, they’re in our brains. Everything we do is a result of receiving inputs, processing them, and producing outputs. Most of these processes are stored inside a constantly rearranging black box, but they’re there, behind the scenes, helping us walk around, understand language, and make decisions about things. Humans are equipped to understand algorithms at an instinctual level, so even if computer algorithms are written in indecipherable mathematics and code, they can all be translated into terms we understand.

Media Literacy Is Vital In The Age Of The Image

Educators must acknowledge that there are now two parallel tracks for learning, both equally critical to understand. Running alongside the traditional 3 R’s — readin’, ‘ritin’, and ‘rithmetic — are the three arts: dance, music, and the visual arts. To ignore this new language of media and sensory literacy is to shortchange in a crucial way the education of our children.

The conventional prejudice is well known: Now that DVDs and movies are ubiquitous, and television and computer games incessant, generations of students are becoming less literate, with ominous implications for the future.

First, consider how the human brain works: When a child learns something new, a set of neurons lights up in his or her brain. With each repeat of the lesson, the same neurons fire again. Surrounding neurons, sensitized to the discharges of the first set, soon become part of an ever-expanding electrochemical chorus.

Thus, learned information becomes burned into an increasingly complex network of neuronal pathways. This is how we acquire knowledge that will endure throughout our lives.

Conversely, a child must be exposed to certain kinds of information by a certain age. Otherwise, we risk letting entire tracts of other specialized neurons wither through disuse. The recurrent message at neurocognitive conferences these days is, “Neurons that fire together wire together; neurons that fail to sync fail to link.”

We are born with an excess of neurons, as if nature is telling us to learn as much as possible as quickly as we can. By the age of eight or nine, a devastating neural pruning occurs, and each of us loses about 40 percent of the neurons we were born with. This is why a preschooler can learn a second language with ease, whereas a college student trying to master the same language often finds it painful and difficult.

Given what we now know about how the brain operates, a larger question emerges: What are the consequences of the kind of learning we experience on the larger organization of the human brain?

Two Ways of Thinking

All vertebrates, from fish to fowl, have bilobed brains; humans are not special in this regard. What separates us from virtually all other species is that each of the brain hemispheres in Homo sapiens is highly specialized to process two entirely different types of information.

In more than 90 percent of people, the left lobe is the seat of language, perceived in a linear stream and organized by grammar and syntax. The majority of other linear, sequential mental processes — logic, reason, algebra, causality, and so on — also reside principally in the left hemisphere.

When it comes to temporal processes that move linearly in time, such as doing taxes or figuring logic problems, the left hemisphere trumps the right. When it comes to processes that are primarily spatial — driving a car, or playing tennis — right trumps left. Natural selection has evolved the left hemisphere in humans into something new under the Sun — a sense organ charged with understanding sequential time.

The right hemisphere, by contrast, is nonverbal and contributes a global (some might say holistic) awareness to events. This is the side of the brain that can add an emotional dimension and larger meaning to the knowledge we acquire. In general, the right lobe perceives many things simultaneously — whole images at a glance. It lets us respond to such nonlinear input as body language, voice inflection, and facial expressions.

Simply put, the left side of your brain processes information presented in the form of numbers or words, while information displayed in images is primarily processed by the right side. The left hemisphere, for instance, knows you’re five minutes late for class; the right one worries about the consequences and imagines what might be going on in your absence.

Of course, the complexity of the brain, and the broad band of connecting fibers joining the two sides — the corpus callosum — keep this scenario from being as tidily cleaved as our description makes it sound. Nevertheless, numerous studies have confirmed this basic dichotomy.

The varied functions of the right and left sides of the brain also can be seen in terms of sexual duality. (To avoid becoming bogged down in disclaimers and qualifiers, I’ll concentrate on right-handers, who make up about 90 percent of the population; no slight to you lefties is intended.) Every human is a psychic hermaphrodite, a composite of a feminine side and a masculine one.

In general, the right hemisphere of both men and women is the seat of their feminine component, while the left hemisphere is the seat of their masculine side. Many of the modules in the brain necessary to care for preverbal children, for instance, are located in the right hemisphere; the strategy, planning, and cooperative aptitudes necessary to hunt and kill large animals (or make hostile-takeover bids on Wall Street) reside principally on the left side.

An Important Balance

All humans have the innate capability to learn the grammar of the first language they hear. Every infant is born with the aptitude for reading the body language, gestures, and facial expressions of the cooing mother, the whispering dad, the silly siblings. Visual communication is as natural and easy as opening our eyes.

Evolution, however, did not as naturally prepare humans for the immense innovation we call literacy. Though the earliest humanoids began wandering the valleys and wooded highlands of eastern Africa almost 6 million years ago, the invention of writing is relatively recent: Inscribing markings on small bones and cuneiform tablets began only about 5,000 years ago.

Early scribes first used pictographs to convey a series of connected thoughts. Pictographs, however, are not truly writing, but, rather, are drawings that represent specific objects. These communications were streamlined and standardized by a simple innovation called the alphabet some 3,500 years ago.

The earliest writing seems to have developed out of economic expediency; some of the earliest examples were employed to label farm produce and keep accounts in order. It was an extraordinary development, on a par with harnessing fire and inventing the wheel.

The Power Of Vulnerability In Professional Development

As part of our professional development (PD) at Two Rivers Public Charter School, we meet at least three times a semester with a group of colleagues to analyze student work. We do this to inform our instructional planning and design. We explore and gain feedback on questions like:

What stage are students in their understanding of and competency with the knowledge and skills we’re teaching?

What essential knowledge and core skills are assessed by the assignment?

What are next steps for teaching this skill to students?

This protocol helps us identify potential gaps between learning objectives and student mastery, come up with solutions to meet our students’ needs, and improve our teaching practice. Here are step-by-step instructions and a video on how to adapt this PD protocol at your school.

Bringing your students’ work to be critiqued by your colleagues may not be easy at first—in fact, it can make you feel vulnerable. But it’s in that vulnerability that you will find strength and support from both yourself and your colleagues.

At our school, we bare it all. We lay it all on the table—the good, the bad, and the ugly. We do this without ego, and we do this in order to become better teachers for our students. We do this because our leadership does a lot of work to cultivate trust in our staff. We set norms to work together. We also work hard to value each teacher’s different strengths. We take risks and honor the need to have difficult conversations. We are convinced that we learn better together and that our work benefits from the perspective of others. Many school-wide practices and routines are in place to allow us to do this, but nowhere is our willingness to be vulnerable more present than when we look at student work together.

How We Look at Student Work

When we look at student work, we share it honestly and with no filters. We gather with a group of teachers from different grade levels and content areas. The work is presented with minimal introduction and then discussed. The presenting teacher does not speak but listens, and then joins the conversation at the end after having had a chance to process all that has been gleaned from their students’ work.

Your Value as a Teacher Is Not Based on One Lesson

In order for this to be a useful experience, we must allow ourselves to be vulnerable as professionals. We must first see ourselves as separate from our teacher selves. We are not just teachers. This separation helps us to see our work objectively. One crappy lesson does not a crappy person make, much like a brilliant lesson does not mean you are a brilliant person. We all have learning to do as teachers, and both the teacher who presents and the teachers who critique are enriched by this experience.

It’s Not About You, It’s About the Work

Needless to say, it can be terrifying to present work to your peers and ask them to judge your planning and design. Thoughts like, “What if they think I’m a terrible teacher?” are common. You are essentially asking fellow teachers to evaluate how well you have taught something—as evidenced in the work presented in front of them—which can be scary! Pushing past that discomfort is crucial. It is essential that when you bring work to the table, you don’t take things personally. It’s about the work, not you. With practice, this gets easier.

Be Honest

Though our leadership does a ton of work to set up structures that encourage trust, no real growth can happen unless each teacher commits to taking and sharing professional risks. If you allow yourself to be vulnerable—if you can be open to critique—the benefits can be astounding. Your perspective can widen to encompass the vision of your entire team. If you remain open and vulnerable, your work gets exponentially better. Being open to critique can yield richness beyond belief. This does not happen if you are not honest, or are trying to show off your best work. You must expose your weaknesses.

Trust Your Team

None if this can be done without a team that you know will not judge you personally. You need to be able to trust that they have the interest of the students at heart, will be fully present, and will analyze your students’ work with all of their teacher brain powers. I am lucky to be at a school where our leadership actively and intentionally cultivates trust among our staff. If you feel isolated at your school, reach out to like-minded colleagues. It can seem daunting, but don’t let that discourage you! The effort it takes to create and nurture professional relationships is worth it.

My first year teaching, I was at a school where there was not a lot of support or efforts to build trust. It was a large high school with hundreds of teachers. What made that year a resounding success for me was that I found two teachers that I could depend and rely on. As a first-year newbie, I failed many times, and I was able to see those failures as growth opportunities because of my tiny, trustful group. Once you create a group of like-minded colleagues, expose your struggles. That is an important first step toward establishing trust. When we shared our difficulties and strategized for improvement, it also built trust in our group. Though my colleague group was not facilitated by that school’s administration, the group was helpful—it allowed us to be vulnerable and truly hear others’ perspectives.

Valuing and trusting a wide range of perspectives is key. Although I now teach 6th-grade English language arts, I know that an early childhood teacher or a math teacher can view the work in a way that I would never have thought, which is invaluable. I can also gain important teacher wisdom by looking at their students’ work as we engage in these professional conversations.

A Culture of Colleagues

Looking at student work together has an immediate positive impact on the work we do in the classroom with our students. It’s like having a six-person super brain helping you plan your next lesson. However, part of the benefit of this practice is that it perpetuates a culture of trust outside of these conversations. Because I know I can be vulnerable while looking at student work, I also know I can seek help at other times. If I’m feeling that something is not going well in my classroom, I know that there are a host of teachers willing to help me think things through objectively. That is one of the most awesome things about our school. Our professional community allows us—even when the work is challenging—to feel that we are not alone in the work.
